Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Mother of Whers
Keen blue eyes followed Hama as she poured the tea, taking note that the greenhandler added more to her own cup as well. They met Hama's gaze as Ara accepted the mug, her cheeks still pink from Arask's ridiculous comment and question. She murmured a "thank you," shivering as her fingers brushed Hama's. Cradling the warm mug to her chest, she waited to sit or take a sip until Hama got comfortable. She thought about pulling one of the chairs out for the smaller woman, and edged towards the nearest one, but it turned out that there was no need. Hama did not move to sit in that chair, or in any of the chairs, for that matter. No, she went to sit down on her bed, leaving Ara to stare at her with a slightly confused expression.

Does she want me to leave? Is she getting comfortable as a sign for us to leave? She would have liked to think that, after nearly three Turns of steadily growing closer to each other, Hama would have just told her to leave. Maybe she wants you to join her. That was a thought that barged its way through her hesitation. It was something that Arask would say, and she glanced his way, only to see that he was talking to Hama and Hamask. The blue was practically ignoring his Girl, in favor of complaining.

Take easy? Lots of relax? His head swiveled back and forth, looking between Hama and Hamask. He heaved a great, dramatic sigh and dropped his head, closing his whirling orange eyes. Arask and Girl relax easy enough. Useless. Should be with squad. Should be useful. Should do something.

Ara couldn't help but grin at him, sipping from her drink. She only spoke out loud for Hama and Hamask, seeing as Arask had no problem opening their conversations to the greenpair. "You sound like a whining hatchling, Arask."

Arask growled a warning, snuggling closer to Hamask. Says awkward Girl.

I'm not awkward. As warmth seeped into her from the tea, Ara summoned her courage just to prove her blue wrong. At least, that was what she would claim as her excuse. She cautiously approached the bed--Faranth, the last time she and Hama had shared that bed--and sat down on the very edge of the foot of the mattress. Her movements were timid, as was the shy smile she gave Hama. "Your bed's more comfortable than I remembered." She blurted it out without thinking, and her eyes widened as her brain caught up with her mouth. Quickly, she stammered, "I-I mean, not that I actively reminisce on that...night...I just m-meant... You know... Just an observation..."

Girl very awkward, Arask interrupted, and there was a raspy chuckle to his mind-voice. Funny. No love Arask awkward after three Turns. So awkward now with Hama after three Turns. Stupid Girl.

Ara couldn't even reply to that. She just quickly lifted her mug again, gulping down the hot liquid as she stared at the whers. She was practically the color of a blood wher.

Hama snorted into her cup. Curse the stubbornness of her patients! Human or wher, it didn't matter, for they all seemed intent on undoing all the good work that healers did for them. "If you want to be useful, Arask, then you will get your rest and you will let yourself heal properly, lest you hurt yourself further and become a burden to your squadmates!" She raised her eyebrows at Arask, her look expectant and leaving no room for disagreement. "You can go back to work when I say so, and no sooner. All right?"

Relaxing good thing. Healing good thing. Rest more, heal faster. Then work all you want. Hamask wriggled a little closer to Arask.

Hama may have had more to add, but Ara surprised her by seating herself delicately at the foot of her bed—a safe distance, Hama thought, though she wouldn't have minded something a little closer. She glanced at the whers nestled side by side; maybe they had the right idea. Then Ara's remark and stammering explanation earned a peal of laughter from the healer, and she reached over to swat the woman affectionately on the arm.

"Oh come on now, don't look so embarrassed." Her features settled into a smile. "There's nothing wrong with reminiscing over a nice night." Casually she sipped her tea. "The bed hasn't changed, though; maybe your memory is failing you."

Maybe you need a reminder, came the unbidden thought. She smiled to herself then, smiled for private thoughts she would not voice, private memories and whimsical desires she did not expect to be fulfilled. It was nice to be around Ara, but their encounter had been a few turns ago; if something were to happen beyond that, wouldn't it have happened by now?

