Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kamene had made friends since coming to Vaioa Weyr, a fact she was thankful for. She was doing well in her classes and was kind off glad she did not impress that first time as she had had (and still did!) so very much to learn, though Kamene imagined that those who impressed with little time as Candidates got the training as weyrlings. Still, she was glad for the time and the classes.

Despite all of that, she missed having the time to create, to design. It was silly, she knew. She had a chance to become a Rider, to help protect Pern from Thread, Yet she missed spinning and weaving.

A letter had arrived from her parents, with a small woven swath from her father and a promise to visit soon. So Kamene took the bit of free time that evening and sat with the letter and swath in the common room and used her drop spindle. It was soothing, familiar, nice. She would not, in one night, make enough thread to be useful, but the act itself was comforting.

It was no secret that Madra enjoyed candidacy. Shards, she more or less flaunted her status as a 'future rider'. However, dragons weren't all that was ever on her mind. Granted, the non-dragon things tended not to be very pleasant, but sometimes the inside of her mind actually was warm and welcoming. Such as when she was thinking about her friends. Because yes, she had somehow come to have friends now.

A familiar head of red hair caught her attention as she strode through the barracks. Kamene was one of the few people who she not only put up with but genuinely liked. She was also doing something which... she wasn't entirely sure what she was doing. Someone she liked doing something new was more than enough to make her curious.

Madra approached the other candidate boldly and shamelessly, as she was wont to do. "What are you doing?" she asked, leaning against the chair Kamene sat in.

"Hi, Madra!" Kamene smiled as she glanced up, used to Madra's seemingly rude behavior and not really finding it rude at all. At least not from a friend to a friend. "Spinning. It's one of the most rudimentary parts of being a Weaver, and I guess I was feeling a bit homesick."

Kamene was good enough at a task she'd mastered as a child that even as she looked at her fellow red-head, she did not falter with the drop spindle. The thread itself was a golden brown color, not the most beautiful, but a good color for various work. "I could teach you how to do it if you wanted. It's really not that difficult, and I do find it relaxing, but then I've been doing it since I was a child, so I guess I would."

Kamene's smile was enough to coax on out of Madra in return. She sat down in a chair beside the one in which the other candidate sat. Curiosity bled into her voice when she inquired, "you still practice your weaving? I thought most crafter candidates dropped their crafts when they were searched." The only reason she could think of for someone to keep practicing was that they genuinely enjoyed their craft. That or they didn't really think they would impress, but she didn't think anyone in their right mind would admit to that. Besides, Kamene seemed like she had a good chance.

Of course, she had said that she was feeling homesick. Perhaps she was just doing it tonight and didn't actively practice anymore. That would make more sense.

Surprise flickered across Madra's face at the offer. She didn't have any real interest in weaving, but it did look interesting when Kamene did it. Besides, if she actually enjoyed the craft it may be worth a shot. With a shrug of her shoulders, she grinned and said, "sure, why not."

Kamene shrugged, though she was not offended or bothered by Madra's question. "I started weaving before I was old enough to be apprenticed. Dad would teach me to spin or let me do a line or two while Mom and my brother did their vocal exercises. I do enjoy it, but there's also an element of home in it. And if I don't impress," she shrugged again to show that of course she hoped she would, but it would not be the end of her world if she didn't, "I'd like to not lose all my skills."

At Madra's agreeing to learn, Kamene beamed. "Spinning's easy once you get the hang of it. It's how we turn the raw material into usable thread or yarn, depending on thickness. The main things you do while the spindle spins is keep it steady and maintain a consistent stream of roving, that's the material. Then you hold it taught while you wind it."

Kamene wound the length she'd gotten so she could show Madra. Once it was secured, she gave the spindle a spin, twisting a short length and then began slowly letting it out with the hand holding the roving while the other moved between keeping the spindle spinning and making sure the yarn was staying even. "It's not hard, really, it's just as you get better you pick up tricks."

Madra nodded easily at the explanation. "Makes sense." She then began to watch Kamene's demonstration, nodding every now and then as she explained. Had it been anyone else, the nodding would probably just be to make the person think she was listening. Truth be told, she didn't really care about what other people had to say. But not this time. Kamene spoke and Madra actually listened. However, the next thing she said didn't actually have to do with weaving.

"I don't know what I'd do if I didn't impress," she murmured. It was a confession, something very rarely heard from the likes of Madra. She was listening, yes, but she was also thinking. That hot-headed confidence returned to her voice when she said, "not that I have to worry. I will impress." A pause before she added, "I don't think you should worry either. You'll impress too." Her voice was an iota softer, but the confidence was still there. There was no alternative to impression for Madra. Kamene had another route, but for reasons that she couldn't explain, she was still certain that she'd see her on a dragon.

She changed the subject back to weaving then, as if what she'd just said was no big deal. "Do you know any tricks?" she asked.

Kamene was doing the simplest of spinning, what she'd learned as a child as her Harper mother told stories and her father started her learning. So it was easy to do that and listen to Madra or talk or multitask in anyway that did not require her hands. Which meant she did not miss Madra's mumbled confession.

She smiled to the other girl. "I've no doubt you will, but remember what we've learned in lessons, not impressing just means the right dragon wasn't born, not that there's anything wrong with us. But I'm sure yours will hatch." And she was. She was positive that both Madra and Kidrai would impress, and while she appreciated Madra's assurance about herself, she was not overly worried. Worst case scenario, she'd petition the Hall to assign her to Vaioa and stay close to them. And yet at the way that Madra expressed confidence about her, she felt her cheeks warming. "Thank you."

"And yep. Lots. How to ply, get fun effects, spinning is the basics, after carding and cleaning and all that...so most of your different textures start with spinning." Maybe not the kinds of tricks Madra thought she'd meant, but Kamene found it all fascinating.
