Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

They'd come a long way since their first tumultuous arrival to the cove. The tunnelsnakes had mostly been driven off and the local wildlife was slowly learning that humans were more trouble than they were worth. With the combined effort of weyrfolk, dragonrider, and wherhandler, what had been a cozy little stretch of beach had been transformed into a hive of activity. Stone buildings had sprung up all over the place, the largest of which people had started to call the Main Hall. It housed a common dining area and kitchens, as well as dozens of rooms.

The cliff caves had not yet been made habitable, that was next on the list, but there was now a basic covered section of sand that would serve as a hatching ground for both wher and dragon. There were no fancy stands like back at Vaioa, but it would do well enough. Those in the South had either learned to appreciate simplicity in design or had slunk home with their tails between their legs long ago.

It was a lot to accomplish in just a month, and it had come at no small cost. Felines still stalked the edges of the settlement, picking off unwary and unguarded exploerers. Smaller tunnelsnakes and a variety of biting insects were a plague, but one that could be managed given time and patience. They were carving out a home here in the wilderness and the Southerners couldn't be more proud.

Tonight, the beach was lit by several enormous bonfires. Harpers and merchants and food had been flown in from the north. Visitors from all over Pern had arrived to see this fabled Southern settlement and wine flowed in abundance. It was a night to celebrate the progress they'd made, and all that would come in the future.

((anyone who can get a ride south is welcome!))

Mother of Whers
Arask watch for cats, the blue's voice whispered through her mind as they paused at one of the outer bonfires. Arask wore his goggles, to keep his eyes safe from the many big fires, but he still averted his gaze from the bright flames. Ara found herself mirroring the action, as she placed a hand on Arask's shoulder. Part of her wanted to tell her blue to relax, maybe enjoy himself, but that just wasn't Arask. He needed to be doing something, even if it was just keeping watch.

"Stay safe," Ara whispered back to him, patting his rough hide. Arask twisted his neck--still so stiff and not nearly as flexible as it used to be--and caught her other hand in his jaws. He squeezed lightly, the points of his teeth just breaking the skin, then released her and slunk off into the night. Ara watched him go, half wishing to follow. But no. She would stay, and celebrate the settlement's achievements with her comrades. With a deep breath, she put on her Gather Face, the special Respectful Face hovering at the forefront of her mind, just in case she ran into Jerund or another figure of higher rank. You're the same rank, though, her brain reminded her, but she refused to accept that. Old habits were simply too hard to break.

It was easy to smile and pick up on the positive atmosphere. The people around her were genuinely happy, and Ara couldn't help but feel the same way. There had been casualties, losses, setbacks. Yet, they'd still been fairly successful for the short amount of time that they'd been in the South. Let's hope it stays that way. It didn't hurt to be positive, though her mind was coming up with multiple ways that their plans could be ruined in the future. Felines, storms, earthquakes, floods...

Future future. Now now, Arask stated simply. Ara got a feeling that he was gazing towards the jungle. There were things moving around, but none were immediate threats.

I suppose you're right. Though we can't get too complacent.

Is one night. Go do "fun." Arask keep safe. Other whers, too. Another sensation came to Ara: her blue was not alone.

That, more than anything, helped her let go of her worries. She skirted around another fire, saw a table serving wine, and made a beeline to it. It had been so long since she'd allowed herself wine. At least, it felt that way. Helping herself to a cup, she resumed her aimless wandering, sipping at the sweet-yet-bitter drink. There were a handful of people that she hoped to see tonight, but she didn't even know who to begin with. Hama, Jerund, Kalser... Verdani and Keera. Just to make sure that they didn't get into trouble. Not because she wanted to see them. Definitely not.

Whelps annoy Arask. If drunk one hug, Arask throw to cats.

Ara knew better than to think he was joking. Arask did not have a sense of humor. Still, the corners of her mouth quirked up higher. We both know you won't do that. You're exaggerating.

No true. Girl know nothing.

