Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Haely flopped into her bed when she finally made it back to the barracks, her joints aching and her muscles throbbing painfully as she let out a deep, long-suffering sigh. Feran chirruped softly, shifting to curl up on the girl's chest to soothe her with the warmth radiating from her, and Haely gently rubbed the gold's back as Puck perched on one of the bedposts with concern whirling in his eyes. Between caring for two metallic lizards and working through her daily chores, Haely had found that she had very little time to do anything she had used to, back in the days when she had been happy and obnoxious in the creche.

She had tried to maintain friendships, but it had been hard; Barrez and Lessal were now dragonriders, and they were super-busy, too. She had made some friends amongst her fellow Candidates, of course, but even during chore hours they rarely had time to talk. Even now, at night, she found herself too tired to try and socialize... or read... or give her lizards another oiling... She hadn't even had time to visit her newly-discovered father hardly at all, not to mention her stone-eyed mother! No, all she wanted to do was cry and fall asleep after such a long day.

She didn't want to say that not Impressing had gotten to her. She really didn't want to admit that her heart twitched with jealousy every time she spotted her friends walking with their precious little dragonets across the 'Bowl. Despite her dearest wishes, however, those things were completely true. She was miserable being stuck in Candidacy, forced to endure hard work and sharp words from the few dragonriders--and upstart weyrlings--that took advantage of her low station when they could. There was a time, she remembered, that she would have loved to do something for a 'Rider. There was a time that she would have leapt ten feet if they'd asked her to hop two.

This was not that time. She hugged Feran to her, crying quietly as her mind wandered to the image of her mother's empty seat in the Stands after the Hatching. She'd disappointed everyone, and the life that had once been hard work for good reason now felt like nothing more than a harsh punishment for not being good enough to attract a baby dragon to her side.

"Oh, Feran... I really messed up, d-didn't I?" She sobbed, her little body shaking as Feran creeled softly and leaned forward to lick at her tears. Puck puffed up on the bed post, creeling with the gold as he reached out to touch his Person unhappily.

"I just... I d-don't know what I did wrong..."

Bronnia had hoped that her little brother would be out in the commons, to catch up and see how his day had been, but it quickly became obvious that Zorog had likely already holed himself up in his room. She wasn't all that surprised, since, even with all the encouragement she had given her little brother, he still was very meek and nervous about many things. It wasn't like she could just barge into Zorog's room, considering the rules, so she started to head back to her room.

She was just about to open the door to her room when she thought she heard some very quiet whimpering coming from the room directly across the way from her own. Bronnia really didn't like the sound of someone crying, of someone being sad - this much she knew from some of the times Zorog had been down on himself - so she couldn't help but quietly open the door and see if she could do something about that.

Seeing the little girl, who had to have been close in age to Zorog and probably little younger, sobbing quietly on her bed really tugged on Bronnia's heart strings and she had to speak. "Hey... what's wrong, sweetie?"

So consumed was Haely in her misery that she nearly didn't notice when the other girl opened the door. Indeed, she might not have even heard her soft query were it not for Puck's sudden, metallic chirp of alarm. Feran swiveled her head up to look at the interloper, eyes briefly sparking yellow before settling into a slow, dull whirl of sad blue-greys. She knew that girl. It was another of Haely's fellows who had been left Standing when her large cousins had hatched. The gold let out a soft peep, nosing at her Person, before shifting to get more comfortable on Haely's chest as the girl finally looked up to see Bronnia in her doorway.

"O-Oh... hullo," she muttered, sniffling as she brought a sleeve up to wipe her nose. "I'm just... sad. 'Cuz I didn't get a dragon. And 'cuz I'm pretty sure my mom thinks I'm... th-the worst."

She sobbed the last word, tears bubbling fresh in her eyes as she cradled Feran close.

"I d-don't know what I did, but I m-messed up," she continued between little hiccuping bouts, "b-because otherwise a d-d-dragon would've... would've picked me, right? Th-They picked my friends, but I did some... something wrong, so they d-didn't... pick... me!"

Seeing Haely so sad and down on herself after being left Standing made Bronnia's heart ache even more as the younger girl spoke of her woes. She hid a frown when the girl spoke about how she thought her mother hated her because she didn't Impress; surely that couldn't be right, right?

Bronnia slowly approached Haely when she was done explaining her woes, and sat on the bed with her, draping one arm around the girl in a hug. "You don't have to worry about not getting a dragon now. I've been left Standing several times already, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. You have, like, forever to get a dragon of your own, and, when you do, it won't matter how long you will have waited, because it will all be worth it! Just keep your chin up. Your dragon will find you someday!" Of course, not everyone was destined to Impress a dragon, but Bronnia wasn't going to tell Haelyea that, since that would just be mean! And she was so young, Bronnia couldn't imagine that a dragon wouldn't find her someday!

