Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Trinn, tag Narramir, but others are welcome! ^^

The Candidate girl sat at a table towards the common area of the quarters. It was meal time, and she knew she should be eating something before completing her afternoon chores. She was assigned the laundries tonight. How she dreaded being in that dank, humid room! There were very few things that Trinn felt strong feelings about, as she tended to remain unbiased, but the laundries were one of those few things that she absolutely loathed!

Her hair was loose today, which was a rare thing for her. It fell in long, glossy strands down her back. When it was down, it made her look less severe. With her sharp features and dark eyes, she tended to look hawk-like. It didn't help that her lips were thin and usually formed a single, expressionless line. She kept her thoughts close, and didn't often let any inkling of what she was thinking pass over her face.

Because of this, she was not the most approachable person in the world. The other Candidates tended to gravitate towards the warmer, bubblier personality types. Trinn didn't have that charisma that was sought after. She tended to be logical, methodical, and even clinically distant.

She liked, however, to make observations about things around her. And so she began to write.

The Weyr is suffocating in its heat, but there are all manner of beautiful dragons here that I have never seen before. This in itself makes this Weyr unique, and makes me proud to Stand as Candidate. The colors of the dragons here are Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue and Green like Fort Weyr, but then the mutation colors appear to be Garnet, which is a beautiful crimson-hued dragon, and appears to be a sort of Queen dragon, Beryllium, which is copper-hued, Gray, Black and Graphite. All of them are so very unique. As Trinn wrote, her tongue poked out very slightly from her mouth, and her brow furrowed in concentration.

It was very likely that anyone could sneak up on her and she wouldn't be aware. Now, instead of writing, she appeared to be attempting to sketch various dragons. Without her permission, her lips curved upward in a fond smile that brightened her whole face, and gave it a loveliness that it usually lacked. Trinn adored dragons and fire-lizards. She found them entrancing, and considered it a large honor to have one. Her dearest hope was to Impress one some day, and it was a hope she held dear to her heart. It was the one thing that she was expressive about, and her only true passion in life.

She could not be scientific or detached when she talked about dragons. To her, they were miracles...each and every one of them. Trinn loved to talk to dragons, and indeed made the pilgrimage as often as she was allowed to see Green Ilydeth, the dragon that brought her to Vaioa. Laloraine, she tolerated, but the gentle Green...she adored. She could be found in her spare time helping to bathe Ilydeth, and scratching her eye ridges fondly.

Before she knew it, she was sketching Ilydeth from memory. The lithe dragon body flowed on to the hide she was scratching at, the large wings gracefully arching overhead. Trinn could not help but let a small, wistful sigh burst forth from her thin lips, which were still smiling.

Narramir practically ran into the dining hall, in a rush to get his meal. This morning's workout had been particularly strenuous, and the growing boy was insatiable. But then again, was there ever a time when he felt he could not eat a whole herdbeast?

Rili chittered happily from her boy's shoulder as she took in the delicious onslaught of scents that was the dining hall. She pressed the image of various meaty foods repeatedly into Narramir's addled mind, hoping that her silly boy would get the hint. Stretching her wings, the little green jewel leapt from her shoulder-perch and flew up to the rafters, with blue-green swirling eyes watching every unguarded plate in the hall carefully. Shrugging at her sudden departure, the candidate boy veered left towards the kitchens.

With a practiced ease, Narramir emerged carrying a heaping plate spiced herdbeast and greens, two meatrolls in one hand, and another meatroll in his mouth. He swiveled his head back and forth, glancing at the various Weyrfolk eating their lunch. Some sat alone, and looked like they wanted to keep it that way! Some, on the other hand, sat alone looking wistfully towards the full tables with bantering friends. Walking on a bit slower as he deliberated where to sit, Narramir spotted a table with a few of his fellow candidates, and he quickened his pace.

Crouching low on a rafter above the mumble of conversation, Rili had her eyes locked on the unfinished plate of an unattentive brownrider. When the man rose to go fetch a glass of water, the little green flit leapt from the rafter, tucking her wings to her sides in a mad dive towards the brownrider's table. She grabbed the first thing she could get her little claws into, a particularly succulent slice of meat, and disappeared between. The dim little firelizard felt no regrets for the chaotic mess she had left of the dragonman's meal-- tipped plate and all.

As he neared the table where his peers chatted amiably, he spotted a girl who looked to be about his age, with Candidate's knots, that he had not seen around before. Narramir was not one to let himself go unintroduced to a new potential friend, so he continued walking towards the lone girl. He approached from behind, and noticed finally that the girl was not eating at all, but sketching what looked to be a dragon. Unable to announce his presence due to the extra meatroll he currently carried in his mouth due to full hands, he set his plate on the table and removed the roll to speak.

