Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

(Fuzzytimed to Winter 1264)

It had been two months now, and Becca still wasn't sure where she stood with Vaioa. Was it her new home? She didn't feel like she belonged, though the Healers had reassured her that this would take time-- after the amount of time she'd spent Holdless, belonging anywhere would not come quickly. She had, of course, been given the option to move. But where would she go? Vaioa at least wasn't asking her any awkward questions about where she had come from. Well, they knew where she had come from-- they just didn't care. She wasn't sure if she'd get that treatment anywhere else.

But she wasn't sleeping well. She didn't feel safe, and she was horribly lonely, even though she had leave to visit her son as freely as possible. He had struggled at first, but eventually had adjusted to the new living situation as well as a child his age could adjust. She missed having his small body close during the night, though, when even in her sleep she could be certain of his safety. Too often, her dreams-- if she had any-- were restless and broken.

One winter day, while she was washing dishes in the kitchens, one of her fellow Lower Caverns residents appeared in the doorway. "Becca," she said quickly. "We need scraps of meat, quick!"

Becca was left blinking and wiping her arms dry, then dumbly went to retrieve some bowls with meat scraps in them. What was going on?

When she brought them out of the kitchens, though, she saw a small crowd gathered around a table and approached curiously.

"Finally!" Someone said, and snatched a bowl of meat out of her hands. "I want to get a Bronze!"

Intrigued, Becca edged closer. Hands intercepted her for meat scraps. Becca became aware, suddenly, of a hum filling the room, and dozens of winged creatures-- tiny dragons?-- circling overhead. She blinked, startled. These were firelizards. She'd seen them from afar in her time at the Weyr, and occasionally in her life as a Holdless. Then, this was... a Hatching?

Her suspicions were confirmed as the noise of the hatching reached her ears: the humming rising to a crescendo, the shattering of eggshells, and the screeches and creels of the hungry, newly hatched firelizards.

And then, suddenly, and quite unexpectedly, she felt something. She jumped and looked down.

There was a firelizard, standing in front of her on the table, and looking up at her intently. She stared at it, dumbfounded. Then it did that think again. She shuddered. It felt like the creature was probing her mind.

Then it gave chirp that was somehow both hungry and demanding. She jumped again and looked down at her hands, which were still full of meat scraps.

And suddenly, the lizard was there, curling down in the bowl, devouring the scraps faster than she would have thought possible. She shuddered as another new sensation rippled through her mind-- the green's small consciousness curling around hers. She found that she was breathing raggedly. What had just happened?

The hatching was over, suddenly. The crowd before her was dispersing rapidly, chattering eagerly. The humming had died down and the other firelizards had departed. The green firelizard was still curled up in the bowl in her hands, chirping sleepily but emanating happiness.

Becca swallowed. Was she even allowed to Impress a firelizard? But nobody was paying her any attention, least of all scolding her. She took a breath and looked down at the Green.

The little firelizard's hide was a mossy forest green, but on the top of her head and down her spine to her tailtips was a stipe of brighter, iridescent green. This color was matched in her wingsails. And on her abdomen and hips, where the wingsails met her body, a faint vein of yellowy-bronze shone through. She reached down to stroke this vein and the lizard reacted with something akin to a giggle, curling away from her touch.

Becca held her breath and looked up. Was it really okay? What had she gotten into? She didn't know the first thing about caring for a firelizard.

But then, she was in a Weyr. What better place to learn? As the firelizard fell asleep, Becca felt a sense of contentment emitting from it. She picked up the bowl, firelizard and all, and retreated back to the kitchens. She didn't know what she was getting into. But she would adjust. A new feeling floated out from the Green as she slept in the bowl. Friendship. Despite herself, Becca smiled. A friend. She could use a friend around here.
