Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was the lazy part of the day. There wasn't much going on, no chores to do, no lessons to attend. Not that she'd enjoy attending lessons, Fiacha thought to herself, snorting quietly. She'd had the same lessons for the past five turns, simply taught by different people. She was probably one of the most well prepared candidates at the weyr and she was definitely the oldest.

Letting out a small sigh, she was distracted by a chirp beside her. Looking over, she spotted Irisal sitting beside her. He nudged a small ball with his snout, a sound of inquiry emerging as he looked back up at her. With a small smile she picked up the soft ball and gave it a toss. With a happy trill the big blue took off after the toy.

Shaking her head at his antics, her thoughts returned to where they were before Iri had shown up again. Lelia's letters had been very encouraging even though she'd been here turns already. Her ill twin was still hopeful that Fiacha would Impress. Fiacha was still unsure if this was the path she wanted, but she would accede to her sister's wishes and stay at least until she was too old to be considered for Impression. She was worried though that she was letting Lelia down and that this would be her last turn here as a candidate.

Her thoughts were once again interrupted, but this time not by a chirp. This time it was a thwap with an open wing. Narrowing her eyes, she glared at Iri as he dropped the ball he was carrying in his mouth and happily waddled over to plop in her open lap. At his sigh of contentment she shook her head, glare mellowing out. "You never do like me thinking gloomy thoughts?" she murmured to him aloud, reaching out with a finger to stroke his grey muzzle.

Deciding to turn her thoughts to happier things, she looked around. There weren't many people near. It would be nice to have someone to talk to. Fiacha had never liked being alone. Irisal helped that some, but an actual person who could talk with her might be better. Not really seeing anyone she knew (and she knew a lot of people now) she let her head fall back against the wall with a quiet 'thunk.' Maybe she should just get up and find someone to pester?

Aeljir never quite knew what to do with himself, at times like these.
It was a relatively slow day, by the Weyr’s standards, but he couldn’t seem to settle down and just enjoy the stretch of free time at his disposal. He had no craft to pursue in his off hours, no friends or family to while away the evenings with, now that Kirjol had resigned from wher Candidacy. He couldn’t say he enjoyed the chores he was tasked with, and some of the novelty of the lessons had worn off, but Vaioa fed and housed him - did everything short of clothing him, really - and all for a comparatively trivial amount of work. He had a hard time justifying going back for seconds at a meal, never mind taking an afternoon off.

Speaking of clothing, he hadn’t figured out what he was going to do when the knees on his last good pair of pants wore out, but that was a problem for another day. For the time being, he just needed to find something to distract from the odd combination of boredom and guilt that had beset him after lunch - and yet, no matter where he looked, not even the most menial of tasks presented itself.

They’d not needed any help in the kitchens. The only supply train due in today had arrived first thing in the morning, which he knew because he’d helped unload it himself. He hadn’t even been able to find someone in the lower caverns yet, though he’d been wandering around for the better part of a candlemark now. He didn’t think he’d last much longer in the tunnels, either - even after months at the Weyr, he still despised being underground.

Chani, at least, seemed to be enjoying their outing, draped over his right shoulder and lightly dozing. She was still a tiny thing, though she no longer fit in the palm of his hand, and he supposed what he really should do was carry her back to the Candidates’ barracks for a bath and an oiling. By the time he turned a corner and spotted a vaguely familiar face – a fellow Candidate, he was fairly sure – he was halfway to the realization that he had no clue what the most direct route back to the weyrbowl might be.

His train of thought neatly derailed, he pulled up short, and fought down the ludicrous urge to apologize. He hadn't even come close to bumping into her, though he did hope he wasn't interrupting anything. Offering a little nod in greeting, he ducked his head, gaze sliding away towards he wall - a more subtle way of avoiding eye contact, he hoped, than staring at his shoes.
"Sorry, um. I was just headed out to the weyrbowl, if I can find it again." He huffed a laugh, tone rueful, before adding: "I'm Aeljir - I'm not sure we've met?" Well, not properly, anyway. She must be one of the older Candidates in the class, but he was positive, now, that he recognized her from lessons.

Spotting movement from the corner of her eye, Fiacha turned to eye the younger man who has rounded the corner of the tunnel she was sitting in. On first glance he appeared around her height, though he seemed kind of thin. He looked vaguely familiar, though she couldn't place his name. He must be one of the newer candidates then, she didn't know them all yet, especially the males.

