Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

No one said that physical labor was easy. However, what he was doing seemed to make the jump from 'hard' to 'absolutely grueling'. Cutting down trees was no walk in the park in the most average of conditions. When you took the sheer heat and the fact that he wasn't used to this into consideration... well. R'vor felt like he might melt into a useless puddle of goo at any moment. He had gotten used to work since accepting search and later becoming a rider, but this was an entirely different thing from what he was used to. There was a part of him that wanted to put down his and request that he work on something else. He didn't. By transferring to the south, he and Hynarth had made a commitment to helping establish the weyrhold. He was not going to let people think that they weren't capable of pulling their weight.

It was with sweat and commitment that he powered through each swing of his axe. Every now and then his eyes darted around, warily watching for one of the creatures of the south. There were just so many things. He was also aware of his gray lurking in the back of his mind. She was concerned about both how hot her rider felt and the worries swarming through his mind. Rather than saying something that might exasperate his concerns, she attempted to put them at ease. << The cot hold will be beautiful when it's done. I'm sure everything will be fine, but don't be afraid to take a break if you need one. >> Her voice was a gentle coo with just a hint of concern for her rider's well-being. She didn't approve of slacking, but taking a break when your body needed it was something else entirely.

'I'm sure everything will be fine.' In retrospect, saying that may have been tempting fate a little.

R'vor allowed his axe to fall upon the trunk of the tree he was working on with a thud before beginning to pull it out with a dull shlick. He began to respond to his dragon only for a demonic screeching caw to split the air. R'vor jumped, dropping the axe in his alarm. A quick glance toward the canopy revealed Wherries gathering in the branches and beginning to convene on himself and the other workers. The sight made him freeze up. Feck. Just... feck.

After a moment of ominous glaring, the Wherries flew down in a flurry of squawking and pecking. << Move! >> Hynarth commanded. That was enough to make him begin scrambling backwards with a startled yelp.

In many ways, swinging an axe was not that different from swinging a hammer. The heat of the south was not that different from the heat of a forge in a desert, except, of course, for the humidity. Z'lik did not mind the hard work too much, and he and Lerath would reward themselves with a dip once their shift were through.

Or you could take a break now and come swim with me. It's such a beautiful day.

He chuckled as he swung the axe again. Lazy love. We're building a new home, where we can be lazy and proud of our part later. He would prefer to swim with her, but he would pull his share. They always would.

There was a screeching sound, and a tension that was palpable in the air as everyone seemed to know something had just gone terribly terribly wrong. Z'lik looked up and found himself just staring at the flock of angry, murderous wherries.

RUN, LOVE-MINE

Where to? There did not seem to be much hope of outrunning them, and below the canvas the Dragons could not do much to protect them. He swung his axe over head, trying to keep the angry birds from him, even as he looked for a place to run to.

Why did they transfer south? Because he wanted to help? To make a difference? Oh Faranth, he was an idiot. An idiot filled with stupid ideas that was probably going to end up as wherry feed sooner rather than later. Hynarth was bound to want to have a conversation with him about those self-deprecating thoughts later. Assuming he made it out of this, that is. For now most of their attentions were spent on trying to escape the murder-wherries.

A glance to the side revealed one of the riders who had been working with him panicking and flailing his axe around. R'vor let out a yelp of alarm. "Don't do that!" Flinging a heavy bladed instrument around like it was a childs toy could lead to fumbling, then falling, then slicing. He didn't want to think about what came after slicing.

You need to get away from the wherries, Hynarth urgently reminded him.

I know! But you can't reach us here, and it's a long way ou- his thought cut out as an idea came to him. It was a long way out if you tried to run through the trees, but what happened if you tried to go up? It was risky, especially since they would be entering the wherries own turf, but their dragons should be able to reach them once they reached the top of the trees. There was also the chance that the foliage would obscure the wherries and make it harder for them to attack.

"Can you climb?" he asked Z'lik. Hopefully he wouldn't ask questions. This was not the time for a question and answer session.
