Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Consoling his child in the face of overwhelming disappointment was something R'ece had only had to do on a few occasions and usually said child had been young enough that a bubbly pie had been enough to solve the problem. He had little idea of how to approach Haely's failure to Impress on her first try since both he and Nonnie had been lucky enough to. So he wallowed in uncertainty for a time before finally venturing off to find the girl when he felt she might have calmed herself a bit. Dealing with hysterical crying was...not something he excelled at.

You might still bring bubbly pies. She's young yet. Might enjoy them. Aristoth bore him down to the weyrbowl in a gentle glide that had him touching down with only the slightest puffs of dust. He settled to his stomach to let R'ece dismount and started to relax...and then froze, head tilted as his rider slid down his neck. There was a tenseness to his body that alarmed R'ece and the bronzerider also froze, staring up at the enormous dragon in alarm.

"What's wrong?"

Aristoth relaxed an instant later and seemed almost happy...although there was a touch of guilt and resignation to his mind and the tone of his voice when he finally spoke again. She comes soon. Today. Fort has had enough of change, it seems. They are sending all of the blacks and graphites to "where they belong". She's quite excited about that, Ziptath says.

Oh bloody feck.

R'ece put his head in his hands. One daughter was enough, especially one he was just getting to know and trying to make up for a lifetime of unintentional abandonment towards. Nonnie was...something else. She was a storm; trouble wherever she went and as unruly and excitable as they came. He didn't regret coming to Vaioa and meeting Haely, but jays he'd really hoped to give Nonnie some more time on her own to mature.

Maybe she has. She's done well for herself for over a turn without you. I doubt you'll need to baby either of them.

Aristoth turned his big head towards the candidate barracks and reached out, gently touching the mind of the young girl inside. His voice was warm and full of reassurance, an infinite kindness meant to soothe away her turmoil. Little one? We have come to visit you. Won't you come out?

Haely had improved somewhat in the course of her misery and woe since being left Standing--especially since some of her fellow Candidates had been kind enough to comfort her when they were available to do so--but she was still not quite the same, sunny Haely she had been before the clutch, either. She went about her chores with dour looks and quiet sighs as opposed to her usual, overexuberant enthusiasm; she ate, but took no pleasure in the eating; she conversed, but was withdrawn and had to be plied for answers.

Her mother had been too busy to meet with her, which was to be expected; her mother was usually too busy to meet with her only offspring, and so Haely hadn't been too surprised when her requests to meet with the grim-faced woman had been met with gentle rejections. Still, she'd heard from her, at least, and that was something. At the very least, she wasn't being disowned.

Quietly, she oiled Puck--Feran freshly gleaming from her comfy spot on Haely's favorite pillow nearby--only to blink when Aristoth's voice suddenly rang out in her mind. The bronze lizard in her hands tilted his head this way and that, then peeped with excitement and curiosity. All at once, the oiling was nearly forgotten as Puck launched himself into the air and flew to perch on the doorjamb expectantly.

Feran let out a tiny huff at the bronze, then climbed up Haely's arm to perch on her shoulder as the girl slowly rose. It wouldn't do to leave Aristoth and R'ece out there waiting for her--not if they'd taken the time to come and visit with her. Quietly, she headed outside, forcing a smile that she didn't fully feel--until it bloomed in full upon seeing Aristoth's gleaming hide. How could she help but smile at her father's handsome bronze gentleman?

"Hullo," she greeted. "Sorry it took me a minute. I was oilin'--" before she could finish, Puck was whirling up to meet his massive cousin, hide only half-bright since his oiling had been interrupted. Haely laughed. "I was oilin' Puck, here, but he got all excited. Feran's nice an' shiny, though, aren't ya, girl?"

Feran let out a demure peep at this, casually showing off her shimmering hide as she made herself comfortable on her Person's shoulders.

R'ece blinked, temporarily distracted by the appearance of not one, but two fire lizards. He'd accepted the little queen once he'd learned from Aristoth that she didn't rise, but the bronze was new. How many more did Haely have? How did she have time to be a candidate? He watched, somewhat bemused as Aristoth followed the little bronze with his head, rumbling in amusement at the excited thoughts radiating from the little one.

