Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Noette hated winter. She'd always hated winter. At the Smithhall in Telgar, they'd been blistering cold and filled with all kinds of nasty things like ice and snow and more ice. Machines didn't like to work in the cold. Ice and grit clogged up gears and axles and ball bearings, and only constant movement kept any lubes and oils from congealing. Sometimes not even then.

The milder winter in Vaioa was just as bad for different reasons. Rather than snow there was rain, which meant there was mud instead of ice. On the coldest mornings, that mud turned into an icy slush. An icy slush she now had to walk through. Muttering curses under her breath, Noette huddled in her jacket and tried to think warm thoughts. Hot klah (tasted terrible), fresh baking (shards, now she was hungry), a hearthfire (nope, nope, no fires, fires were bad things to avoid at all costs)...but nothing helped. Miserably, Noette found her way through the evening gloom toward the wherhandler quarters. Even Gadget and Gizmo were uncharacteristically silent as they huddled as close to her hood as possible to avoid the wind.

The tunnels were a welcome relief, from the wind and wet if not the cold. Noette shivered and let her hood fall back. Now. She was supposed to go somewhere. "Where am I going..." she asked herself as she headed down the tunnels. "Reeks down here, shards." Gizmo churred an agreement despite having next to no sense of smell. His Noette was likely imagining things again, and Gizmo had long ago learned to just go with it. "Where is that chute? He said it would be the third hall on the left...or was it right? Eh, left it is."

Since she'd repaired the dumbwaiter in the hold proper, she'd been tasked with checking all of them. Apparently there was one in the wherhandler dens that hadn't been used in so long that no one seemed to really know where it was.

Which was exactly why Noette started talking to the walls.

"Where oh where has the crawlspace gone..." she sing-songed under her breath, searching the stone for the right door. "You'd be little...only about two feet tall. Playing hide and seek tonight? I bet your big brothers know where you are." And with that logic, she knocked on one of the handler's doors, fully intent on asking it (the door, of course) where the crawlspace entry was.

Things were quiet in the realm of Tali and Talsk. Flits were cuddled and huddled in the blankets while their owner dozed on the bed curled around their pile. Winter days of Vaioa weren't all that 'cold', just mucky and muddy at times. But at night, even a desert could get downright chilly. They'd all been awake since a bit before Wherdawn doing some errands before the others woke. Working as a form of messenger gave Tali some odd candlemarks to work but she actually enjoyed it. Kept her out of the way of the other handlers. At that moment she was catching up on her sleep and Talsk was wide awake and guarding the room.

And so very bored.

Talsk had started playing with some pebbles on the floor. Trying to get them into a little pile but his big nose and large claws weren't doing it quite right. After the sixth attempt he gave up and just stared at one of the walls waiting for Tali to wake up. Then...he heard voices. Well...one voice. A knock on the door! Oh! A visitor! He fumbled to his feet and went to the door but stopped just in front of it. He wasn't allowed to let people in unless Tali said it was ok. So all he could do was talk through it. Quietly.

Hi-lo? Who be it? What need? He said reaching out to the mind he knew was behind the door. Maybe it would be a new friend! Tali hadn't made any new ones in a very long time. Talsk believed she was a bit lonely but Tali always said she was just fine alone. The brown didn't believe her. There were times he'd caught her watching groups of friends laughing and talking and feeling sad about it. He wasn't stupid. He knew what lonely felt like. But first...he probably needed to double check. Is friend? Or bad persons? Bad persons go away! No hurt Tals!

(ooc: I am SO sorry this took so long! And so short! Life just kind of got away with me!)

Part of Noette expected the normal response to knocking on a door. Someone would come answer it, and then she could get the answer from someone more intelligent than several slats of wood and a few nails. What she didn't expect was the door to actually answer her.

"Maybe it's the strong silent type," she muttered to herself and was about to step away. A voice stopped her, and even Noette stared at the door. She hadn't actually expected to get an answer from the wood, but now that she had... She stepped close to it again, leaning her ear against it.

"Tal is your name?" she asked the door first. Might as well be polite and start with introductions, though she really did have a job to do. "I'm Noette. A smith. I don't think I'm a bad person, but I know a few craftsmen who think I'm odd. Said it to my face, too. Isn't that the rudest thing?"

