Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Autumn was dying, and with it came an unexpected chill in the air. Summer had been scorching, and-- there was no way around it-- outright miserable. Somehow, Vyra had escaped any sunburn, but shells, the heat was exhausting. She felt like she couldn't go outside, and when she did try, she became sweaty and drained within what seemed like minutes. So she had become cooped up and restless, only leaving the shade of the weyr for drills and riding practice. There was no relief there: she had worn the lightest outfit she owned, but it was still unbearable. Long sleeved to keep her skin from burning, but unable to provide much circulation of air to her skin. No, it had been a harsh summer, made harsher by the fact that she still had few friends. Vyra had always been withdrawn and quiet, but Vaioa, frankly, didn't feel like home.

Today had been one of the last Threadfalls of the year. Early morning, and short, due to so much of it falling over the ocean. With the majority of the day still spanning open before her, Vyra retrieved a couple of bread rolls from the kitchens and went to find Theteth.

Her Grey had recovered from Fall and finished regurgitating the ashes from the firestone. She waited patiently for her rider in the Weyrbowl, although the occasional twitch of her tail suggested eagerness about... something. She knew that Vyra was planning something, and she was eager to figure out what it was.

Vyra reached Theteth's side and leaned against the pale dragon. Theteth, please speak to Salubuth. I am overdue a girl's afternoon with Sygnet. Please find out when she will be free for company.

Theteth wiggled happily. She so enjoyed her classmates' company, and if Vyra and Sygnet were going to spend the afternoon gossiping away, she could spend time with the blue. Alright! She agreed eagerly.

Searching, she located Salubuth at his weyr, and reached out to him. Sal! Vyra would like to spend time with Sygnet. Would you please ask her when she will be free today?

Done, we are done, done done done. Salubuth sing-songed to his rider, who was carefully folding her straps for the season. She had multiple sets, and this was a specific lucky set that she preferred to use for threadfall. Non-lucky straps were good enough for the winter's practices. Sygnet smiled into her work as her blue celebrated the season's change, it was a reason to rejoice. There would be much drinking in the dining hall tonight if Vaioa was anything like Fort. Relief that their lifetime menace had retreated even for a short period had to be a universal feeling.

Salubuth stopped his bouncing and cocked his head, clearly listening to something or someone. "What's up?" Sygnet asked, brushing her hands on her pants and shutting the wooden chest that held her most important belongings, now plus one light blue strap set. Our company has been requested! By Theteth and Vyra, oh, I'm so delighted! Theteth would like to know what our time is like? The blue vibrated excitement at the mere words. Sygnet grinned both at and with him. It had been...well, how long had it been since the two women had sat down and spent time together that wasn't interrupted by drills or dragon care? That she couldn't remember spoke to the length. "I don't see why we couldn't. But, ah, I'd like to get changed first. Tell her we'd be free in a half candlemark or so." If they were going to be relaxing she'd do it in something other then dirty riding clothes.

We could be there in a half candlemark! I shall fly there with speed. Sygnet rolled her eyes at that. It was literally a 30 second hop between weyrs, the bowl wasn't that big. After slipping into a light, simple white dress with black accents and washing her face Sygnet felt able to put the day's threadfall behind her. It was a wonderful feeling, a refreshing weight off her shoulders. For the moment she could just be Sygnet, person, instead of Sygnet, overly stressed blue rider.

"Before we leave ask her if we should bring anything, would you?" Sygnet would like to know if Vyra wants us to bring... He trailed off, not sure what precisely his rider was thinking of. "Snacks, drinks, etc. And make sure we're going there and not they're coming here please." She supplied, gesturing for him to finish before the other pair thought he'd spaced out. Snacks, drinks, etc. He repeated, not sure what 'etc' meant but trusting that their friends would. We are meeting up at your weyr, correct?

Salubuth says that they can be here in a half candlemark! Theteth relayed cheerfully. Or... maybe not here... I am not sure where...

Indoors, I believe. This time of year, it is more comfortable. Come. I must freshen up. Vyra mounted her Grey and the pair returned to their weyr.

Vyra splashed water on her face and tied her hair into a messy knot on top of her head, belying its true volume. Are you comfortable? You must leave room for Salubuth, as well.

Naturally! Theteth's usually mild manner had been replaced by an eagerness that looked nowhere near fading. I cannot wait to visit with my friend again!

I as well. Vyra smiled at the thought of visiting with Sygnet. The woman was probably the only person Vyra would feel comfortable naming as a friend. She reached into her drawer for a fresh set of clothes, and ended up with a pale tan tunic over dark leggings.

Vyra, trilled Theteth. Sal says that Sygnet wants to know if she should bring anything!

Vyra turned to survey her small weyr and considered. Tell them that I have some bread rolls, but some fruit or mulled wine would be welcome, she decided.

