Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

There was no denying it. With a couple Wings of dragons gone South to explore, Rae felt entirely excluded. Not that she personally was snubbed, no. None of the candidates were allowed to attend the expedition. Something about being too dangerous or some such nonsense. True, they had no idea what they'd find, but they were having am adventure! The first to see a new continent and explore its unmapped shores and lands. A continent thought dead teaming with life!

What Rae wouldn't have given to be there.

Instead, she was stuck in the Barracks. Staring at her ceiling. Not for the first time, either. Amazing there weren't holes from how often she'd watched the pale orange stone. With a sigh, Rae rolled to sit, and Jay and Trill promptly hopped onto her thighs. The blue flit trilled comfort while Trill begged for attention.

"Think anyone else can sleep tonight?" she asked the two. Jay tilted his head and chirped. Trill peeped but shook her wings out, clearly uninterested in her beloved's dilemma. "Yeah, probably not. Who can sleep with whole Wings out exploring?" Again Jay peeped but shrugged as well, climbing to Rae's shoulder and nuzzling under her hair. Trill curled up by Rae's stomach and churned while Rae rubbed her back.

"Well, might as well do something if I can't sleep," she decided and consciously ignored the thought of a redheaded copperrider who hadn't gone South. Instead, she slipped off her bunk, caught Trill before the green fell, and grabbed her violin. "How about a little night music, huh?"

Jay whistled happily, flaring his wings and flicking his tail over Rae's shoulder. She tossed it back as Trill decided she'd rather sleep. Jay churred at her and she snorted right back before curling up on Rae's pillow. Oh well. Her loss.

The common room was fairly quiet at this candlemark. Almost one candlemark until curfew yet still plenty of time to get a bit of playing in. Maybe attract a few people too. Conversation wouldn't be unwelcome certainly! Finding a spot on a couch by a window (not that there was much of a view of the night-dark Bowl), Rae rosened her bow and quickly tightened and tuned her strings.

Then she was off. A spritely little melody danced from her strings and fingers and soon enough Jay was humming and bobbing along.

Zahrai suspected the man at the gather had been lying about the flit egg she’d spent a truly minimal amount of marks on. About its age, more specifically. It had been several sevendays since the gather and the egg had rested in its bowl of warm sand, slowly hardening, occasionally twitching, but the one thing it hadn’t done was hatch. Not even a crack! If the eggs were all from the same queen’s clutch, as he’d claimed, then this poor, tiny egg should have already produced its firelizard fruit. The candidate eyed her purchase with skepticism. If it wasn’t for the rare piece of movement she’d have sworn it was a dud.

She prodded it gently, then traced a gentle brown wave that split the standard ivory shell tones. It would be a shame if this venture was for naught. Who knew when she’d find another clutch, or have the marks to spend on one. There’d been plenty of green laid eggs spread around, but everyone knew what happened with green clutches. Namely, almost the same thing as was happening with this egg.

Maybe there was some way to inspire hatching? Did another flit have to…talk to it or something? Dragons did that humming thing right? Maybe that was actually a necessary part of the eggs? It was a good a thought as any, and probably her last hope for getting this baby out of its fetal home. She grimaced. Another sevenday and she’d crack the sharding thing open herself! Focused on her problem as she was, it took several minutes before she heard the music drifting in from the common room. Thinking of welcoming songs…

Zahrai carefully traversed the hall between her room and the candidate common grounds, treasure cradled in both hands. She'd learned that candidates came from all crafts and holds, but it was still a little remarkable hearing one of their rank play with skill. She listened from a distance until the older candidate finished her piece, at which she point she approached with a smile and an appreciative nod. No applause though, instead she kept her posture perfectly controlled until she could set her egg on a nearby table.

"So were you a Harper?" She casually asked, voice relaxed but peripherally keeping an eye on the swaying blue. "Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt. But being out here is much better then cooped up in there."

It wasn't often that Rae decided to play in the barracks. With the hectic and busy schedule candidates kept, the music, even in the evenings, wasn't welcomed by those who would rather collapse in their bunks. Perhaps she should try for more sedate melodies this late in the evening. Her next one would be slower, she decided.

Jay hummed along with his beloved's lively tune, flitting off and taking a perch on the windowsill. He knew better than to try curling on Rae's shoulder while she played. The young woman tended to move too much to be a comfortable perch. Tonight was no different, though the quiet candlemark did dampen her usual energy. She was trying to be considerate, after all.

Apparently she'd drawn someone's attention, though, because Rae noticed someone approaching from her periphery. They could easily be heading for the door--to where was their business, though Rae could think of a couple places she'd go at this time of night--so she didn't immediately stop. Only when the presence was still there at the end of her melody did Rae turn her head and smile warmly at her fellow candidate. Since she was still waiting...

And talking.

"That's why I'm playing out here," Rae agreed, setting her instrument in her lap and lightly plucking a couple strings, fingers still playing across the fretboard aimlessly. "My room was boring, and this place could use some brightening up I thought. Yes, I was a Harper, but I can't completely give it up," she shrugged good naturedly. "I'm Rae, by the way. You were Searched around the same time I was, right? Just before Cirseth's clutch?"

Jay hummed brightly, noticing that the other woman was carrying something. He hopped off the sill and to Rae's knee before stretching out as much as he could to see. Was that...was that an egg? Jay trilled happily, and Rae rubbed his spine to soothe him.

Zahrai gave a humored smile at the girl's answer. Someone who was talented at their craft being here struck her as odd. Wasn't the weyr where people with no where else to go went? Talented (and pretty) harpers were needed everywhere. Maybe she had something else she was running from. None of her business, but it was interesting to scope out what kind of people her fellows were composed of. "A little after, I think. Those eggs had been shelled for a day or two when I arrived." She shrugged, nonplussed by what most would call bad timing. "No big deal, far as I'm concerned. They say there's always more." Her smile changed to something less dismissive and more appreciative. "You're pretty good, you know. You should play in here more, give the place a little life." If this harper-candidate was smart she'd even take requests (and the tips that would go along with them). But that was hasty.

She plopped into a chair across from the table, letting some of the stress flow from her shoulders as both of the pair were non-threatening upon first and second impressions. If there was any credit she'd give Vaioa it was that it had a significantly less threatening atmosphere then most of the places she'd lived. Though part of that might have been because of her family. They'd been the focus of a lot of negativity, and now that she'd left the last place who'd been aware of it all not having a reputation was almost... freeing.

The other candidate's flit made a high pitched noise, and Zahrai jumped in surprise. "Wha-" And then she noticed where it was looking. "Oh, yeah, my egg?" She rolled her eyes as she continued. "Got it a few sevendays ago at the gather, hard as stone by now, but the stupid thing doesn't want to hatch. So I'm toting it around and hoping it wakes up." As if it knew they were speaking of it the egg gave a tiny twitch. "Is he friendly?" The red head gestured at the other girl's blue. "Could he give, I don't know, his opinion on if it's any good?"
