Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

While at the main weyr autumn brought a hint of chill, and those who traveled to the more Northern regions felt frost's bite and admired the luscious reds and oranges, Southern kept a constant temperature best labelled 'hot'. This meant work went unimpeded by potential cold, and even increased as some riders volunteered in order to escape the coming winter. Today, however, candidates had been allowed to enlist and were shuttled in on dragon back. They had been doing the majority of the heavy lifting to give the Southern residents a rest day, digging foundations and laying out stone bases. Now it was late evening, and muscles in Zahrai's back and legs were aching that she hadn't even known existed.

"Anyone have any numbweed? Or anything to help with these sores?" The candidate settled into the ring of workers with a groan and slow, careful movements. "I think those little bugs, the striped things, must have bitten me a dozen times over." She'd agreed to go to get out of her regular chores, without an awareness of how much sweat and grime Southern would involve. Regret at her decision due to the discomfort and a strange satisfaction when she looked over what they'd done warred in her head. The group had made a decent dent in their 'to do' list for the few days they'd be there.

One of the other girls handed her a jar of something, Zahrai thought her name was Vi-something. "Thanks." The cream offered much needed relief, and she exhaled gratefully at the sudden lack of itchy sensation. "Sooo much better. Anyone else need-" As the question was leaving her mouth the last word was drowned out by a wailing sound from the edge of their firelight, where cove and jungle met. It was long and low-pitched, accompanied by a strong gust of wind with all the wild scents of the untamed land. Visions of long-toothed, savage creatures flashed in the red-head's mind.

"Faranth's shell, what was that!" Zahrai yelled from her spot suddenly on the ground, she'd fallen backwards off the log they were using as a bench. Goosebumps prickled her arms, and she stared in horror in the direction the sound had come from. There was only darkness and silence. Even the bugs had ceased their chirping at the noise.

She glanced around at her fellows, alarmed. The girl who'd handed her the salve was similarly stunned, her eyes wide and fearful. "Do we....do we go see what that was...?" The question was hesitant, but serious. They'd been told of the dangers, but Zahrai had also heard the rumors of great treasures found in Southern's depths. Could ancient machinery like someone had found in a cave make that sound? Or what if that was an injured wher pair? She'd seen some of them headed out when dusk fell. What did they do now?

(OOC: Any candidate is welcome to join, while the atmosphere is meant to be spooky nothing bad will actually happen. But, you know, if they want to talk it up to try and scare each other ;))

When the chance for the candidates to travel south for a few days to work at the Southern camp arose, Narramir had been one of the first to eagerly volunteer his services. A strapping young lad such as himself could be a big help to the southern residents, after all! Now, however, after a real day's work hauling loads and basically being glorified slave labor for his superiors-- he found himself almost regretting the decision to go. But it would be worth it, he mused, as this was definitely an experience he did not want to miss out on. The Southern venture was all the Weyr folks could talk about since the continent's discovery, and he'd be lying if he said he was not envious of those explorers who got to go.

Nightfall and the end of the work day brought a brand new sense of relief to Narramir, who sat down with a small grunt and tore into his night's rations. Before he could savor it, the food was eaten, and the lanky boy sighed wearily. His shoulders ached the worst of all, as he had done a lot of heavy lifting and "grunt work" in a show of bravado to the other candidate girls in attendance. He was sure it had annoyed a couple of them, but he had meant no harm and was just trying to help out in the best way he could.

His aching shoulders were brought back to his attention swiftly as Rili appeared from between to perch on Narramir. The boy winced, but raised one sore arm to scratch her little green chin as she crooned with delight. She projected a manic array of happy, content images to her boy in rapid succession, and it almost sent him reeling. The little green was enjoying the vacation much more than her companion-- she had endless hunting, wild firelizards to cavort with, and best of all, she didn't have to do any work! Content and with a full belly, she wrapped herself around Narramir's neck like a scarf, and he smiled as he felt her muscles relax into him.

His attention was again caught when Zahrai, a candidate he was familiar with through lessons and work, complained of uncomfortable itchy bites. Glancing down at his arm, he grimaced at the laceration he had received from falling on a stray sharp rock like a dimglow. It had stopped bleeding ages ago, but it still stung and the edges looked a bit red and swollen.