Right. She paused. Sal says that Sygnet wants to know if we are meeting up at our weyr?

This time. We can use hers next. Vyra smiled and straightened her small space. Everything was tidy and sparse, but she had two chairs and a small table at least. Just enough for us, she thought in a satisfied sort of way.

“We can manage mulled wine.” Sygnet decided, trying to decide the best way to go about this. “I'll run down to the hall and get some, then you can get us both to her weyr.” Salubuth vocalized his understanding before gliding down to the dining hall exit to wait for her to retrieve her contribution to the day's plans. With the blue gone Sygnet took a long moment to steady herself. While the idea of spending the afternoon with Vyra was truly a pleasure sometimes it felt like she had to remember how precisely socialization worked. A reminder that Vyra wasn't going to judge her, wasn't going to be watching for anything but particularly amusing anecdotes, that was what the blue rider told herself before leaving the safety of her rooms.

When she met Salubuth she was several skins of wine heavier. The heat from them radiated enough to be uncomfortable against her skin, so she clipped them to her dragon's straps and mounted side-saddle. Not a common way to ride, but for the occasion it would due.

“You still excited an excited blueberry?” More then excited! Is there a more then excited? If so that's what I am. We're going now? Sygnet nodded and the blue launched, his rider hanging onto a neck ridge with a smile. Seeing that Theteth had very considerately left him space on their ledge Salubuth landed with care, doing his best to fold his wings without causing a mess but still accidentally slapping one sail edge against Theteth's face.

Hello we're here! Obviously we're here, I'm taking up space, but I feel like I should say it anyway because I'm so happy to see you! Oh, no, I'm sorry about that! My wings are also happy to see you and they wanted to say hello too? Sygnet grinned while Salubuth prattled at his grey sister. There'd be no use in stopping him, so she dismounted, grabbed the hot wine, and headed inside with open arms to embrace her friend. “Vyra! Your stuff is so organized, I wish I could say the same about mine. If we do this at my weyr I'll need a little more notice.” She chuckled self-deprecatingly.

Theteth reared back to make room but not in time to avoid a glancing blow from Salubuth's wingsail. She did not mind, though, mouth splitting open in a delighted, draconic grin and a chortle with her greeting.

Salubuth! Hello! She pranced in place before settling back down, affectionately rubbing her head against his. It has been so long! I am happy to see you and your wings, too!

Vyra, who had come to see Salubuth's arrival, rolled her eyes at Theteth's eager greeting. Please! As if you and Salubuth don't gossip on the fireheights every few days!

This is different, explained Theteth. This is a proper social occasion!

Vyra rolled her eyes again. She doubted she'd ever understand.

Sygnet popped up from behind Salubuth's bulk, and despite herself, Vyra felt her face splitting into a grin. Just the sight of her friend was enough to completely relax her. All the tension and the bad energy from what seemed like the past Turn dissipated. This was why they had decided to come; so that they could be in a new environment, together, and find a new home. Having anxiety and loneliness and all of the negative feelings she'd had, that was what she'd been trying to get away from. Sygnet was probably the only person around whom she could really be herself.

She moved forward and hugged Sygnet, delighted to see the other ex-Fortian. "Hello!" She greeted lightly. "Oh, this is nothing. It's only so neat because I haven't even really settled in! I hardly have anything to show for being here." At this, her smile turned crooked. "Anyway, I have bread to go with that wine you have!" She brought out the basket of fresh rolls and perched it on the table, before dropping into a seat. "So! How are you finding Vaioa then?"

Salubuth returned the head rub with glee. Thank you! And now we'll get to fly together for reasons beyond Thread, maybe drills will even have things like races or contests. He ended in hushed tones, as if speaking his wishes too loudly would keep them from coming true. We didn't get to have many at Fort.

“Salubuth likes me having 'stuff.' He thinks it should help me feel comfortable, especially now that we're somewhere new.” Sygnet didn't find his tactic effective, but it made the blue happier, which made her happier, so it worked in a weird round about way. She returned the hug, a wonderfully familiar sensation even in this new place. “Mmmm. You're amazing. They're still warm, that's perfect. I'll pour us some of this...” The blue rider stopped, hands out and form cup-shapes as she paused in horror. “I didn't bring anything for us to drink out of.” She squinted her eyes in mortification, exhaled, and chuckled. “I never drank during candidacy, but I remember seeing others drink it straight out of the skins. If they could do it then I guess we can do it now?”

She offered Vyra a hot wine skin of her own before settling into the chair beside her friend. That was an immensely broad question, where to start? “It's too hot, and too dry except when it's pouring, and it feels like the days are actually longer.” These were familiar complaints, practically regular conversation starters between those who had transferred from Fort. There were more interesting things to comment on, if she could only think of them. The wine would help with that as the afternoon continued.

