Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Winters were strangely different here than what she was used to.

Sykeia looked out from her weyr, clutching her cup of klah. It was humid, clouds heavy with a storm sure to happen soon. They passed over Rukbat, shadowing parts of the area. High Reaches would have snow, and a cold breeze. She leaned against a sleeping Savvth's shoulder, taking a sip of her drink. High Reaches had familiar faces, too.

She'd been here only for a few sevendays. She'd met a few new people, introduced herself to her wingmates..what she had to do. Some of her free time was spent reading records, or spent up in her weyr with Savvth. And nobody else. Now, she paced over to her table, taking a seat quietly. She smiled at the silence. The brownrider tapped her fingers on the wood of the table. Winter was...different. Jolting once she heard a noise, turning around, she half-expected someone to come into her weyr.

Winter was different because nobody was coming home.

Sykeia gripped the copper necklace that her weyrmate had left behind. Winters were meant to be cold, snow was meant to cover the ground. Her lover was supposed to come and greet her. Only Savvth was here, silently slumbering on his couch. She blinked as her eyes refocused against the light, the clouds covering the light of Rukbat moving on elsewhere.

Savvth roused from his sleep, rumbling softly in distaste at his rider's thoughts. The big brown readjusted his wings, worried yellow eyes peering at his beloved.

You have friends.

Sykeia only nodded in acknowledgement. Two people she knew for quite a long time were in her wing. The brownrider had been happy upon hearing so, but never bothered talking to them. While their company was welcome, she wasn't sure she wanted to talk with them yet. It...wasn't in her interest.

They think of you like you are their friend! They trust you. I am sure your pushing them away is only worrying them. You're worrying me, Savvth crooned softly, shifting his weight so he could focus on His more. He gave a small, draconic smile as Sykeia returned to Savvth's side, her hand brushing against her brown's nose.

You are a great, wonderful friend. Look past this for me. This is our new home. And it is wonderful! The Winters are warmer. Some of your friends from High Reaches are in your wing, as well! Go talk to them. He kept his tone suggestive, and positive.

'Look..I promise I'll do better, but I can't speak with them right now.'

Savvth lifted his head, scanning the cloudy skies for his friends that did not seem to be out at the moment. He would not allow his rider to ignore all of their friends, or for his rider to keep herself in her weyr like this. He reached out to Emmeth and Ferrivoth, his voice dripping with urgency, all the while not letting his rider know.

Emmeth? Ferrivoth? Ask yours to come to our weyr. Mine needs some company. You both can join me on my ledge, too.

Emmeth was sprawled on the sideline of the training ground, basking in the muggy heat that encompassed the Weyrbowl as he watched his rider and her brother spar. Ferrivoth was perched on his ledge, gazing down an the brawling riders and the younger blue with regal disdain. A king looking upon the commoners. The distance between the two blues was great, but both looked up simultaneously when Savvth bespoke them. Their reactions were polar opposites. Emmeth's response was immediate. He had been Savvth's friend at High Reaches, and he had known Sykeia before that. While he had mostly forgotten the brownpair over their Turns at Vaioa, the memories and the comfort level had rushed back when he had arrive at drills to see them there, and his rider had nearly died of shock and joy. Of course, Savvth. Luca and I will be there as soon as possible.

Ferrivoth was much more venomous. He puffed up, like the overgrown wherry he was, and unfurled his wings. Ask them yourself. I am not your messenger. He did not relay the message to N'ik. No doubt Emmeth would do that for him. Little slave to commands that he was. After a moment of posturing, the dark blue settled back down, folding his wings and dropping into a crouch with grace.

Emmeth would have rolled his eyes if he could have. He did not dislike people, as a rule, but Ferrivoth was the exception to that rule. N'ik was, too, most of the time. Mine. Savvth's rider is upset. We are going to go visit her. He stood up, dropping his front half so that he could stretch.

Hu--Fardling feckers shards and Stars! A solid, meaty fist clipped Luca on the jaw, and her head swung to the side.

N'ik's laughter was raucous. "What are you doing, killer?" he taunted, not rising from his squared-off fighting stance. His fists did not drop, but his facial expression became less fierce and more mocking. "You're not a good fighter, but you can usually avoid an easy blow."

