Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The day had been an absolute blur for Narramir, although lately that had become the case more often than not-- stressful shifts helping out in the infirmary on Threadfall days was the only thing that kept the desert days from blending into one another. The life of a candidate was not glamorous, but thankfully the weyr-bred boy had always found great comfort in routine and regularity.

The lanky boy currently sat in the dining hall, absent-mindedly picking at the remnants of this evening's meager meal. Rili sat atop his head, looking like a happy little green jewel nestled in his thick dark locks. He sighed, and picked up the tray of scraps to dispose of them before heading back to the barracks for tonight's free time. The little green flit chirped in complaint at the sudden movement, and scuttled her way to her boy's shoulder where she could get a better grip.

Life in the Weyr was nothing if not routine, as Narramir knew dearly. Today had been a Thread-less one, and logically the candidate knew he should be glad for that, but a part of him wished for at least a little excitement. He was sorely jealous of the adventure and thrills the Southern transfers were surely having-- if only he could be down there with them, chopping his way through rainforests and languishing on the beaches he'd heard so much buzz about in the lower caverns since the Souther Continent's discovery. So what if he had no idea what a beach or rainforest looked like? It must be amazing, it was all anyone was talking about, after all.

The walk back to the barracks seemed to take much longer than it should have. When he finally reached his room, Narramir entered and closed the door behind him. Rili flew from his shoulder to her customary perch on the headboard of the boy's bed, chittering happily. The tired candidate let out a breath of relief as he strode to his bed before collapsing onto the furs with a dramatic flair. He laid on his side with one arm resting under his head, staring blankly at the opposite wall of his room, relaxing into the comfort of his bed.

Until, that is, his sharp eyes spotted a jerky movement in the corner. The movement was familiar, and the normally confident boy was instantaneously filled with dread. Tunnelsnake.

"Ughhhh. Please don't be what I think you are!" He spoke to the creature in particular, but his alarm sent Rili into a fit-- she was crashing about the room making all sorts of noise-- Narramir was not sure if she was trying to help, or trying to flee. Well... looks like I'm going to get the excitement I wanted after all...

"Rili! Rili! Calm down! It's okay, it's o--whoooouuuuh no no no--" He spoke very sternly to the little green, but before he could finish the terrified tunnelsnake made a run for the now-closed door it surely came in through earlier.

Leaping up onto the desk chair in a panic, Narramir stood, stuck and irrationally afraid to confront the small beast. He was sure someone should have heard the commotion coming from his room, he sincerely hoped so-- he certainly could use saving at this point in time.

Viviette was back on the lower cavern chore list, and she was sick to her core of helping in the kitchens. Maybe it was because of her nimble fingers, but the head-cook seemed to greatly enjoy setting Viviette to deboning fish. It left Viviette with sore fingers from pricking herself on the aforementioned bones, and smelling of the sea for days afterwards. The only up side was that when surrounded by fish guts she was grateful for her short hair, imagine if the long wispy strands that escaped from her braid had dragged through that goop.... she shuddered at the thought.

When she arrived back at the barracks she leaned against a wall, sighing in relief. One more day done. No sign of another clutch, it was true, but every day had to bring one closer. Vaioa had so many queens, the fact that one hadn't risen since Cirseth made the candidate wonder if all the excitement over Southern had messed up their Flight cycles or something. Could that happen? She could ask one of the experienced dragon healers next time she was stalking their work.

It was from this position of weary unwinding that she heard a ruckus coming from one of the nearby rooms. She frowned in its direction. That was from the boys side, and so not actually any of her business, but if someone was in trouble...well, she'd been trying to be a little braver recently. The weyr healers faced situations she couldn't imagine, and they all acted like they knew exactly what to do at every moment. That was something she'd like to imitate until it was real, or until everyone else thought it was real.

When she reached the door of the room the noise was emitting from, she knocked, calling out, "Sorry to bother you, but are you...okay?" What the person inside could be doing to cause all the crashing about she had no idea, but hopefully they weren't hurt. "I'm coming in, if that's alright." She opened the door a sliver and peeked inside until she recognized the candidate in distress. "Narramir! I'm sorry, I didn't realize this was your room. You are....standing on a chair." Now confusion dominated her expression. "Um. Why are you standing on the chair?"

Narramir's face was as bright red as a garnet dragon, watching in horror as Viviette opened the door to... this mess. Rili continued to fly around the room like a madwoman with glee, and the boy reasoned that she had probably forgotten why she was panicking in the first place.

