Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The easygoing Blue and his rider were having good-natured ribbing in their weyr as evening fell.

I'm just saying, now that Thread has stopped for the winter, it might be a good time to visit the outpost in the South, Notalith angled. We won't be as needed up here. For a little while, anyway, we could afford to break away.

M'ril knew that Notalith was incredibly fond of hard work and staying busy, so the Blue could only really have one motivation. You just want to have a nosy at what's going on down there, don't deny it. And I'm sure the idea of lounging on a beach is tempting.

Of course I want to have a nosy! We haven't sen it yet, and rumors are that they're building some kind of Weyrhold!

I am sure it's hard to construct a traditional Hold on a beach, M'ril mused, temporarily distracted.

Yes! So we must see how they have done it, pressed Notalith. When M'ril didn't reply, he said cheekily, Besides, K'dyn and Scherezath haven't been yet, and we have to beat them to it.

Oh, do we? Replied M'ril lightly.

Yes! Notalith insisted.

M'ril stood and stretched. Outside, dusk was falling. He had eaten dinner in the Dining Hall with his Marble wingmates, and returned up here with the intention of polishing his straps. They had not needed much work, however, and now he was feeling restless. "I'm going to go down to the Lower Caverns," he told his dragon. "Not that I don't love your company," he added fondly.

I can still bother you in the Lower Caverns, Notalith pointed out, teasing.

"Don't I know it," M'ril replied with a lopsided grin. The day Notalith stopped bothering him would be the day he would not be able to live.

Nica, dark against the backlit sky, uncurled from the top of his dresser and followed him down the staircase into the Weyrbowl. Chelsea, the little terror, was nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, M'ril thought with a mixture of regret and relief. He had affection for the little green, but she was just so hard to manage compared to Nica, and he didn't need her causing trouble on an evening off. Nica landed on his shoulder and curled up around his neck as he entered the Lower Caverns.

As his eyes adjusted to the glowlight, M'ril found a couple of small groups of riders, scattered throughout. A good opportunity for chatting with someone, he decided with a smile. What struck his fancy tonight? He had a good relationship with many of the riders of the Weyr, but he felt instead like meeting someone new.

There, a copperrider, sat alone. She looked like she had just sat down. M'ril grinned and snagged two mugs of ale before approaching her. "Evening," he said cheerfully. "Mind if I join you?"

It had been a rather lazy day for Wystra. It was an off day for her. No duties, no drills, no plans. And Faranth it was wonderful! She'd been able to sleep in late (which was amazing) and had practically spent the entire day spoiling Sofuseth. The big copper was quite content this evening when she had left their weyr to spend time in the lower caverns.

It had been nice. The pair of them hadn't had a day like that together in a while. Usually she was busy when she was alone and when they were doing things together it was for drills or patrols or any number of other things. So just the fact she could take her sweet time while oiling her behemoth was very welcome.

Very welcome indeed.

Wystra couldn't help but grin at the drowsiness she detected in her dragon's mind voice. He was always so emotional and on guard around others so it was nice he was feeling so relaxed right now. She figured he would probably nap in the diminishing light of the sun while she enjoyed herself. He wouldn't truly sleep until she was back in her weyr with him.

Pushing Sofuseth from her mind, the petite rider paused as she entered the lower caverns, eyeing those present. There was no one here she was overly familiar with besides a few of her wingmates. Pursing her lips together in obvious disappointment, she made her way to the first empty spot she could find, plopping down in the seat with little to no grace.

She allowed herself to wallow for a moment before sighing and leaning back in her seat to observe the others. It was quiet tonight, nothing rowdy seemed to be going on.

Contemplating whether or not she should just head back to her weyr, she didn't notice someone approach her until he spoke up, jarring her from her thoughts. Blinking owlishly at him, it took her a moment to respond but she quickly motioned for him to sit down. "Sorry," she said with a wide grin. "You startled me for a moment."

The downside to her sudden surprise was that it had completely woken up Sofuseth. Wystra could feel his sudden awareness and hurriedly went to nip him in the bud.

I'm fine. It's fine. We're fine, she told him firmly.

But-

No buts! I was just lost in thought and he surprised me. Nothing to worry about.

Sensing his grudging acceptance, she turned her attention back to her companion. She leaned forward, chin pillowed in her hand as her finger tapped her lip. "You know," she said suddenly, "I sometimes dislike being in a large weyr. You see so many people that everyone seems familiar but you don't really know them."

Wystra knew she'd seen him before, but that could have easily been in passing so she gave up trying to place him. "Well, I'm Wystra, Sofuseth's rider. And who might you be?" she asked, tilting her head slightly in question.

M'ril grinned as he sank into the seat across from the copperrider. Her expression ranged from surprised, to confused, to thoughtful. She was pretty, he decided, and grinned again at her question.

"It's alright," he reassured her. "I can't say I would have come up with your name either. One problem with as busy a place as this!" He let out a bark of laughter. "Wystra, eh? A pretty name for a pretty woman."

He stroked his stubbled chin thoughtfully and then smiled, spreading his hands wide. "I'm M'ril. Of Notalith. We fly in Marble Wing."

Who are you talking to? Interrupted his Blue.

Copperrider Wystra, M'ril responded happily. Thought it was a good night to meet someone new!

You think that every night, Notalith accused.

Hey, nothing wrong with meeting new people. Keeps life interesting.

M'ril refocused his attention on Wystra. "So, what are you up to tonight? Any business in the Lower Caverns, or just here for pleasure?"

Nica, who had remained curled up around M'ril's shoulders, looked up at Wystra before chirping curiously. Who was this stranger that his pet was meeting with? M'ril gave the blue firelizard a caress on his eyeridges to quiet him.