Luca glared at him, regaining her balance as she rubbed her jaw. Spitting on the dusty ground, she began to undo the wraps on her hands. "Sykeia's not feeling well. Savvth wants us to visit her." She had not spoken to her old friend in the sevendays since she'd transferred, except for short exchanges during drills. The shunning had made her angry, at first. Until Emmeth had helped her put the pieces together, and she'd finally noticed a distinct lack of Velenna and Halmoth around Vaioa. She did not know what happened; N'ik was being a tailfork and refused to tell her, and Sykeia had made herself unavailable. But she figured that the brownrider was grieving over...something.

N'ik snorted, straightening at last as he realized that the match was over. He would mark it as a victory for himself, in any case. "She ignores us until now, and now she wants our company?" He wasn't nearly as close to the brownpair as his sister was, but he knew what had happened to make them transfer. It didn't make him feel any more forgiving towards Sykeia. She had slighted him, and he would not forget that. Still, he would need allies, and browns had rank. And maybe, somewhere, he cared.

Luca rolled her eyes, pocketing her wraps and kicking a stone in his direction. "Come on. I'm sure Ferrivoth won't grace us with his presence long enough to take you up. You can ride on Emmy." And you, Emmy, will behave. She had no idea why Emmeth disliked N'ik so much. He was not outwardly rude, but his dislike seeped right into her whenever the man was around. Emmeth made an agitated sound, crouching to allow her to mount. N'ik scoffed, but eventually trotted after her. He and Emmeth had a momentary stare-off, but then the man climbed up behind his sister and they were off.

Emmeth crooned to Savvth as he alighted on the brown's ledge, and he touched the other male's nose with his own as his passengers dismounted. What is wrong, Savvth?

"Oi, Syke, guess who's here?! A sexy sweaty woman and a big oaf!" Luca grinned, marching past Savvth and into the brownrider's sitting room. N'ik scowled a bit, but pasted a pleasant smile on his face as he followed.

Savvth was pleased that Emmeth had responded amiably. He got an answer almost right as he sent the question. The brown had retained little memory of Emmeth when the bluepair transferred, he had been rooting around his rider's memories the past few sevendays, and all of his friends being in his same wing only made him happier. Unfortunately for him, though, Sykeia mostly ignored her friends.

He had expected the poison of Ferrivoth's comment. the brown gave the equivalent of a mental shrug. While he cared for the blue, his brashness was something he did not desire. Something told Savvth that the blue would not be joining him on his ledge. Ah, well, no doubt at least Emmeth and Luca would be coming. He glanced quickly back at his rider, who was still in the sitting room, and reached out to Emmeth again.

Thank you, Emmeth. I do appreciate it.

Savvth really did. Nothing else he suggested seemed to really do too much, so the brown wonderef that if he brought his-and her- friends into the picture, that she would....heal. While he had been upset that his beautiful garnet had gone, he saw no reason to dwell upon such things. There were so many other things one could cherish.

Sykeia really did enjoy the company of her friends, and had a temporary moment of excitement when she heard that her wing was the same of Luca's, and then N'ik's. Part of her felt bad when she only gave them greetings instead of engaging in proper conversation. Soon, she would.

That soon was apparently now. Savvth's eyes whirled green once Emmeth arrived on his ledge, and the brown lowered his head to touch his blue friend's nose. He watched Luca charge off, and N'ik follow. Still, he kept his words private from Sykeia. Mine is upset because her weyrmate died in one of the recent threadfalls...Velenna. She's since gone quiet and I thought that she needed some company, so I called you here.

Sykeia flinched slightly at Luca's voice. She was simultaneously happy and disappointed that they had come here. The woman turned her head over her shoulder, eyes going from Luca to N'ik. So, they both came. "Hey Luca...Hey N'ik," she gestured to her empty seats, greeting her two dragonriding friends in a rather neutral tone. "You can sit, if you want." She gave Savvth the mental equivalent of a glare. She would have to talk to him about inviting people over later.

I don't care what you do to cheer her up, or even if you don't, but do get her mind off of...this.

Do not thank me. You and Yours would have done the same for us. Emmeth sat down, folding his wings and curling his tail around his feet. He gazed after his rider with some fond exasperation, amused as always by her behavior. Such an odd thing. However, amusement almost immediately turned to chagrin when Savvth confided in him the reason behind Sykeia's upset. Gray touched his eyes, for the woman and garnet that he scarcely remembered. He bowed his head, making the softest of keening sounds, just once. Oh, Savvth. I am so sorry. He was at a loss for what else to say, and so he touched the brown's nose again.