"Hey, you I could use some of that numbweed if you are finished--" his sentence was cut off by a strange, unidentifiable sound from the jungle. He jumped with a start, eyes widening, and shifted closer to the fire. Looking around at his fellow candidates, he noticed quite a few similarly startled expressions, some people had fallen off their seats. "Whoa. That was... something. Anybody have any idea what that could have been?"

Standing up, he grabbed a shirt to cover his bare chest, and turned towards the source of the noise. It never really occurred to him that it could be some dangerous, unheard-of beast of the night that could tear men to shreds. And it wasn't like they had any whers or dragons to protect them-- Rili certainly wouldn't be any use against some southern predator.

"What if it's someone who's injured? I mean, surely there's some whers out there on patrol, but... what if it's the wher that's hurt?!" Swallowing hard and steeling himself, he balled his fists before looking at Zahrai and then to the rest of the group. "So... we should probably figure out what that was. I'll go... who wants to come with?"

Kamene was not certain what had possessed her to volunteer to come on the venture to help out in the South for a couple of days. Fair skin burnt in the sun, and while she was not the most attractive to the biting bugs, she had her share of itchy welts. As she ate her rations and looked around the group, she managed not to sigh. She should socialize. She knew that, but she was tired and wanted nothing more than to retreat and spin.

Kamene was not the strongest young woman, though she insisted on holding her own. She had not backed down on during work or shied away from anything, even if she would have to slather lotion over her skin to allow her to spin without her skin being too rough and blistered to do so without picking at the fiber. She also knew her limits and did not do anything that would have landed her in the med tent. That did not mean she was not sore and exhausted.

In fact she was too tired to even be aware of more than the most basic of social interaction going on. If any of the other Candidates tried to flirt with anyone else or show off or posture, Kamene was completely past being aware of it. She vaguely remembered having noted it earlier, but by now she was beyond caring or noticing.

At least she thought so, as she stared into the fire, until the wailing started. She had jumped a bit, easily startled and turned to look in the direction of the sound. "If we go, we stay in a group. No wondering off. We probably need at least one person on Infirmary rotation in case we need to do first aid..."

Several months had passed since Jir had been recruited to Candidacy, and while he’d enjoyed much of his time at the Weyr, these last few days had been the best by far.

The sheer novelty of the Southern continent had thrilled and intimidated him, at first; while he’d done quite a bit of traveling in recent years, he’d never ventured outside of Vaioan territory. The jungle, the humidity, the ocean – he’d never experienced anything like it before. He’d visited coastal Holds, most notably Tazan, but he hadn’t stayed for very long, and the beaches here put those northern ones to shame.

Better than the water and the sunshine, though, was the work they’d spent their days doing. He was exhausted, and he felt fantastic. Grounds chores back at the Weyr at least kept him outside, for the most part, but the group exercises in the morning just weren’t a substitute for working with your hands. His legs were like jelly, his arms and shoulders sore, and he felt for the first time in ages as though he’d done something truly productive. Not that the lessons weren’t interesting, or a good use of his time – on the contrary, they were probably his favorite part of any given day back at Vaioa – but no one had really benefitted when he’d spent an afternoon watching his peers jump of the backs of dragons. Here in the South, in just a few days, they'd managed to make quite a bit of progress laying out stones for the weyrhold's foundation.

His limbs were covered in bruises and scrapes, but for a boy who’d spent his childhood hunting and hiking through the hills, the trip down south had made for a welcome break from classes, not to mention the more regimented Candidates’ lifestyle.

Of course, there was nothing to be done once the sun set – Vaioa could be lit with glowbaskets, but the dark here fell thick and impenetrable. Base camp, despite the number of riders and handlers that occupied it, was a fairly haphazard thing, consisting mostly of tents. There was little to do but sleep, after a certain point, but for all that his body was worn out, his mind was wide awake. And so, after scarfing down a quick meal, he’d joined his classmates around a small fire.

Spying Narramir among the group, he’d nabbed a spot in the circle close by, and settled a sleepy Chani in his lap. He’d been quiet, for the most part, while the others ate and chatted among themselves; leaning back, he’d gazed at the stars and dug his feet into the sand, grateful the day's heat was finally beginning to fade. He was surprised as anyone, when a shriek cut through the night.