"Hey, I'm really sorry if I startled you! I just noticed you were sitting alone and had candidate knots and I didn't know if you wanted some company, or-- I'm Narramir, by the way! I'm a candidate too." He gave his new acquaintance his trademark beaming grin, and was about to continue before a familiarly bony object struck him in the back of the head. The blow was accompanied by a similarly familiar trill, as Rili announced her presence and scampered onto Narramir's shoulder, tugging another stolen scrap of meat with her. Gulping down the scrap without hesitation, she then turned her whirling eyes towards Trinn. She gracefully hopped down onto the table and skittered over to the girl who had yet to speak. She trilled cheerfully at Trinn before touching the girl's sketchbook tenderly with her forepaw, wholly intrigued by the object.

"Thats-- that's my flit, Rili. She's a terror sometimes, but she's just so cute! I swear I feed her regularly, she just... has a bad habit of eating everyone's food. Wow, she really likes you!" The teen boy laughed heartily as he watched Rili thoroughly investigate Trinn, hoping that the small green wasn't driving the poor girl mad already.

Across the dining hall, an irritated brownrider was angrily cursing whoever flipped over his plate and ruined his meal as he headed out for drills.

Trinn was focused on the elegant and yet blunt snout of the graceful Green Ilydeth when a thump drew her attention out of the fond dream world that she had firmly resided in for the last several minutes. She reluctantly dragged her dark eyes away from her beautiful subject and looked up into the face of what appeared to be a fellow candidate, by the looks of it. She examined him much as she would if she were a scientist with a microscope, not seeming to notice that some people might think that such scrutiny was rude.

Trinn didn't mean anything by it, after all. She was just an innately curious mind. She recognized the face. She felt sure she had seen him at candidate lessons, but she had not yet met him. This was not uncommon for the girl. She was not one to approach people unless by absolute necessity. She was comfortable staying in the background, analyzing everything around her with her inscrutable gaze. The look now that she leveled at Narramir was not unfriendly, though it may have been unnerving to some, due to the fact that it was devoid of emotion.

She was neither glad nor upset that he had joined her. It was a simple fact. She had to admit, however, that it was one of the first times she had been approached by another. She was not generally a super noticeable person. In fact, sometimes people had a tendency to jostle her by accident, because they failed to notice her presence. This fact did not upset Trinn. In fact, it suited her very well to blend in with her surroundings.

However, something happened that soon tugged illusive emotion forward. The appearance of the Green fire-lizard made a charming smile light the features of the girl. It was clear that she was delighted by the little beast, and she reached out a tentative hand to rub at the creature's eye ridges. To her, fire-lizards were like miniature dragons, and therefore, fascinating. She would tolerate all manner of company if she got to be in the presence of a dragon or a fire-lizard.

Trinn belatedly realized that the Candidate had addressed her, and she replied a beat too late, "Hello Narramir. My name is Trinn. Your Rili is a beautiful, charming creature." As she spoke, it was almost jarring to hear how low her voice was.

Trinn was a small girl, diminutive in stature, and childishly thin. Those who spoke with her expected her to have a high, girlish voice, and so often when she spoke, it startled them to hear such a rich alto sound. It was a voice that was very confident. In fact, when she gave her opinion about Rili, the way that she said it made it sound like a fact.

As she spoke, her eyes did not leave the precious fire-lizard that was now examining her every bit as intensely as she was examining it. The smile continued to play at her lips and it lit up her whole face, making her look much friendlier.

Narramir was shocked by the sudden change of expression on his dining companions face upon seeing the little green food-thief. Elbows on the table, he rested his chin atop his interlaced fingers, a charming grin spreading slowly across his face as he watched the interactions between girl and flit. It was quite obvious that the girl, Trinn, was not annoyed in the slightest by Rili's antics and was smitten with the little green.

Rili practically purred at the scritches she was receiving from her new friend, affectionately pushing her head into the girl's hand. She trilled gleefully and spread her wings, before quickly closing them and skittering quickly up Trinn's forearm to her shoulders. The page Trinn had been working on now caught the fire lizard's attention, and she looked down briefly before relaying mental images to both Narramir and Trinn of the actual Ilydeth as the busybody flit had seen her earlier that day around the Weyr. Or so the boy assumed, at least. She jumped back down onto the table excitedly, and grabbed a piece of food from her boy's plate.

