Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Southern was all people were talking about, at least on days where thread didn't fall. It was exciting, but also sort of distant to Mie. Having fresh supplies of food would be appreciated, and there was a lot of potential learning to be done, but the chances of the brown rider volunteering for an expedition or (faranth forbid) agreeing to move there permanently, were next to zero. He liked the familiarity of Vaioa, the predictability now that the bandits were gone, it was all he wanted from life (other then maybe a partner someday). Eybith wanted to see what all the dragons who had made the trip were talking about, but they'd both seen the various injuries that had resulted from the wild encounters, and Mie had gotten his brown to agree to wait until a more civilized structure had been built.

The man still wanted to contribute though, so he found a wholly different strategy. If Southern had been lush and healthy all this time surely someone had made notes of it before, even if it was from a ship wreck or other unfortunate events. Perhaps they hadn't even realized where they'd landed. It was the kind of quest Mie was good at, involving hunting through old records and using the contacts he'd accidentally cultivated over the past two turns at other weyrs to gain access to the oldest of hides.

Today he was at Benden, a mildly uncomfortable situation as not all Benden riders liked Vaioa's recent activity, and keeping Southern secret was critical at the moment, but everyone knew Benden was one of the oldest weyrs so it had oodles more information stored within. He'd been reading for candlemarks while Eybith lounged outside.

“Mmm.” The rider rubbed his eyes and glanced wearily at the two piles beside him. One was a foot taller then the other, and sadly that was not the pile he'd already been through. “I could use food. But...” He'd been working on this search specifically for over a month and had found little to nothing. There was the occasional reference to Pern being larger then the Northern continent, but that wasn't helpful.

Are we staying overnight? You realize evening is well under way. I'd swear I can see the moons, and they're equally surprised we're still here. Eybith cut into his thoughts, and Mie sighed. Another day of no one wanting to talk to you?

Some would but their riders were less happy about it. They're being quite pretentious. You'd think we're at Fort instead.

You know things are tense, between the exiling and us taking in all the graphites and blacks from Fort. They might want to stay out of it entirely, and pretending we don't exist is efficient. Mie scanned the next hide, picking out the clearly visible words and trying to use them to decipher the more faded text. This one seemed to be about agriculture, mentions of soil state and crop growth, grubs and insect populations. Useful for not for him.

He gently placed it into the smaller pile and slide the next one before him. The motion kicked up clouds of dirt which tickled his nose, and he could only imagine that he half-resembled a giant dust pile by now. This one had a similar color to the last, maybe from the time time period, though half of these didn't have dates marked clearly on the pages (which he'd dare call a criminal offense to record keeping). “Hatching, gold successfully impressed... hunting squad encountered trouble...” Mie paused, and squinted at the next few lines, switching to silent reading as his pulse picked up. There was a detailed description of the encounter, along with a wholly unfamiliar word. Striped hides, vicious temperaments, larger then a man, does that sound like what the whers encountered?

Eybith considered the mental imagery that had been spread around the weyr. It was harder to receive clear pictures from whers, but that hadn't stopped the gossip chain from doing its best to mesh the various tales together into something complete. I'm not sure, but it doesn't sound like anything I've seen here. Might be worth taking back home.

I'm not stealing this!

Then what are we doing here? It'll do us more good then it's doing them, sitting back here gathering more spinners. Eybith was right in that...Mie rolled up the hide and stuck it under his jacket before he could second guess his decision, and hoped the records room keeper on duty didn't notice the nervousness of his goodbye wave or the unusually fast speed of his steps. He didn't make a good thief.

They gained daylight when they went Between, much to Mie's relief. While this was important that didn't mean he was eager to burst into the Weyrleader's office after dinner and find he was interrupting something personal. Don't bother stopping elsewhere, just get me straight to S'akh,

Inequith, mine has been at the record halls in Benden all day and we've found something we think you should see. Something about felines.

It seemed that life as a Weyrleader had exactly one constant, and that was: the moment a Weyrleader gets comfortable with the steaming mound of runner's shaffit he gets confronted with, a second mound will be promptly deposited so as to prevent him from resting upon his laurels. How could he have known that his young bronze would have dragged him in to one of the most exciting times for all of Pern when he chased that queen and caught her?

Still, in his own masochistic sort of way, he was glad for it. When and where else could he have had such an opportunity to make an impact on the world in which he was living? So it was that, when Inequith relayed the message from Mie the brownrider, S'akh merely quirked an inquisitive brow and promptly made his way to his Weyrledge.

I wonder what's so important, he mused, squinting up toward the sky as Inequith raised up onto his massive haunches and sat as a tall bronze beacon to the Weyrleader's ledge.

I do hope a 'feline' is something edible, Inequith responded, eyes whirling with amusement. And not a tunnelsnake. If I never see a tunnelsnake ever again, it shall surely be too soon!

Please, S'akh replied, rolling his eyes with a chuckle. You'll hardly remember it in a halfturn. Think of poor me, who will be scarred for life.

Oh, I should think I shall remember those snakes for a very long time. Oh! Oh, here they come! Down here, Eybith! I have made plenty of room for you, I hope, the bronze called, wings flapping in greeting as he ambled backward a bit to provide the brown with ample landing space.

The Weyrleader raised a hand in greeting, curiosity written plainly across his features as he watched the brown make his way in. Felines... he wondered which of the fresh hells they had encountered on that sharding beachside paradise had earned that strange name.

Eybith backwinged onto the ledge, bowing his neck gratefully to the bronze, both out of respect and no small delight in being home. More than enough, thank you. And thank you for humoring us at this hour. Mie also nodded to Inequith, with a polite “Good Evening” before hurrying inside. He stopped to catch the breath excitement had robbed him of, and drew the hide from under his jacket. Despite Eybith's disapproval at his lack of pleasantries, the rider wanted to launch straight into business.

“Good evening Weyrleader. Um. You probably wouldn’t know, but I’ve been searching all the records halls I could access for information about the south, anything that could help, and I found this at Benden. It has some interesting information in it, very old, but surprisingly well preserved. I didn’t steal it though! I mean, technically I did, but I plan to return it once we copy all the information.” He paused to get his thoughts back on track. Should he have brought the hides from around it too? Those could be fetched later perhaps. Now was not the time for that.

Mie laid the hide on S’akh’s desk, reflexively smoothing down the corners. “It looks to be a record of noteworthy events in a sevenday. First there's an overview of a hatching, a couple names changing rank, but down at the bottom there’s an account of a hunting party who encounter some large predators. I think it might be pertinent to whatever attacked one of the wher troops during their exploration.” Mie pointed to the appropriate section, then stepped back to let S’akh examine his find, hoping the weyrleader found it as interesting as he had. He’d read over the paragraph multiple times and come to the same conclusion each time. Anxious for someone to corroborate his thoughts, he read the text up-side down while he waited for the other man to finish.

'The fourth wing brought back six fine furs this week, striped and velveteen, which will be fought over. The wing was hunting for large game when a pride of felines ambushed them at rest, and attempted to separate the smaller greens from the rest of the group. Robiyth’s left wing was severely maimed during the initial strike. T’yas was leading at the time and retaliated; several felines were brought down, and more injured. The largest dead was the size of a bronze wher. There were also several smaller males, and a pregnant female. There have been an unusual number of encounters with this particular pride recently, I speculate the presence of cubs may be related. Hunting the pride without the felines instigating has become a challenge though, riders report that they may have learned our normal tracking techniques, and how to avoid being found with them.'

From there, Mie knew, it trailed off briefly before it reached the end of the page. Short, but tantalizing.
