Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese stood alone in the council room, blood pounding in her ears. It wasn't anger that drove her, but adrenaline. There was a good bit of disbelief, too, but the more she thought about it, the less surprised she actually was.

Al'dai had returned from Southern just long enough to inform the Council that, the previous night-- in fact, in the middle of the night-- there had been a campwide ambush by the strangely intelligent felines. He had left, and Talora had delegated.

Delegating. She was doing more and more of that. Aniese had thought, initially, that Talora would jump to action: She was the Weyrwoman, it was entirely her concern and right to take care of it, but she had delegated it to Aniese. It was telling, though telling of what Aniese was scared to think about. Hadn't Talora and the rest of council agreed that going South and establishing a colony was a good idea? It had all been about the food, she thought grimly. And there had been no progress on that front.

And now, with Morasil and Zhiarth, they were moving even closer to establishing a Weyrhold base. Already thinking of raising a group of Weyrlings without having made any progress on the food front.

What was Talora thinking?

Well, she was probably thinking about how tiresome this governing thing was becoming.

Aniese shook her head and pushed the thought away. She didn't want to acknowledge the possibility. It seemed like things had just stabilized.

Well, the matter was pressing. It was time to take care of things down there. Get the Weyrhold formalized: A Weyr for dragons, a Hold for the people. The early discovery of caves was promising; they would need to be carved out and hollowed appropriately. Aniese pressed this into the wax tablet before her. A Hold, built on the shore, above the waterline. But with proper protections against the beasts-- felines. Caves wouldn't work; it would have to be buildings. She'd have to locate a builder with experience in building exposed coastal buildings, making them strong and sturdy and beach-capable as well as providing as much defense as a traditional Hold. With the caves overlooking the cove, there would be enough aerial defense, but should the felines attack again, they needed a permanent structure. The temporary Hall clearly hadn't done much. Aniese pressed this into the wax tablet too.

Finally, there was the matter of farming. She could find a Master or Journeyman in Farmercraft, she had no doubt about that. But the logistics... They might already have to clear some of the jungle, for the purposes of the Hold. Weyrhold, really, since the Hatching Sands and vital Weyr structures couldn't be built out of the caves. No, it would all have to be in buildings in the cove, aside from the actual rider and dragon living quarters. They could have a modified Lower Caverns, shared between Holders and Riders. Handlers would need quarters with the Holders. They would have to actually find Holders, who wanted to begin the hard work of tilling the land and producing food.

Aniese sighed and ran a hand through her hair, already mussed from similar actions. We have a lot to do, she thought grimly. We better make the Haching Sands a priority. Zhiarth must be close to Laying by now.

Rezeirth responded huffily. She may as well just lay them on the beach. She will be able to guard them there just as well.

Rezeirth! She won't feel protected on the open beach! They'll be exposed!

Who cares? It would be fine, Rezeirth insisted snappishly.

Aniese pursed her lips. Her Gold was speaking spitefully, jealously, and she didn't have the patience for it. They couldn't have sent you to the South, my dear. You're not gravid. It's no use being jealous about something you can't control.

Rezeirth's sulky silence told Aniese that she had been right on the head. What was more troubling, especially given Talora's recent behavior, was the state of Rezeirth's mood itself. She was alternately moody and sulky lately, though her arrogance and desire for attention had risen tenfold as well. Aniese wasn't used to seeing her Gold like this, although she knew how to handle her.

She pushed those thoughts aside and looked back down at her wax tablet. Right. Carving out the weyrs. We can get the miners and wherhandlers on that. Building the Weyrhold was harder, but she knew where she would find someone who could help.

I think it's time I paid a visit to Big Bay.