He nodded to her, but then looked to the side. She couldn't help but tilt her head in curiosity at his behavior. Maybe he was shy? Well, no need to point it out and make him feel worse. She hopped up, brushing off her clothing, and gave him a grin. "Well, hello Aeljir, nice to meet you. I'm Fiacha. And this here is Irisal," she said, pointing to the blue firelizard perched on her shoulder.

"It's okay if you don't know your way around quite yet." She was trying to be reassuring. "The weyr is a big place and is kind of confusing, especially if you're not from here. I know it took me forever to get the layout down. That's how it is for most candidates brought in from holds and halls." Fiacha could remember her days of getting lost when she was first brought to the weyr. It was so much different than any place she'd ever been before, nothing like her home.

"You know, I don't mind showing you how to get to the weyrbowl," she offered with another smile. "I have nothing to do right now anyway." Iri chirped his approval, flaring her wings out slightly. Fiacha rolled her eyes at her firelizard. "You just want to go flirt with the greens sunning in the bowl again." Iri very obviously ignored her words, looking away from her with a huff and causing Fiacha to laugh. After composing herself, she looked back at Aeljir. "So, what do you say?"

The other Candidate seemed cheery enough, and didn’t hesitate to introduce herself. Glancing back towards her, he nodded amiably, wary expression softening into a small smile.
“You, too. Oh, and this is Chani,” he added hastily, realizing he’d neglected to introduce the green that was snuggled into his collar. She didn’t offer a greeting of her own, shy thing that she was, but her eyes whirled in soft blue from where she peered up at Irisal, head tucked beneath Aeljir’s chin.

The Weyr is a big place and is kind of confusing…
His smile turned a bit sheepish, and he swept a hand across the back of his head, but freely admitted:
“I’ve been here a few months, but they’ve had me on grounds chores. Never been this far into the caverns before.” He’d never wanted to be, really, and a guide back out to the 'bowl sounded marvelous.

He kept silent through her exchange with Irisal, though, amusement crinkling his eyes at the corners. Only when she turned back to him did he nod, tucking his hands into his pockets.
“That’d be… great, actually. Bit small, these hallways. I’ll be happy for some fresh air.”
Shifting back towards the wall – ensuring she’d have plenty of room to maneuver around him, regardless of which direction she chose – he cast about for a topic of conversation, and eventually settled for the usual:
“You’ve been here a lot longer, sounds like? Just as a Candidate, or did you grow up in the Weyr?”

At the mention of Chani, Fiacha turned her attention to the green. "Oh she is a little darling!" she exclaimed, peering a little closer. "She's nothing like my sister's green firelizard. Her green is a menace. I try to send Iri to her has much as possible to prevent her from sending her own," she added with a laugh. "And as a bonus Iri gets exercise. Otherwise he'd get fat." That comment got her another whack with a wing, causing more laughter from the woman. She seemed to enjoy antagonizing her blue.

When he mentioned only having been her a few months, she nodded to herself. "Since I didn't know your name right off the bat I figured that you couldn't have been here for very long. I know most everyone here unless they're new." It was one of the advantages to being here so long. She had a lot of free time on her hands, what with chores being second nature and lessons being so easy, so it was always nice to just go and visit someone who was free.

As she stepped past Aeljir to start to lead him outside, she shot him a look. He thought the hallways were small? Casting a look around, she realized he must just not like being under all the rock. Maybe he's a little claustrophobic? Not wanting to pry, she didn't bring it up. She was distracted by his question anyway. "Oh, yes, I've been here a while. Five turns I believe? I'm holdbred and apprenticed at the beastcraft hold so I had just as much trouble getting around at first as you seem to be having," she explained, throwing him a smile over her shoulder.

Oh she is a little darling!
His tentative smile brightened into a grin. Chani wasn’t quite full-grown yet, but she'd been a sweetheart from the moment she’d hatched. She was a bashful thing, too, but Jir made a proud (albeit accidental) firelizard owner.
I try to send Iri to her as much as possible…
“I haven’t tried sending her anywhere just yet,” he admitted, eyes crinkling as he watched Irisal give his person a playful swat. “She’s still pretty young. She was the smallest one, actually, from that clutch - a month or so ago, in the kitchens?” Even now, she could only barely wrap herself all the way around his neck, though she seemed to prefer tucking herself into his collar than sitting up on a shoulder.

