Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Too Cool for Feasts [Tag: Fy'kor/Avimoth]; Early Winter 1264, During Agate Feast

Hatching feasts were grand events. Toray remembered every one that she had ever attended. The dancing, the beautiful dresses, the music... The "after parties" in her weyr, after Itnalath had grown old enough to handle such things. Her thoughts were melancholy, yet strangely bittersweet, as she allowed the music that drifted up from the dining hall's open doors to carry her back into the past. Closing her eyes, the woman leaned back into the warm solidness of Itnalath's shoulder. She did not sit too close to the edge of the green's ledge, for reasons that she refused to think of in that moment. All she wanted to do was bask in warm memories and let the music take her to better times.

You could always go down and celebrate with them, Itnalath suggested, using the same wheedling tone as she had when she had tried--and failed--to persuade her rider to attend Cirseth's clutch's Hatching earlier in the day. Toray was having a Bad Day, something that Itnalath could understand. Her back ached where it could still feel, thanks to the rain, and with the cancellation of drills, she had not even gotten out of bed until early afternoon. As was her custom, the drudge that brought her her meals had dropped off breakfast and lunch, but the food went largely untouched. Toray ate what could not be sent back to the kitchens, and everything else was carefully wrapped and left for the drudge to take back, along with an apologetic note.

Dinner never came, and Toray understood. The kind drudge had likely been caught up in the feast's preparations, and naturally she would have forgotten about her. The greenrider would still pay her the full sevenday's worth of tips. She was not too hungry, anyway. Which she used as her default excuse to not go to the feast. I am not hungry. Why would I go?

To have fun? Maybe I can annoy Issafeth a little to entertain you. It had been quite some time since that encounter with the fishing weyrlingpair. That Itnalath remembered it at all showed the strength of her dislike for the younger green.

The offer wrung a chuckle from Toray, and she sighed longingly as she gazed down at the Weyrbowl far below. The doors of the dining hall were wide open, but with her one eye, she could not clearly see into the vast cavern. There were definitely people entering it, though, and she was sure they would have a great time. I wonder if Torial is there with his friends. Precious boy. His nameday was coming up soon. Toray knew that she would have to send him a gift. She would have preferred to give it to him in person, but...Faranth, she had not seen him since...she had been altered. Faranth, how she missed his precious face, though...

A soft nuzzle interrupted her thoughts, but she did not look up at Itnalath. She couldn't, not as tears prickled at her eye. Sniffling, she tugged a handkerchief out of her skirt pocket and dabbed the tears away. Don't say it. I know, this is pathetic.

It is, Itnalath quipped, not ceasing in her nuzzling. She gazed out over the 'Bowl with worried yellow eyes, using her tail to pull her rider closer to her. Across the 'Bowl, she met the eyes of a familiar blue face, and a draconic smile lifted her features. Carefully concealing the action from Toray, who was still wallowing, Itnalath reached out to her blue clutch brother. Avimoth, dearest. Is your Fy'kor at the feast? Toray has not eaten supper yet, and we don't feel like leaving our weyr today. Might Fy'kor come up with a meal? Surely he would not refuse her, not when she asked so sweetly!

Hatching feasts were absolutely amazing. She had loved every feast she had attended, which were most of them...even at hatching feasts where she did not bring her dragon in tow. Fy loved the grand music, dancing, and the food-not to mention drinks-were always nice. The young woman took a sip of her wine, chatting up one of her fellow wingrider in the process.

Avimoth sat outside, watching the new weyrlings stroll inside to introduce their new bondeds to their friends. Hatching feasts he, too, liked. This was mostly because he was curious about what they were like, or wanted a closer look. The music also interested him, it was so, so pretty! He watched the new garnetpair-the one who had impressed on the stands-enter the kitchens.

Oh, That garnet is pretty! Did you see that blue, too? He is bound to be a strong dragon. Fy, there's that brown that hurt that one candidate!

