Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Alara frowned down at how little space his belongings took up in the chest that had been assigned to him. Considering the mess he'd seen in the other bunks, he had a feeling that at least some of his new fellows had a lot more than he did. Well, that was nothing unusual. When you were an orphan son of a drudge, you didn't exactly acquire a lot of things. But he was at the Weyr now, and that meant he could start over. Be someone new. Acquire all those things he'd been denied before. He smiled tightly and closed the lid of the chest with a definite thump.

He ran his hands through his hair before redoing his ponytail. He took one last look at the bunk that was apparently his new home and lifted his chin slightly before turning sharply and heading out towards the common room. It was time to make a first impression on the people he was apparently now lumped with. Hopefully at least some of them would be interested. And if not, well that wouldn't be much different than the Hold had been. He'd just have to deal until he could manage to Impress a dragon.

He didn't quite burst through the door, but he did thrust it open and paused just long enough to make a noticeable entrance. "Afternoon everyone. I'm Alaran and just arrived. So who wants to give me the real talk about this place?" He pulled out a chair and sat on it backwards, crossing his arms over the back and leaning his chin on his arms. "Please tell me this place isn't as boring as the whole official talk makes it out to be."

Narion had only been here two days so far, but he had to say he enjoyed it. Vaioa was a far cry from Fort and most people here seemed much friendlier and more relaxed. With no lesson and no chores to do at the moment, he found himself relaxing in the common room. He didn't know anyone well enough yet to spend time with them so figured he'd spend it here and continue to meet the others. Maelle and Ingri seemed to agree with his decision, the two greens curled up together in his lap.

He had contemplated puling out his pad to doodle on when one of the other new male candidates practically burst through the door. Narion frowned slightly, eyeing the younger male. They were about the same height but he was much bulkier. Narion felt like this other guy could blow away in the wind. He also wasn't sure he liked the other candidate's tone. Deciding it may be in his best interest to try and get along, he pasted a non-committal smile on his face.

"Hello, Alaran. It's nice to meet you. I'm Narion, I arrived here two days ago myself so I don't know much. I did spend time as a candidate in Fort, though, and so far I can say I like it here a lot better even if it is warmer."

He hoped that would be enough for the other male. Narion knew he had a nasty temper and while he didn't enjoy violence that wasn't to say his two greens shared his views. If he was angry they always seemed quick to try and attack whatever it was that was upsetting him. Hopefully one of the other candidates here would pipe up and distract Alaran because Narion could see himself easily growing angry if this was how Alaran always acted.

Narramir had been spending his free time this particular afternoon sitting in the common room in the Candidate Barracks attempting to teach Rili a few simple tricks. "Simple" tricks such as fetching an object and bringing it to him, or perhaps even coming when called, however, were not so simple for the vividly hued green. She had no lack of enthusiasm, however, as she happily danced around Narramir begging for treats.

The sudden entrance of a candidate Narramir did not recognize was a welcome relief from the task of trying to training Rili, and the lanky teen was only slightly taken aback by the brusqueness of the other boy's tone. Ignoring it, he greeted Alaran with a wave. Waiting until the man he recognized (barely!) as Narion had finished speaking, Narramir took the opportunity to introduce himself.

"Hello! Welcome to Vaioa!" His expression was one not unlike a canine-puppy greeting a new friend, and it would certainly be hard to respond negatively to the boy's genuineness. "I'm Narramir. I don't think it's boring here, although-- I wouldn't really know. I've lived here my whole life. Everyone's really nice, though, and there's always lots of exciting things happening!"

Rili stretched her wings and chirped excitedly as if in agreement. Scooping her up from the bench they had been sitting on and depositing her on his shoulder, Narramir awaited Alaran's response.

"I am all in favor of exciting things happening" Alaran said with a smile that was at least a close relative to a smirk. "I am sure it'll be far more interesting than the Hold was". Part of him wanted to pepper both other Candidates with questions about where they'd grown up, but that would likely lead to them asking him similar questions and he wasn't sure that was information he really wanted to discuss with people he'd just met.

