Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

This is probably your fault. That accusation was slung towards the light of her life, her brown darling, the other half of her soul, Rauskazeth. A.K.A. the dragon who was most likely the reason she was heading off to meet her Wingleader. She knew that flight stunt would get them in trouble. It seemed like it there was a part of something that could potentially land her in hot water in would. Why not this as well?

Rauskazeth was hardly moved, Lana, it’s been a long time. The eggs will be ready to hatch soon. I don’t think they’re going to bring it up now. Besides, we are part of this Weyr, aren’t we? It was hardly anything to fret about in his mind. Then again, their transfer from their former Weyr had been ‘suggested’ over a rumored affair. It made sense for her to be wary about causing another scandal. That being said, chasing the senior queen was hardly a scandal.

Lana snorted. Yeah, brand new members. We can’t claim close as family status right away, you know.

I know, first we have to work hard and prove ourselves. However, I am certain that if we devote ourselves to the Weyr it will pay off. Don’t you agree? A moment of silence before a huff and a mumble of what sounded like ‘optimist’. She agreed though, he could feel it.

Back on the human side of things Lana came to a halt before Wingleader Al’dai’s door. Rather than give her time to worry she immediately reached forward and knocked. Best to dive in right away, right?

Would you please sit down?

No. I have never met Lana before. The first time I see her face-to-face, I will be on my feet. Al’dai was adamant about that one small fact. She doesn’t even know who her wingleader is. I’m not going to give her any further reason to think I’m unfit to lead.

Relax. We’ll be flying into Fall before you know it. Lerouth was alternately fitful and soothing. Your therapy is going really well!

I’m just lucky I can stay in my own Weyr for once, Al’dai grimaced in reply. Finally. And my own toilet.

What, bedpans getting to be too much? Lerouth chuckled mentally.

Al’dai rolled his eyes but did not stop pacing. He had asked Lana to come meet him when he had learned that she was a new rider to the Weyr and had been assigned to Sandstone.

Shells, how much longer until we can resume our responsibilities! He cursed mentally. He tired of the constant sore pain in his body and the monotonous chores he had been assigned. Still, paperwork was better than nothing, he reflected dully. Better that than still sitting in Infirmary with nothing to do.

You’re being pessimistic, Lerouth pointed out. Wounds take time to heal. That is normal. Be patient.

Al’dai was about to reply when there was a knock at the door. He stiffened and turned.

And you really shouldn’t be walking without your cane, Lerouth added reproachfully.

Bugger that, Al’dai swore. I’m not about to introduce myself as the weakest Wingleader in the Weyr, even if that’s what I am!

“Come in,” he called, steadying himself on the table in the entry and watching the door swing open.

Alright, it was time to do this. Time to face the beast. Be the brave little firelizard and look her wingleader in the eyes. Make (hopefully) polite small talk while continuing to wonder what she did to cause this. Oh Faranth, did he find out about that holder blood impersonation incident? In her defence, she was only fifteen at the time and also a massive nitwit. Wait a minute. She had been fifteen at the time. He wouldn't be bringing that up now! Not when she had a nice, long, impressive (potentially incident-speckled) history as a rider.

Questions continued the brownrider's mind when she entered the weyr. However, these questions didn't come anywhere close to reaching her face. Instead, Lana's face was mostly blank with just the tiniest hint of confidence and a whisper of a smirk. Nice, controlled, and hopefully something that said she was ready to take on the world while not making her look like a complete tailfork. Rauskazeth had once joked that she had 'resting bitranface'. This had better not be the day he was proven right.

Was she overthinking this? Maybe. Then again, she was meeting her new wingleader after transferring to a new Weyr, and not entirely on her own volition either. Overthinking the situation may prove to be worth it.

Lana knew better than to judge a book by its cover. But old habits died hard and covers were there for a reason, right? Logically speaking, she knew that this man ranked well above her and could directly impact her future. Yet she felt some of her worries disintegrate upon laying eyes on Al'dai for the first time. Something seemed... off. That subconscious thing that read enough of someone's body language to say 'this person is not entirely okay'. (Lana had always been observant. Although she hadn't realized it, some part of her noticed that he seemed to be putting some weight on that table. It was... odd. It set off that primal reassurance that said 'you could probably take this person in a fight', although that definitely wasn't something she wanted to do. Consciously, she had heard the gossip that her new wingleader had been in an accident of some sort, but she didn't have all the details. Yet.)

