Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Rebmikh laughed as her flitters darted around her room, excited by the warm weather of summer that left plenty of residual heat even at the Wherhandler's odd hours. The three of them darted here and there, brown and green teaming against bronze--and then bronze and brown suddenly turning on poor Cress as the group squabbled and played chase with one another. She watched them with quiet amusement, though Rebmisk was considerably less thrilled by their antics.

Tiny things so loud, he whined, putting his foreclaws over his face as he tried to shove his head beneath his Handler's bed. Why so much loud?

"Aw, they're just playin'," she replied, reaching down to pat his thick shoulders as he continued to try to hide. "Don't worry, I'm sure they'll tucker themselves out soon. Especially Clay, since he's still sa young."

Almost a half-hour later, the game was still underway. At this point, even Rebmikh was beginning to tire of the lizard's playful antics and constant joyful screeching. Rebmisk, however, had had entirely enough.

With a growl, he turned to bark at the flitters, his booming voice echoing in the small quarters as his eyes flashed yellow, then red, then yellow again. The flitters squealed with one voice, blinking Between in fear--except for Clay, who winged for the door. Rebmikh jumped to her feet, running after the beautifully-marked brown with a cry of dismay.

"Clay! Naw, come back! He didn't mean it--'Misk, you better apologize," she called, simultaneously attempting to soothe and scold as the terrified little brown flew straight out the door and down the corridor.

Not apologize. Peace an' quiet, Rebmisk grumbled, shifting to finally settle down and get some rest.

She'd deal with him later. For now, she had a frightened lizard to attend to. She ran after him, trying to coax him back--but he slipped inside a door that was only slightly ajar, squirming his small body inside, and immediately taking shelter at the very back of a shelf full of all sorts of clay vessels.

Rebmikh grimaced and stopped short of the door, knocking out of politeness; she was pretty sure this was Hama's door, and she felt absolutely awful that her poor frightened lizard had come to destroy the healer's peace that evening.

"Hama? Is that you in there? I, uh... I think one of my flitters got in. He's brown. Scared out of his wits, poor darlin'. Can I come in an' try to get him back?"

Hama sat at her table, hunched over a stack of hides, and the only sounds in the room were Hamask's breathing and the faint skritches of Hama's pen against the hide. Hama appreciated the silence. It allowed her to focus on her writing, and to more clearly recall the details of the procedure she had done that day. The availability of hides was a perk of living in a larger hold that she had never considered when she worked out in the backcountry, and now she had taken to keeping a journal of her cases, for her own benefit or for whoever came after her.

But Hamask's breathing was loud, a restive snuffling that accompanied the scratch of claws against stone as the green wher paced around their room in a futile search for entertainment. As the candlemark passed, the green began to sigh: great, heaving sighs that whistled through her nostrils. Hama felt rather than saw the wher's large, plaintive eyes staring at her back.

"I know you're bored, baby," Hama murmured, "but please be patient. I'll be done soon."

Whatever Hamask began to say in response was cut off by a sharp wark of surprise and a flutter of—wings? Hama twisted in her seat, her brown eyes widening when she saw a small brown form dart into her shelves. She shot up from her chair then, a cry of alarm sticking in her throat. Her salves, supplies! One careless move from that lizard and those jars could fall and break—

She heard a knock on the door then, recognized Rebmikh's voice a moment later. "Oh, yes, please." Hama opened the door, waving her inside, though her eyes were still locked on the place where she saw the firelizard disappear. She pointed. "He's right there. Hamask, get away from there!"

The green wher was sniffing eagerly at the shelf, her eyes bright with interest. Hearing her name, she swiveled her head around to look at the two women, but she did not move. Tiny lizard! she declared excitedly.

Clay hid himself behind a large poultice jar, shivering and peeping with his distress as he wrapped his tail tightly around his small frame. When the Large Green Monster approached him, however, he promptly fell silent with wide, staring eyes gleaming yellow from the shadows of the Shelf of Safety. Past terror entirely forgotten--he had no idea what he had come in here for, now--his entire world was consumed with the large pale green maw that had, just moments ago, been startlingly close to him.

