Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Gray dragon wings speckled with white dots were fanned out in a languid manner to soak up some sun. Ebruinth and her rider had only finished drilling with their wing and the gray wished she could take a long hard-earned nap, but her rider had different plans. I don’t know where I went wrong with you, Eb grumbled from her lying position on her dragon shelf. The gray sighed, settled her chin on an extended forepaw, and continued, You used to be healthily invested in rest. Now you always want to do things.

Cait tugged off her leather flight-cap and goggles and neatly deposited the two articles into the trunk at the foot of her bed. She gave a laugh at her dragon’s comment and nodded. “I guess I just have more energy now! And don’t act like you don’t love being a Weyrlingmaster. We have the great honor of teaching Vaioa’s future riders. Plus we learn as much from them as they do from us. And I know how much you loooove learning things!” The gray rider had sauntered out onto her dragon’s shelf and scratched her shoulder affectionately. “And don’t worry; a little extra work won’t kill you.”

‘Guess not or else I’d be dead by now.

“Since when are you a drama queen?”

Since we became Masters.

“Fair enough. Anyway, I think I’d like to get to know, hmm, oh say, Vharra today!” The newly impressed blue rider seemed to Cait to be somewhat outgoing with a strong desire to impress her teacher, but other than that Cait feared she didn’t know her much. She wanted to change that. With Jasper, the gray rider had never been able to bond with any of her students. Sure, she adored all of them, but from now on she wanted to make it a point to have personal meetings with her students away from class. This way she could help them develop and enrich their learning experience with one-on-one tactics. The method was untested as of yet, though, but she believed a good teacher ought to know her pupils.

Ebruinth, understanding her role in all this, immediately reached out to the near three-month-old Nisoeth. Youngling, bring your rider with you to my weyr. You’re not in trouble; mine just wants to get to know you and yours. So come ready to answer questions. Ebruinth finished by giving instructions on how exactly to find the entrance to their quarters.

Cait knew that around this time Agate was probably finishing up their midday meal. That meant they’d be expected to attend a lesson next, but Cait figured her fellow master’s wouldn’t mind her stealing a student for a while.

As she waited for the blue pair to arrive Cait strolled back into the inner part of her private weyr. There was a sitting area where she and Vharra could get comfortable to chat and Nisoeth could either sit with them or join Ebruinth on the dragon shelf to soak up some afternoon sun.

Ebruinth wants us to come to her weyr. Hers desires to speak with you. A sleepy Nisoeth blinked his tired eyes, belly full and content, and conveniently forgot to mention that the pair had explicitly been told they were not in trouble. He swished his tail back and forth, annoyed that he would not be able to nap after his meal as he had planned.

"Weyrlingmaster Cait and Ebruinth? Shards, I wonder what it's about... Oh man, if it's about the 'midnight snacks' after curfew that was totally your idea." the blueweyrling sat straight up from the couch she had been reclining on with a start.

Was not. I told you to just stay in. the blue's tail swished more forcefully now, 'accidentally' knocking Vharra's knees.

"Ow! Okay, it wasn't you, but you still came with me." Vharra sighed as she laced up her boots. "We should get going, then. Don't want to keep the Weyrlingmaster waiting!"

My mistake. As usual! the dragonet huffed, pretending to be offended.

Nisoeth was out the door of their room before Vharra had a chance to finish pulling on her other boot. Almost tripping out the door, she followed the sassy little blue tailfork down the hallway. The blue led the way to Cait and Ebruinth's weyr, with his girl close behind.

"I'm glad you know where we're going, Nisoeth. This place is expansive." Vharra remarked--she didn't usually get the chance to check out the full-fledged riders' weyrs.

If I let you lead the way you'd have us going in circles all day, lost. if dragons could grin, Nisoeth would be beaming. He had, in his short time, grown very fond of jokes and teasing his rider as she did other humans. He took solace in the fact that his girl always knew he was not serious. Other dragons did not always get the distinction, he had learned quite quickly. Finally reaching their destination, Nisoeth reached out to Ebruinth. We are here!

Vharra greeted Cait warmly as she followed Nisoeth into the greyrider's weyr.