Gizmo chirped from her shoulder, and Gadget gently reminded her that they were looking for something that neither flit had managed to find. Perhaps the crawlspace had been plastered over or blocked off somehow. "Oh, I'm looking for a crawlspace, a door about a third your size. Seen anything like that around?"

Tal no my name. Tal my Tali name. He sounded a bit like he was laughing at the mix-up and tilted his head hearing the name. Nooooooette? What smith? Mine call odd too. No care. Know she odd. Odd is good. Me thinks. This was was almost fun! Talking to a strange voice on the other side of the door. They seemed nice enough, maybe he could just let them in for a bit. See their face. Tali wouldn't mind that right? Oh! They were talking again.

Crawly...space? Is door? Talsk had heard that word before too. Had it been his Tali? Yes! It was! He remembered the word now! Just barely. Is small? Has laaatchies? Me know where! Mine use to sneak-sneak. No be seen. Talk felt excited! He could show them the thing and they'd be happy about the thing and be his friend! And Tali's friend! He had to wake her...he couldn't really remember the exact place of it. I wake Tals! We help! TAAAAAAAAL! TAAAAAAAAAALI! Wakes up! Ups ups! He boomed through their link and it jerked Tali awake making her fall from the bed with a yelp and a loud thud. Ooooops...Sorry.

"Nnng...What...why am I being woken up?" Tali groaned and cringed as her flits took to screeching their displeasure in being shaken from their restful slumber in such a loud manner. Talsk's apology got a tired glare before he started nuzzling her face. "Ugh...I'm up...what is it?"

Help! Voice say need help. Crawlyspace need find. You knows where is? Yes? Talsk looked up at her as she stood looking so excited and hopeful. Thankfully Tali didn't have to disappoint him. She looked at the door then back at him before moving closer and talking cautiously.

"Um...hello? Sum'un' needs help?" Talsk bumped the back of her legs and she sighed. Reaching out she opened the door enough to stick her head out to look. "Oh...hi."

Well, this was such a lovely conversation! Noette was absolutely thrilled with how it was going. The door sounded like he--it?--knew where the crawlspace was that the smith needed to find. Gadget shook his head for some reason, but Gizmo was much more interested in the conversation. He leaned forward, claws digging into Noette's shirt to keep his balance.

"Yes! Yes, a crawlspace is like a door. Small latches," she confirmed excitedly, smiling now that her nameless wooden friend knew where she needed to go. Since Tal was not the door's name, it must be the person inside. Wait, so someone else could talk to the doors? Nope, Noette wasn't the only odd one in the Hold then. Perhaps she should try finding this Tali sometime...

At least the door was loudly waking up whomever was behind it.

When the door did finally crack open, Noette was still grinning, still very happy that she'd found someone who might know where a sharding crawlspace was. The faster she got the job done, the better, in her mind. Sharding crawlspaces. She hated working in them. No way to get proper leverage, and shells knew what lurked in the dark corners and behind beams.

"Yes, hi," Noette said over both of her flits' peeping their own greetings. "I've just had a lovely conversation with your door about the location of a crawlspace I need to access, said someone named Tali might know where it is. Do you knew where I could find a Tali?"

Talsk stood behind Tali shushing the screeching firelizards the best he could. They landed on him and nipped at his back and head as punishment. Not enough to really hurt, but enough to get their point across. While he kept them busy Tali was at the door with her head sticking out and staring at the person outside their room. She'd seen them before. Like many people in the Hold she knew of them, but didn't know them. One of many faces she'd seen and didn't dare interact with. The grinning face didn't look all that scary but Tali was cautious all the same.

"Conversation with...my door...?" Tali raised a brow in confusion before it clicked what she was talking about. Talsk had been talking to them through the door. But...most people would be smart enough to know that a 'door' couldn't really talk to you. That thought made Tali wonder if something was wrong with the stranger. Yet, who was she to judge? Tali thought herself as odd as odd could be. So what if someone else was a bit off kilter? She opened the door a little wider and looked slightly down at the girl. There was only a bit of a height difference. Possibly only three inches or so. Next thing Tali noticed was the hair. Another redhead, just like her. "I am Tali. The one you talked to is my wher. Talsk."

Upon hearing his name mentioned the brown waddled his way over and stuck his head between Tali's legs to look at the knew friend. He wuffed at her and his eyes swirled bright blue.

HI HI HI HI! Oh sorry! Did no mean to shout! Happy to meet!