He eyed the various firelizards with mild interest. The creatures weren't exactly rare at the Hold, but the price of their eggs was far higher than he'd had hope of ever affording. Not if he still wanted to eat. And he was a fan of eating. "Where'dja get your 'lizards?" he asked, unconsciously mimicking Narion's non-committal tone. In actuality he was very interested in the answer. If firelizards were something most people had here, he would have to find a way to get one for himself. He had every intention of distinguishing himself here, but he wanted it to be for his intelligence or daring, not because he lacked something everyone, or almost everyone had.

Yoshan sat crosslegged on the floor, playing with Harper and Booger. Booger was walking on his legs, from one knee, down to the dip where the ankles crossed and back up to the other knee. Harper was lolling around on the floor in front of them, feet in the air, actually quiet for once. He was watching the other candidates, and trying to get up the nerve to socialize. Another candidate was playing with a flit too, a green, trying to get her to fetch things. He was just moving to get up to talk to him, when a new boy came in, introducing himself boldly.

Yoshan settled back down, unwilling to get up now that the newcomer was declaring his boredom with the world. The boy was tall, but thin. Something about his manner put Yoshan in mind of some of the Hold bullies. Some of the others spoke up, and it wasn't like Yoshan could give any information about the Weyr, he was so new to candidacy himself.

"Where'dja get your 'lizards?"

Was Alaran looking at him? Yoshan glanced around the room, and finally decided to take a risk. "I got mine out in the desert, about a couple hours walk out from the Hold. It was a green's nest, and only these two didn't get eat up by tunnelsnakes." He watched Alaran, trying to guess what kind of person this was.

When asked about his fire lizard, Narramir beamed. Rili trilled cheerfully, not understanding the situation fully but sharing in her boy's excitement. It was hard not to be excited when attention was being paid to her, after all. The lanky boy held up his arm as the little green crawled down his shoulder to cling to his forearm.

"Actually, I was just in the right place at the right time! A lady's gold flit laid eggs near the dining hall hearth-- I was just eatin', then everybody started talking about eggs hatching, and soon enough this one was nipping at my fingers!" His tone was overtly proud as he punctuated the end of his little story by making kissy noises at his green. "I'm sure there will be more eggs, there's tons of fire lizards around the Weyr!"

Sidling away for a moment towards another one of the more recent arrivals to the Candidate Barracks, Narramir approached Yoshan gently. The boy seemed like a fragile person, and the last thing the dark-haired teen wanted was to startle him.

"Say, um... Yoshan, right? Yoshan, you seem to have a real good handle on your fire lizards... Do you think you could help me train Rili? She tries really hard, but, she struggles." Narramir laughed to lessen the seriousness of his request, raising a hand to the back of his neck sheepishly.

Yoshan looked up at Narramir, but glanced over at Alaren before responding. Maybe it was wrong to judge someone without knowing, but in his experience, Alaran was someone to be wary of. He didn't want to hijack the older boy's agenda and get on his bad side so soon after meeting him. Narramir seemed nicer. Yoshan smoothed his hair in a decidedly feminine manner, apparently without realizing he did it. He returned his gaze to Narramir.

"Harper," Yoshan pointed at the blue who was chirping quietly as he waved his feet in the air, "is pretty good. He doesn't fetch very good yet, but he scouts for me when I explore, and he's taken messages to my family. I haven't tried to send to anybody else yet." Yoshan's eyes flashed briefly to Alaran, then back to Narramir. "This one," Yoshan poked the green, who promptly fell over and began waving HER feet in the air, "plays dead, and thats it. I can't get her to do anything else." Booger waited a bit, then righted herself and climbed up Yoshan's leg, onto his chest, and all the way up to his shoulder, looking pleased with herself. "I think she's a couple eggs shy of a hatching... She hangs on me all the time, that's why I call her Booger." Yoshan shrugged with a shy smile.