"Weyrlingmaster! Good to see you, I hope you and Ebruinth are well!" The possibility of being in trouble still nagged at the girl. "Listen, if this is about any missing meatrolls from the kitchens, I have NO idea about that--"

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
As the students entered it was Ebruinth who replied to the initial greeting. Welcome Nisoeth, Vharra. The gray had her head situated so she could see inside the weyr through the joining door. We are well, thank you. I hope the same holds true for you and your’s. Eb could have complained about how tired she felt, but had the decency not to. It wouldn’t do for a teacher to gripe to one of her pupils.

Cait was smiling and welcoming at first, but her expression soon became puzzled as the girl mentioned kitchens and missing food. “Relax,” she said not unkindly, wondering what on Pern the short girl was babbling about. “I just called you here to get to know you. Y’know, have a little one on one time to chat.” Cait was intrigued by the possibility that Vharra might have an interesting story to tell. By coming in denying something it likely meant she was hiding something. But chances were getting her to spill the beans wouldn’t be easy unless Cait could gain her trust. She’d need to get the girl to realize this was a safe zone and anything she said would be kept between the two of them. Well, four of them.

Nisoeth you are welcome to join me out here on my shelf. Rukbat feels wonderful on my wings and you might enjoy it too. What she didn’t tell the blue was that if he joined her she was going to have him doing wing exercises.

Cait nodded and gestured for Vharra to follow her to the little sitting area. “You are, of course, welcome to sit in here if you prefer, though, Nisoeth. The choice is yours.” Cait took a seat on her sofa, looked to Vharra, and patted the cushion next to her. “Sit, sit. Make yourself comfortable. Would you like some Klah or water? I have both.” She waved her hand at the little end table which supported two matching pitchers and two mugs. “Help yourself!”

Cait had decided on a nice simple question to kick things off. “So tell me about yourself. What made you decide to become a dragon rider?”

Nervous laughter erupted from the blueweyrling at Cait's command to relax. Her face flushed bright red as she attempted to calm her anxiety giggles.

"Of course! Of course. Nisoeth forgot to mention that..." Vharra made an exasperated face and shuffled to the couch to sit down beside the greyrider, crossing her legs as she did so. Upon the mention of refreshments, the girl's face lit up. "Water would be great, thank you!"

As his rider poured herself a glass of water and made initial small-talk with the Weyrlingmaster, Nisoeth slowly pawed into the main room of Cait's weyr. Unsure, he glanced first at Ebruinth, then at Vharra, and then wordlessly repeated this until his bonded bespoke him.

Nis, you should go out with Ebruinth. Go relax, maybe Ebruinth will have some sage wisdom to help you on your way to dragonhood! Smirking as her dragonet let out what sounded like a small croak in protest, Vharra urged him again. Nisoeth grudgingly turned and walked towards the grey's shelf, dragging his tail and wingtips in annoyance.

Hello, Ebruinth. the blue paused, not certain on how to proceed. The weather! There was always the weather if you were unsure of a conversation topic-- at least, that's what His would do! It's... a lovely day outside, indeed.

Inside the greypair's weyr, Vharra was beginning to relax. The Weyrlingmaster was very nice, afterall!

"What made me want to become a dragonrider... hmm." brows furrowed, she leaned her head back to look at the ceiling as she thought. "I guess hearing my older brother talk about our uncle back home at Rubikon-- he was a bronzerider! Quite the adventurer, too. That is, of course, if Vhallir wasn't spinning a tale like usual... You know, on second thought, those stories probably weren't true. They were still inspiring though! Well, that coupled with the fact that my mother was oh so very against me becoming a Candidate. She is kind of old-fashioned." Vharra grimaced at the thought. She and her mother were never close, but they were not enemies either. The dragonrider dream of hers had always been a huge point of contention between them. Feeling like she was on a tangent, the bluerider took a sip of her water and eagerly watched Cait's face for any reaction.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Cait had assumed Vharra was outgoing and, as it turned out, her insight had been spot on. Not every Agate student would be quite so talkative, so the master made sure to enjoy the lengthy explanation the girl gave.

With bright interest she listened. However, when the girl mentioned her mother Cait’s eyes saddened slightly. Her own mother had passed away a few turns ago and she still hadn’t forgiven herself for not being there during her final moments. She hadn’t even known of her passing until a seven day after the fact when her brother showed up to share the devastating news.

It would have been easy to tear up in that moment, but how would that look in front of poor Vharra? Be strong, she told herself and poured herself a glass of water to help distract herself.