They take care of her, I think, his dragon assured him gently. See to the girl. He let his chin fall to rest on the ground and booped her forehead with practiced gentleness. She didn't seem too broken up, but then the bronze hadn't expected her to instantly burst into tears either.

R'ece ran a hand through his bright red hair and then stooped more to her level, opening his arms invitingly to his daughter. "I'm sorry I didn't come sooner. Being a dragonrider is busy work, but that's no excuse really. C'mere."

A hug! So you do remember how to do this.

I'm not senile, the bronzerider snapped back defensively. Anyone would need a hug after not Impressing while all their friends did; it was a logical first step. Perhaps the news he was still wrapping his mind around would lighten the mood a bit.

"I also have something to tell you," he said with a smile that only felt a little forced. He could feel a stress headache building between his eyes. "One of your sisters is coming to Vaioa today. Apparently Fort Weyr has decided to expel all black and graphite riders from their ranks. Stuffy folks, they are."

Haely giggled when the massive bronze gently booped her with his enormous snout, biting her lip as she grinned up at him before reaching a hand up to pat his nose affectionately. Every time she met with him, she always found herself struck by how incredibly friendly he was--especially when compared to her mother's surly grey.

When she saw her father spread open his arms for a hug, however, she was promptly distracted by her thoughts on Aristoth. She hesitated for a span of a few heartbeats, then rushed over to hug her father tightly as she practically threw her small body against him. She snuggled into his riding leathers, burying her face there as she felt tears threatening once more--she didn't want to cry! She didn't want to embarrass him--or herself! But... but she needed this hug. This hug made up for all the hugs her mother hadn't given her.

"M-Mom always... always says she's too busy," she muttered, hugging the man tighter with her skinny little arms. "I h-haven't hardly seen her since Standing. I think she hates me." The sob escaped her at those words, her throat unable to hold it back longer as her firelizards twirled around her in the air and cheeped their dismay at her unhappiness.

She didn't have too terribly long to be unhappy, though. R'ece had news. She was about to get a sister.

Slowly, she looked up at him with large, round eyes still shimmering with fresh tears. She blinked a couple of times, trying to wrap her head around the new information as she worried her lower lip with her teeth.

"A sister...? My sister is coming? Here? To Vaioa? For true?" She pulled back a bit, wiping away at her tears hastily with a sleeve. "Wh-what's her name? What's she like? She rides a dragon? Oh--what dragon does she ride? Is it a nice dragon? Will it bite if I try to pet it? Is she excited, or--oh! Oh, is she scared? I hope she's not scared! Vaioa is very, very nice, and I'll be super nice, too!"

A sister! Her firelizards looked at one another inquisitively, chittering and peeping back and forth. Human clutchmates were something new--and Feran was relatively certain that Haely hadn't had a clutchmate when she had first been Impressed! The little gold wasn't sure she liked this one little bit; the bronze, on the other hand, finally let out a shriek of excitement and dove down to perch square on Haely's head as he peeped his own questions to the bronzerider about this strange new Person that would soon be entering their lives.

Reece didn't tell her that her mother was the norm when it came to dragonrider parents; it wouldn't help the situation at all to defend the woman Haely felt was neglecting her. Besides, he felt some words of comfort should have been offered the girl when she failed to Impress.

It seemed barbaric to him to just leave her in the dark. So he rubbed her back and bit his lip and tried not to tear up because she had tears in her eyes. Aristoth would never let him live it down if he cried.

Luckily, news about Nonnie nullified the threat of tears. It was like a switch had been flicked inside the young girl and suddenly she was all excitement again, brimming with energy and questions. A tolerant smile floated across his face and Aristoth rumbled in amusement, curling his tail in a protective ring around his little family.

"For true," he responded, chuckling. "Her name is Nonnie and she's....a lot like you actually. She's always done what she wants, regardless of the consequences and she never sits still." His voice was filled with fond frustration at the memory of past incidences. Jays but she would make life interesting - and frustrating - again!

"I've only met Ziptath once but he's similar to his rider. Very nice but hyperactive and easily bored. I think he'll find that Vaioa is not quite as exciting as he'd hoped. But I'm sure he'll love you."

