Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The tension grew. One knife had been pressed against both throats. Eya was certain she had her own blood tracing a line below her jaw, just as Malaika would have one. Her palm burned with the injury, and blood dripped off the hilt. She'd never gotten light-headed at the sight of blood, had never been afraid of it. Instead there was something innately thrilling about drawing blood, about this weak girl surprising her enough to physically wound. The tingle that raised the hair on Eya's neck was not of fear.

Not like the tension she felt in Malaika's back.

She chuckled low in her throat at the other woman's submission. It was a little disappointing though. Not even five minutes into the conflict and she was already giving up. That wasn't the spirit needed for a bronze, especially a bronze like Mask. Eya would just have to watch that beast more closely. If she couldn't rely on Malaika rising to the challenge--

Her distraction was her undoing in this case. She only had a moment's warning, a shift of Malaika's hips as a warning before pain lanced up from her foot. She bit off a curse and somehow managed to maintain her grip on Malaika's wrist, still pinning it to her back. The nails that dug into her wrist, though... Eya grit her teeth, anger battling admiration. So the girl did have some fight left in her. Well. Eya wasted no time in testing just how much fight she had left.

She hooked her ankle inside Malaika's leg at the same time she let the knife fall to the ground and twisted to grab the free wrist. Using what leverage she had, Eya knocked Malaika's leg forward and pulled her down. Thank Faranth the drilling area was dirt and not stone. Eya landed first before rolling and straddling Malaika's hips, pinning one arm to the ground above her head when Eya's bloody hand slipped and lost control of the other hand.

"Clever. I can work with that," she said with a grin, life coming back to her eyes. She didn't need Malaika to like her. Shards, it might make the whole job easier if that hatred continued to burn. Hate often fueled competition. Assuming that Malaika had something besides the apathy she'd shown so far. This fight was...promising. "Now that I have your attention, Cupcake, do you want to let your wher keep walking all over you or not?"

Esk snorted. He'd already picked his prey. Mask could go on thinking his size was all that mattered. That's what the dumb ones always thought. So Esk let the argument go. Let Mask think he'd won this round. Esk would prove him wrong another time.

Can't smell flowers. Mask smell too bad, he jabbed and slowed so he could stalk his chosen prey. The cow was young, which meant it'd be tender. On silent paws, the bronze crept forward until he was within striking distance. Two bounds and a herdbeast's scream was cut violently short.

Luck was on her side, for once in her life, it seemed. She must have caught Eya by surprise, again. What a fantastic fighter. She can't even pay attention. Malaika knew that she would laugh over it later, in the relative safety of her quarters. First, though, she had to get to her quarters. The hand not clutching Eya's wrist was still trapped behind her back. She was still trapped. Trapped, and there was no way of breaking free. Yes there is. She forced herself to think semi-positively, if only to stave off the impending panic of a caught animal. Her breathing quickened despite her attempts to control it.

Was she above begging? Yes, she thought she was... How do you get yourself into these situations, you idiot? Faranth, after this, she was going to stick to her room and the stables. Coward. Weakling. A startled hiss of air escaped from between clenched teeth as she felt Eya's ankle hook around her leg. Nonono. Cursed woman! She knew what would happen before they even fell. Struggling would make it worse. My leg's going to hurt so bad tomorrow. Her only salvation turned out to be Eya, shockingly enough. The woman cushioned her fall, but had her pinned in the blink of an eye.

Chest heaving to catch her breath, Malaika glared up at the older bronzehandler. Her one hand was still free. She probably could have tried to punch Eya in the throat and called it a night. She had no desire to do so. This had escalated far enough, and she'd already ended up on her arse enough for one night. Closing her eyes for a moment, Malaika swallowed, keenly aware of the warm sting on her throat. "Why should I accept your 'help,' Sugarlump? Your track record is about as good as mine." When her eyes opened, they were black, and she wiggled underneath Eya, trying to gauge if she would be easily unseated. Dropping her voice to a husky purr, she added, "What's in it for me?" Eya's offer was tempting, but Malaika doubted Mask could be tamed or dominated. But...she didn't want more wher blood on her hands.

Mask smell delight! With a war cry of a roar, Mask charged as Esk did. His approach was similar to the other bronze's: creep up behind the beast, remaining downwind. Then, within the proper distance, he lunged and tore the animal apart with savage glee. Digging in with gusto, he bugled between bites.