Don't stare. That thought was ridiculous. She didn't know what she was looking for; for all she knew there was nothing to stare at. None the less she made a point to avoid focusing her gaze at any one area for too long, not wanting to risk bringing that intangible 'something' she had sensed as being off into focus. That would be awkward and inappropriate. She also couldn't silently stand still for too long, because again, awkward. As such she flashed the bronzerider a quick salute before saying, "wingrider Lana of brown Rauskazeth, reporting in."

Was that too formal? It certainly felt uncomfortable to her. Then again, of course it would, she sucked at formal.

Fardles. She had no idea what she was doing.

Al’dai watched the new rider walk in, bracing himself. He assessed her in seconds— medium build, held herself well, blond hair pulled back and some noticeable scarring on her face— before trying to pull himself more upright, with mixed results.

She thrust him a salute, and he nodded, returning a casual one. “Well met, Lana. I trust you and Rauskazeth have been well? How have you been finding Vaioa?”

Introduct yourself. She’s nervous as a cornered wherry. I can smell it.

Quiet, you. For all intents and purposes you aren’t here. You’d best stay out on your ledge.

“My name is Al’dai, rider of bronze Lerouth. I’m the wingleader of Sandstone.” His mouth pulled into a humorless smile that was closer to a grimace. “Not that I’ve been doing much of that lately.”

Finding his balance, he edged around the table and offered his spare chair. “Please, have a seat.” Meanwhile he himself lowered his body into the chair closer to him, hoping that his knees would not give out; they did not. He smiled at that and looked back at Lana.

“I just wanted to meet you properly. You’ll be flying under J’zec and Rilatih for the time being; they have taken over Sandstone in my absence. Until I recover well enough to resume flying, that is.” He again managed a half-smile. “As I won’t have a chance to fly with you for some time, I was hoping to meet you on the ground instead, and welcome you to Vaioa. I may be grounded for the time being, but I do hope you’ll feel comfortable coming to me with any questions or concerns you have. I like Sandstone to run smoothly, and that means addressing issues before they become problems.”

'I just wanted to meet you properly.' Those words were accompanied by a burst of relief. So she hadn't managed to muck something up already. That was great. Spectacular, really. Maybe he didn't even know of her reputation yet! Oh, that would be amazing. Give her a chance to prove what she could do before the inevitable first of judgement fell upon her.

I told you, a smug voice said.

Hush, you great wherry.

Lana finally brought herself to smile as she took a seat. "We have been well, yes. Vaioa has been... charming. Nothing like High Reaches, but that's not necessarily a bad thing." It was warmer, for one. Warmth was always good. There was also a lack of familiar faces, which was even better. No Luca, no Novalyn, no whispers and expectations. Maybe she really could come to like it here.

She almost lifted one leg to cross over the other, only to remind herself that she was meant to be making a good impression. Proper. Proper, professional. No crossed arms or legs, no smirking, no joking or witty remarks. Professional. The curiosity niggling at her as to why Al'dai wasn't currently leading his wing? She could ignore that. "Of course. J'zec and Rilaith appear to be very competent. I do not doubt that Sandstone is a very capable Wing."

A moment of silence before the question she had been asking herself forced itself out in a burst of carelessness. "Why aren't you leading the Wing?" Feck! Feck, feck, feckity feck! This. This was why you shouldn't let yourself fall into the habit of saying what you wanted when you wanted to. Or be impulsive and not try your hardest to get rid of the trait. It would come back to bite you in the three seconds that saying something seemed alright. Lana's face paled slightly. "I mean, assuming that's an alright thing to ask." 'An alright thing to ask'. Goodbye, dreams of professionalism. She'll see you again in a few turns.

Al'dai's mouth quirked at her description. Charming? Well, the other Weyrs did often view Vaioa that way; though they had been around for quite some time, being the youngest Weyr (not to mention their rather progressive tendencies, even by Weyr standards) did tend to garner them a reputation for being idealistic but not serious. Oh, well. Hopefully she would come to see Vaioa as home. Al'dai did hate to see transfers who could not find their place, who transferred away again.

"I'm glad to hear that. J'zec is a good rider." Well suited to take over for me, someday, he though. He pushed it away before he could begin to wonder just how soon that someday would be.

Her fidgeting led to a brief outburst, and she couldn't hide the greedy curiosity on her face, though a moment later she turned contrite, abashed. Al'dai blinked in surprise at Lana's reactions.