Inside, Luca's footsteps faltered when she was greeted by a neutral brownrider. No laughter, not even a smart comeback. She glanced at N'ik, who was watching Sykeia passively. No stranger would notice, but there was something close to pity in the older bluerider's expression. Luca saw it, and it put her on edge. While N'ik merely nodded to the brownrider and sat down in one of the proffered chairs, Luca remained standing. She looked utterly confused, gaze flickering between her friend and her brother. Damn you, N'ik. Why can't you just tell me what is wrong? He knew. Oh, she knew he knew. He was just being a brat. He wanted her to mess up.

Valenna and Halmoth are gone Between. Thank Faranth for Emmeth.

Luca sucked in a sharp breath at the blue's soft words, and her eyes narrowed briefly at her brother. This was a new low, even for him. N'ik raised an eyebrow in return, one shoulder rising and falling in a subtle shrug. The man turned to Sykeia, leaning one elbow on the table. "How have you been adjusting so far, old friend? We haven't seen or heard much from you outside of drills." His tone was warm, friendly, but anyone who knew him could detect the accusation behind his words.

Disapproval rippled off of Emmeth, and for once, Luca couldn't help but feel the same way. Now was not the time for N'ik to be overly-prideful and feel slighted. She crossed her arms, thinking over Savvth's instructions. Emmy? Tastefully offensive or utterly obnoxious?

Emmeth groaned. Is neither an option? Can you not just offer a kind shoulder to cry on?

Discomfort flashed across Luca's face. She didn't do serious comfort. She couldn't stand crying. She would, if it was absolutely necessary, but only if she'd failed at all other attempts. No, she would try and make Sykeia laugh. "So...do you have anything to drink? I want to get the taste of N'ik's shame out of my mouth. I kicked his ass again."

N'ik internally facepalmed. Ferrivoth, tell Emmeth to tell Luca to keep her mouth shut. This is not her forte. The blue was silent.

Of course we would have. The brown rumbled, not quite being able to remember if they had actually helped Luca-or N'ik-with anything of dire importance. Visits happened before Halmoth winked between due to her rider's death, but to his knowledge, that was it. The young brown pressed his nose up to Emmeth's softly, It is okay.

Sykeia gave one glance Luca's way when she didn't move, but returned her gaze to N'ik when he started speaking. At once, she was both glad and upset at what came out of his mouth. It appeared that he was somewhat angry at her for not speaking to him. "There are changes in life that one must adapt to, even if they wish not to. Difficult, I suppose. I've only just come here," she replied, "and I'm not the type of person to adjust come the next day." A small amount of poison dripped in her words, but the tone that she said them in staid mostly neutral. She did not want N'ik breathing down her neck for something she simply could not control.

The brownrider tensed slightly when Luca spoke all of the sudden, and she turned around to look at her blueriding friend. She understood that Savvth had sent both of them here to cheer her up. Or, apparently, try to. She half-gestured to a klah pitcher, but then stopped suddenly when she finished her sentence.

Can you not just relax one bit? It's not like they are trying to wound you. Savvth finally spoke to his rider, shifting his wright on his ledge as he gave Emmeth a slightly frustrated look.

Sykeia grasped her klah cup again, sighing softly. She spared her blueriding friend another glance. If they were trying to cheer her up, she figured she might as well play along. A very slight smirk tugged at her lips, "Last time I checked, trying to beat your siblings into submission isn't always the brightest idea, if you actually want something to drink, Luca, there's a klah pitcher over there," she added a moment later, "though I'm not sure it works against one's shame."

'Savvth, tell me when you plan on inviting friends over so that I don't have to deal with people forcing themselves into situations just to cheer me up.'

(this was hella late)

N'ik bristled, his shoulders hunching, at the words of his friend. The only reason he did not snap then and there was that she was exactly that: his friend. He felt some small affection for her, and so he would tolerate her poisoned tone of voice. She was grieving. She was not thinking straight. She's weak, a voice snarled in the back of his head, full of disgust and contempt. N'ik did not argue with that. Sykeia was behaving just like a weakling in this moment. N'ik was not heartless, but he was not particularly empathetic, either. Being a bluerider had not made him more compassionate in the least. He simply couldn't put himself in Sykeia's shoes, and he had never experienced the death of a loved one himself, so he could not feel for her.