When he heard Rebmikh's voice and her heavy, clomping footsteps entering the room, however, the flamboyantly-marked brown set to creeling like an abandoned hatchling in distress. His Person would surely save him from this awful menace that had shoved her face into his comfortable hiding place!

"So sorry," Reb repeated as she entered into the room, carefully moving over to the shelf and grinning at Hamask when she announced the presence of the 'tiny lizard.' "Yeah, Hamask, he's pretty tiny, ain't he? Just a little baby, still. His name's Clay. Rebmisk went and scared him, sa I guess he decided to come hide here."

She moved closer to the shelf, squinting as she looked for the lizard--only to laugh when she saw a pair of large, bulbous eyes staring back at her from the shadows. He peeped a long, soft peep of dismay, letting his chin flop dramatically to the shelf, as he looked upon her with utter distress.

"Oh, now--it's okay, baby. You come on out. Hamask ain't gonna hurt you. Right, Hamask? You just wanted to say hi, didn't you?"

Clay was thoroughly unconvinced. The Green Beast was considerably larger than he was, and her grinning mouth full of sticky slobber and sharp teeth was not at all inviting. Instead, he only curled up tighter on his shelf and let out another soft peep.

"Ah, sharddit," she muttered, turning to look at Hama with a sigh. "We, uh... we may have ta move some of these jars. I'm real sorry, Hama. Didn't know he'd wing off like that. Dunno why the li'l dimglow don't just pop Between, but you know how lizards are."

"Jays, Hamask, please get back," Hama said with increased urgency, the young firelizard's renewed creeling grating in her ears. "You're scaring the poor thing."

Hamask made an incredulous noise in her throat that suggested offense that she might scare anything, but nevertheless heeded her handler, waddling back a few steps to give Rebmikh room to approach. When the bluehandler bespoke her, Hamask snorted in affirmation.

Only wanted to say hi, she repeated, and her head bobbed once in a strangely human-like nod.

"I believe you didn't mean to frighten him, Hamask, but you must remember you're much bigger than he is." Hama patted her wher on the head as she passed to come to Rebmikh's side. Bending over, she peered over the other woman's shoulder, following her gaze until she, too, spotted the cowering firelizard, mostly concealed behind her jars.

"It's no trouble to move them," Hama sighed, shrugging off Rebmikh's apology. She offered the woman a small smile to emphasize no harm had been done—yet, she reminded herself. Slowly, so as not to startle Clay, Hama reached for the jars that hid him.

"I don't really know how lizards are, actually," she said idly as she transferred two of the jars to her table. "I've never actually had a firelizard, though I suppose I've known a few and heard enough about them. I imagine it's different to be bonded with one, though; to have to deal with them all the time." Hama paused, eyeing the shadowy corner that hid Clay thoughtfully, then looked at Rebmikh. "Do you like having a firelizard?"

Rebmikh chuckled at poor Hamask as she nodded, the green obviously disappointed by the unfortunate turn of events. Still, she was glad that Hama herself wasn't too upset; as the healer began to move jars away from Clay's little hiding spot, Rebmikh watched with idle curiosity and tried to guess what all she had in the various mixtures. Herbs and such, no doubt. Things that she knew very little about.

All the while, she softly cooed to the lizard, making sure she stayed well within his line of vision. Though he was startled by all the movement, the brown seemed to be calming down a bit now that the Green Beast was further away from him and his Person was in close proximity. He uncurled himself slightly, chancing a peek out from the shelf before darting his head back when Hama moved to grab another jar.

"Never had a firelizard?" Rebmikh repeated, tilting her head curiously to one side. She then laughed when Hama asked her if she enjoyed the whole affair, her grin splitting her lips wide as she moved to carefully retrieve her balled-up lizard from the shelves.