"Viviette! Oh Faranth, help me, this firelizard is useless! There's a tunnelsna---aaaah there it goes! Viv save yourself!" The sudden movement sent the lanky boy tumbling backwards off the chair in an extremely ungraceful manner. Rubbing his head with a pained groan, he came to his senses and scrambled back up onto his desk. This was a much more sturdy hiding place.

The terrified creature was growing more and more frightened by Narramir and his little flit's antics, and made a mad dash for the open door. Unfortunately for the two candidates, just before the little pest was able to make it's escape, Rili crashed into the door, closing it. The tunnelsnake hissed menacingly and it's many legs changed direction back towards Narramir's bed.

"Oh, shards, Rili-- you dimglow-- you're lucky you're so cute..." Chirping in agreement, the green hopped up onto her boy's shoulder, blissfully ignorant of the situation. Unsure of what steps to take to rid himself of this nightmare, he turned to his friend. "What... what do you think we should do? It looks pretty content under there... Urgh, why me?"

Viviette pushed further into the room when Narramir's response was full of alarmed exclamations and panic. The flit wasn't behaving any calmer, and she had to duck once when it came awfully close to her head. "A what? A tunnel-" She yelped as her fellow candidate fell over, lunging toward him in a failed attempt to lessen his fall, and the cause of the distress revealed itself. Viviette's foot was right in the tunnelsnake's way, and Viviette quickly hopped sideways onto one foot, trying to maneuver out of the way but mostly destabilizing herself. Thankfully between her movement and the green's clumsy antics it didn't attempt to savage her ankles or whatever else a mad snake might try. She waved her arms wildly to avoid the same fate as Narramir. This was not what she'd have guessed was ongoing when she'd first heard the noises.

"Are you okay?" With the critter away from them, her first concern was the boy's well being even if his thoughts remained on the problem. "How hard did you hit your head? You could have a concussion, or at the least we should get some ice for the bump." She looked up at him worriedly, any urge to laugh at his perch well suppressed by the possibility that he could be seriously injured.

His question gave her pause before she could do anything like climb up there with him to inspect his scalp though. Narramir was right, the tunnelsnake was still under the bed, and that was a problem... "It didn't look like one of the venomous ones, but I didn't get a great look at it either. If you give it some time it'll probably come out on its own." Then she remembered the fact that he was acting like a five turn old who was playing the 'the floor is thread' game. Waiting might not be a viable option. "We could try to lure it out with food?"

Although he could not gather the coherent thoughts to say it out loud, Narramir was extremely grateful for Viviette's sudden appearance. He wasn't so sure he and Rili could have gotten through this on their own. Kneeling on top of the desk to get a closer look-- but still from a safe distance-- the scared candidate furrowed his brows in a great frown.

"I always seem to get a headache when I'm around you!" Nervous, but genuine, laughter escaped the boy's mouth as he put a hand over the achey, growing bump on his head. He distinctly remembered Searching Viviette's face for a response, he quickly added, "I'm only joking, of course! I'm really glad you showed up... I'm perfectly fine, I'll just have a pretty big knot on my head for a while!"

Rili had since calmed herself considerably, and was now perched atop her boy's bed, craning her neck to look underneath. An angry hiss from the trapped tunnelsnake sent her reeling backwards with a surprised hiss of her own. She flew back to Narramir's shoulder with an indignant huff.

"Maybe food would work... good idea!" Taking a deep breath to steel himself, Narramir slid off the desk carefully and walked quickly towards the other candidate. Reaching into a small bag near the bed on a trunk, he pulled out a small piece of jerky. Taking careful aim, he tossed the scrap of dried meat towards his bed. Just hearing the tunnelsnake under there was making the poor boy's skin crawl. "So... now we wait. But what do we do with it once it comes out?"

As if on cue, the creature poked out it's head and went for the jerky. Rili screeched, flaring out her wings in an intimidating gesture-- to which the snake simply ignored, focusing all it's attention on the scrap of food.

"Eeeeyugh! There it is... What should we do? Oh Faranth, oh Faranth, oh Faranth..." Narramir shifted uncomfortably as he resisted the embarrassingly strong urge to climb back on top of his desk.