"And I can't imagine your mother actually hates you for not Impressing this time. Was this time your first time? You have so many more chances to Impress!"

Haely continued to sniffle and sob as the older girl approached her, wiping at her eyes dismally with her sleeves. She felt miserable, and pathetic, and she only wished she had gotten a dragon so that she wouldn't be so alone and worthless as she languished away in Candidacy! When the other girl wrapped an arm around her, however, some of the shroud lifted.

Slowly, Haely leaned into Bronnia, the flow of tears slowing somewhat as she listened to her words of wisdom. She did have quite a long time to get a dragon, she supposed. After all, she'd only just started Standing. And even if her friends had moved up without her, she wasn't totally without friends--like this girl right here! She seemed very nice.

"W-Well... if y-you're okay still Standing," she replied at length, wiping her eyes again, "I-I guess I'll be... I'll be okay, too." She grinned sheepishly when Bronnia asked if this had only been her first time, flushing a bit as she began to realize how silly she was being.

"It was just my first time, yeah," she replied, smiling as Feran shifted to crawl into her lap while Puck coiled about her shoulders. "I guess I really do have... a long time, huh? Y-Y'know, my mom... she had to wait until she was almost too old before she finally found her dragon. She rides grey. I-I dunno what I'll get."

She looked at Bronnia then, tilting her head slightly to one side.

"You've Stood a lot, right? What... what kind of dragon do you think you'll get? I mean--I don't really care what I get, but... but I'd like ta think I'll either get a grey like mom or... or maybe one of those new little, um... graphites? Right? The little shiny ones. I think they're really cute. Maybe... maybe a green would be nice, too."

Bronnia smiled broadly down at Haely when she noticed the quick change of demeanor that the younger Candidate displayed. “That’s the spirit!” She encouraged the girl further, adding an airborne thrust of her fist to accentuate her point.

“See, it’s nothing to be ashamed of,” Bronnia reiterated her earlier sentiment, “there are many like you are right now. For now, disappointed, but there’s a lot of future out there, and it’s very bright!” If she wasn’t so devoted to cheering Haelyea up and making her feel better about herself, Bronnia might have chuckled about how cheesy she sounded. As it was, she felt that she was saying the right things that Haely not only wanted to hear, but needed to hear. Words of reassurance, the kind that wipe away woe and uncertainty with the clarion call of a brighter future.

When presented with a question that seemed to be on the lips of many young Candidates, Bronnia merely shrugged. “I have stood for… oh shards, at least three Turns now. I won’t lie, I’ve never really given it all that much thought. There’s something to like in every color. Those graphites are speedy and agile little buggers, that’s for sure, as are the blacks, blues, and greens. I sometimes wonder what it would be like to Impress a Queen of some sort… I imagine it’s pretty wild.” Bronnia then leaned closer again, her voice hushed as if in a conspiratorial whisper, “between you and me, if I had to somehow take a guess, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if a big ol’ sturdy grey or brown picked me. I mean, I like the garnets and golds and such, they’re pretty and their presence is alluring, but I refuse to let myself get too caught up in such fantasies… not a lot of Queens to go around, after all!”

Haely grinned as Bronnia explained how bright the future was, wiping the tears away from her eyes as she let herself be consoled by the older Candidate. After all, if Bronnia had hope after Standing a few times and getting left behind, Haely could certainly survive being left Standing once!

"Yeah? I-I guess you're right," she replied, hugging Feran as the gold let out a happy little trill and licked the salt tears from her cheeks. The girl listened while Bronnia talked about the joys to be found in every color of dragon, and all the potential that went along with each; Haely smiled at this, glad to have found another lover of dragons--no matter what the color--in this kind girl that had taken time out of her day to comfort her.

She giggled as the talk turned to queens, and she kissed Feran's little head as the gold snuggled into her.

"I think I wouldn't want a Queen," Haely replied, grinning. "I've got enough Queen here with Feran--I don't think I need two of 'em. Plus, I, um... I don't think I'd be a very good Weyrwoman. All that stuff sounds really boring, like sitting around and going to meetings and talking with Holders and stuff. I'd rather be out climbing and exploring and studying and learning things instead of--of sitting around and talking about who gets what and who owes this and who did that."

She crinkled her nose and shook her head.

"Nope. Nope, nope. Definitely not for me. Besides, people didn't like me much when I was in the creche. I've made a lot of new friends, but I, um... I think I'd rather stay away from people like the mean kids in the creche. And I'd have to deal with people like that a lot if I got a Queen."

She smiled, then, looking at Bronnia with an attitude much improved from when the girl had first walked in.

"I think you'd be great on a grey or a brown! My mama rides a grey, and she's a very good Rider. Browns and greys are very nice colors, too. I think they're very pretty, even without being shiny."

