Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

I hope you're happy. Nasuth grumbled sleepily. He stretched his huge jaws in a yawn, as E'na scrambled around near his chest, working to finish packing her things to his straps. She didn't reply except by possibly tightening the last strap a tad too tight.

Nasuth snorted and leaned down to put one of his large, faceted eyes at her level. Now, now, there's no need for that. I'm up and ready to go. And I'm not even asking why you want to do this, he told her, his mental tone highly amused. Nasuth leaned down further, his breath warming her face. Do you know why? The dragon paused for an exaggerated moment, enjoying his own melodrama. Because I already know.

"If you know already, then why are you even bringing it up?" E'na snapped, her hands on her hips as she looked up at him. Because it's fun to tease you. Nasuth replied as he proffered a forearm for her to mount. And it's just so easy, he teased as she settled on his neck.

"Shut up." E'na told him, though her tone was more embarrassed than irritated. Nasuth walked out to his ledge and launched himself into the air above Igen Weyr. E'na gave him the visualization for Vaioa and the pair winked between.

D'lev was watching the sunrise over Vaioa from the ledge of his weyr. He was dressed in only a pair of very old trousers, cut off at the knee and badly hemmed by his unskilled hands. The morning air was a little chilly, but he preferred the cold to the harsh rasp of clothing against his skin. The trousers were okay, though just barely, due to the fact that they were now so worn they were practically transparent.

Imith let out a sleepy, contented sigh from behind him and curled into a tighter ball. He glanced back at her and shook his head fondly. The green always waited too long to feed. Almost inevitably, she then woke up in the early morning with hunger pains strong enough to wake him. And for some reason, Imith would not go to the feeding pens without him. If not for that, D'lev would still be fast asleep. Ah well, it was part and parcel of being a dragonrider, and D'lev was far too young a rider to be inured to the wonder of his bond with the creature laying behind him.So he sat on the ledge with her and admired the sun as it rose over the desert.

As the gloom of the early morning finally gave way to the bright blue of full daylight, D'lev noticed a relatively large dragon wink out of between over Vaioa. The greenrider squinted to make out the dragon's details. He appeared to be brown, with scarlet wingsails and markings on his underbelly. "Imith, is that Nasuth?" D'lev asked idly, recognizing the large brown from Igen. He'd hatched from an Igen clutch the year before D'lev had Impressed Imith. The greenrider took a second to remember the brown's bonded. Odd woman. Very closed off. She'd been a candidate for a full turn before Impressing, and D'lev had never really gotten to know her despite hours of chores together.

I think it is, Imith finally answered him, tracking the other dragon's slow glide into the bowl. The brown landed gracefully and they both watched his rider dismount and head into the lower caverns. Should I say hi? Imith asked him eagerly, turning her head to regard her rider. D'lev grimaced and shook his head. "Let's just," he paused to think of a tactful way to decline,"give them time to settle in." While it'd be nice to see a familiar face, E'na wasn't exactly welcoming from what he remembered of her.

**********

Later that day at dinner, D'lev was minding his own business, the business of meatrolls, when he became aware of someone staring at him. The greenrider looked up quickly, in time to catch E'na sharply turn her head away. She was sitting across the aisle, a plate full of half-eaten food in front of her. Now that they'd almost made eye contact, D'lev felt compelled to go say hello. It wasn't that he disliked the brownrider exactly, but she was really awkward to talk to. Worse than Mie even, the brownrider that had given him a tour of Vaioa. Were awkward personalities required to Impress a brown dragon? D'lev resolved to find out at a later time.

He picked up his plate and walked over to the opposite table. The seat directly across from E'na was empty, so he plunked down and set his plate on the table before greeting her. "Good evening E'na," D'lev began, "are you well?"

"Yes." The brownrider replied, her face blank and her tone flat. If she felt anything at being acknowledged by a familiar person, it wasn't evident.

D'lev waited a few moments to see if she'd elaborate further, but the woman didn't. "And Nasuth?"

"He is also well," she replied before falling silent again. E'na kept direct eye contact with him though, not looking down or to the side. He shifted in his seat and glanced briefly away.

"So are you guys here visiting someone....?" D'lev trailed off, though his tone rose in a question. He found it hard to imagine that scenario though. It would require E'na having friends, which he deemed unlikely. Friends generally talked to each other and she clearly didn't care for the activity.

"No, we're transferring here." E'na responded, still staring directly at him.

"Oh, er that's great." D'lev responded and rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. If he at all suspected that she'd continue to seek him out, he would work harder on making some friends here. If only so that he had some people to sit with reliably at meals. "What wing are you assigned to?" The greenrider asked, dreading her answer.

"Granite. You?" She replied, surprising him with her monosyllabic prompt.

D'lev gave an internal sigh of relief and told her, "Basalt. I haven't met my wingleaders yet, but I think I will like them." He finished, throwing an inane comment into the silence between them. Truthfully the greenrider had no idea whether he'd get along with the higher ups.

E'na didn't reply and finally looked away, down at her plate. They sat in silence for several minutes while D'lev struggled to come up with something else to talk about. Anything else. Finally he gave up and pushed out his chair to stand. "Well that was a good...talk," he said and winced at his word choice, "it was nice to see you. Please tell Nasuth I said hello." The greenrider gave a little wave and hastily exited the dining hall without glancing back. E'na watched him go, perhaps a little mournfully if someone squinted at her expression hard enough, before returning her attention to her dinner.