Straightening up, he scooped up Chani immediately, cradling her to his chest; though not quite as alarmed as he was, the little green seemed perfectly content to tuck herself into his shirt collar, curling up against his collarbone.
Faranth’s shell, what was that!
Glancing over at Zahrai, he shrugged helplessly.
“Down here? Could be anything…” Hopefully it was just one of the south’s large and colorful wherries, but really, all things considered, it could just as easily be something the transfers had yet to encounter. Something potentially very nasty.
I’ll go… who wants to come with?
Blinking up at Narramir in dismay – of course he was offering to investigate – Aeljir bit back a sigh, and struggled to his feet. This was probably a task best left to the riders and wherhandlers, but it had sounded so near - if it was someone, or something, that had been injured, they were the closest group to hand. And he could hardly let the younger boy go off on his own. At the very least, he had a knife tucked into his belt.
“I will.” He hoped he didn’t sound as unenthusiastic as he felt. Glancing around at the other Candidates, he added:
“Who’s staying? Would anyone mind keeping an eye on her, for me?” He’d drawn Chani out from underneath his collar, and held her out for the others to see. While fully grown, she was still a tiny, scarcely the length of his forearm. He didn’t want her anywhere the mysterious, shrieking thing, whether it turned out to be friendly or not.

Viviette gave Narramir a look of shock that morphed into something like admiration, he was doing something she'd never volunteer to do, walking into the wilderness in an effort to save whoever or whatever might be out there. In her mind the chance was too great that it was, in fact, a 'what' and not a 'who'. Kamene establishing that they needed to stay in a group sat better with her, a group would be in less danger... it was mostly lone individuals who disappeared into the darkness. A whole pack of candidates might be okay. Might. She stared at her feet, wishing for a way out of this sudden adventure that might not mark her as a complete coward.

Aeljir gave her that way out. "I can stay and keep watch!" She hastily interjected. "I'll keep her for you. And..and... I could send her to warn you if someone comes to check on us or something. That way you could come back. I know first aid pretty well too." While being here by herself wasn't necessarily much safer, the firelight and nearness of what came close to civilization in the south reassured her.

Zahrai, meanwhile, was weighing her options. Three people, four if she went, that was a fair number. They did have belt knives to use too. What about light? She pondered the feasibility of carrying once of the tall torches lit at the boundaries of what was considered the human-safe space. That would be difficult to tote about in the trees. "Could one of you chop a torch or two in half? Or something?" She said, standing and looking around at the assembled bunch. Despite her worries if there was something valuable out there, she wasn't going to miss it. "If we're doing this there's no way we're going without light."

As if something in the night sensed the group's intent to waltz into its depths the sound came again, quieter this time but obviously from the same source, whatever that source was. Zahrai tensed, steeling herself for whatever they'd meet. "I'm with her in this." She pointed to Kamene. "We go, we stick together, and I sure as fardle do not volunteer to be the person in the back." The aches of the day had faded in the wake of adrenaline, a fear-induced second wind.

Taking the first steps toward the treeline she really examined the direction they were heading. It was towards one of the cliffsides that hadn't been cleared yet, a looming barrier that would quickly cut off what moonlight filtered through the trees as they walked towards it. The sounds of the night had resumed, a chorus of peeps, chirps, and the occasional screech that might have been evidence of a predator making itself known to its prey. Zahrai would have sworn she saw small dots of reflective light in the branches, eyes watching the approaching group. She slid her belt knife into its holder, and with some effort broke a torch to a manageable size. Someone might notice in the morning, but the reprimand would be worth the resource. "Okay. Let's go."

Zahrai really hoped she wouldn't regret this.

When Zahrai headed towards the torches, Narramir nodded and took action immediately. He helped split one of the larger torches into smaller, hand-held sizes a few of them could carry. Lighting his own in the shared fire, he looked around at the rag-tag exploration party they had put together. Torch in one hand, belt knife in the other, he looked towards the source of the sound.

"Okay. Definitely stick together. Rili, you stay here with them-- would you mind watching her as well? She would probably get in the way... but in a cute way!" He pointed towards Viviette and Chani, and Rili skittered over and cuddled up next to the smaller green in Viviette's lap with a happy croon.

Narramir took a few steps towards the encroaching darkness before stopping and looking back over his shoulder towards his fellow candidates. Raising his torch to illuminate the immediate path, he continued on.