The bluerider rolled her eyes at her dragon's musings, grabbing a small fruit from a platter. All of them had to be good dragonriders when they graduated. Might have to talk to one of them later. She bit into her fruit, enjoying the sour taste. Man, she was hungry. A small frown creased her lips as she watched her previous companion go. At once, the searchrider got up, eyes scanning the crowd to search for someone to talk to. Maybe one of them wanted to dance?

You are a wonderful dancer, I'm sure someone will be happy to dance with you.

Avimoth watched the last of the weyrlings enter, looking over his shoulder as if there were more dragonets to greet. Just twelve. Twelve wonderful dragons and their new-found riders. He eyed the dragonrider's weyrs, spotting Itnalath looking at him. His blue eyes whirled green, even faster when his sister asked him for a favor. He forwarded this to his rider, cheerfully.

'Yeah, didn't expect her to come down. Gimme a sec, will ya?'

What's going on?

Kor peered through the crowd, looking at a very large wherry with magnificent colors. Oh, sweet! Couldn't wait to see what the Southern Continent held, if what these holders were saying was true. If these fiesty-looking wherry creatures weren't tameable, they were always food.

'Holders showed up with a colorful death beast. The holders people thought capsized apparently discovered the Southern Continent. Whatever.' With that said, she moved to quickly grab a wide variety of foods, sweet fruits, meatrolls, whatever she could hold. The bluerider careened outside, glaring at the people who gave her odd looks. She could feel happy and excited thoughts from her dragon, though she couldn't figure out if it was from the majestic furry thing, or the fact that they were going to visit Itnalath and Toray.

I'm not sure she needed that much food, Fymine! I'm sure she'll appreciate it, though. You ready?

Fy'kor steadied herself onto the straps, instantly glad she had not worn something dressy. A nice blouse and pants that juuust barely matched. 'Ready to make sure Toray doesn't starve herself when you are! Just, uh, take me to her ledge. Doubt she'd let me in her weyr even if I had food on me.'

Avimoth answered her question by opening his dark blue wings, lifting himself into the sky with a strong leap, aiming himself towards his sister's ledge as quick and as graceful as he could manage. The food weighed him down little, and he clambered onto the green's ledge rather softly.

Sorry to intrude! Mine brought food, though. I wanted to make sure you two were alright. I guess I could leave if you want. the blue tried to distance himself as far as he could from the pair, didn't want to crowd them. He folded his wings once Fy'kor slid off of his shoulder, nosing her forward gently once she managed to grab all of the food without, somehow, dropping it.

"'ey there. You aren't going to starve yourself on my watch! Didn't know what you were in the mood for, so I grabbed a bunch of fruit and some meatrolls...and heya Nala, what's up?" The young searchrider didn't seem to care too much that she had casually intruded on her friend's space, taking a few steps toward Itnalath. Didn't want to crowd her friend, but she was going to eat this or Fy was going to shove it all into her mouth.

That won't work..that'll make her sick! Put it on the table and let her take what she wants...and..

Kor tuned out of her dragon's suggestions, stumbling backwards slightly and watching a fruit roll onto the floor. Oh, no. An amused smile found her face nonetheless. "So, uh, mind if I stay and we can talk...or you can take some of this food off of my hands..."

I hope she grabbed enough food for you, Toray. How have you been feeling, lately? I hope you have been just as well as we have! Maybe, if the blue could sound a bit less like a stranger, he wouldn't scare his friend so much...

Toray, dear, will you go get some oil? Itnalath asked, affecting a whine and making the skin on her bad shoulder twitch just so. It was one of the many tricks she had perfected over the Turns. At first, they had been to get what she wanted. These days, they were mostly employed to get Toray to do anything. She gave her rider her best impression of innocent hatchling eyes, and Toray graced her with a small smile. The woman sensed that something was up--she felt no itching from her dragon--but she figured Itnalath was just trying to make her cheer up.

Of course, she murmured, deciding to play along. Rising stiffly, she limped inside to fetch one of the oil pots and a soft rag. Itnalath mentally congratulated herself, standing as well. She retreated into her weyr to give Avimoth enough room to land, strategically using her body to block the outside world from her rider's view. Already, she could see Avimoth coming. Such a sweet, kind blue, rushing to their aid like that. Itnalath warbled softly to him, forgetting the whole point of making the bluepair's arrival a surprise.