Turning to follow Fiacha down the corridor, he hung back just a bit – not so much that conversation would be difficult, but enough to stay out of her way as she lead him back outside. It was a novel impulse, wanting to brag about a pet, but he settled for reaching back to give the green a scratch under the chin instead. Fiacha, with her blue, would probably have sympathized, but he was content to let her steer the conversation.
Oh, yes… Five turns I believe?
He could hardly imagine it; he’d Stood at only one hatching so far, himself. Still, he’d been around long enough to know it wasn’t necessarily unusual for Candidates to wait so long. The weyrbrats, especially, joined their classes young, and might be passed up for dozens of hatchings. Fiacha, though, had started out as a Holder – a beastcrafter, even, which sounded to Aeljir like a pretty marvelous thing to be. The revelation startled a confession out of him:

“We looked after some herdbeasts. My family,” he clarified, uncomfortable with the topic but unwilling to leave the comment hanging awkwardly between them. He hurried to explain: “We lived outside of a small cothold. Just had a small plot of land and a little shelter, holders paid us to keep an eye on their herds. Move ‘em around during the summer when everything got real dry, you know. We weren’t… trained, or anything, but we even took in some wherries a few times. I spent a lot of my time hunting, but I liked the animals.

"I never thought I'd wind up a Candidate," he continued, tone contemplative. Tucking his hands into his pockets and kept his eyes on the hallway, expression carefully blank. He'd left home years ago, and had no plans to see his parents again, but this would be the first time he'd ever been separated from his brother for any length of time, now that Kirjol had decided to seek his fortunes elsewhere. The change was recent enough that Jir was taking care to avoid mentioning him, though it seemed like a pretty futile gesture.
"Maybe if this doesn't pan out, I'll see if the beastcraft hall could use another worker," he decided, sliding a quick smile Fiacha's way. The Weyr had been marvelous to him, but he'd been Searched fairly late, and didn't know that his chances of Impression were especially good. It was easy not to dwell on dragonriding, though, with lessons and chores to keep him busy, and the dining hall forever stocked with food.

Fiacha nodded. "Yes, she is a bit young to be sending messages right now. A month old, you say?" she asked, thinking back. Yes, she remember the clutch though she hadn't participated. She already had Irisal and felt no need to add to her collection. There was also the fact that while he got along splendidly with other firelizards, she didn't think he'd be happy sharing her attention with one. "Just give her time. But you should already be training her. Otherwise she'll turn into a menace," she advised with a nod.

She glanced at Aeljir over her shoulder from time to time as they walked. It was interesting hearing about him talking about his life before the weyr. "There's nothing wrong with not being trained," she told him, recognizing the hesitance in mentioning it. "You just won't have as much specialized knowledge. And really, that in itself can be learned overtime just be working with them." She had to admit she missed working with them. Sure, she got to help out sometimes with chores, but not often.

"Well, if you don't make it here I'm sure they'd be glad to have you, especially since you do have some idea about taking care of beasts," she told him as she threw him a grin over her shoulder before sobering slightly. "I never thought I would be a candidate either. It was always my twin's dream, but she's always been so ill they'd never consider her. I had been visiting her after I'd become a journeywoman when I was Searched. I.. honestly hadn't wanted to accept, But Lelia wanted me to try," she explained with a shrug and a troubled frown.

But you should already be training her. Otherwise she’ll turn into a menace.
Darting a glance at his shoulder – and the shy green clinging to it – he couldn’t help but feel doubtful. She was such a mild-mannered thing, usually perfectly happy to do anything he asked her. But then again, he’d never had a proper pet before. If a former beastcrafter was recommending he do something more, he probably ought to pay attention.

“What should I be doing to train her? She seems to listen well, but you’re right, she’s only about a month old. I wouldn’t really know what to do if she decided to misbehave.” He had no qualms admitting it – it might embarrass him, just a bit, but he’d long ago learned not to be shy when it came to a lack of knowledge or experience. It was the only way to get things done, really, and he’d taken on a lot of odd (and very temporary) jobs while he and Kirjol had been on the road. He had a little bit of experience doing a great many things, but tending to firelizards couldn't be counted among them.

…that in itself can be learned over time just by working with them.
He nodded emphatically, thinking back to his own experience with wherries and herdbeasts, limited though it was. It would be very interesting, pursuing something like that as a craft; there’d be a lot for him to learn, he was sure. Things his parents didn’t know, or would never have taught him.
…I’m sure they’d be glad to have you.
“I’d hope so,” he said with a small smile. Having never formally apprenticed in any craft, he rather doubted anyone would want him per se. But if he aged out of Candidacy, all he’d need to worry about was convincing someone to accept him. It wouldn’t be the easiest thing in the world, but it could be done.