Bronnia just smiled at the girl as she seemed to pick herself up, hugging her pretty firelizard in the process. Although she didn’t say so out loud, for fear of sounding like an overexuberant crechemother, Bronnia couldn’t help but think about just how adorable Haelyea was! Heh, maybe that’s what she could do if she didn’t Impress ever. Bronnia, the creche worker. Yeah, that sounded very cute, though not as cute as a baby dragon to call her very own, but cute nonetheless!

“Aye, your Feran does seem like quite the handful of Queen for just one person. Wouldn’t want to overload yourself with Queenliness!” Bronnia said with an amused giggle. “And yeah, all that stuff sounds quite boring. I mean, I guess if a Gold or a Garnet decided that they wanted me, I’d just have to put up with it, y’know, for them. If i don’t end up on a Queen, I certainly won’t envy the work of the Queenriders!”

Bronnia raised an eyebrow. “People didn’t like you in the creche?” She asked with incredulity before shaking her head. “Brats, all of them. Sometimes, the creche was no fun at all! I’m glad I escaped to Candidacy as soon as I was able to!”

“Ooh, your momma’s a dragonrider too? My mum rides a pretty little green,” Bronnia said with a smile. “And I have seen some very pretty browns and greys strutting through the Weyr, too. Some very solid, sturdy ones! I’d love a dependable dragon like that.” She then turned the conversation back to Haely. “What about you, Haely? What do you think is your perfect dragon?”

Haely nodded sagely as Bronnia said she wouldn't be too terribly upset if a Queen dragon passed her up. All that work, just sitting around all day, listening to people complain and not getting to go enjoy the sunshine or climb up cliff walls or fly wherever you wanted, whenever you wanted? Definitely not the life for her! She then shifted awkwardly when the conversation turned briefly to her time in the creche, hugging on Feran as the gold made herself cozy.

"Yeah... I guess some of it was my fault. But, I mean, I couldn't help telling them when they were wrong! And I had a firelizard, so I knew what I was talking about, and nobody ever wanted to listen. They said I was weird," she complained, brow furrowing sullenly. "I wasn't weird. They were weird. But, um... yeah, Candidates have been a lot nicer to me than the other Weyrbrats."

Haely grinned again when Bronnia mentioned her mother was a greenrider. It was always nice to meet someone else who had been born and raised in the Weyr, especially one who also had a dragonriding mother! When she was asked which sort of dragon she'd prefer, however, she waffled a bit.

"Umm... I dunno, really. A nice one, for sure! Not a mean one like my mom's grey--I mean, she can be very nice when she wants to be, but she never talks to anyone but my mom and she seems like this great big beast when she's in a mood. Not a proper dragon at all," she rambled, idly stroking Feran's little head as Puck hopped over to get his share of the affection. "My perfect dragon'd get along with my lizards, too. Like a big brother or sister for 'em, even though they'd be younger'n either of 'em. My lizards are my best friends, y'know? Would be really sad if my dragon didn't like 'em."

She frowned at the thought. Would that be possible? Would a lizard-hating dragon pick her when it knew how much she loved her firelizards? What if she had to give them up or send them away? Oh, that was a dreadful idea! Better not to Impress at all than to have a dragon that made her shoo away her best friends!

Bronnia giggled gently when the younger girl insisted that she had been right and the other Weyrbrats had been absolutely wrong about so many things! "Yeah, I had my share of arguments with other kids as well when I was younger. I couldn't help it, they could just be so wrong!" The girl said, emphasizing with Haelyea absolutely. "As I said, there is a reason I left that place as soon as I was able. Some brats stay until they're a little older, and they're usually the sort I got sick of dealing with. I could have picked a craft too... maybe I'll try one, just so I have something in case a dragon doesn't choose me... but I'm pretty sure a dragon will choose me, so in that case it'd just be nice to have extra skills!" Bronnia had never really thought about that before, and briefly she wondered if she could sit in on some basic dragonhealing lessons. If she did that, she could also keep an eye on her little brother... though maybe not, lest she become too stifling of a presence, as she couldn't help but be protective of the boy.

"Oh jeez, I can't even imagine Impressing to a grumpy dragon like that! Though, if Impression is every bit as wonderful as mum says it is... I guess it wouldn't really matter what my dragon was like, because I would be unable to think of them as anything other than perfect. That's how momma always describes it, just how perfect her pretty green is for her. I think they have fairly different personalities, too, and yet they call each other perfect for each other." Bronnia grinned, "Well, your dragon would have to get used to your firelizards if they want you, whether they like it or not! Your firelizards are part of everything!"

She smiled, "maybe you should talk to your momma more, if you can find time, just so she can tell you all about what Impression was like. I've heard that same story from my mom many times, but it never gets old. It's amazing, how clearly she remembers that moment."