"Alright ladies and gents, let's do this!" He swallowed hard as he took careful step after careful step, occasionally looking back to make sure he had not been abandoned. "I don't mind leading the way, but I have no idea where we're going..."

Kamene could not help but chew her lip in uncertainty as the one who said she could do triage was staying behind. That had not been what she was hoping for, but she would be the last person to try to convince someone to do something dangerous that they were uncomfortable with. Besides, those with flits apparently didn't want to take them with, which she could understand. Though she wondered how they would communicate should they get in trouble and need help.

Yep, that queasiness in her stomach was pure nerves, but she'd already said she'd go, so she took a deep breath, even as she balled a hand into a fist to try to get the tension to drain.

She offered Aeljir a smile. She might be volunteering to stay behind, but alone probably was also frightening and then headed over to the others torches and picked up one of the ones that had broken by the other two and lit it.

"I think we're just following the sound." She absently tugged on a braid with her free hand before moving it down to check that she had her knife. Could she even use it if it were necessary? She had very little fighting experience and none beyond the training she'd gotten as a Candidate. "Um...maybe one of the flits should come with us? Just so we can let someone know if we need help? As long as it doesn't endanger the flit, of course."

I can stay and keep watch!
Turning to Viviette, he shot her a quick – but obviously relieved – smile.
“Thanks.” He hurried forward, with Chani curled up in his hands so that she fit easily into his palms. Setting her gently down atop the log Viviette had been using as a bench, he added:
“She’s a little shy; don’t be offended if she doesn’t say hello. She’ll stay put, though, if I ask her too.”

Running a quick finger over Chani’s snout in farewell, he turned back to where Zahrai was organizing the others into passing out torches. He declined to take one himself; there would be plenty of light, between them all, and if they stumbled upon something truly dangerous he didn’t want the added worry of dropping it and setting something on fire. Better to have his knife in one hand, and the other free, just in case.

Another shriek rose up from nearby, and he peered into the darkness, steeling himself against the chill that ran down his spine. He couldn’t deny he was curious, but even with the torches it was so difficult to see anything. Kamene suggested they bring a firelizard along, and he shrugged in agreement – it seemed like a good idea, but it sure as shells wasn’t going to be his ‘lizard. He was fretting over leaving her alone as it was, safe though she’d surely be by the fire; for all that she was a timid thing, though, she was surprisingly devoted. If their little group stirred up some trouble, out there near the cliffs, and Chani was with them, he wasn’t sure he could convince her to leave.

Zahrai and Narramir took the initiative, creping forward, and he obediently trailed behind them, careful to keep his footsteps quiet as possible – difficult to do, given the terrain. Where there wasn’t thick underbrush, in the south, there was shifting sand. You could hardly go a foot without disturbing something. Drawing his knife, he shuffled towards the edge of the cliff, and kept an eye on the Candidates ahead of him – if any of them ventured too close to the drop, he wouldn’t hesitate to call - or drag - them back. Quietly - so quiet he wasn't sure the rest of them would even hear - he ventured:
"Can anyone see anything?"

"Um...maybe one of the flits should come with us? Just so we can let someone know if we need help? As long as it doesn't endanger the flit, of course."

Pausing for only a moment to consider Kamene's statement, Narramir had to nod his head in agreement.

"I agree, Kamene. It'd probably be for the best if we had at least one of the flits to notify someone if we uh... run into trouble, or something..." It was only now that the hard-headed boy had realized the potential danger of the situation he was literally walking into. "Rili, c'mon girl, you're coming with us. Althought I don't know how much use you could really be, darling..." The last bit was added under his breath in a cheeky tone as Rili landed upon his outstretched arm with a delighted trill to be included in the fun.

That was that. Bracing himself, Narramir lifted the make-shift torch into the darkness and forced himself to take a few more cautious steps before looking back to the rest of the group. The torch only illuminated a small area ahead of them, so the pace was quite slow. Each step brought a bit more confidence, and soon he was a few meters away from the camp. This newfound conviction lasted as long as it took for whoever-- or whatever--was making the sound in the distance to wail yet again.

The sound sent a chill up the lanky candidate's spine, and he jumped back, colliding with someone behind him who (fortunately) was not carrying a torch.

"What in Faranth's name is that?! It doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard before..."