"Wow, how the-- oh, shaffit, you're really amazing at that!" Narramir pointed to the girl's sketch of an elegant dragon. "Rili recognized the sketch, which is saying something, because she's not the brightest glow in the hall... But isn't she the cutest? Yes you are, you're the cutest, Rili. You are the prettiest little flit on Pern!"

Narramir's baby-talk was probably gratingly obnoxious to anyone else, but Rili ate it up with joy as she trilled and vibrated against her boy's cheek, as he had lowered his head to be on her level. She loved Narramir, and she definitely loved being praised, even if she didn't understand why she was so good. Turning his attention back to Trinn, his face was colored with a mild blush of embarrassment.

"Hah, sorry about that... So, how'd you learn to do that? I'm super impressed!" Finally settling down after seeing that the girl was not horrified at his presence, Narramir began to eat his meal with as much grace and dignity as he could muster. He was not always the neatest eater, but usually Rili helped "clean up." He almost did not notice that his dining companion was not, in fact, dining at all; Narramir had simply assumed she was eating casually while working on her sketch, but he could see no trace of a meal around her.

"Are you hungry, Trinn? I'd be happy to share, or go get you something!"

Trinn couldn't help but allow a girlish giggle escape her lips as Rili made her way up her slender arm and onto her slight shoulder.
"It tickles!" she gasped, shuddering slightly. The declaration was followed by a sudden gasp as the adorable Green fire-lizard transmitted images into her mind of a moving, breathing Ilydeth who greatly resembled the picture that Trinn had been working on just moments ago.

Apparently, the clever little creature recognized Ilydeth from Trinn's humble scratchings. The girl candidate blushed pink quite against her will. She didn't usually let anyone look at her sketches. She didn't claim to be an artist at all, but by drawing dragons and fire-lizards, she felt closer to them, almost as if she were carrying them around with her everywhere that she went.

In her previous drawings the Candidate Master's dragon could be found brought to life as well. Recently, she had the opportunity to examine Gallith closely, because she had been standing not too far away from him. Indeed, it had been hard for her to focus on the lesson, harrowing as it was, because the noble Blue was so close that she longed to touch him, running her small palms against his warm, musky hide. But Trinn, being Weyrbred, knew better than that. Touching a dragon was extremely rude unless you had the rider or dragon's permission beforehand.

The Green Ilydeth, nor her rider Laloraine, seemed to mind in the slightest when Trinn would stop by. In fact, Laloraine and her Green had helped out with Weyrlings back at Fort, and so the Dragonpair were quite used to having followers and admirers.

Trinn felt a pang of loss as Rili left her shoulder, and watched after the delicate Green flit longingly. It would be only too easy to slip into a daydream, wondering what it would be like if she could only Impress a dragon or fire-lizard for herself.

But the Candidate was aware that she was not alone, so now was not the time to give into her thoughts and deepest wishes. Narramir seemed to be a friendly boy who liked conversation, and so Trinn would have to attend to what she said, so that she could respond in turn.

The girl watched the obvious affection that he had for Rili, and quite against her wishes, Trinn found herself liking Narramir already. It was obvious that he shared her affinity for fire-lizards, at least. In her opinion, a person who didn't mind talking about dragons and fire-lizards was not half bad company.

"Don't apologize. She is worthy of every bit of praise!" declared Trinn, knowing that had she such a companion, she would probably fawn endlessly over her.

"Oh. Well, I suppose I just do it idly, to pass time." Trinn was not one to spend her spare time socializing, which was why Narramir was the first other Candidate that she had made the acquaintance of. She was very comfortable in her own thoughts, or slipping off to Laloraine's weyr to see Ilydeth when she had a spare moment or two.

She looked at Narramir unblinkingly as he ate, and surmised that she should perhaps eat as well. She knew that the social convention was to eat when your companions ate, for watching them dine usually made other people uncomfortable. That, and Trinn had not eaten. She was not very hungry; Trinn didn't have the appetite of a growing adolescent boy--but she knew she needed the nutrition.

"Thank you, Narramir, but I will be right back. I'll go gather myself some food." She supposed, as she stood up and walked to get a plate, that it was a good thing that the other Candidate had come to sit with her, as she could have easily sketched until her free time was gone, and therefore she would very likely have missed a meal. And though not hungry now, Trinn would regret missing a meal after laboring hard. Candidate duties were rigorous, and therefore she required food as fuel to keep her going.

She returned with her plate swiftly, her speed quite surprising for a girl of her small size. She picked up a meatroll and daintily took a bite, puzzling at why the other Candidate wished to sit with her. A boy as friendly as he surely had a plethora of friends. And while Trinn was not unfriendly, she was not warm and outgoing as he was.