Ebruinth, feeling her rider’s struggle, deftly lent her strength. The pain was… uncomfortable for her, but she could cope with it much better than Cait could. She was more detached, thankfully. Just take a breath. You are fine. Focus on something else. Talk about how you also have a brother.

Luckily, the weyrling’s eyes had been focused on the ceiling so Cait was pretty sure she hadn’t noticed her small moment distress. But now her eyes were on her and she forced herself to grin. “Ah, yes. Brothers tend to stretch the truth sometimes as a way to tease their sisters. I have a younger brother, you know. He is a brown handler here. Growing up he and I were close, but that didn’t stop him from being annoying from time to time.” Ah, good. She was feeling better already. No breaking down today! “At any rate, I suppose whether or not the tales were true is irrelevant, hmm? You’re a rider yourself now and you can look forward to adventures of your own!”

Cait was half-tempted to tell Vharra she should do her best to get along with her mother because a mother is gone, she is gone and there is no going back. No second chances. But that would be a rather heavy conversation and she didn’t want to chase the girl away. So instead she nodded and said, “Mother’s generally only want what is best for their children, even if we don’t always understand. She probably worries for you and wishes you had chosen a… safer path.” Vharra mentioned her mother was “old-fashioned”. Not all that surprising. Holders tended to be more narrow-minded than weyr folk. “I hope you can find a way to work around the disagreement, though. Family is important, no matter how bothersome.”

With little vigor Ebruinth rose from her lying position as the little blue dragon joined her. She snorted at the way he was carrying himself. That wouldn’t do. Now Nis was saying hello again and talking about the weather, which amused the gray. Was he shy? Or uncomfortable? Perhaps both. You seem to be growing well, she observed in a rather removed manner as her head snaked down to assess the youngling more closely. Well proportioned. Sharp claws. Healthy hide. Seems your girl has been taking good care of you. These were all things Eb looked for in her students during lessons but she felt it couldn’t hurt to double check him now. Your development is perfect, but there is always room for improvement, hmm? Her blue eye gave an audible click as her lid closed in a wink. Let me see your wingspan. That’s it, really stretch them out as far as you can. Now, raise them up over yourself. Try to make the highest tips touch.

“So you grew up in Rubikon? Were you searched from home, then? How much time did you spend as a Candidate before Impressing?”

At Cait's mention of her mother, Vharra choked a bit on her water, realizing she had misspoken. Setting the glass down, she brushed her loose hair from her face as she sat up straight on the couch.

"My mother passed away a little after I turned 18." The memory was uncomfortable but not devastating. She had plenty of time before her mother's death to prepare, but somehow that hadn't been enough time. The two had always butted heads, but there was still love there. The bluerider's voice was very flat when she spoke. "She was real sick there at last. Infection finally got her.

Vharra felt a pang of guilt suddenly, for defying her mother's wishes post-mortem. She had never really discussed her feelings on the subject, even to Suravhar... She was happy that the Weyrlingmaster seemed so invested in her, it made opening up to the greyrider very easy--which was saying a lot for a girl who bottles up her emotions as securely as Vharra.

"I guess it is okay in the end though. My father's brother had been a dragonrider and he saw how it changed his life for the better. He wanted me to have a chance at a better life too." A smile returned to her face as she considered Cait's questions. "I was Searched at home, and I had just turned 18 too-- pretty late in life, huh?! I got lucky. Big blue Emmeth and Searchrider Luca, to be specific! I saw them recently, it was great, they are so great."

Realizing she was talking very rapidly out of a mixture of nervousness and excitement, Vharra paused for a moment to consider Cait's reaction before continuing.

"I got here not long after... had to leave my little brother behind though. I'm not so sure he's coming to join me at the Weyr afterall... Maybe it's for the best, since I'm pretty busy nowadays. Nisoeth found me on the first time I had the privilege to stand for a hatching. Pretty much the best day of my life, but you know that already!"

--

Nisoeth, upon Ebruinth's snort at his posture, straightened himself out considerably.

Thank you. I grew them myself. Mine the best she can for me.

Nisoeth obediently spread his wings at the grey's request, crooning as he enjoyed the pleasant stretch and warm light shining in. Wingtips were almost all touching now, and Rukbat's light made the ripples of color shine a bright tropical blue.

Like this? The little blue dragon's tail swished back and forth, eager to please.