"It will take time," he agreed, his voice still fairly warm, less accusatory. He surveyed the brownrider for a long moment, weighing his words in his head. "The adjustment will be less difficult with the company of the people who care for you. Luca and I are here, Sykeia. We will carry you through this. But you need to let us. You can't hide from us." His fingers twitched; he almost reached for her hand. He did not, though. That would simply be too intimate of a thing to do.

Luca rolled her eyes at her brother. He was being too soft; why would Sykeia want to discuss such serious things? They were here to cheer her up, not make her cry or bore her to tears. She grinned wider when her friend looked her way, and she completely ignored N'ik's warning look. And there it was! The smallest of smirks, but that counted as a smile in Luca's book. Triumphant, the bluerider sauntered over to help herself to the klah, throwing Sykeia an over-the-shoulder look. "Trying? I'll have you know that I succeeded in beating that oaf." She pulled a face, slurping the klah greedily. "Nope. Still taste the shame."

N'ik heaved a long-suffering sigh, leaning back in his chair. "Killer, you couldn't defeat me even if I hobbled myself and tied both hands behind my back. You're the littlest twerp I've ever laid eyes on."

"A twerp that could destroy you!"

I am sorry about...them, Savvth.

There was an air of tension as N'ik hunched his shoulders, and the brownrider truly expected N'ik to snap at her because of her words. Thus, it surprised her greatly when N'ik responded with warm words. Although...he was probably still upset at her. She opened her mouth to respond, but shut it slowly as the bluerider finished speaking. Right...Right.

"...Luca and I are here, Sykeia. We will carry you through this. But you need to let us. You can't hide from us."

Sykeia rested her head in her hands, giving a soft sigh. N'ik was actually right. The brownrider shifted slightly in her seat, wondering what to say as a small wave of guilt and sadness crept through her stomach. Her throat tightened slightly, but she pushed the thought away momentarily when her dragon spoke to her.

You know you could have. They would understand. Savvth's eyes were whirling an uncharacteristic yellow, rumbling a soft croon from his couch.

'I know, it's just that...'

Faranth, the waves of warmth she was getting from her dragon would've made her cry if N'ik and Luca hadn't gotten into a little bit of an argument. She wrinkled her nose slightly,

'Who cares who won? who wins?'

You know how they are.

the brownrider wiped at her eyes with an idle hand quickly, growling at herself. Shard it. She focused on her hands, now clasped together on the table. Focus. Focus. She took a breath, looking back at Luca and then at N'ik. Siblings....she was sure if she had one, that she probably would be arguing like this at times.

"...Why do you two really care who can beat whom in a fight? Rather pointless...I'd say," Sykeia spoke suddenly, her gaze going between the two half-siblings. "You two are brother and sister. Maybe you won't get along most of the time, but you could at least act like you care about each other." She paused, adding a moment later, "there is much more to a relationship than strength."

Don't worry. I am sorry mine can't seem to put a smile on her face in times like these

The two blueriding half-siblings were glaring daggers at one another, momentarily forgetting the purpose behind their visit in favor of good old rivalry. They were completely ignorant of Sykeia's reaction to both N'ik's words and her own conversation with Savvth. Faranth, they were even ignorant of her seemingly-annoyed reaction to their bickering. Not until she actually said something. Then, they both turned to look at her. Even N'ik looked a bit sheepish, while Luca looked downright guilty. As someone who actually had somewhat of a romantic relationship, she could empathize with what Sykeia was going through. To an extent. She figured that she and N'ik were looking pretty petty at the moment, to the grieving brownrider.

N'ik cleared his throat, clasping his hands together on the table. "I apologize for her immaturity, Sykeia," he said lowly, once more fighting the urge to snap at the woman for speaking to him in such a manner. How dare she suggest that I don't care for my only important blood. He would have hit her upside the head any other time for the insult. As for her claiming that strength wasn't the most important thing in a relationship... Laughable. Strength was one of the most important things in the world.

Luca gave her brother another glare, and almost stuck her tongue out at him in a very immature way. Almost. She refrained, barely, and instead set her cup down on the table and claimed one of the chairs for herself. "Sorry, Sykeia. Now's probably not the best time, huh?" Her nose wrinkled, though, and she couldn't help but add, "And violence is a wonderful way to show affection. Didn't you know?"