"Nonnie," she murmured, rolling the strange name around her tongue as she committed it to memory. "Nonnie and... Ziptath?" The girl bit her lip, looking up at her father with a grin. "She sounds like a lot of fun! I hope she'll go exploring with me, sometime. I can show her all the best places to climb, and the best places to hide when people are being mean--oh! And I can show her where all the fun things are in the archives--the ones with the nice pictures!"

She giggled at the thought of Ziptath zipping everywhere; the two sounded like a perfect complement of fun and adventure, and she was absolutely dying to meet the both of them even with such a cursory introduction.

"Oh, I hope he does love me! Like Aristoth," she added, grinning up at the massive bronze who had curled so neatly around his little family. "Is Ziptath just a little dragon? His name sounds like a name for a little dragon--all quick and zippy! I wonder how dragons get their names? Maybe they just know?"

She thought on this for a few moments, resting against her father as visions of a rosy new family floated through her head. She'd have not only a caring father who checked in on her from time to time with her big bronze father-dragon, but she'd also have a sister who could show her the ropes! Maybe she'd even let her ride along, sometimes! Oh, but that would be lovely.

Feran let out a soft snort at this, already feeling a tiny flit headache coming on at the thought of trying to monitor two little things full of energy. Puck, on the other hand, was all excitement and joy; Nonnie sounded like fun, and Puck loved fun!

"Ziptath is very little," R'ece responded, carefully stepping over the idea of rock-climbing. Although it had brought her into his life, the idea of Haely scaling the walls of the Weyr again sent a chill up his spine. She could fall to her death before she ever got a chance to meet the dragon she was surely destined to Impress. He resolved to have a word with the current roster of watch dragons about that. "He's a black dragon, so he's one of the smallest out there."

I didn't pick my name, Aristoth informed the candidate. I woke up and knew it. It is a part of me as much as my wings or my tail are. I just knew it was right. There was a touch of amusement in his tone; R'ece had once postulated that queen dragons named their children when they were still developing and just forgot about it, but he knew that wasn't the case. There was no explanation at all for it; just like there was no explaining the wonder of Impression. Some questions just had simple answers.

A pop rang out above them, followed by the brief rush of freezing air the heralded a dragon returning from the nothingness of between, and suddenly the sleek black hide of one of the strange black dragons spun into view. The sun glinted off his skin, setting it afire with blue and purple iridescence, positively radiant and quite overshadowing the tiny form perched on his shoulders. The black dragon rolled, crying out joyfully as the blessedly warm air of Vaioa's skies filled his wingsails and then began a gentle spiral downward. The figure on his back waved vigorously with both hands; if she hadn't been attached to her dragon by her straps, she would have fallen to her death.

"Father! Hey!"

R'ece couldn't help but smile. A turn and a half of weyrlinghood had done Nonnie well. She seemed a bit taller; certainly more filled out and muscular and bursting with exuberance that made her previous energetic nature seem sluggish in comparison. She hardly waited for her dragon to touch down before she was flinging herself off of him and into his arms, emitting a high pitched squeal that would have put a fire lizard to shame. His arms closed around her instinctively and he swallowed a sudden lump in his throat. Aristoth discreetly touched noses with Ziptath, rumbling a welcome of his own.

"Good Faranth, girl! I've missed you!"

Haely grinned at the thought of her sister having a little dragon. She wanted a little one, too! Or a grey, but that was mostly because she wanted to make her mother proud, and pride and grey seemed to go hand-in-hand with that woman. Ziptath was a black dragon, too--she'd seen a couple of them before around the Weyr. They were a new color, one Pern had never seen, and she was absolutely thrilled that she'd get to see one up close and personal when her sister came.

Just was she was going to reply to Aristoth on the subject of dragon names, however, a strange pop resounded through the empty air, and Haely felt a chilly rush of air before--

"Father! Hey!"

She blinked at the new voice and looked up, awed, as a dragonrider spiralled down from the heavens on a shining black. Was this her sister? She found herself ducking behind Aristoth as best she could, sudden shyness overcoming her as the smaller dragon landed and a girl practically flew off his back and into R'ece's arms.