Kill fun. Beast boring, but better than none, eh?

Shards, Eya loved winning. Not that Malaika had been a challenging opponent, but she'd gotten the drop on Eya twice tonight. If she weren't so tired from the drills--or so distracted by the fractures inside--she wouldn't have been caught off guard like that. At least she had Malaika's undivided attention now. The fact the younger handler didn't use her free hand to strike told Eya much about the current situation. Perhaps she'd been too quick to judge that Malaika had what was necessary to control her wher.

But at least she was asking. Even if she still continued to use those horrid pet names.

Eya wasn't so easily unseated and remained in her position. Her head tilted curiously when Malaika closed her eyes and swallowed. And her breathing... Was she still afraid? She should be. Eya was a dangerous person. She'd been a successful handler, an accomplished guard and hound trainer... Yes, she'd lost her blue, and her expression hardened at Malaika's reminder, but she was at least listening now, open to the idea. Eya released Malaika's wrist and brushed hair away from the woman's face, almost tenderly. If such a thing was possible.

"You won't lose another wher, for one," she responded, also letting her voice drop as she leaned down. "And there are...baser benefits, if I haven't scared you too badly." Who was she kidding? Fighting got her blood pumping, and if Malaika didn't take her up on her offer, Eya could find someone more willing for a different kind of wrestling. Besides, if Malaika could better control her wher, it was to Eya's best interest. Mask was the largest threat to Esk among the rogue whers. Eya had no intention of losing a second wher. She would kill Mask if he attacked Esk and Malaika couldn't pull him away. One good arrow. That's all she would need.

The thrill of the kill was...dull. Hunting a stupid herdbeast was nothing like the fights he'd survived. Fighting other whers, humans, even dragons...those were challenges. Those were worthy opponents. But Esk nevertheless ripped into his meal, growling and keeping an eye on Mask.

Want smarter prey, Esk grumbled and tossed his head up to swallow a chunk of haunch. Herdbeast dumb. Hunt thing that fight back. That what Esk like.

So much for that, Malaika thought bitterly, when Eya refused to budge. She hadn't truly expected the other handler to be knocked off so easily, but hope had a bad habit of striking her in the worst of times. At least the knife was no longer in play. That was an improvement, and without the threat of steel on her windpipe, Malaika could almost enjoy the weight of the woman on top of her. Almost. Eya was still a Bitran. Since when does personality matter, though? She almost scoffed aloud, only containing herself because she didnt' want Eya to take it as a personal affront to whatever she was saying.

Eya was scrutinizing her, and Malaika found herself doing the exact same thing to the other woman. She still looked off, like there was still rage boiling underneath her skin. A dangerous woman she might be. Malaika could easily see it. So, when the less bloody of Eya's hands moved towards her face, she flinched, eyes squeezing shut on hateful instinct. A sharp intake of breath betrayed her when, instead of a smack or worse, she felt an astonishingly soft touch. It was enough surprise to make her brain short-circuit momentarily. When was the last time she'd been touched gently? Her sweet, beautiful parents had tried, After Malaikask, to soothe her with warm embraces and kisses. She had denied them, knowing that she hadn't, and still didn't, deserve them. Rough was the only thing she accepted these days, save for the nuzzles of the beasts she still loved to work with.

Slowly opening her eyes, and glad for the darkness that hid her embarrassed flush (how could she have allowed herself to appear so weak?), Malaika regarded Eya without a hint of anything in her dark eyes. Perhaps there was the slightest hint of lust there, but it was buried well beneath layers of vague indifference. "Afraid of you?" Much to her pleasure, her voice did not waver. A smirk lifted the corner of her mouth as Eya leaned down. "Sugar, you don't scare me one bit. I'll accept your offer, and in return, I'll play your little teaching games." She wanted this more than she could have anticipated. Perhaps, if she could control Mask, she could have some sort of semblance of her Malaikask. Now that is a ridiculous amount of hope, she sneered to herself.

Swallowing a mouthful of flesh whole, Mask broke a rib between his teeth with a sharp crack. He pondered Esk's words as he sucked out the marrow, bright spots of green in his eyes. Herdbeast dumb, he agreed, the gears of his mind turning with a brilliant idea. Mask and Esk could find fun prey, in desert. Need get away from Puff and Esk's. Cause much trouble. Fun.