Maybe not, she thought, thinking of Ara's stuttering and noting the color that had risen to her formerly pallid cheeks at the mere mention of their tryst. Maybe some things in life required a little… encouragement.

The heat under Ara's skin was due to far more than her warm drink. She was mortified, and Arask's amusement wasn't helping in the least. It would be easy to blame the lack of sleep for her indiscretion. In fact, that was exactly what she'd do. If Hama got upset or laughed at her, she would simply apologize with that excuse and leave. I don't want to leave. Honestly, as she sat on the bed, she wanted nothing more than to be held by her friend while Arask watched over them, alive and well. Which is ridiculous. Ara knew better. Hama probably would have held her, had she asked, but it wouldn't have been like that.

Girl think too much. Pity no smart thoughts. Arask, the great lump, showed no inclination of moving or leaving. He was quite comfortable where he was, which meant, unfortunately, Ara would be unable to move him.

Surely he'd leave if Hama asked. Faranth, the blue wasn't that stubborn, right? A light swat to the arm startled the bluehandler, and she felt her face grow even warmer. Hama was laughing. Which...stung more than she had expected, until she realized that the laughter wasn't cruel. Cracking a rather nervous smile, Ara shrugged, looking down at the mug in her hands. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said it, nonetheless." She thought that it was nice. That meant that Hama had enjoyed that Run, surely?

Was good Run, Arask grunted, more to Hamask and his Girl than to Hama. He was still a little annoyed at the healer for commanding him to rest.

"It was," Ara murmured, ducking her head again. Though her tongue and throat had surely been scalded by this point, she took another large sip of tea before she dared look over at the greenhandler. There was no mask; just an anxious vulnerability and maybe the slightest bit of hope. Wetting her lips, Ara forced herself to meet Hama's eyes. "My memory hasn't failed me." No, she remembered that night with crystalline clarity. Every detail, and as she thought about it, she once again looked away, guilty as her cheeks heated up for an entirely different reason.

"Do you want us to leave?"

Would say if she did, Arask pointed out, draping his tail over Hamask's. Relax.

Eh? Hamask lifted her head a little. She blinked in bleary confusion before it registered what they were talking about. A run. That's right. She had run a long time ago and chose Arask. Her memory of it was hazy, but she supposed it had been nice. Without further comment, she lowered her head and closed her eyes. Talking was nice too, but she was sleepy.

Hama met Ara's gaze steadily, and her lips twitched into a faint smile as something stirred in her chest: a subtle thrill or joy, or maybe just the quickening of her heart. Ara remembered. Hama continued watching the bluehandler, even as she looked away.

At Ara's question, her eyebrows rose. Her mouth opened, but nothing came out, and Arask beat her to a response. She laughed again, but it was quieter, one of confusion, full of questions.

"No. Arask is right. I would tell you if I wanted you to leave," Hama said. "Why would you think that?"

Maybe because Hamask is sleepy, her wher suggested. Maybe just being polite.

Sleep, Arask told Hamask, as gently as he was capable of being. Meaning, the words came out as a gruff command rather than a well-intentioned suggestion. His heart had been in the right place, though, and he nudged the green's head with his nose. When she lay her head down once more, he lay his own over her neck and closed the eye that wasn't watching his Girl and Hamask's. Told Girl, he murmured, and it was his own brand of encouragement. It emboldened Ara enough to look up, at least.

She'd been aware of Hama's eyes on her even when she'd been avoiding her gaze. It felt as if the healer was boring two holes into the side of her head. She could practically feel the burn. There was no sting this time when Hama laughed. Ara could detect the other woman's confusion; it was reassuring, in a way. Hama hadn't figured her out entirely, then. She doesn't have to. It was all too tempting, to lie and say that yes, she was simply trying to be polite. She and Arask had barged in uninvited, after all. Hamask looked sleepy, surely Hama was tired too. It would be rude to keep her awake.

No, Girl.