The other girl didn't look too much older than Haely herself was, but she certainly took more after the bronzerider than she had. Whereas she was a spitting image of her mother, this blackrider clearly resembled her father--which only made Haely more awkwardly shy. After all, she had not known R'ece very long, and sometimes found herself doubting her lineage even when it had been proven, and here was a girl who not only had a dragon but even looked more like the bronzerider than she did. So, quietly, she stared at her sister from the safety of Aristoth's massive tail--only to grimace when Puck winged over to the girl and chittered excitably, eager to be introduced.

"Puck! No," she hissed, ducking against the massive bronze tail as she hid her face in her hands. Feran sighed from her shoulder, letting out a sympathetic peep before hopping up to perch on Aristoth's tail as she eyed the newcomer with idle curiosity.

Nonnie was - always had been - a force of nature. Even with her miniature form, she managed to fill a room with radiating enthusiasm that was catching, even if you were currently furious at the girl. It was hard to stay mad at her, especially once she'd perfected the wide-eyed puppy look that sent her father's shoulders into a defeated slump. She had always had R'ece wrapped around her little finger, from the moment she was born, and she knew it.

He'd missed her so much it hurt, and the easing of that ache was such a great weight lifted off of his shoulders that R'ece staggered a bit. Before he could get out anything else meaningful, Nonnie had squirmed out of his arms and bounced forward curiously to greet the little bronze fire lizard that fluttered up to her. Her eyes positively danced with wonder.

"Who is this? Is he yours? I thought you never wanted a fire lizard!"

I think he belongs to the girl, a soft mindvoice answered, readily audible to the gathered group. Ziptath peered over her shoulder with brilliant, unblinking green eyes. Flecks of sapphire blue danced in them as he regarded the tiny form that huddled against Aristoth's tail. There was something there...a spark of the same nature that had called to him from Nonnie the day he'd hatched. A candidate then, and one that was obviously quite close to R'ece and his dragon. Could it be...?

"Oh my Faranth!" Nonnie's shriek cut through his thoughts. The girl rushed right up into Haely's space to get a better look at her. Or, rather, the golden fire lizard that accompanied her. "Are these both yours?! Seven shades of shaffit! What did you do to get them?!"

R'ece cleared his throat discreetly, but Nonnie was far too interested in the fire lizards to pay him any mind. He swallowed a brief stab of disappointment, much to Aristoth's amusement. She has not changed much, has she? So easily distracted, it's a wonder they graduated at all.

R'ece snorted and fought the sour look off his face with a bit of effort. "Girls? I think formal introductions are in order."

Puck let out a friendly cheep as the girl greeted him, fluttering his wings as he did little tricks in the air to show off for her--all until she let out an ear-piercing shriek which sent him winging back to Haely while chattering in alarm. Feran let out an odd sort of chuckle at this, only to rear back when she suddenly had a face full of girl. The gold let out a scolding chitter as the smaller bronze hid behind her flared wings.

Haely herself had very nearly toppled over when her sister had rushed to see her--or her lizards, she thought--and found herself gawking up at the other girl as she was peppered with questions about her precious pair of friends. She blinked a couple of times, then grinned brightly as she got up on her knees and scooted over to hug her firelizards to her chest. The pair of them squeaked at the sudden capture, but did not blink Between; instead, they squiggled briefly, showing their vague displeasure, before falling still and allowing themselves to be held by their Person.

"Well, I didn't do nothin' special. I got Feran for m' birthday a couple Turns ago, but mom thought she was just gonna be a brown. Got her for a steal, too. Bet the guy who sold the egg was kickin' himself. Puck, well... Puck I got from, um... it's..." She paused, glancing at her father. "It's a long story, but I got him with my friend, Barr--er, B'ez."

She then smiled a bit more shyly as she met her sister's gaze, hugging her lizards a little tighter as Puck cheeped happily at the memory of his egg being stolen--what a fun thing!

"They're my best friends."

When R'ece spoke up again, Haely blinked and looked up at him before taking a moment to really get a good look at Ziptath. Such a handsome thing he was!

"Oh. Um. I'm Haelyea--but everybody calls me Haely. My mama's a greyrider here."
