Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Mother of Whers
Months had passed since their arrival at Vaioa. Tiberis and Tiberisk had settled into their new routine almost immediately. Mines were mines, whether they be in Crom or Vaioa or the Reaches. The bluepair gladly threw themselves into their work, giving their all every night, sometimes staying up well into the morning to assist their fellow miners. Tiberis found himself surrounded by like-minded men and women that he had become well-acquainted with. Tiberisk had no trouble befriending the calmer whers in the Troop, and even some miners. All in all, the pair was content. But the same couldn't be said about their ward. Oberis seemed unhappy. He had not progressed as much as Tiberis would have liked, though the man had seen some minor improvements that gave him hope. The boy did not seem to like his new home. It saddened both Tiberis and Tiberisk, though Tiberisk was the only one to attempt to offer comfort.

Tiberis couldn't offer comfort. It was not in his nature to do so. He could only try to encourage Oberis--which came off as critiques more than anything else--and spend time with him when he wasn't working. Unknown to his nephew, the man had also begun to formulate a plan to better acclimate the boy to his new environment, a plan that would offer Oberis both companionship and responsibility. There was one gray and four greens at Vaioa. Tiberis had politely inquired about their Running schedules. He had also requested to be told if and when the Hold would be expecting any egg shipments from Crom. Tiberisk approved of the plan. He thought that Oberis seemed too lonely, and would benefit from a bond-mate. All that was left to do was wait for an egg, and tell the boy.

Because miners and wherhandlers shared quarters, Tiberis had been able to arrange for Oberis to share lodging with himself and Tiberisk. Their room was large enough for two men and a small wher, but spartan in decoration. Two beds, Tiberisk's pile of blankets, a table, and storage for their belongings. The closeness allowed the bluepair to keep an eye on the lazy boy, and it also provided ample opportunity for family bonding. Which, to most people, would appear to be chores done together.

"Oberis, wake up and come over here," Tiberis barked one dawn, as he and Tiberisk returned from their post-work baths. He had settled on the floor near Tiberisk's bed, a pot of oil beside him. While whers did not strictly need to be oiled as dragons and firelizards did, Tiberisk enjoyed it, and it was a bonding experience for the bluepair. They often allowed Oberis to share the experience with them. Tiberisk sat down obediently, his body wriggling in excitement.

Come, Oberis. Come oil Tiberisk.

Months had passed, and he still wasn't used to life in the Vaioa Hold. He just couldn't shake the idea that there was nothing here for him. Sure, he was a good miner in theory, but there was a stark difference between 'in theory' and 'in practice'. Although he knew what to do and was actually pretty good at doing it, Oberis saw little point in putting the effort in. He had no motivation. What would he get if he became a successful miner? Tiberis' approval? Please. He might want his uncles approval, but he was pretty sure that he would never get it no matter how good he did. Because even if he became the best miner in the entire sharding hold he would turn around and say that he could do better. All he did was judge, judge, judge, critique, glower, judge.

Today was a big day for moping. (Today? Tonight? Schedules were weird around wher people. 'Around sleep time'. That was close enough to an exact term.) If anyone called him out on it, there is no way he would admit that he was moping, but let's face it, he was moping. At least he wasn't awake and moping? Well, didn't look awake. Despite only being slightly tired, he had his eyes shut and was trying his best to appear dead to the world.

It didn't work. Tiberis didn't care about menial things like if you were asleep or not. When it was time to move it was time to move. Funny how tired he suddenly felt upon being ordered to get up.

Oberis noodled out of his cot with an exaggerated groan. "What? Is sleeping a crime now?" For all that he hadn't actually been asleep he was certainly sporting the living dead look of the freshly awoken. "Not all of us are able to run on determination and spite alone, you know. Human beings need things." Things like socialization with people who weren't grumpy old men. Unfortunately, the hold didn't seem to have many of those.

Despite his grumbling, he obediently sat down beside Tiberisk for oiling time. He liked the blue, and oiling him was kinda fun. "Got any itches?" he inquired.

Using his fingers to comb still-damp hair out of his face, Tiberis regarded his nephew with solemn eyes. If Oberis looked hard enough, he might have been able to see something close to sadness. The boy reminded him so much of his mother sometimes. She was such a grouch as a child, when we woke her up early. The man wondered, not for the first time, if that trait had stayed with her in her adult Turns. Abruptly, he closed the thoughts out of his mind. He would never know. There was no point in wondering. Toril was dead. But Oberis was not.