She doesn't know?

What, you expect to be the center of attention throughout the entire Weyr? Quipped Lerouth.

No, he replied calmly, considering Lana. He didn't mind if there weren't rumors circulating about him, although... if he had to have guessed... he would have assumed that the story of his injury would have spread by now. Not to be arrogant, but... maybe it was arrogance. Al'dai felt a pang of guilt at the realization. It wasn't arrogance, but he couldn't help but assume that everybody was thinking about him and how insufficient he was. Just the way he felt.

Well, they aren't, Lerouth pointed out acidly. The Bronze did not at all care for the negative turns in thought that Al'dai had developed lately.

Al'dai managed a calm smile and nodded at Lana. "It's alright to ask. How could you have known? Before you transferred, I had a mishap with the bandits in the desert. Those bandits that have since been disposed to the Ring Islands." He steepled his fingers. "Lerouth was... unable to get to me in time to avoid an injury." Never mind the finer details about how they had been fighting, blocking each other out; how Lerouth had blocked him out in turn, how Al'dai had retreated to the desert, alone, to try and get away from the Bronze. How, really, Al'dai should have known better in the course of things being as they were. That was a sight too personal. "Truthfully, I'm lucky to be alive, and if it weren't for my then-wingsecond Bryn, who is now Wingleader in Marble Wing, I wouldn't have made it. As it is, my body is still healing, and is too weak to fly right now. I can't walk too well, although I am getting stronger." He managed a crooked smile, and it occurred to him that Lana might be uncomfortable with such an explanation, but then... she had asked, hadn't she? He shrugged. "Anyway, I've been recovering quite well, so I expect I'll be back to leadership in no time." I hope...

Her attention was focused on Al'dai's face, desperately trying to gauge him for any sorrt of significant reaction. Anger? Irritation? Not only were those the things she expected, but they were the ones she was the most accustomed to seeing in correlation to herself. But no, there was none of that. She let out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding when he confirmed that it was okay to ask. You don't need to act like you're walking on eggshells, her dragon remarked. A frown tapered at the corner of her lips. You don't know that. If she dropped her caution she may end up acting too... too... her. She had come to find that she wasn't someone a lot of people tended to like when she acted like herself. Once again, Rauskazeth wasn't entirely in agreement. I think you would be proven wrong if you let go of the past and were true to yourself.

The brownrider didn't respond. Being true to herself? Wasn't that what had gotten her into half her messes in the first place? Besides, her wingleader was starting to tell his story. She could debate her personal problems with her dragon another time. This was much more interesting.

Lana's eyes widened in surprise. Bandits? So that was one horror story about Vaioa that was confirmed to be true. But for him to get so badly injured, rescued by his Wingsecond in the knick of time... had he been alone? I wonder what he was doing out there, he mused. That is for him to know and share with who he wants to. This time she was in full agreement with her dragon. Impulsive as she was, even she knew that asking that question may be overstepping a line to a degree that she was able to hold herself back. Quite frankly, she was relieved that it looked like she hadn't already crossed the line.

When the Wingleader smiled, she forced herself to return one of her own. This really seem like a smiling matter, but she didn't want to risk appearing impolite. "It's a good thing Wingleader Bryn was there, then. I look forward to the day I can fly under you." Because he said that he would be back to leadership in no time. she wasn't going to question that. Out loud, anyway.

Lana responded in a polite, stilted manner. Al'dai felt his smile fade and exhaustion begin to creep in. Not only was he much more easily worn out since the incident, but he had become incredibly weary of social niceties as well. He found forced politeness grating. Before the incident, he would have said that such things were necessary, but now, he did not have time to waste dancing around conversation for the sake of politeness. It was possible to respect someone, and not hurt their feelings, without engaging in convoluted acts of verbal gymnastics.

He had surely signed Lana's transfer papers, weeks ago. But he didn't remember the details, and anyway, basing a person off of what their papers said never sat well with Al'dai. You could be so much more than that. So he discarded the non-memory he had, and managed another smile. He may as well get to know her from a fresh beginning, right here.

"So, Lana, what exactly brings you to Vaioa? Vaioa is... very different from High Reaches. Do you think you will like it here?" The weather was only the beginning. While the political climate at High Reaches was not as obstinate and conservative as Fort, it was certainly no progressive bastion.