This. This was why she transferred to Vaioa. She wanted a chance at this. As a new transfer, she'd missed out on the initial volunteering, but as soon as the opportunity came up again, Corvind was all over it. This place was just so green and unexplored and dangerous! So much room for adventure and activity and challenges.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say you loved the idea of the South more than me, Venatoth snarked with a snort as she winged over the cove that was rapidly developing into a bustling hold of sorts. The bonfires lit the beach, ocean, and stone buildings in a golden glow, and it definitely didn't feel like an autumn night here. Oh no, still quite humid, even at altitude, and Corvind knew she'd dressed appropriately. Though most of her garb was still more suited to the wet Telgaran winters, she'd found something suitable for the heat.

Oh shush. You're just as excited as I am. Admit it.

And give you the satisfaction? Ha! The acrobatic green tucked her wings and stooped, zipping over the growing settlement in a whoosh that had her rider laughing. Corvind shifted in the straps, leaning forward, weight braced on her knees, and she felt the tension and coiling of her dragon's muscles against her thighs. Flying was freeing in a way Cori had never experienced while racing runners. Vena zipped over the water, dragging her toes in the waves before flaring her wings wide and landing with a soft thump up the beach.

Think you'll find someone interesting?

"Oh come on, you can find someone interesting too," Cori needled her dragon despite knowing Venatoth was leading her on. The green chuckled deeply and flicked her wings closed. "Yeah, tell me you're not doing that to attract attention."

What? You're not the only one who's unattached and in a new Weyr, remember.

"Venatoth, I didn't take you to be that kind of dragon."

Please. I'm that kind of green. Just like you're that kind of girl.

"I'd be offended if it wasn't true," Cori laughed, walking up the beach with her dragon toward the glow of bonfires. Perhaps there was someone interesting she could meet. There were dragons and riders from all over Pern. Cori recognized knots from her own Telgar, High Reaches, Benden, a whole slew from Igen... Not to mention all of the crafts represented! Cori wasn't in the market for anything in particular, so instead she headed for the makeshift stage and dancing square. "Try not to get eaten, love."

I'd wish you the same but... Without waiting for her rider's comeback, Venatoth took off for the heights above the cliffs where she saw other dragons gathering. Apparently they'd had quite the problem with an intelligent but feral pack animal, something unlike anything the North had ever seen. Of course Cori had only heard the rumors and not done her own research, so Venatoth wasn't even certain what to call the creatures. Perhaps a local could inform her.

Meanwhile, Cori could only shake her head and tuck away wisps of hair mussed by her helmet, goggles, and Venatoth's take off. Shedding her flight jacket in the heat, Cori dropped it off at a stall set up to receive them, took a tag, and headed for the fun. She paid for a skin of wine along the way and had no trouble picking her way through the crowds. Helped that she had a higher vantage. Picking up a glass along the way, Cori happily found a table next to the dance square and decided to start off the night by enjoying the wine, the music, and the view.

Ahh, now this was such a good idea! Coming to the South and dragging her sister with her. Not that Danya felt the same. Of course she had to really sell the fact that they would need a good smith to help out while they set themselves up but she eventually gave in. Just as she had every other time Dani had gotten wind of something exciting. Dani was grinning widely, one hand clutching Danya's upper arm and the other a bottle of spirits. The wine being served was nice and all but Dani rather liked stronger drinks.

"Why did you have to drag me out here? I could be working instead of having to watch you make an idiot of yourself." Danya complained but didn't really make any moves to stop her sister from dragging her around. She knew it was useless to try and dissuade Dani once she'd gotten an idea in her head. But she really could've been working right now. She could be working on so much. Setting up a whole new homestead meant she had plenty of opportunities.

"Ya gotta get out every now and then. 'Sides, you work too much. Gotta celebrate everyone's hard work tonight!" Dani grinned, glancing around the fires before landing on a familiar face. Aha! Another victim already! Another tug on her sister's arm and she set course for a certain bluehandler. She hadn't actually gotten the chance to see much of Ara or Arask but she wasn't going to let the chance slip past her. "'Ey, Ara!" She called out as soon as she was close, letting go of her sister to throw her arm playfully over the other woman's shoulders. "Fancy seein' ya here. With people and drinkin' and, y'know, fun times."

Danya crossed her arms and raised a brow at the two. "Hm, is this another one of your bedmates? I'd rather not have another misunderstanding happening." She blinked before remembering just how her sister could be. "Or is this another one of your 'friends'?" Eyes shifted over to Ara before she grinned faintly at the woman. "I kinda feel sorry for you."