"What's wrong?" Toray asked quickly, rushing back to her green's side with an oil pot in hand. She squeezed between Itnalath's side and the wall, stopping to stand beside the green's stiff foreleg. She had mistaken the green's warble for a sound of impatience, or worse, pain. Already, her eye was scanning the scarred green flesh for any sign of...anything. And then she heard the wingbeats, far too close to her ledge to simply be a dragon passing over. A horrible feeling of trepidation and suspicion knotted her stomach, and she slowly turned around. Avimoth.

Of course I don't mind, Avimoth, Itnalath purred, stretching her neck forward to touch noses with her favorite blue. If he were any other blue, she would never have allowed him on her ledge, but Avimoth had always been special. He was her little brother. Hello, Fy'kor! Toray, look! They brought you food! Isn't that nice?! Completely pleased with herself, the little green looked down at her rider. Who was...in shock.

Toray's first instinct, as Fy dismounted, was to shrink back into the shadows between Itnalath and the wall. She did not have her wraps on. Her face was exposed. Fy'kor would see...everything. She was mollified somewhat when Fy'kor spoke. That one had always had a heart of gold... All the more reason to spare her. Expression softening in the dark, Toray answered quietly, "That's sweet, Fy. You don't have to stay on our account, though. The feast must be much more fun." Her eyes followed the fruit as it rolled across the floor, and her stomach growled audibly.

In a flash of bright green, Itnalath snapped the fruit up, swallowing it whole. Yum! Toray, you must try this!

Avimoth watched as Itnalath made room for him to land, while blocking out the view from her rider. He could see Toray enter just before he landed, looking for injuries on Itnalath's foreleg. He tried to make his coming there and landing as quiet as possible, but to no avail. Toray looked absolutely terrified. His large eyes whirled yellow for a moment, but quickly back to green as Nala spoke.

The tiny blue reached forward with his neck, his mottled nose brushing against his green sister's nose affectionately. He knew he had other clutchmates, but Itnalath was the only one he checked up on, whether that was because Fy didn't know many of her other classmates or because of another reason, the blue was none too sure. Oh, that is good. Is your leg doing fine..? Now, he wasn't sure if his green sister was actually injured, but there were many ways to find out.

"Well, the feast was fun, buut I don't really feel like flying all the way back down again. Besides, I've got this much food, and you are only one person. Poor Nala might get sick if she ate all of this fruit for you," Honestly, she wasn't too sure of a dragon-even with Itnalath's size-being sick eating small fruits and other things. She also wasn't too sure Toray would eat in the first place if she just left now. "Figured you needed some other company, too,"

Yes, please try the food! You need to eat something..you do like fruits, right?

"Where do you want me to put all of...this? On the table?" Trying to walk somewhere while trying to not drop everything in one's arms was slightly difficult, but nonetheless the bluerider strode into Toray's dining room, checking over her shoulder to see if Toray was following her. "So, uh, How have things been treating you? Things haven't been stiffening up, have they?"

(bleeeeh let me know if I should change anything)

You...were in on this. You tricked me, Toray accused her green, fingers clenching the pot of oil. Honestly, now that the shock of Avimoth's landing had worn off, she realized that she wasn't that surprised. Itnalath was always pulling stunts like this, trying to force her to accept human company. Avimoth and Fy'kor were the green's favorite accomplices, and, admittedly, Toray did feel the slightest bit comfortable around them. But not when they arrived without warning, without even giving her a chance to cover up. She was so exposed. The mobile side of her face twitched.

Itnalath felt no remorse. Yes, her rider was stressed now. But later, as she basked in the company of a clutchmate and friend, she would thank her. The green was greatly optimistic about that. She always knew what was best for everyone, after all. You bet I did! she replied chipperly, for her dear bonded's mind alone. Then, arching her neck proudly, she shook her head at Avimoth. My leg is terribly stiff from the rain, but it does not hurt. I was just distracting Toray so she'd let you land. She can be so terribly dim sometimes.

