Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

When Madra had been expelled from candidacy, Kidrai had gone to T'via first. His father was a respected, experienced rider. Not one of any particular rank, but still, Kidrai had hoped that he might have tried to change the candidatemasters' minds. Madra deserved a second chance. Her entire life, all her hopes and dreams, shouldn't, couldn't, be shattered by one mistake. He didn't know all the details of what had occurred to make the candidatemasters force her out; all he knew was that there had been a fight. It didn't matter, though. It wasn't as if Madra had killed someone, for Faranth's sake! She hadn't committed some heinous crime! She needed guidance, not punishment.

T'via had not seen things his way. The brownrider had sternly told Kidrai that he was better off not meddling in the affairs of others. That the candidatemasters did not act without reason. That violence among candidates had to be weeded out. He refused to speak to Eveline and the others. Even Rindoth was against the idea. Mother had been of no help, either.

That was the first time that Kidrai could remember being angry at his father. T'via was his hero, his teacher, his confidante. And he had let him down. And in turn, Kidrai had let Madra down. He wore an uncharacteristic frown as he returned to the barracks from his parents' weyr. There was a tense rigidness to his spine, and his hands kept clenching and unclenching. Avoiding eye contact with anyone else in the common room, he trudged into the girls' hallway, stopping at Kamene's door. She would know what to do. At the very least, she would provide some sort of comfort.

Raising a fist to half-heartedly knock on the door, he cleared his throat and called, "Kam. It's Kid. Can I come in?"

Madra was...a complicated issue for Kamene when she stopped to think about it. She could be a bully. She could be horrible, and she was generally not the kind of person that Kamene would normally be friends with. And yet she was. Not just because of the way Kid simultaneously acted like a puppy dog and lit up around her--though that might help, but just because she legitimately liked and got along with her...and maybe there were other thoughts, but they were well and truly suppressed.

Kamene hated that the other girl had gotten expelled. And she thought that maybe it was a bit harsh. At the same time, she could not really fault the Candidate Masters. She tried to walk very carefully with that around Madra. She would not pretend to approve of violence or bullying, but she would stand with her friend.

What was important now was making sure that Madra was not alone, not isolated, that she knew she was not a total pariah. And what would be important, when Madra was ready, would be helping her make amends so she could get back into Candidacy if she wanted. Or helping her find whatever place she did want and knowing she was not alone.

As Kid knocked on her door, Kamene bit her lip.

What else was important now was getting Kidrai through this and to the other side without doing anything stupid.

Opening the door, she smiled. "Of course you can!"

She had been expelled from candidacy. The concept was one she understood well enough. She was no longer allowed to stand in an attempt to impress and, if the candidatemasters had anything to stay about it, never would impress. All over one hit. One stupid hit. Sure, things had been said about her previous behavior, how she brought this on herself, how there had been reason to kick her out for a while now, that this was simply the straw that broke the wher's back, but she heard none of it. All she understood was that she was no longer able to impress because of some stupid hit to some stupid candidate who had earned it with how she talked to her.

Maybe it would have been easier to go back to the hold. After the wild anger had died down to realization and, eventually, misery, she had considered that. Except the people in the hold knew her. They knew how gleeful she had been about being searched, how she had bragged. There was a chance it would be a worse blow to her ego if she returned to the hold in disgrace without even having aged out (not that she would have aged out) than if she stayed. So she had fought tooth and nail to remain in the Weyr and been granted permission to stay. As a drudge.

Ah, irony, how she hated you.

A little fact about drudges: people don't move their things around for them. They also weren't allowed to sleep in the candidate barracks. Madra had chosen a time when she doubted that many others would be out and about to move her things. This was for a very good reason that definitely didn't have to do with shame, anger, or her eyes being red rimmed and wet. Because she refused to admit that she had been crying. Crying wasn't her. Crying was weak, soft, vulnerable. It was all the things she swooped in upon to establish herself as better than others. So when she walked toward her room and came across Kamene and Kidrai talking outside her open door she froze, praying that they wouldn't notice.

Kamene's smile normally would have elicited a blinding grin from Kamene. He loved seeing Kamene smile as much as he loved seeing Madra smile. They were two of the most important people in his life--that had happened so fast, but he wouldn't have it any other way. This time, while he did attempt a smile, the light was missing. His eyes were dull, and the action itself was somewhat forced. "I talked to T'via." There was a venom in his voice that sounded foreign and strange. "About Madra." And he did nothing. His fists clenched again. They unclenched...and he wrapped his arms around Kamene and pulled her close. His entire body sagged as the tension drained from it, leaving a defeated young man.

The only consolation to him was that Madra was still in the Weyr. He'd been afraid, after she'd gotten expelled, that she'd return to her Hold. The thought had kept him awake at night with a sick feeling in his stomach. Madra couldn't leave. He wasn't sure he could handle it (and he wasn't sure why he was so affected by the idea, either). She belonged in the Weyr. She was going to get a second chance, even if it killed him. Lifting his face out of Kamene's hair, he spotted movement out of the corner of his eye, and turned his head. A surprised gasp escaped him. "Madra."

Her eyes were red. He could tell even with her down the hall. His heart broke even more for her.

Of course she noticed the change in Kidrai's demeanor, almost as much as she noticed the way he said the name of his father, a man he idolized and adored. Whatever her own thoughts--which were far more conflicted and muddy than Kid's--her heart broke for him. When he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to him, she moved willingly, her own arms going around him and holding tight to offer comfort.

Before she could assure him that they would find a way to make this right, not that she had the first clue how. Whether the Candidate Masters had been wrong or not, she was not certain how much influence they could have to get them to bring her back. How exactly could they fix any of this? The thought was beyond frustrating.

She had not noticed Madra, largely because she was pressed against Kid's chest, but she did pull back a bit to look when Kid gasped her name. She felt weirdly guilty, though that didn't make sense, she'd been hugging, comforting a friend. "Hey." Madra could be here to visit them, but...oh..."um...if um...you're here to get your things, let us help. It'll go faster. And um, we could then um all hang out here, if you're free?"

They noticed her. She couldn't help but wonder whether she wanted them to or not, only to come to the frustrating discovery that she didn't know. She was supposed to know everything! Certainty was one of the things that held her together, but with recent events it felt like she was all but falling apart.

Whether she'd wanted them to notice her or not, at least they didn't comment on her eyes. That would have been unbearable.

"Hey." Madra liked to think that her voice was as smooth and commanding as it always was. If it did crack a little, then at least Kidrai and Kamene knew better than to comment on it. Kamene's observation and offer made her blink once, twice, thrice, and finally nod. They still wanted to hang around with her then, or at least Kamene did. Add it to the list of things she was currently having trouble wrapping her head around. Then again, maybe that was part of what had kept drawing her back to these two, that they were so bafflingly nice. "Yeah, alright," was said when she reminded herself to speak.