Or she could just let it all out. Admit that she was worried about making Hama uncomfortable, that she was afraid she would say something she'd later regret. That she was embarrassed for bringing up the Run, when it couldn't have meant much to the greenhandler. Hama had not shown interest, as far as Ara could tell, since that night. It would only drive a wedge between them if Ara admitted that she'd fallen. "I..." Normally so poised and silver-tongued, Ara was at her wits' end. She floundered, her mouth closing, then opening again. Closing again. She could not lie to Hama. But she could not find the words to explain herself either.

Girl drown. Bad. Ridiculous, Arask observed unhelpfully. Ara couldn't even glare at him. She could only look at Hama and hope that the other woman would somehow be able to read her mind and spare her this awkwardness. That was impossible, though.

She glanced down at Hama's lips, unable to help it, and swallowed nervously. That would be too much of a risk. Not worth jeopardizing their friendship. But...there was always the possibility that Hama wouldn't...mind. Some risks were good... She had risked her life to save Arask... Arask had risked his life to save her. Arask had chased Hamask. She'd followed Hama. Yes, some risks could change everything.

Just do.

She would blame sleep deprivation. Shells, she'd blame Arask, if she had to, for what she did next. Ara--quiet, aloof, shy Ara--surged forward, cupped Hama's cheek, and pressed their lips together.

Arask sleep now? It was about bloody time. Arask had been stretched to his limits, dealing with his Girl's indecision.

Arask's brusqueness had little effect on Hamask, who merely heard the word and not the tone. Arask had released her of the obligation to stay awake (as Hama preferred her to for guests), and so she curled up a little tighter and sighed a long, deep sigh. Arask's head across her back was a comforting weight, like wrapping up in a blanket despite no need for warmth: a feeling of security that she had never missed but also rarely had.

Some of her contentedness was rubbing off on Hama; for though she still was full of questions for Ara, she felt calm more than anything as she examined the other woman. Confused, yes, but calm. Ara seemed at a loss for words at the moment, but Hama did not feel impatience. She waited.

At length Ara met her eyes, the bluehandler's jaw working though no sound came from her open mouth. Watching her, Hama saw her eyes flick downward—just slightly, and Ara was still looking at her. The thrill returned fluttering in her chest. Hama waited now, purposefully restraining herself, curious to hear if Ara would reveal what was on her mind, or to see what she would do.

Then the woman leaned forward, and a hand cupped her cheek, guiding her lips to Ara's: a kiss Hama met gladly, a triumphant joy welling in her rapidly beating heart. Still, it was a cautious kiss, if only because Ara was not sitting very close and Hama still held a cup of hot tea in her hands. She withdrew a little, smiling.

And now it was she who was at a loss for words, as every playful quip evaded her mind. For the moment, Ara had kissed the smartass out of her. She giggled, blushing, trying to grapple with her surprise that Ara had actually made a move—when minutes before, Hama had resigned herself to thinking the bluehandler never would.

"Well," she said at last, "that was nice."

Cries of fool! and stupid! and deadglow! resounded in Ara's head, only to be silenced by a shocking amount of confidence. Most of it came from Arask, who was now humming contentedly despite the ache it caused in his throat. Some of it, though, was fueled by sudden adrenaline. Blood pulsed in Ara's ears, hammering with each quick thud of her heart. Hama was not pulling away. She wasn't slapping her, or laughing, or anything. It felt like she was even kissing her back, but what did Ara know? It had been quite some time since she'd kissed anyone. That dawning realization had her hesitating. What if she was no good?

Hama drew away, and Ara copied the movement, albeit more jerkily. She kept her eyes squeezed tightly shut for as long as she thought she could get away with--a fraction of a second--before opening them. Once more, she could not look the other woman in the eye, though she did not move from her awkward position either. Her hand remained on Hama's cheek; she had forgotten that it was even there. Her gaze remained on the greenhandler's lips, but even so, it took a moment for her to comprehend that the woman was actually smiling.

The giggle that came from the greenhandler was music if Ara had ever heard such a thing. The second officer's eyes flickered up just a moment, and she found herself flushing pink. An apology was on the tip of her tongue. Hama did not look angry or upset. Quite the opposite, really, but Ara dared not hope... Not until Hama spoke.