"Oh, I love 'em. I got three, y'know. A green, a bronze, an' now this little fella. I feed th' strays sometimes, too. I just think they're cute as all get out. Tiny dragons, they are. Isn't that right, Clay?"

The brown slowly periscoped his head up from his balled-up mass, looking around for threats, before blinking up at Rebmikh and melting into warm affection as he leaned up to butt his small head against her chin. This was a good! This was a nice! He couldn't even remember being frightened, nor what had brought him into this strange place to begin with.

"Gonna have ta watch this one," Rebmikh continued with a laugh. "He's a real dimglow. Still, he's sweet. You wanna apologize to Hama, huh? Tell her sorry for nearly wreckin' everything?"

The lizard cheeped back at her as she addressed him, mimicking the clip of her speech before turning his head to regard Hama and cheeping meaninglessly at her, as well. Noises were fun! He liked to make noises with the Friendly Giants!

"Never," Hama confirmed, laughing as Rebmikh did, her smile coming easily while the bluehandler described her own sizable fair. Three firelizards! And here Hama thought it was hard enough to obtain just one; certainly the folks in the backcountry that she helped all those turns had trouble finding any for sale. But then, she thought, this was Vaioa, a land full of warm sand and sun, perfect conditions for the little lizards to breed and nest. Hama had seen veritable swarms of them here, likely the domesticated mingling with the wild residents.

"They are very cute," Hama agreed warmly, eyeing Clay as she crouched beside Rebmikh. The little brown seemed calmer now, though she wasn't so worried now that her jars were out of the way. Still, it was good to see him uncurl from a tight ball of limbs and wings and nudge Rebmikh affectionately.

Oh, what a little precious. Hama thought she might melt right then and there. They certainly were tiny dragons; that had to be a great deal of their appeal, especially for non-riders.

She laughed again when Clay chittered at her, remarking, "He's a talkative one, isn't he?"

Not scared anymore? Hamask interjected, her voice taut with impatience. She shifted from foot to foot where she stood, her gaze locked on the shelves where Clay still sat. Not scared? I come see now?

"That's up to Rebmikh and Clay," Hama said, looking at the bluehandler.

Rebmikh grinned as she gently extracted Clay from his hidey-hole, cradling the little thing in her large hands as Hama crouched beside her to get a better look at her silly little brown.

"Yeah, he's a right chatterbox! And, well," she said, stroking Clay's neck gently with a finger, "any time you wanna play with one, just gimme a holler. They're always cravin' attention. Cress, especially. My li'l green lady. They may show up here in a minute or two, once they get their wits about 'em again. Big Blue just gave 'em a right good fright."

Hamask then expressed her desire to see Clay up close, and Rebmikh laughed quietly as Clay swiveled his head to eye the large green curiously. Now that he was safe in his Person's hands, he seemed much more comfortable--indeed, he seemed to have entirely forgotten that the large green monster had ever frightened him in the first place.

"I think it's okay if you wanna come say hullo, Hamask. Ain't it, Clay?"

The lizard considered a moment, then peeped cheerfully as he spread his wings wide and shimmied them in greeting to the Big Green Friend. His person liked the green thing! His person liked the other person! He liked the green thing and the other person, too! Perhaps they would give him scratches and pats!

Rebmikh only grinned as this stream of half-baked ideas fluttered over her consciousness, shifting to hold Clay more comfortably beside Hama as she nodded her head to Hamask.

Cute though Clay was, Hama faltered for a moment when Rebmikh mentioned the others might be on their way. Doubtless the other woman meant it as a good thing, a nice opportunity for her to meet the trio all together, but the first thought that popped into Hama's head was a vision of three energetic and flighty lizards wheeling about the room with little care for the precious stores she kept carefully sorted on the shelves. Add Hamask to the mix, who would certainly forget her usual caution in all the excitement, and they had a recipe for chaos and disaster.

But Hamask had been fairly well-behaved so far, and Clay was quite still now that his fright had passed. Perhaps she was merely thinking of the worst.