Malaika was fooling no one with her show of bravado. Or maybe she was fooling herself. She certainly wasn't fooling Eya. That kind of reaction to a simple touch, a light caress, did not speak of courage. More like knowing a blow was coming but the timing uncertain. Well, Eya intended to keep the younger woman on her toes for this exercise, even more so when she actually agreed to participate.

Hmm...now what did she expect to get in this little bargain?

"Good, good," she almost purred, incredibly tempted to lean closer just to see what Malaika could do. "And you're not a bad liar. You'll have to learn better, though," she smirked, that touch of rage still boiling under the surface. Or maybe it was madness. Surely she'd have to be a little mad to pick a creature like Esk as a bondmate. That would mean Malaika was slightly mad herself for Mask. Did the insane ever ponder their own sanity? Eya hoped not. She didn't want to be mad, didn't want to fracture entirely.

As she moved to roll off the other woman, Eya may have let her hips slide along Malaika's, her knee linger a little too long over a thigh, her face a little too close for comfort. Maybe. She did roll off, though, and wiped her bleeding hand on the back of her shirt before using a leather strap to bind her palm. It would due until she could get a proper bandage. "First tip. Someone offers you the hilt, don't cut their hand. Shove the blade through their chest," she chuckled morbidly, searching until she found the fallen knife and slipped it back into its sheath. When a weakness presented itself, Eya always tried to exploit it. It was the only way she'd been able to control Esk thus far. With ease, she pushed to her feet but, since Malaika seemed oh so intent on cooperating now, she held her hand to help the younger woman up.

She wasn't a total Bitran.

Sometimes.

Ripping into the belly of his beast, Esk pulled out the entrails and discarded them. He'd always hated the long, slippery things. Tasted foul. Like rotten grass. He wasn't about to eat grass, especially after it had been in a herdbeast's stomach for who knew how long. Deadly desert prey, the bronze agreed, green speckling his eyes. Challenge. Esk like challenge. Go now? See what find? This was an excellent idea to the bored wher. This Hold was boring. His handler was boring (not really, but he refused to admit that). This herdbeast was boring. There had to be something more interesting out in the untamed desert.

Not a bad liar? For a moment, Malaika was even more irritated. She narrowed her eyes at Eya, not trusting the other woman's purring voice one bit. Eya couldn't have seen through her. She was a great liar. One of the best. I'm not afraid of you! she was tempted to scream at her. Her fingers curled into fists. Biting back any retort at all, she choked back a gasp as Eya practically slid off of her. Now she's just taunting. And it was working. The muscles in her jaw jutted out as she clenched her teeth and held her breath. Eya's face was too close, for just a moment. The urge to headbutt her was great. But it would have only led to more trouble than she was already in.

With the extra weight now off of her, Malaika found that she could breathe easier. Not easily, but easier. She remained on her back, despite the vulnerable position, staring up at the star-spangled sky while she caught her breath. Her bad leg was aching fiercely, and her other leg was sore where her sheathed sword had been caught between it and the ground. Laying there seemed like a good idea. So much better than standing. You're pathetic.

Chuckling at the voice in her head, Malaika watched Eya wrap her bleeding hand. I hope it hurts. Maybe it would get infected. The bronzehandler would deserve it. Curling her lip, Malaika grunted and sat up. She ignored the hand offered to her, slowly standing. Her scarred leg shouted its protest. The muscles were stiffening in the chilled night air. "Trundlebug, if I'd wanted you dead, you'd have had that knife in your chest the moment you offered it to me." That part was true. If she had wanted to kill Eya, she could have. But she was so, so tired of death and fighting. Shoulders slumping at the weary thought, she raised an eyebrow at the other handler, waiting for her next "wise words."

This was great. The best way to make Puff-Puff angry. Mask's tongue lolled out of his mouth as he considered his kill for a moment. His head tilted to the side, and he seemed to shrug before he stuck his head into its belly and ripped out the liver. That was the best part, and he wouldn't let it go to waste. The rest could rot for all he cared. Yes. Go now. Esk want ask Esk's permission first, like good dog? The question was posed innocently, and Mask batted his eyes at the other bronze. He swallowed the remnants of his snack and licked his chops, glancing towards the humans one last time.

Useless. No fun hunt. No hunt with. No fight with. Useless.
