Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Marla had scowled over Elmi’s pronouncement, but it was mostly good-natured – they’d debated the issue more than once, over the past several weeks, and had eventually reached an understanding. Marla had learned not to take Elmi’s apathy personally, and Elmi had come to sympathize with the former-wherhandler’s frustration. It wasn’t so very long ago that Marla would have been riding out with the rest of the Troop, and with or without Marsk, she still felt invested in the fight.

Marla was less convinced the whers needed to be rehabilitated here, but she grumbled in reluctant agreement when Elisia threw in her two cents.
“Would rather’ve seen them sent back to Crom,” she muttered into her klah, but her tone suggested she was conceding the point.

Elmi, meanwhile, was taking measured sips out of her own mug – which by now held as much alcohol as klah – and watching Elisia with quiet curiosity.
… I hope his friend is alright.
“Came out of it better’n my stupid brother.” The comment slipped out without her permission; it might have been the spirits, might have been the confession she’d dragged out of Jam the next morning. He’d had some sort of breakdown, waiting on news – had been too caught up in present worries and past traumas. It'd sent him into a full-blown panic attack, though he hadn't realized it until much later, and he’d scared the wits out of Davoth. Sorry though she’d been for him, she’d chewed him out soundly for it.

As to Elisia’s second point, she was nodding before the woman had quite finished; she’d already realized her mistake.
“You're right. Didn’t mean to put em on the same level, like that.” Jam and a few others in his caravan did rather a lot of stealing, she didn’t say, but violence wasn’t something they had a taste for. “I get a little defensive. Holdless didn’t have a good reputation before those idiots went and stirred shaffit up. ‘s much worse, now.”
Though Vaioa had impressed her, she’d admit, by sneaking a bunch of Holdless into the weyrhold, after they'd taken down the rogue handlers. She knew the Holders had wanted them brought to trial – for what, she couldn’t imagine, but that wouldn’t have stopped anyone had Vaioa not offered them all shelter.

Marla, meanwhile, was refilling Elisia's mug with a mumbled 'of course, lovely'. She was also wondering:
“Must be new for you, huh, with all those folks they brought back? I’ll bet they’ve sent some to see you.” Couldn’t be every day Elisia took on holdless – or formerly-holdless – as patients. They were all keeping a low profile, though, for obvious reasons, and they’d been split pretty evenly between the Weyr and Hold. Marla hadn’t gotten a chance to interact with many of them, and her curiosity (nosiness, according to Elmi) was driving her to distraction.

Kynes, tuning out the humans entirely, leaned back against Dewdrop with a contented mrr, and a smug glance over at Epi. Rustling his wings, he dared to drape one partially over the gold, though he settled it across her shoulders very gently. She could shake it off easily, if she wished. He was entirely unconcerned with how it must be damaging his reputation; he and Elmi were physically affectionate, but through nudges and pokes and shakes. Not cuddles. His sudden sweetness was alarming, as far as his human was concerned, but he couldn't have cared less. He’d been woken from a nap, was tired and starry-eyed, and there was a pretty lady doting on him. There were far worse fates, in life.

Elisia hadn't seen the scowl but she'd heard the reluctant grumbling of agreement in the end. It made her smirk and she chuckled. Marla was a good woman and she had strong beliefs and opinions. But she usually knew when to admit when someone was right or had a point. "Crom wouldn't be as kind or lenient on them. It would be better for them to be in a safe and compassionate environment to rehabilitate."

"I'm sorry to hear that. Then, I hope your brother is alright as well." She said with genuine concern in her voice. Sipping her drink she listened to Elmi closely. Unable to read her expression, the tone of her voice was all she could use to monitor Elmi's emotions. "Sadly mostly tend to lump them all together. Just as many still mesh all Holders or people that live in a Weyr. Believing old stereotypes is ridiculous." Elisia smiled kindly in Elmi's direction. "They certainly have made things difficult for other more peaceful Holdless."

She could hear Marla moving to refill her cup. Elisia waited till she couldn't hear the pouring anymore before taking another drink. Marla's words my her shoulders droop slightly. "Yes. They've been sent to me. But most have been...uncooperative. Had one accuse me of trying to brainwash them. There have been a couple good ones though." More sips and her focus turned to Dewdrop and her absence.

The flit was sending constant waves of reassurance to her owner and showing her where she was with the bronze. Dewdrop was enjoying herself, as she always did when meeting new flits. Cuddling seemed like a perfectly fine way to pass the time away while her Elisia talked. Epi on the other hand wasn't liking it one bit. Only thing that kept him from lunging at the arrogant bronze that DARED put his wing around his sister, was Elisia's stern hold on their link. Didn't keep him from growling at the bigger flit. Dewdrop heard the growling though and chirped at her brother to behave.