"Don't mouth off," Tiberis growled, stern, but not angry. He could not truly be angry with Oberis. Not right now, at least. The boy looked a mess. Clearly, bedhead ran in the family. "Come here. You sleep too much. It would do you good to learn how to run on 'determination and spite alone.' Maybe then you'd be somewhat useful." He twisted a cloth in his hands, his expression daring Oberis to retort. The boy would, no doubt. It was in his nature.

The stony expression on the bluehandler's face softened into something less like rock and more like semi-melted rock when Oberis sat down next to Tiberisk. Improvement. The lad hadn't even fought much. Nodding, he slid the oil pot closer to Oberis, so he could reach it as well, and tossed him a rag. The boy knew the drill. There was no need for instruction.

Tiberisk butted Oberis' chest with his head, his happy green eyes half-lidded as Tiberis began to rub oil into his spine. Yes, good. Feel good. Oberis, do throat? Itchy. In a gesture uncharacteristic to most whers, Tiberisk tilted his head back to bare his throat to the boy.

Watching the two, Tiberis spoke after a moment. "Would you like your own wher, Oberis?" He never had been one to beat around the bush. Straightforward and direct worked so much better, and got the job done more efficiently.

In his groggy and grumpy state, Oberis failed to spot the flash of what might be sadness upon his uncle's face. Then again, he may not have noticed it anyway. Subtle things were often missed by the apprentice. Blunt words were the best way to get through to him. Words like the accusation of him sleeping too much and not being useful. Yeah, he was able to pick out enough of Tiberis' expression to be able to tell that a retort might not be the best idea, but he didn't really care. He would speak when he wanted and right now he wanted to speak.

Oberis gave his uncle a look while he dipped the rag into the oil pot. "I sleep a perfectly normal amount, you're just not normal." His voice lowered somewhat as he grumbled, mostly to himself, "and I shouldn't need to be what you consider useful. I offer plenty to the world as it is." His uncles definition of 'useful' involved no rest. Ever. For anyone. You worked, theoretically you managed to not completely exhaust yourself somehow, likely from slowly siphoning the energy from those who attended basic needs such as sleep until they were empty husks, and then you worked some more. Huh. Maybe that was how people like Tiberis were made. Other workaholics slowly sucking all of the light and joy from their souls. No smiles. Only work.

Grumpy as he may be, or may be attempting to be, it couldn't really stand up to Tiberisk. A goofy grin slowly began to spread across his face. He rubbed the oil-y rag across the wher's throat, being careful to pay extra attention to any parts that seemed particularly dry. "Good wher," he cooed, "best friend." He could think about the sad reality of the fact that his uncle's wher was his best friend later on. Right not he was focusing on wher oiling and then - oh look - a question. A question that he had not expected, really thought about, and came entirely out of left field. Had he fantasized about a dragon swooping down, searching him, and whisking him away from this pit of desert misery a few times? Maybe. But he had never expected what just came out of his uncles mouth.

"What?" His face was a beautiful collage of surprise, shock, and the very sentiment of the word 'what'.

Critical malfunction. Please restart your Oberis.

Ah, there it was. Tiberis nodded to himself, as if confirming that Oberis had indeed decided to mouth him off again. "That is debatable," he replied in an equally low voice. Perhaps he was abnormal, built of stronger stuff than other men. But he was certain that, if Oberis had grown up in the quarry like he had, the lad would be less lazy. He would know how to properly expend energy, instead of wasting it on childish whims and whatever else Oberis wasted time doing. The boy would be far more useful, too. You have nothing to offer the world, boy. Not until you develop some kind of work ethic and get your shaffit together. Laziness and a poor attitude did not an asset make. How many times had that been drilled into him?

The man's yellow eyes continued to regard his nephew and his wher while he worked oil into Tiberisk's hide. "He is not a canine, Oberis," he chastised, but with less bite this time. Tiberisk's pleasure was leaking into him, mellowing him the smallest bit. The blue wher groaned and hummed in approval, his neck curving backward in an extreme arch. His throat vibrated under Oberis' hand.

Tiberisk love Oberis. Good friend. Good oiler. Yes.

The sight made Tiberis nearly placid, nearly content. But alas, such feelings did not last long with Oberis around. Sure enough, the boy came up with a disappointing answer to his question. Of course. With a sigh, Tiberis moved his rag to Tiberisk's ribs. "A wher, Oberis," he repeated slowly, as if he were speaking to a dimglow. "I have been asking around, and I'm fairly sure I can get you an egg from the next shipment or Run. It would be good for you." Taking care of a living being that was intimately connected to you was not a task that you could shirk. Not without direct, personal consequences. Yes, that would be very good for Oberis.

Little Oberisk for Tiberisk to teach. Like Tiberis teach Oberis. It was clear that Tiberisk approved of the idea.