At the mention of her twin, and some sort of illness, his expression scrunched up in sympathy. He didn’t know whether to say anything – it seemed like a topic she might prefer to avoid. But then again, she had brought it up, and so he tentatively offered:
“I’m sorry to hear that. I hope she’s doing well…? Or better, perhaps?”
He didn’t know where to go from there, though, and floundered a bit. The last thing he wanted to do was upset her, or pry into her business.

Raising her eyebrows in surprise, she glanced back at him. "Well if she listens already you're doing good, especially with her being so young. It's just that a lot of baby firelizards love causing mischief so getting them to listen is the hardest part. The easiest way to train them, though, if to figure out what you want them to learn and reward them with treats," she finally said, turning back around to watch where she was going. They should be out in the weyrbowl soon.

"If you want her to deliver messages you will probably want someone's help. You could send her to a specific person, that way you can get her used to locating people," she added with a nod. She wasn't an expert by far, but it worked with Iri and it worked with his sister's green, so she supposed it would work for everyone's firelizards.

The pair of them soon emerged into the bright light. Fiacha had to squint, having been inside for a while. Seemed like it was still early afternoon. As Aeljir stumbled slightly over his words as he tried to comfort her, Fiacha couldn't help but tear up a little. She hadn't really talked to a lot of people about her sister, but with the few she had no one had really asked about her. That fact that Aeljir had, even though they'd only known each other for possibly 20 minutes, touched her.

Turning slightly, she lunged at him, engulfing him in a tight hug. "You're a good person, Aeljir," she said with a watery laugh, quickly letting him go. She didn't want him to be too uncomfortable to talk to her again. "And to answer your question, she has good days and bad days, she's not better or worse. I cherish every day she's still here because we really don't know how long that will be."

...so getting them to listen is the hardest part.
He chuckled, and shook his head. It had been a bit of a shock, when he'd first arrived, to see the hordes of firelizards that all called Vaioa home, and since then he'd certainly noticed many of them behaving badly (particularly in the dining hall). But...
"Oh, no. She's not much of a troublemaker. She's a little shy. Seems happy enough just to stick with me, most of the time."

Treats were an excellent idea, though. He wouldn't want to spoil her, but maybe next time he stopped by the kitchen to check on Kaelia, he'd ask whether there were any scraps they might be willing to part with. If he were to have her send messages for him, it only made sense that he reward her for the effort. At the moment, however, there really wasn't a pressing need to train her to do any such thing. He had no one to send letters to, these days, and the thought rankled. He'd known, of course - it wasn't exactly a secret - but it wasn't something he liked to dwell on.

He hadn't realized they were nearing an exit, and so when they turned a corner into bright sunlight, he pulled up short, scrunching his eyes against the glare. It was a huge relief, just being back outside in the fresh air, and the sight of the weyrbowl shook him from his thoughts. He'd fallen into what had probably become an uncomfortable silence, distracted by his thoughts, but when he turned to apologize to Fiacha, she sprang at him.

Stiffening, he sucked in a startled breath - but, oh. It was just a hug. That should have been obvious, probably, but it had been a while since he'd been given one, and he wasn't sure what he'd done to deserve it. Probably he should just be grateful that he'd only flinched a bit, and not made some embarrassing noise in his surprise - a yelp, for instance.
You're a good person, Aeljir.
The tips of his ears felt hot, and he knew he was probably blushing terribly. But, having recovered somewhat from his confusion, he reached his arms up and tentatively returned the gesture. He hadn't expected it, but that wasn't to say he minded.
...because we really don't know how long that will be.
He swallowed, feeling something tighten in his throat. He and his brother might not have parted on good terms, but he couldn't even imagine... It would be one thing, to lose him; accidents happened. And it would be terrible, but that was life, sometimes. But to live with that sort of uncertainty for years? It didn't bear thinking about. And so, even though it sounded like there wasn't much hope of Fiacha's sister ever getting better, he found himself glancing down at his feet and mumbling:
"Well, hopefully one day they're all good. And I hope you get to see her a lot, even though you're here...?" He hadn't ever heard of a Candidate taking frequent trips outside the Weyr, but maybe there was some altruistic dragonrider that could take her quickly there and back again, from time to time.