“It's been interesting having all women leaders in our wing. I'm not sure we'd have seen that too much at Fort." That sparked a thought which she verified with a moment of mental checklisting. "I think half the wings are led by a color other then bronze, actually." Fort didn't technically object to other colors are wingleaders, but bronzes still dominated the position when it came to deciding who would take over when old leaders retired, or went Between.

No, Theteth agreed, shaking her head as if to dislodge water droplets. I have seen many races and flights here, many more than I ever saw at Fort. It was as if the dragons themselves were more free here, and not just the attitudes governing the place; though it was probably a combination of both. Theteth herself was not exactly prone to such flights of fancy, but reunited with her friend the way things used to be, she was letting her excitement take over.

"It's not an invalid idea," Vyra mused. "The more physical attachments you form to a place, the stronger your emotional attachments become." She smiled wryly. "If you have to move, you have more things, more hassle. It becomes easier to stay where you are." A moment of thoughtful contemplation, and she added, "Maybe that's why I haven't acquired very much. After everything that happened at Fort... it's hard for me to imagine really putting down roots here."

Vyra smiled drily nonetheless and took the offered wineskin. She could drink straight from the skin just fine, glasses were one of those many small luxuries that could lead to her feeling attached.

She had to laugh at Sygnet's description, though. "Hot and long indeed. With Thread to exhaust you if the heat and sun haven't drained you." She had not enjoyed her first summer here, that was certain. Sygnet's observation did address the heart of the matter, though. She nodded. "It's weird. Female Wingleader, Wingsecond, and Wingthird. I don't think a Garnet at Fort would be allowed to rise above Wingsecond. Bryn is very good, though. Interesting, isn't it? Fort would never have allowed it, but Vaioa does, and they do it well. Just like Fort wouldn't want us... 'Puranath' geners, right? But Vaioa will have us." Just went to show, Vaioa was more openminded overall, and maybe they did genuinely want to offer themselves as a home. She sighed and shook her head. "I guess when I was at Fort I never realized... or wanted to realize... how much they cared about color. Of dragon hide," she added after a beat, thinking coldly of her father's skin color compared to her own. She pushed on before she could dwell for too long about that particular matter. "Here, if I wanted to-- which I really don't-- I could work my way up to Wingleader, I mean, they even have blue and green Wingleaders. Fort would never have put me anywhere above Wingthird, no matter how qualified Theteth and I became. Just because she's grey." She fell silent, considering just how willfully blind she had been.

"That's giving my blueberry a lot of credit. He's good in the sky but I don't think quite that clever." Sygnet smiled and tried to imagine Salubuth scheming to make her love Vaioa, but it all came out as comically ridiculous. Vyra's resistance to the idea though, that was perfectly reasonable. "Can't blame you for that. What if they decide they don't want us too, it'd be all that hassle over again." Shards that was a depressing thought. Not that she was especially fond of Vaioa yet, but adjusting to yet another foreign landscape would be exhausting.

Sygnet shrugged. Thanks to her parentage she'd been aware of Fort's color biases for most of her teenage years, and that Vyra hadn't been just spoke to their difference in backgrounds. Her friend hadn't had encouragements to focus on only the metallic babies for turns and turns. "Puranath, huh. I'm sure there's a hide somewhere that has us labelled as such. At Fort it probably says 'Warning, warning, not allowed with ten dragonlengths of a queen' at the top too." She wasn't sure where the term came from, truthfully. It sounded like a dragon's name but beyond that it was a mystery to the blue rider. When the first black and graphite had hatched she'd paid little attention, it wasn't happening at Fort so how could it effect them? Life continued on as usual, until it hadn't.

She took a long swallow from a skin and grimaced. "Too hot." A mouthful of bread helped, a piece which she then finished off because it was delicious after the day's work. "You as wingleader." Maybe Vyra hadn't been serious, but Sygnet was only half-teasing when she repeated the idea. "I could see it. You're smart, and hard working. Why not?" The blue and green wingleaders were a subject Sygnet didn't want to poke at, those specialty wings in general were something of an uncomfortable topic for the rider. She knew exactly what Fort had thought about the idea, and she hadn't yet tackled that internal conflict.

On the ledge, Salubuth was listening in to their conversation. They're together, they're supposed to be less sad. Thinking about Fort was bringing Sygnet down from her initial happy burst at a sudden afternoon with a close friend. Time for a subject change! He gave Theteth an expectant look, surely she'd have a suggestion.

Sygnet's moment of contemplation was broken by her blue's intervention. "He's right. I shouldn't be too down, you're here, I'm here, things could be a lot worse." She raised up the wine skin for a rather floppy toast. "To us being here, alive, and not stuck with stuffy old traditions." At this she straight out giggled, it might have been the first time she'd let herself insult their old home.

