Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It felt as if Madra had become a social pariah of sorts in the Weyr. Her absence from the candidate barracks certainly didn't stop the other candidates from talking about her. Very few of them had kind things to say. Somehow, even the weyrfolk and riders seemed to have something to say on the subject. Did you hear about that candidate who got expelled? I always thought she was ill tempered. Wouldn't want someone like that on a dragon. It was enough to rouse Kidrai into rare moments of anger. He defended Madra as often as he could, unafraid to butt into his fellow candidates' conversations and stick up for the woman to dragonriders and weyrfolk.

The anger always fizzled out soon enough, though. Always, it was replaced by a despairing sort of gloom. He missed Madra. He keenly felt her absence, and he was sure that Kam did too. Lessons were different without her there to form the third part of their trio. Meals were quieter, though he still had Kamene. He was eternally grateful for his best friend. She didn't let him wallow. She kept him in good spirits most of the time.

More importantly, she helped him keep Madra company. But today, he was visiting the red-haired ex-candidate on his own. He'd washed the dirt from chores and lessons off before leaving the barracks during the evening free period. If he was dressed a little nicer than normal, he didn't really notice. In his hand was a small bouquet of wild desert flowers that he'd begged his siblings to find for him while he attended his chores.

Maybe they would get a smile out of Madra's beautiful face. She was always gorgeous, but she was breathtaking when she smiled. Especially when she smiled at him. Knocking lightly on the door of her new living quarters, he hoped that she was alone. "It's Kid! I brought you something." The flowers were not the only gift. There was a bag slung over his shoulder as well.

She didn't want to think about her recent expulsion from candidacy. Unfortunately for her, her thoughts kept going down that route. She couldn't not think about it. The feeling was terrible, like she had lost a chunk of her identity along with her white knots. Madra was going to be a rider one day. That was the thought she had clung to ever since she had been searched. She had made it her purpose. Impress and fall into a world where everyone adored her. Everyone she encountered, from the drudges to the Weyrwomen, would respect her, love her, or want to be her.

That was what she felt should have happened, but she didn't. Instead she was a drudge. The lowest echeon, one of the people she had ruthlessly mocked. Banned from standing, marking her as an outcast among the Weyr. Yet she wasn't entirely alone. Kidrai and Kamene still spent time with her, which she couldn't understand. They had always been nice to her. Not just resepectful or fearful, but genuinely nice. Their bizarre sweetness had endured them to her. She still hadn't expected their friendship to last beyond something like this. That it had so far... she didn't know what to make of that.

Madra hadn't been sulking when Kidrai knocked. At least, not that she would admit to. If anyone asked, she was just 'doing nothing'. Just like some of the more idiotic weyrfolk seemed to think she would amount to. Nothing. This was decided just before the redhead opened the door. "Kid, wha-" she momentarily paused at the sight of the flowers. This wasn't the first time he had done something like this, but it still surprised her. It never failed to surprise her, really. She didn't quite smile, but it was something other than the undertone of sadness that she'd been unable to fight off lately. "What's up?" she finished her sentence by stepping aside and gesturing for him to come in. It wasn't like her residence in the barracks had been. This room was smaller, for one. She also hadn't had enough time to make it so much as resmeble a home. Hopefully he wouldn't notice.

He'd surprised her! Kidrai's smile was delighted, and he gave himself a mental thumbs up. Madra still looked so sad--he didn't think that the look in her eyes would go away for quite some time--but he thought that her expression shifted a bit towards something more positive. She stepped aside to let him in, and Kidrai brushed past her, blushing slightly as they touched. Clearing his throat, he turned to face her and held out the flowers. "These are for you. Thank Tim and Saria. Maybe they'll make this place a little more homey." He didn't miss how cold the room felt. But he knew that once Madra made it her own, it would be just as comfortable as her room in the barracks had been.

Biting his lip, Kidrai scratched the back of his head with his free hand. "Well, I thought maybe you wouldn't mind putting up with me for a little bit," he said cheerfully. He didn't want to make it seem that this was a pity visit. He'd made that mistake the first time. "I brought some drawings. Maybe you could critique them." He didn't add that the drawings were of draconic anatomy, for if he Impressed. Candidacy and Impression had become a taboo, as per the unspoken rule that had been created between them.

Face lighting up with an "oh" sort of expression, he hurriedly added, "I brought you sweets, too! And," his voice dropped, "Wine. Don't tell on me. It was a hassle to get." Strictly speaking, candidates weren't supposed to drink. Kidrai normally adhered to all of the rules. But he thought that a little bit of good Benden might cheer Madra up. He'd make sure they didn't get drunk. It was clear that he was pleased with himself, and eager to spend time with Madra. His smile never once faded, and his aquamarine eyes twinkled.