Toray gazed beseechingly at Fy'kor, trying to mentally urge the other woman to please, please just let her be. Fy herself had said that the feast was fun. I'm just a burden.

Yes. A burden to me when you're all mopey and sad. Go eat! I'm going to cuddle with my brother. With that, Itnalath retreated into her weyr and promptly lay down on her couch, leaving Toray even more exposed than before. Did she feel the slightest bit bad about causing discomfort for her rider? Yes. But it would be worth it in the end. Avimoth! Come, cuddle with me! she demanded imperiously. Answering Avimoth's question for Toray, she added, Of course she likes fruits.

Fy'kor seemed unwilling to leave anytime soon. Toray couldn't help but wonder if the bluerider was only staying to force feed her. Possibly. Probably. She couldn't physically remove the stronger bluerider from her weyr; she could barely throw firestone bags without getting sore, and would never last a whole Fall. Helpless to do anything else, she followed Fy into her weyr, a look of pained resignation on her face. "Table's fine," she mumbled, automatically shielding her face with a hand when she noticed Fy'kor's head moving to glance back at her. "Can...I need to get my wraps. Will you wait here?" She glanced pleadingly at her weyrlinghood friend--who had somehow kept trying to be her friend after everything--through the gaps between her fingers.

Avimoth crooned softly at his sister, who struck a proud pose. Oh, he was so glad that she wasn't hurt. His sister was clever, too, planning something like this so they could pay a visit without being rejected. He sat on his haunches, offering the best draconic smile he could. That is a good thing to hear! Smart of you to distract her like that.

Fy'kor forced a goofy little smile as Toray looked at her searchingly. Nope. Not leaving. The young woman turned her head to watch Itnalath move, leaving Toray in her view.

Avimoth quirked his head at his bright green sister, eyes whirling what was probably the same green color as her hide. He pushed himself onto Itnalath's couch, wriggling in beside his sister and folding his wings to give her extra room. At least he was small, for a blue. His tail twitched with happiness, which showed through in his words.

Yes, of course! I like your company. You are nice, and friendly.

Kor haphazardly dumped all of the food onto Toray's table, turning to Toray, a slight frown coming onto her face as she realized Toray was trying to hide her threadscore scars. She sighed as her friend gave her a pleading face, "I'm the only one here, an' I don't care about your scars, but if it makes you feel any better about having me in the room, go right ahead," Her hand found a redfruit, and she bit into it, "Threadscoring happens to just about everybody,"

(My muse was blossoming and then the fire nation attacked)

Yes, it was smart, wasn't it? Itnalath agreed, preening as her brother praised her. That was one of the many reasons why Avimoth was her favorite. He never fell short in compliments, and he was always so eager to give them. Eager to please as well, as he proved by obeying her command almost immediately. He was even sweet enough to give her more than enough room, tucking his wings in and making himself as small as possible. Itnalath gifted him with her own draconic smile, affectionately bumping his cheek. Why, thank you, sweet little blue. You're not so bad yourself. For a mere blue, of course.

You don't mean that, Toray thought to the spoiled green, knowing full well how much she cared about Avimoth. He was probably the only blue Itnalath would ever like, but still, she liked him.

I must keep up appearances, love.

Toray had no response for that. Just then, Fy'kor had spoken, and her words had brought tears to the woman's eye. Still shielding her face with her hands, Toray squeezed her eye shut and resisted the urge to break down. I don't care about your scars. It was ridiculous; she had heard those words before from Fy. Yet, just like the other times, they were powerful enough to move her to tears. She sniffled, her fingertips stroking over the side of her face deformed by scar tissue. "I can't," she whispered, and it was almost an apology. Spinning around, she hurried to her bedroom, shutting the door quietly behind her so that she could cover her head in privacy.

No amount of assurance would help. Not yet.