Vyra nodded at Sygnet's words, but was unable to smile. Since the transfer she had been having dark thoughts, feeling like she'd never be at home. She wouldn't give Theteth up for the world, but sometimes it seemed like she'd never fit in anywhere that wasn't Healer Hall. And the possibility of returning there was slim to none. It wasn't possible, now that she had Theteth. Dragons lived in Weyrs, period.

She did manage a smile at Sygnet's words though. "Yeah. Me as wingleader. That's a laugh." She shrugged. "I don't want that kind of responsibility. Being responsible for the safety of Pern blah blah blah, that's more than enough for me. You know what I've ever wanted out of life? Just to belong." Her smile turned bitter as she remembered the feeling of isolation that had come out of her very family. "To not be a burden. That's all I want."

She shook her head and looked down at the table, then reached for the basket of bread just to give her hands something to do. It was hard to admit this, but she hadn't had any kind of emotional bond with anyone other than Theteth in so long, and... alright, well, she was lonely. She and Sygnet had been close at Fort, and she had the impression that they still were. Well, what good was a friendship if you couldn't use it for support? Vyra would have listened to Sygnet in a heartbeat if the woman had had any burdens on her mind; would have done anything in her power to help. Maybe it was time to stop blocking her heart from others. Time to stop building that wall around her emotions.

"Being a dragonrider is more than fulfilling, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trade that for the world." She smiled at Sygnet's toast. "I just hope that we can be happy here." Sygnet and Salubuth were right; this was no time to dwell on the what-ifs. Vaioa might turn out to be inhospitable, but then, they could all die in Threadfall in the next sevenday. All they had to go on was the fact that Vaioa had welcomed them with open arms. That, at least, didn't sound like something they would do if they just wanted to get rid of them.

Theteth cocked her head and regarded Salubuth thoughtfully. Vyra is usually sad, these days, she confessed. I had hoped seeing a friend would cheer her up a bit... Maybe they should gossip?

She prodded Vyra expectantly. Vyra, do the gossip!

Vyra sighed and rolled her eyes, but couldn't hide her smile, which was genuine. "Alright. I have orders to not talk about all of that anymore. We're here, so... have you noticed anyone in this place?" Vyra herself wasn't interested in a romentic conquest, but that didn't mean she couldn't enjoy hearing about one. "Got your eye on anyone?"

Sygnet felt for her friend, Vyra's pain was a shared pain, belonging was hard enough without complicated weyr politics interfering with their lives in drastic ways. “You're not a burden. You helped me feel like I wasn't one, like I wasn't worthless, or useless, all the way back at the beginning of weyrlinghood. I remember several distinct occasions where you dragged me and Salubuth from our room because I'd been hiding there instead of participating in group practices, and someone noticing we weren't around...it helped. So when I say you aren't a burden, you should believe it.” There was no easy fix to that pain, but she hoped the reassurance might take the edge off.

Yet if they shared that pain perhaps they could share a hope too. “If this doesn't work we'll pull a stunt out of a harper's tale and open our own weyr, tell everyone else to go Between.” It was a silly thought, but Sygnet wasn't opposed to silly in private. “I'm still uncomfortable with a lot of Vaioa. Logically I know things are better here, but when you have people telling you the world works a certain way your whole life, those thought patterns aren't broken over night. It's hard.”

Salubuth joined in Theteth's suggestion, Yes, gossip. You should tell her about Veseth's! Sygnet rolled her eyes at her blue's eagerness to give away all that happened in her life, and playfully threw a small ball of bread at his head. “Sal was having one his nights where he was convinced horrible things were coming, M'taiki joined us for a long watch in the weyrbowl.” She wasn't sure about romantic interests, but he hadn't been hard on the eyes once she'd gotten over her fear that he'd tell their wingleader what was going on. “He was nice enough, and Veseth was really helpful in handling Sal's fears.” Sygnet started on another bread roll, slightly due to their tastiness but mostly to justify her inability to meet Vyra's gaze while she was talking. “Turns out he's a recent transfer too, from High Reaches.”

I asked Sygnet if all the best dragons are from cold places, but she shushed me. Salubuth confided in Theteth, I think I'm right.

She knew better then to ask if Vyra was interested in anyone, romance and Vyra did not fit in the same sentence, but that didn't stop her next question. “And you, any, ah, meetings worth talking about?” The blue rider blushed as she chickened out of straight up asking 'any good bedmates?' How someone who was raised in a weyr could be so bashful about sex she'd never know, but she'd managed it. She fidgeted with the mulled wine, rolling the warm skin between her hands and encouraging the heat to soak into sore joints.
