Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese paced up and down the short hallway in her weyr, playing Talora's words over and over in her mind.

It's not that Vaioa is a bad place... and it's not that it's too much of a mess... but she'd never expected all of the problems she'd ended up encountering. Moving to Vaioa was supposed to be good for her and Cirseth but it had just been one stress after another... and... owing both to age and desire to decrease her workload... Aniese's head spun.

Reze? Is this even... allowed? What's precedent?

A Senior Weyrwoman can retire whenever she deems fitting. Didn't Lisenyth's retire at quite a young age?

Yes, but I heard that was more because of a mental breakdown.

Well, maybe that is what Talora hopes to avoid. Rezeirth was only slightly offended by the implication that Vaioa was rife with troubles too vast and difficult for Talora to handle. After all, Vaioa was home, and they'd been through troubles before with great success.

Aniese chewed her lip. She didn't put it to the council, really, did she? She mused. I guess... she's really gone then, isn't she?

Retiring South as we speak, Rezeirth rumbled. I believe she will serve an advisory role there, with the other council they have elected. Are electing. Whatever.

Aniese glanced at her dragon, registering Rezeirth's dismissive tone, but then shrugged it off. Can you call Melacyth and Rhias? I need to talk this over with someone I trust. Normally it would have been O'zen, but Rhias was in roughly the same position that she was, so it made much more sense. Rhias would understand perfectly.

They will come meet us, Rezeirth replied calmly, then moved aside in preparation for Melacyth's bulk.

Aniese glanced out at the ledge and then sighed and strode back into the weyr. Maybe I should have some food or wine. She called down to the Lower Caverns to have something be sent up. She couldn't drink, certainly not with how jumpy she was feeling about this.

Come on, Aniese. Get it together. Change happens. We will adapt.

Aniese calls for us, Melacyth informed her rider quite cheerily. Rhias glanced up from the pillow she'd had her face buried in. The makeup she'd painted her eyelids with the previous night was smeared down her nose and up onto her forehead and her bed furs were rumpled and disheveled. Really, she looked exactly the opposite of what most folks imagined a Weyrwoman should be, but Melacyth thought fondly that her rider might surprise every last one of those people. She'd grown.

And that made what she was sure Aniese wanted to see them about all the more interesting. She had felt no stirring to mate of late, but the time would come within the turn. With Talora and Atlen gone South and Senyrae and Chetia absent, that left Rhias and Aniese to pick up the slack. Both queenriders knew that the choice was out of their hands; tradition dictated that the first to rise took control. Tradition also said that that dragon was usually a gold, but Vaioa was in a unique position.

"Comin' comin..." Rhias muttered. She rolled out of bed and wandered over to her wash basin, splashing stale water on her face. When she finally emerged into Melacyth's sitting area, she looked much more refreshed and less like she'd just awoken from the dead. "Is there wine? I hope there's wine. There better be." She swung up onto her dragon's neck, not bothering to spend time applying safety straps. Rezeirth's weyr was only a short glide away.

There's always wine when you visit, Melacyth chuckled affectionately. She landed daintily and bumped noses with her golden sister before settling back down. Rezeirth's always thinks ahead.

Sure enough, she had. Rhias greeted her friend and fellow queenrider with a glad cry and a hug and then snatched up a goblet and a wineskin, murmuring, "You're the best." She took a long sip and then sighed in relief, sinking into a chair. "Brooding is best done over a drink, you know? If I'm going to sit here and worry about something out of our hands, I'm gonna do it with some Benden white in my system."

Rezeirth returned Melacyth's affectionate greeting with a gentle nuzzle, most unusually restrained, and then flopped inelegantly down onto her ledge.

Aniese is getting ready to fret, she informed her sister. Probably until sundown, and then into the night. A sudden groan, perhaps of exasperation, issued forth. Can't Rhias do something? Rhias seems to have plenty of ways to occupy herself in the night. She shot the pair a glance as they vanished into the inner weyr. She should teach Aniese how to distract herself from fretting.

Aniese glared at Rezeirth before entering her inner chambers. I don't need a distraction, thank you, she said tartly. Rhias has taught me plenty.

Obviously not enough, if you're still alone and fretting. Rezeirth flicked her tail irritably. Perhaps I should ask Lenth to invite himself and his rider over tonight?

Hush, you. Aniese gave Rezeirth the mental equivalent of a shove and turned back to her room.

"Yes, wine," Aniese replied belatedly. She wouldn't have any, but she knew Rhias liked her little indulgences. Then again, Rhias could handle so much more wine than Aniese that what was an indulgence to Aniese was nothing for Rhias to bat an eyelash at.

"So." Aniese stood awkwardly for a moment, then resigned to Rhias's better judgement and sank into the chair opposite. "I'm not worrying about something that is out of my hands..." Well, maybe that was the eventual conclusion of this train of thought, but that hadn't been where Aniese's mind first jumped. She snatched up a bread roll and tossed it from hand to hand unthinkingly. "I just... don't know what to think. Talora retiring? She is the Sr. Weyrwoman. Why would she do it, anyway? I just don't know how to feel about it." She chewed her lower lip. "You know I don't like change."

"Well if the Weyrleader can do it, why not the Weyrwoman?" Rhias leaned back indolently in her chair, balancing it on two legs with her legs resting on the table. There was a quiet tension in the air that she hoped would bleed away with a little whine and reassurance. "It's not like it's the first time we've had someone step down around here. Whatsherbutt...Rhyssone? T'ech? We can handle anything."

More wine. She paused to roll it around on her tongue, savoring the flavor. Sometimes there were benefits to rank.

"I like change. Keeps us from stagnating. Disappearing up our own asses like those piss stains at Fort Weyr," her lip curled involuntarily. "We're famous for change, aren't we? I'd hate to disappoint."

I could call for company but I don't think it would help the situation. Melacyth preened her toes casually. I honestly don't understand why they don't just occupy each other into the night. Half the Weyr thinks they do that anyways.

Rhias choked on her wine, coughing to remove it from her lungs and nearly toppling out of her chair with sudden laughter. Melacyth hadn't broadcast that particular thought beyond her and Rezierth so she waved away any concern and confusion with a broad grin. "Sorry, Mel's being a bit of a shaffit today. You know her."

Don't die on wine. That would be a terribly undignified way to go.

"Anyways, I'd rather Talora retire before she goes bullshaffit insane and tears this whole place down around her. Nobody'd be havin' fun then."

Rezeirth yawned, considering the idea. You know, she conceded, if I could convince Aniese, I believe that would do nicely. Rhias taught Aniese many things, or so Aniese explained to me. But she didn't teach her how to go about doing it, did she? Perhaps Rhias can teach her that last bit.

Aniese had leaned across the table in concern when Rhias choked, but she sat back as the girl coughed and smiled. Then she became aware, at least in vague, of what Rezeirth was talking about. She turned in her seat and aimed a glare through the wall.

Would you cut that out! Rhias and I aren't doing anything and I don't need to be 'taught,' thank you very much!

Rhias told you about something that is a form of stress relief, Rezeith pointed out, maintaining her very above-it-all aloofness. I'm just saying, I don't think you've ever done that, have you exactly?

Reze!

Or you'd be less stressed out.

Aniese groaned and buried her face in her hands, then shoved the roll in her mouth. Rhias's words made her look up again.

"Well," she said thoughtfully, chewing on the roll, "it's true that she should retire before she goes insane. I guess I just... didn't realize that she was on the verge of going insane. Or something. I thought she was doing well... I thought Vaioa was doing well." She took another bite, then plucked moodily at the roll. "Change could signify instability, or even lead to it."
