Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Spring. Springtime on Pern meant only one thing.

When the Wher troop had attacked and overpowered the Bandits, she had gotten away, without a trace, without even the threat of pursuit. She had lived out in the wilds between Pern's major and minor Holds for so long, she had no doubt that she could do it again, and do it well. And Thread was dying; the autumn was growing colder. Soon, winter was there. She had time to think, to reflect. She could scavenge more easily. She was warier than ever, it was true; there were fewer Holdless than there had been before, due to Vaioa's actions, and she wasn't sure that any of those remaining were those she'd want to associate with.

Winter was cold, and someone less skilled than herself might have struggled. But she knew how to survive, even to thrive, as much as one could in the winter, exposed as she was. She found makeshift shelters and there was food, though it was not a harvest time of year.

But the weather eventually began to warm again, if only slightly. And there was no mistaking it: Spring was here.

That meant one thing.

Thread.

She had a decision to make. Thread would hinder her severely, and without the support of the Bandits like she'd had before... She was forced to admit, though reluctantly, that she was facing an uphill battle.

Already it was becoming clear. So she smothered herself in cloaks and entered a cothold not far from Cienna. What she heard was very interesting: Gossip about Vaioa. Exiled Holdless. That made two instances Vaioa's name had come up in the past few months, this and the Wher Troop that had routed her allies. She left the group of settlements, mind whirring. Whatever she needed... Vaioa was at the heart of it.

She traveled quickly, though usually at night, hiding during the day. She was determined not to be seen. She wasn't sure what she would find at Vaioa. But she would find out.

The air was continuing to grow warm during the day, and finally, she knew she was close. So she left while the sun was still out, enjoyed its rays on her skin. She had not done this, so close to civilization, in some time.

Then it was looming before her: the collapsed crater, the Hold tucked into one corner. The watchdragon perched on the heights of the cone in the center, hide a flashy blue glinting in the distance. Here it was: Hold, or Weyr? She pinched her tongue between her teeth in a momentary display of uncertainty, and then began to descend the sloped path into the bowl. She would have to start with Weyr.

The sun was near setting by the time she completed the walk, and then she had found a fold in the stone, and slipped inside. Whatever happened next, she felt certain that she would at least know what had happened in her absence.

The corridor branched into others just like it, lit by glows. Cayliss was reminded forcibly of the cave system she and the other Holdless had inhabited, before Vaioa came to slaughter them all. Her mouth thinned at this memory but otherwise she showed no signs of displeasure. Although she hadn't a clue where she was going, she pressed onward, following the glow-lit path.

All of a sudden, she was standing at the entrance to an enormous cavern. There were long tables, and a few sparse bodies scattered around. Hearths dotted the edge of the room. And unmistakably... Cayliss's eyes landed on Becca.

This was it. This was where they had gone. Those who hadn't been exiled. Vaioa had taken them in, after defeating the Bandits.

Why Becca? Well, probably because Becca had been useless. Unable to fight, and unwilling. And hindered by her baby. Perhaps because she had not been a threat, in the slightest.

Becca stood from the hearth she was cleaning, and Cayliss saw that she looked slightly more filled out than before, although she still had a hollow, fearful look about her as her eyes swept the room. Then they landed on her, and froze.

Becca felt the wind leave her body at once. Pip, reacting to her sudden and intense terror, screeched and wheeled away, fleeing somewhere Between. Becca didn't even have the energy to wonder where the Green had gone.

There was a ghost standing at the end of the entrance to the Dining Hall, and that ghost looked very much like Cayliss.

Becca was aware of the blood rushing in her ears and realized that the world was spinning. Gripping the mantel, she forced her lungs open with one deep breath, than another. She felt unable to react-- she did not know what reaction would be appropriate.

Cayliss stood for another moment, gathering herself, and doing some quick thinking. Then she entered the cavern and approached Becca.

Becca, for her part, was white as a sheet and her eyes were nearly rolling in terror. Cayliss managed a sarcastic smile. "Hey, Becca. How are you doing."

Becca didn't respond for a moment, mouth working silently.

Cayliss glanced around. "So, I heard that Vaioa was taking in all of the Holdless. Ex-Holdless. Those who weren't exiled, right?"

Becca made a kind of a choking sound.

Cayliss schooled her features into an expression of concern. "Becca? Are you okay? You don't look very well."

Becca exhaled and the words came out in a breathy whisper. "Where did you come from?"

Cayliss shrugged. She couldn't tell Becca the truth; that she had chosen to remain Holdless for a time. "I had trouble finding my way back, that's all. Took me longer than expected."

Becca didn't answer this, just turned her gaze away as though watching a scene play out in the near distance.

Cayliss tilted her head. "So. Do we have homes here? Do I have a home here?"

Becca seemed to return to the present, reluctantly. "I don't know. I had to stay in the Infirmary, and all sorts of people talked to me before they'd let me stay. They don't want any criminals. Only... those of us who were..." She trailed off.

Cayliss couldn't help the beginnings of a triumphant smirk, though she quickly turned it into a bright smile. Yes. She'd always known that Becca would be useful to her eventually. "Then I can stay, right? I am not a criminal. You can tell them, can't you?" She pleaded.

Becca seemed hesitant to respond. "Yes, only..." She trailed off again.

"What is it?" Cayliss asked promptly.

"I think it's too late in the day now," Becca said softly, apologetically.

"Well, I'll stay the night, and you can help me take care of it in the morning," Cayliss said sweetly. "Look, Becca, I'm sorry I scared you, but-- I've been traveling for so long, and-- you can help me, can't you?"

Becca shivered slightly, then nodded, though it seemed fairly halfhearted. "Yes. Alright. I'll show you where the guest rooms are. You can stay there tonight until we... figure things out tomorrow."

Cayliss felt a triumphant crowing rising in her chest. She kept a cool exterior, though, and managed a warm smile. "Oh, thank you, Becca," she said, and clasped the girl's hands-- she seemed too fragile to tolerate an embrace right now. "You're a true friend."

She was, Becca thought, as she led Cayliss through the Lower Caverns. Then why did she feel so queasy about Cayliss's arrival?