You tried, Itnalath said quietly to Fy'kor, no typical snark or mockery in her mind-voice. She was grateful for the bluerider's attempt, as failed as it was.

Minutes later, Toray emerged from the bedroom with one of her black head-wraps secured in place. She avoided Fy'kor's gaze, sitting down at the table and eyeing the food in front of her with reluctant hunger. "Thank you."

Avimoth puffed his chest out slightly when his sister complimented him, and he thrummed as he pressed his cheek against hers. He wriggled slightly in place, letting out a small croon. Oh, yes...well, thank you! He blinked a moment later in confusion, reaching out to his rider,

Um....Not so bad at what? I'm a good dragon, right?!

'That was a compliment, Vee.'

Oh....okay!

Fy inwardly groaned at her dragon, but then refocused on Toray. She almost went over to comfort her when she heard her sniffle, but then the greenrider spun around so she could put the wraps over her scarred face. The bluerider sat down in one of Toray's chairs, leaning backwards. Coaxing Toray to leave her straps behind around her was going to take quite a bit of resolve. She could wait.

She gave a slight shrug in response to Nala's statement. She opened her mouth to respond, but then Toray emerged, her gaze on the food. Fy smiled when her friend thanked her, "Oh, not a problem at all. Anything for a good friend." After a moment of pause, she added, "Y'know, I'd bring you some food up more often if it means I get to visit more,"

But...she already has a drudge to feed her..

'It's a joke....mostly'

Oh...okay. Was it suppose to be funny?

You are very welcome. Now, tell me all about the babies, my sweet blue! Itnalath scooted closer to Avimoth, leaning against him and resting her head across his forelegs. The position gave her a view into Toray's sitting room, allowing her to keep an eye on her distressed bonded. As such, she saw Fy'kor's shrug. It made her sigh heavily.

The greenpair locked gazes momentarily after Toray emerged from her sleeping room. Itnalath felt the pain in her rider's mind. The physical pain of stiff muscles had nothing on the mental pain of insecurity and socialization. Itnalath would not be sorry for inviting Fy'kor and Avimoth over. Yet, she was sad on her bonded's behalf. She doesn't care, silly thing.

It doesn't matter. I care. Toray wearily sat down, her soft brown eye blinking at Fy'kor through the slit in the wraps. She half wanted to embrace the younger woman, just to feel the physical warmth of a "good friend." How can she still consider me that? I'm a horrible person. Wringing her hands in her lap, she did not move to touch the food. Her stomach growled again, as if pleading with her to eat.

Fy's next words had the greenrider taken aback. She pressed her lips together into a thin line, clenching her fingers tightly together. "I couldn't ask you to do that," she said quietly, finally reaching for a redfruit. The fruit was tender under her fingertips, sure to be sweet. Toray wondered if it was coincidence, or if Fy'kor had remembered her distaste for sour food. "I pay someone to do that. You don't need to burden yourself." Lifting the fruit to her mouth, she bit into it, closing her eye.

Faranth, this is good...

I told you so.

Hush, you.

Well, there was a bronze, a garnet-she was gorgeous, with her gold shimmer.-two browns, one of which hurt one of the candidates. Didn't mean to! just caught his wingclaw. two grays, one of the grays was very pinkish and had shiny yellow patches under her wings! The blue paused for a moment to send her images of every dragonet he mentioned, his eyes whirling an ever exited green, and his tail swished from side to side. there were three blues, one of them was a larger one. He managed to push a candidate down on the sand. They will all make wonderful riders one day, I know it! The little blue rested his head lightly at the base of her neck, crooning softly.

Fy'kor's smile weakened slightly as she waited for Toray to eat something. Her eyes went down to the redfruit in her hands, and didn't venture up from it until Toray spoke softly, and finally grabbed a fruit from the pile. "True, True....maybe I could bring you dessert, or something." She paused for a moment to take a bite of her redfruit, "That wouldn't be a burden to me, please. I don't see why you worry about it so much," She grinned once more, "You wouldn't have to pay me to bring you some sweets,"

Does this mean we can visit more often? That would be very nice!
