Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

A large swath of forest must be cleared for the hold and you are assigned to tree-chopping duty. While you work, you disturb a nest of flying, stinging bugs that swarm the area. Their angry buzzing fills the air and even dragons make a break for the relief the ocean offers.[/align]

It was days like today when Noette remembered she was a wher candidate. Instead of using her turns of experience and knowledge of machines and smithing and designing to good use, she had been assigned to clearing land. All day. Bright and early, she had risen to this new and unexplored land, ready to begin taming it. She'd sketched plans for irrigation, harbor defenses against the huge toothy beasts that still liked to take a bite out of unlucky swimmers, and a tide-powered mill. All rough sketches of an excited mind, ready to propose her ideas to the other smiths helping to build the Hold in the South.

Except she was a wher candidate and had been assigned an axe instead of a drafting table.

The axe was a horribly inefficient tool. With the wild bramble of a jungle to clear, Noette got the axe-head tangled in vines more often than its edge bit into the side of a tree. Surely there was a better way to do this. Clear the overgrowth first, then the underbrush, then the trees. Yet the axe was still the wrong tool for the job. Didn't woodcrafters have better tools than this? Noette couldn't imagine the grove managers of Lemos cut down every tree with an axe. Though that would explain why wooden anything cost a pretty mark.

Still. Horribly inefficient. Noette cursed her tool, insults ever more creative the more she sweat.

Part of Noette praised the idea of using smiths for this kind of work. They had strong backs, shoulders, and arms, and were quite accustomed to working in the heat. That was a very small part, though. Everything else hated how sticky and grimy she was and how heavy the axe grew. In the heat, she'd quickly stripped down to a sleeveless shirt and thanked her lucky stars that Gadget and Gizmo were smart enough to hold vines and leaves out of her way or to hunt the random bugs that skittered from their hidey holes.

Too bad there were only two of them. They didn't stand a chance when Noette's axe found a hidden cavity in the tree and disturbed a whole mess of Faranth knew what.

"Bugs!" she yelled spontaneously, nevermind that it was only the obvious. Noette swatted at her skin, but she was never fast enough to catch the ones stinging her. Gadget and Gizmo, cowards that they were, disappeared between, leaving Noette to yelp and squeal and slap at anything that came too near her head.

Whatever she'd disturbed flooded the area, and Noette was glad she wasn't the only one beating a retreat from the woods. Abandoning her horrible axe (whose name would probably be Dull for how little damage it did to trees), the engineer sprinted for the beach. Her goggles had protected her eyes from the insects, but she didn't notice how many times she'd been stung until salt water splashed over the welts.

"Ow ow ow ow ow," she chanted under her breath--loudly--while hiding from the bugs in the water.

Except...

Wait.

She was in the water. The cove that those giant water tunnelsnake things so loved. Noette hastily scanned around her, looking for disturbances in the water. Wait, she had goggles. Ducking under the water, she looked around but only saw the flailing limbs and bodies of the other hapless victims of the diabolical insect swarm.

Thousands of stinging insects or creatures with teeth as long as her forearm. Tough choice.

"This is why I don't like trees," she said to no one in particular and everyone who'd jumped in the surf with her. Nevermind that she'dnever actually thought she disliked trees. She just did right then. For hiding such an awful racket as those bugs.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Give an ineffective tool to an ineffective girl and progress would be slow. Painstakingly slow. Koka was pretty sure she could feel critical eyes on her as her peers had to pick up the slack around her, but she tried not to let them bother her. She was small and her arms were thin, so she really didn’t understand why she had been assigned to this detail in the first place. But she was eager to help however she could in this new land and she wouldn’t complain.

More often than not her hatchet would bounce off the bark of whatever tree she happened to be hacking at. But Koka kept at it even as her back burned and sweat dripped down her arms. Like many others she had stripped down to only her undershirt at some point, but still she was bothered by the heat of the day.

At some point someone yelled something and Koka glanced up to see people fleeing the scene. “W- what?” called at the backs of the others, but no one paused to fill her in. But, she figured it out soon enough. “Ouch!” something stung her cheek and she suddenly became aware of the horrible buzzing sound. Crying out, the girl threw down her hatchet and took off after the group.

Her short legs carried her only so fast and she remained at the back of the crowd, quite at the mercy of the bugs. She was yipping and shouting, making more noise than she ever had in her entire life, as she tried hard not to trip over anything. The girl didn’t even think of the consequences as she splashed into the water.

Sweet relief. She dove under the surf and held her breath for a few moments before resurfacing. She wiped salt water from her eyes and looked toward a voice. “A- after today I don’t l- like trees much either,” she said, trying to make light the situation. “N- Noette, right?” Koka was good at knowing people from a distance, but she had never actually talked to her fellow candidate before now. Yet she was pretty confident she knew what her name was. Hard to mistake the girl with her goggles. Plus, she was one of few people who share her small height. “I’m Kok—“

The girl went silent and her eyes grew wide. “S- something just brushed my leg!” she cried, and then felt something bite her ancle. “Ahhhh!!!” Koka kicked and flailed and splashed, fighting as something tried to pull her under.