You've nothing to apologize for, Savvth. Are they helping at all?

Sykeia's gaze-bordering a glare now- didn't falter as they finally took notice to her. Rarely did she get mad, and she didn't think too much about it now. It was one of those rare times when her emotions jumped ahead of her analytical mind. The past threadfall had been another. Her eyes went from N'ik, who actually looked embarrassed, and then to Luca. She took a sharp breath, about turn turn around in her seat once more, calm again.

At least, until N'ik spoke.

'Her immaturity?' Her voice was nothing less than annoyed.

She was being immature...

'That's not what I meant, Savvth...'

She frowned distastefully at N'ik. At this point, she was sure she was going to regret what she was going to say later. Her voice cracked slightly due to her recent being upset, but there was no doubt that she was both frustrated and angry, at the both of them. "You're apologizing for Luca?" She spared the bluerider a quick glance, and then the angry, fiery glare returned to her stuck-up blueriding friend. "Don't apologize for your sister. Secondly, N'ik, you, too, played a part in this! Don't you dare act like it wasn't any part your fault. You are better than blaming it on your sibling. Act like it."

No one thinks of these things in a fight, Sykeia... The brown offered, his voice slightly worried.

She stopped her motion of looking at Luca, shutting her mouth before she snapped at another friend. The brownrider couldn't really believe what had just came out of her mouth. She sat back in her chair, resting her face in the palms of her hands. She shook slightly as she fought to regain her composure, as well as to grab air for the quiet cries that came out of her mouth. Small tears streamed down her cheeks, "I'm sorry," she rasped out, "I didn't mean it...it's just..." Syekia didn't even manage to finish her sentence.

Savvth's eyes whirled a mix of blue and grey. He never liked it when his rider broke down into tears, like she had when Velenna went and Halmoth flickered between. He gave a deep sigh, and then spoke at last. Finally, her friends would comfort her now.

No, well....no, but they will. Give it a second..

Mother of Whers
You should put her in her place, Ferrivoth whispered insidiously, making it known that he had been eavesdropping the entire time. He had not moved from his ledge, but he had become interested in the conversation of the tiny humans. His N'ik was angry, and that could either be very bad or very entertaining.

A vein had begun to throb in the center of N'ik's forehead, as he clenched and relaxed his jaw over and over again. His pale brown eyes simply stared out from the shadow of his brow, but anyone who knew him could tell that he was seething. How dare this woman speak to him like he was a child? She was not his mother, nor his Weyrwoman. She had no right to say what she was saying. The knuckles in his huge hands cracked as his fingers tightened around each other. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Luca watching him.

I will, he assured Ferrivoth, his head defiantly raised. Grief is no excuse to lose your mind. Especially at your future Weyrleader. Suddenly, but with controlled movements, N'ik pushed back his chair and stood, looming over his sister and friend. His lips parted to give way to the tongue lashing Sykeia was about to receive...but then he stopped before uttering a sound. Sykeia was crying.

Luca was the one who jumped up, after a moment's shocked silence. She gave N'ik another quick look, hoping beyond hope that he wouldn't say anything stupid. Not now. His pride had been wounded, and she understood that, but he had to see that Sykeia wasn't in her right mind. The look on his face was one of surprise and discomfort. Men. I swear. Despite the mental scoffing, Luca wasn't much better at dealing with the whole...crying thing. She made her way around the table to stand next to Sykeia, dropping a hand onto the brownrider's shoulder and squeezing. "Eh, we deserved it." Her own pride hated those words. "We were kind of assholes. Come on, stop crying. It's okay. You're all right." Is she, though? She knew she wouldn't be all right if she was in Sykeia's place, with her little candidate dead.

Hearing the sounds of a human in distress, Emmeth turned his head back towards the mouth of the weyr. He crooned sadly, wanting nothing more than to wrap Savvth's hurting rider up in his wings. What can we do, Savvth? Just say it, and we'll do it. Help us help you both. It was distressing, being unable to comfort the woman that he knew he knew but couldn't really remember. Just because he didn't remember didn't mean that she didn't matter.

We'll take care of her, Em. Don't worry. Giving her still-frozen brother a pointed look, Luca rubbed Sykeia's shoulder. "What do you need?"