Narion cut his eyes over as another of the candidates introduced themselves. It looked like he had a green firelizard as well, as did another quiet lad. The firelizards did seem to be a bit common here, but he believed that was the case with most weyrs. Riders would have an easy time of acquiring nests after all.

Narramir seemed like a nice fellow and if he's lived here his whole life maybe he should get to know the other male. It'd be nice to learn about his new home, though he supposed he could just go to his aunt if he ever needed anything. He'd prefer it, though, if he could rely on his fellow candidates rather than his dragon-riding aunt.

He snapped back to attention as Alaran spoke up. Exciting things? "The only thing I know of exciting right now is just the gossip you hear about the South. All the wherhandlers and riders seem to be down there doing things. I think there's a weyrhold being established down there," he offered with a shrug. "But that's all I've gathered after two days of being here, so I can't say much else."

Arching his eyebrows at the other candidate's tone, recognizing what he was doing, he smiled slightly and focused on on the quiet candidate, Yoshan. "You got yours in the desert? Lucky find," he said with a grin. "Good on you to save them though." Narion thought it was interesting that the weyr seemed to just give them away, but that just touched on his earlier thought about them being so common in weyrs.

"I got mine from my mom, she bought me two eggs and they hatched into my two greens here, Maelle and Ingri. From what I know firelizards are very common here and they let anyone into any hatchings that happen. Seems you could honestly get as many as you want if you can get them to Impress you."

Alaran gave a snort of surprise. "You mean they just give them out to whomever here?" he said, tone thick with incredulity. Not that he didn't believe that what the other boys were telling him was true, but he really couldn't wrap his mind around the idea that anyone at the Weyr or not would be willing to just give away something as valuable as a firelizard. Then again, the firelizards he'd encountered at the Hold weren't just the pets that a lot of these seemed to be. At the Hold they were work animals, just as much as the canines and felines that hunted tunnlesnakes and other pests. But the Weyr didn't really need as many work animals he supposed. Especially not message senders, which is what firelizards had been most useful for. Still, he felt a sudden twinge of jealousy that all these boys had so easily lucked into having something he'd always assumed he'd never be able to afford. It just didn't seem fair.

He had to smother a laugh at that. He knew better than most that life was rarely fair. The only way for someone like him to make it even close to fair was to be smart and be willing to work harder than anyone else for everything.

But he wasn't blind to how Yoshan kept glancing at him, as if the younger boy thought he was going to suddenly bite or something. Which he had no intention of doing, so instead he flashed the other Candidate what he hoped would be interpreted as a reassuring smile and said "That's pretty cool that you found them all on your own. I never had the time to go hunting nests, green or otherwise."

Harper, recognizing that people were talking about him, flipped over onto his feet. He strutted a few steps out toward the other boys, warbling. He fluttered his wings a bit, preening, and looked up at Alaran.

Yoshan looked up at Alaran too, struggling to hide his surprise. The older boy's demeanor was deceiving, maybe. Or maybe people at the Weyr were just naturally nicer than people at the Hold. That didn't seem too likely to Yoshan's mind, though. Always possible that he was just behaving himself in front of witnesses, too. Oh, well. regardless of the cause, Yoshan tried to relax and feel safe.

"I didn't go looking for them, exactly. I was just looking to get away from ... the Hold." The hold bullies, actually, but he wasn't going to say that here. "I found a pile of rocks with a little hollow place inside. That's where I found the nest." Yoshan looked down at Booger, remembering. "The luck was in the timing, more than anything, I think. I waited hours before they hatched. I wasn't about to leave no matter how long it took." He shook his head, a half smile on his face. "I should have been with the herdbeasts, I got in huge trouble. But it was worth it." He grinned at the assembled candidates, "I was not supposed to come here, either, so apparently running off is good luck for me." Yoshan looked over at Narion. "What gossip about the South? What's happening there?"