Viviette's concern was not lessened by Narramir's joke, out of place laughter was a symptom of a concussion, which she wasn't convinced the other candidate hadn't suffered from his fall. "Well at least we can get a compress for it when this is over..." She did wish the boy's flit would stop poking at the snake, small though it was the green was much more likely to get hurt then either of them. Hadn't the weyrling barracks been infested with tunnelsnakes a few months ago? Or that was before Southern so...quite a few months ago. What had they done then? She stared at their bait and tried to remember, with no luck. Maybe that was something she should ask about next time she had chores in the lower caverns.

"Oh! Or maybe we don't." The tunnelsnake emerged with almost no time passing to her surprise. "It must have been starving. I wonder if that's why it wandered in here." Sympathy at the creature's plight tugged at her heartstrings until she looked back to her companion, who was still shaking in his figurative boots. Okay, maybe now wasn't the time for that. But there had to be some way to get it out of here besides killing it.

"Maybe send her out to get a towel or something we could throw on it?" Viviette suggested, not inclined to try and pick it up with bare hands no matter how bad she felt for it. "That would...keep it from running back in the bed?" This was said with less confidence, it was fully speculative. For all she knew the towel would scare it. Still, it was better then hoping that it would run out the door on its own when it now had food and a place to hide. Er. Hmmm. That was probably everything it wanted, and she'd contributed to half of it. Maybe not her greatest idea. She mustered a grin at Narramir and hoped with all her might that things wouldn't go wrong.

Narramir gulped, steeling himself for what he was about to do. This was a last resort, he must be brave-- if not for himself... well, mostly for himself. The tunnelsnake was not of the venomous sort, it's bite would still be painful, but could more than likely be easily avoided. That didn't make the things any less creepy, he shuddered. He balled his hands into fists at his side, muscles tense, and shifted diagonally to be in between the tunnelsnake and the bed so as to deter it from scurrying away again.

"Rili, c'mon girl, I know this is exciting, but I need you to focus, darling--" Cupping the little green in his hands, Narramir cooed his instructions. Rili crooned back at him, not understanding a word of what he said. Tensions rising, the boy sent frantic mental images of a large, dark towel to his fire lizard in hopes that she could get the right item. "I need you to get a towel. A towel--"

The vividly colored flit leapt upwards and disappeared between before Narramir could finished his sentence. She may not be the brightest glow in the hall, but she was eager to please.

"Well... hopefully that will work in our favor." He turned again to Viviette, keeping a close eye on the ravenous tunnelsnake a few feet away. "Faranth knows what she'll come back with."

Barely a few minutes had passed before Rili made her reappearance. She popped into the room holding an object in her tiny claws, before dropping it neatly into her boy's hands. She perched upon his shoulder, awaiting praise for her good deed. It did not take long for the candidate boy to realize with dismay that Rili had not brought a towel back after all. Sitting in the palm of his hand was an ornate hair brush, likely stolen from some oblivious rider's weyr.

"Ahhh, shard it, Rili-- what am I supposed to do with this? Pretty up the tunnelsnake?" Rili gave an offended hiss and flew over to the desk to pout. Pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration, Narramir took a deep breath and looked pitifully at Viviette. "Okay, okay... um, what now?"

As if it heard his question, the tunnelsnake turned it's attention to the bag of jerky in Narramir's hand. It had finished the strips thrown haphazardly at it earlier, and craved more. After all, these loud, scary, obnoxious creatures couldn't be too bad if they had food to share. The tunnelsnake made the unfortunate mistake of taking advantage of the human's distracted-ness to run up the boy's legs to make a lunge at the bag of jerky.

Narramir let out the girliest scream he had ever heard leave his lungs. In a panicked, adrenaline-driven motion he kicked his leg, dislodging the tunnelsnake. It fell a very short distance to the floor with a soft 'thud', and hissed over it's shoulder at the offense. His head still in a panicky fog, Narramir threw the whole bag he held towards the door.

As far as Viviette could tell, the biggest threat to Narramir in this room wasn't the tunnelsnake, but himself. "I'm sure she's trying her best." She attempted to reassure the other candidate, while watching the tunnelsnake gulp down its jerky bait. During the silence she wondered what would have happened if she hadn't checked on him. Would he have stayed on top of furniture until someone noticed he was missing from lessons? That would have been kind of sad. The teen offered her friend a small smile. Given the mistakes she'd made while living at Vaioa, from lopping off her hair to crushing on her teacher, it was kind of soothing to see that other people were having their own personal troubles. Weirdly, it made her feel less alone.