"All right," she said to Rebmikh, her smile returning tentatively. Aside from the concern she felt for her stores, Hama found the prospect of meeting more of the colorful lizards enticing.

Hamask, in the meantime, had begun to warble with delight now that Rebmikh had given her consent. As cautiously as she may have approached an infant of her own kind, she stepped up to Rebmikh and delicately nosed at the little brown in her hands. Hama felt her wher open her mind to the fire lizard, and instead of speech, she sent feelings of warmth and welcome, as well as a plain sense of curiosity too strong for her to mask. Images and emotions flowed more naturally from Hamask than words did, and Hama felt her pleasure at communicating with another being that did the same.

"They do all right with whers then?" Hama asked. "For the most part, I mean," she added, thinking of what the bluehandler had said earlier: Rebmisk was the one who had scared the fire lizards, apparently.

Clay watched the Big Green Friend approach with curiosity, his little head swiveling this way and that as Hamask sent him warm feelings of friendship and greetings. He peeped happily at this, shifting and squiggling with delight when her big green muzzle pressed lightly against him. So happy was he, in fact, that he set his tiny little forepaws on the green's nose, giving her a gentle little pitty-pat as he barraged her with his own flux of happy feelings and little images of fun things he had done recently.

Rebmikh only grinned as she watched her tiny brown interact so well with the gentle green giant; she wished Rebmisk liked the flitters as much! Still, she nodded enthusiastically at Hama's question, making herself comfortable as she resigned herself to being Clay's mobile affection platform.

"Oh, yeah! I mean, if yer wher has the right temperament, anyways. 'Misk ain't a huge fan of 'em, but he ain't aggressive toward 'em aside from the occasional bark ta scare 'em off or shut 'em up. He liked Cress just fine, but the others got ta be a bit much for 'im, I think," she explained, watching as Clay turned his head nearly upside-down as he showed Hamask his adventure stealing a meatroll from the Lower Caverns one day.

"I'd think you'd be fine with Hamask if you wanted one. She looks like she likes th' little guy. 'Course, no tellin' what kinda personality you'll get with a lizard, either. They definitely got their own views on things. Like Clay, here. He's flighty, a little dim--but sweet as can be. Cress is an attention hound, and too smart for her own good sometimes. Pyrite's a right jerk sometimes, and a showoff, but you can count on 'im to do good work if ya flatter him and bribe him with food."

She shrugged, smiling at the small brown in her hands.

"Still, wouldn't trade 'em for th' world. Think I might collect me a whole faire of 'em one of these days, if I can get 'Misk to come around on 'em."

Hamask was stock-still at first, hardly daring to breath lest she blow the delicate little firelizard from his perch. She barely felt his tiny paws on her nose, pattering away, and made a noise of delight in her throat as images streamed from Cress' mind into hers. His adventures set her eyes a-whirling in bright shades of blue and green, and she whrrred softly. Forgetting caution in her amusement, she snorted as Cress related to her the story of his theft of a meatroll, sending a rush of warm air over the lizard.

"She does seem to like him" Hama said thoughtfully, watching her wher and the firelizard. But the thought of getting one of her own curdled a little as Rebmikh continued, reminding her of just how unpredictable their personalities could be.

Hama glanced again toward her shelves, all their contents so neatly arranged. Always, always, she had her job to think about, and it wasn't so much concern for her stores as all the time she spent away in the infirmary, hands constantly working. Little use for a firelizard there, and little time to pay attention to one, much less train one.

"Yes, I think Hamask would love a firelizard," she said, seeing the green's head perk up at her words, "but... I think she's more suited to them than I am. I just don't think I have time to take care of one properly, you know? It's like how I feel about kids," she laughed, then laughed again as Hamask's head drooped.

"Oh, but I don't suppose I could come visit your firelizards whenever I need a fix?" Hama asked Rembikh, more for Hamask than herself, a wry smile on her lips.

Pleeeaaaaase? Hamask locked wide, pleading eyes on Rebmikh.