“Wher’s ent like people, though,” Marla felt compelled to add, even if she agreed with Elisia that Crom wouldn’t do them justice. But then, as far as Marla was concerned, Crom didn’t do any of their whers justice. “Compassion’s all well and good, but they’ll need discipline, too. It’s like with dogs – or dragons. Can’t have two masters.” She didn't know who might come forward to try their hand with the 'rehabilitated' whers, but she didn’t envy them the challenge. The bond with their former handlers wouldn’t have been relinquished willingly, in most cases; it'd be a hard sell, mixing those whers in with the very Troop they’d fought against for so long.

Elmi, only half-listening to Marla, was grateful Elisia had let that comment about her brother go. She asked after him, but the question seemed more polite than curious, and Elmi shrugged, hoping to divert attention away from the topic.
“He’s an idiot, but somehow he muddles through.” The words themselves were hardly charitable, but there was understated affection there, though it was obscured by no small amount of exasperation. She didn’t mind talking about Jam – she had breakfast with him every morning, after all, and by now just about everyone in the Lower Caverns knew him – but Jam’s own investment in the bandit issue was a touchier subject. It wasn’t anyone’s business but his, and she really hadn't meant to bring it up.

Elisia turned back to the subject of Pern’s Holdless, then, and Elmi nodded along, nursing her drink. Marla made sympathetic noises here and there, but it was one of the mindhealer’s last comments that caught Elmi’s attention:
Had one accuse me of trying to brainwash them…
“Can you do that?” Her tone was – appropriately, she thought – skeptical. Not that she thought that sort of thing was a part of Elisia’s job description, but if anyone would know whether it was possible, wouldn’t it be a mindhealer?
“Superstitious nonsense,” Marla put in, around a mouthful of her klah. Elmi, though, shook her head.
“Well most of it is, sure. But I seen a thief charm the coat right off a guy’s back – and that was after he picked his pockets. There’s folks who can… play other people. And when they’re really good, that’s a sort of brainwashing, innit?” She glanced back to Elisia, genuinely curious to hear a professional’s opinion. She didn’t remotely understand how people like Jam did the things they did – never mind how they got away with them – but she’d seen him do it, and knew a sufficiently talented conman could do the seemingly-impossible. She didn’t have any particular talent with people herself, other than for anticipating their needs and fixing their problems, but that was precisely why the subject interested her.

Kynes won himself a hiss from Dewdrop's over-protective brother, and it was obvious he couldn't have been more pleased about it. When the gold cuddled up to him, he relaxed against her with palpably smug satisfaction. His attention soon drifted away from the brown, however, his eyes sliding half-shut as his earlier sleepiness caught up with him. If not for the lady's company, he'd have been impatient for Elmi to give up her chatting and head to bed.

"No. Perhaps they're not. But they are still intelligent creatures. With hearts and minds." No one could ever understand how much she believed that the sentient beasts of Pern, the dragons, the whers, and even the firelizards were more than just animals. Many would say the same. Especially those that were connected to one of them. They had personalities filled with their own likes and dislikes and strengths and fears. The most wonderful thing of it...they could speak. Could express these things in their own ways. Far more than any normal animal could. Firelizards couldn't speak but they could send images and feelings attached to them. "I'd have to disagree about dogs not having two masters but that's another discussion." She said with a bit of a chuckle. "Dragons though...a good example. It does sadden me that if they can't get them to fit in...they'll be sent away or put down. Such a harsh punishment."

"Muddling through is better than not making it at all." Elisia said with a small knowing smile at the affectionate tone she caught beneath Elmi's exasperation. Siblings were often interesting cases. Some were close, some were distant, some seemed to loathe each other. Then there were ones that...were...complex. 'Complex' was putting it mildly too.

Elmi's question made her blink and tilt her head toward the girl's voice as she chuckled. "No. That is a skill I do not have and am not likely to pursue."

Marla's input made her smile as she sipped more of her drink. But she heard the rustling toward Elmi and she tilted her head toward her again to listen. Her words made Elisia raise a brow in curiosity. Elmi had a fair point but she certainly had the definitions crossed.

"There is a difference between brainwashing...and conning people. Brainwashing is another word for indoctrination. It can be forceful, and often is, or something that happens over time. It is radically changing someone's beliefs, thoughts, views, and feelings about something to match your own. To do something of that nature is to break another person down to the point their mind has no choice but to accept the 'reeducation' or snap beyond repair." She said all this as calmly as though she were explaining how to knit a sweater. "It actually can be reversed but it takes patience and very delicate care." Elisia cleared her throat realizing that it was a fairly grim topic and moved on. "Now, conning someone...That takes cleverness, charm, and skill. You have to know how to read people, to 'play' them, as you said. Your example was fairly good too. Some could talk the wherries out of the sky and into a pot if they so chose. Though it does take a good bit of luck too." Elisia smiled softly. "I don't like either method personally. I do value my skill at 'reading people' but I use it to help them. Not take from them."

Dewdrop's chirps got Epi to calm down but he didn't stop glaring at the bronze. He did NOT like that guy. Nope. But Dewdrop was enjoying herself too much. He wasn't going to risk a thrashing from his sister. Dewdrop kept cooing and grooming at Kynes. As if she were TRYING to make him go back to sleep. The whole thing had Elisia feeling very amused.