"It...was?" The shock in her voice sounded insulting, and Ara shook her head quickly. Hama couldn't get the wrong idea. Her fingers curled, molding themselves to the shape of Hama's cheek. "I didn't mean that badly. I...it was very nice. And I-I'm not just saying that...I just...you..." With a frustrated sigh, Ara stared helplessly at the object of her very surprising affections.

For a brief moment, there was a bitter twinge in Hama's chest when she heard the disbelief in Ara's voice, and she feared for a moment that although the bluehandler had instigated the kiss, she had not enjoyed it. Her smile faltered. But then the hand still against her cheek pressed harder, Ara fumbled to explain herself, and presently Hama relaxed, understanding. She giggled again, this time at Ara, at her antics, at how cute she was when she got flustered.

"Yes, it was," she said, bringing up a hand to claim the one against her cheek. She squeezed it reassuringly, and did not let go.

Hama was silent for a moment. Truthfully, she still did not know what to say. Not that it had been anything she pursued to begin with, but she had given up on Ara, chalked their encounter off to a mere fling fueled by a wher run. Certainly Ara had become her friend afterward, but Hama hadn't seen signs that the other woman desired more.

But that kiss was influenced by no wher run. It was brief and sweet and genuine, and Hama had felt real affection there.

Oh, Hama, what a fool you are, she thought. If she had wanted something more back then, she shouldn't have been so passive about it.

"Now, why didn't we do that again sooner?" she said, laughing.

The falter in Hama's smile, brief as it was, sent a spike through Ara's chest. She felt bad for causing it, though the giggle helped soothe any guilt. The bluehandler gazed at the other woman with open wonder, clearly still stunned by the turn of events. Wow. Hama had enjoyed the kiss. Hama was holding her hand. Keeping it in place on her cheek. Wow.

Said twice. Arask's voice startled her, and her eyes flickered to him. He appeared to be sleeping, for all intents and purposes. She knew better. He was paying attention as always. Not that she minded.

Returning her gaze to Hama, she found the courage to look the greenhandler in the eyes. Brown is a warm color. The thought came unbidden, and Ara blushed even darker. At least she hadn't said that out loud. Absentmindedly rubbing Hama's cheek with her thumb, she wondered what the other woman was thinking. A silence had passed over the room again. It was slightly less anxiety-inducing this time, though. And when Hama laughed out loud, Ara couldn't help but chuckle with her.

Finding her voice, she shrugged a shoulder. "I... I didn't think you wanted...that," she admitted softly, looking down at her lap for a moment. "I figured it was just the Run. That was what it was for me....at first." And then they had become friends. And then she had fallen for the healer. Hard. Biting her lip, she glanced up once more. "Do you think....you'd like to do it again?" Her heart jumped in her chest, as if it was shocked by her own boldness.

"Oh," was all Hama said, a thoughtful look supplanting her smile as her gaze turned momentarily inward. How ironic, that Ara had thought the same thing she had, had had the same reservations, and that neither one of them had pursued what they both apparently wanted. Now more than ever, Hama realized she could not consider herself blameless, and that brought the smile back, even before Ara's question.

Her eyebrows rose. "It? You mean... hmm?" The healer made a delicate, meaningful noise in her throat. Hama supposed that was what Ara meant, since they had been referring to the night of the run, but the offer caught her off guard, and she heard herself asking, stupidly, "What, you mean tonight?"

She cleared her throat, then, a flush creeping into her cheeks, and hastened to explain before Ara could get the wrong idea.

"Well, I'm not unwilling, you see—I mean, I certainly would like to do it again! But... tonight? I mean—you look—well, you look tired. You've had a rough night. Hmm, but then, I guess it would take your mind off things, and... ah... erm." By this time, her face had gone a particularly bright shade of scarlet, and she justified the trailing end of her rambling by taking a sip of her tea.

Faranth, a detached part of her mind thought in mild horror, where had that come from? Hama rarely felt so awkward.