Thinking of, she needed to buy R'ken something at the next gather. He'd helped her get at least bits of her confidence put back together, she ought to find a gift for him... While her mind jumped from subject to subject, Rili had returned, and she shook herself from her thoughts. Had the flit succeeded? The towel would make things simple, throw, pick up, throw out the door. Then it would be someone else's problem. She looked to what Narramir held, hoping for the best, and...nope. No such luck. And no time to puzzle why the flit thought a towel and a hair brush were the same thing. Narramir's comment about 'prettying up the tunnelsnake' was just the right amount of humor in a serious situation to make Viviette crack up laughing though. Hopefully Narramir realized she was laughing at the flit, at the fact that the whole situation was a little ridiculous, and not at him.

Especially when the tunnelsnake ran at him and he let out a scream so high pitched Viviette thought it might break glass.

"Shaffit, um, Narramir-" The girl was caught between opening the door wider and hoping the tunnelsnake would run out and making sure Narramir was okay. There was no time to weigh her options, so with a quick inhale and steeling of her fears she knocked the door open with one leg, and made a grab for the tunnelsnake itself. It was away from the bed now, with a large gap before it could reach a hiding space, and maybe, just maybe, she could grasp it where it couldn't bite her. If it stayed in here any longer though Narramir was going to end up knocking himself in the head so hard it left a permanent dent.

As if by magic, right as Narramir chucked the sack of jerky towards the door, Viviette kicked the door open. The tunnelsnake whipped it's head at the noise. Seeing it's prize, the creature quickly scurried out the door towards the tasty dried meat.

His head still fogged with panic, he did not waste a single second upon seeing his final chance to rid himself of this pest terrorizing them. He lunged towards the door and slammed it shut with his whole body weight. Sliding down to the floor with a heavy, world-weary sigh, he wrapped his arms around his knees. It was then his reverie was broken and he turned his attention back to Viviette. Sweet, sweet Viviette, he was so thankful for her in this moment. He was going to have to make this up to her somehow. Her stifled giggles became infectious, and he soon found himself breaking out into laughter.

"I am so, so sorry you had to witness that. Thank you so much for 'saving' me!" Rising to his feet and dusting off his pants, Narramir turned a sheepish look towards his fellow candidate. Embarrassment rushed over his face, and he brought a hand the the back of his burning neck. "I kind of freaked out a little back there."

Rili, upon realizing the ordeal was over, glided back to her boy's shoulder with an irritated cheep.

"Thanks to you too, girl-- you did your very best. Didn't you, my pretty little--" He abruptly ceased the baby-talk and kissy noises he was making to his adoring little green when he realized Viviette was regarding him with an odd expression.

"So... how can I make this up to you? I uh... hope we can leave the girly screams out of the story when we tell people..."

Viviette had never been so thankful as when the tunnelsnake ran for the exit on its own volition and her desperate grab for the critter ended with empty hands and a situation remarkably resolved. She could muttered a hundred thank you's to luck at that point, except that Narramir was already laughing along with her and it was an amazing moment of relief. All the seriousness and anxiety fled the room as the candidates both sat upon the floor and grinned.

"It's fine, everyone has something they're scared of." She reassured her fellow candidate, willing to forgive all ridiculous reactions in the fact of the hilarity of it all. Even the baby talk he kept using to address his green flit, and the flit's inability to tell the difference between basic objects. "Maybe you should teach her what a towel is though." The girl pointed out, snickering. Okay, so maybe she wasn't letting that one go quite yet. It was going to be a story they could tell for turns to come. Maybe they'd even end up in the same weyrling class! It would be nice to graduate from candidacy with people who she'd have stories with. She hoisted herself up beside him and looked up at the teen, noting for the first time that he wasn't bad looking either. At least, when he wasn't standing up on top of a desk yelling for help.

Then he brought up his shriek and she burst out laughing all over again. Once she'd coughed a little bit and gotten her breath back she waved her hand at him. "No, no, I think we can leave that out. Well, for some people. When you Impress I make no promises. I think your dragon should be completely prepared for when he or she has to rescue you themselves." Viviette teased, delighted to have something to tease a friend with.

"Tell you what, we'll call it even if you'll, um..." What could he do for her? He'd helped her before, so she didn't think he really 'owed' her anything, but he had asked... "You could stick with me during the next egg touching." She finally said, completely serious. "Last time I was so shy I didn't get to touch many eggs, and this time I'd really like to get a feel for them." The girl couldn't meet his eyes while putting forth her request. She didn't think Narramir was the type to laugh at people, but that didn't keep it from feeling childish.
