Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

A Winter Celebration! [Open]; Second Day of Winter, 1264, Evening

Mother of Whers
At last, winter had come. Sweet, beautiful, Thread-free winter. Those delightful few months where living was guaranteed, clothes didn't constantly reek of sulfur, and scars healed up into fashionable conversation pieces. Last winter, Luca had celebrated the turn of seasons with Emmeth, a drink (or ten), and her firelizards. This winter, she had commandeered the largest common room to throw a celebration of sorts for the riders of Vaioa. It was better than holing up somewhere alone, and Emmeth approved. It had taken some persuading to get the kitchen staff to help out, but eventually they'd managed to scrounge together some snacks and drinks. A trio of harpers was playing in the corner, a festive, fast-paced jig for those who'd chosen to use the center of the room as an impromptu dancefloor. And it wasn't only riders. Candidates, staff, weyrfolk, all types had drifted into the large room, lured by the noise and drinks.

We did good, eh, Gale? She sipped at her beer, which had gotten lukewarm. Nasty shaffit. Gale hissed, coiling around her neck. She tolerated it, proof of her good mood. But why shouldn't she be in high spirits? They had made it through another Turn of the Pass! The three of them were alive and had all their limbs. Their friends were all safe. A letter from her brother's green flit, arrived that morning, assured her that he and his dragon, and their father, were all right. It was good. Winter was good. Not even the food shortage had destroyed them, though she knew she'd have to take Emmeth hunting to make up for the snacks she'd procured. It was worth it.

You should say something. Emmeth had been quiet for most of the evening, basking in the pleasant atmosphere outside. He, too, was glad for the winter reprieve from fighting.

Say something? What, like a toast? Luca wrinkled her nose, flicking a speck off the sleeve of her gold shirt. Nice fabric. An early nameday gift from N'ik, sent with his letter. Words are your forte, Em. Not mine.

You underestimate yourself, Mine. Just say something. For the fallen.

A somber look crossed Luca's face. The fallen. Those who had not made it. She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling Gale's red-tinted eyes on her. Fine. Clearing her throat, she whistled sharply, trying to silence the room. That failed, and so she huffed and tried again. "Oi! Shut up a moment, will you?!" Gale punctuated the demand with a brassy, high-pitched roar. That did the trick. Once the room fell quiet, Luca paled slightly. As much as she loved socializing, she hated being the ultimate center of attention. Drinking more beer, she wet her lips and shifted nervously. "Emmeth, the sentimental bastard, wants me to say a few words." She chuckled before sobering. "We survived another Turn of Thread. Which is good! Really good! Congratulations to us! But...not everyone did. So...a toast to our fallen brothers and sisters. May they rest easy in the cold black." Raising her mug, she gulped down a mouthful and wiped her mouth.

"Okay, get back to fardling around!" And take your fecking eyes off me. A pensive look on her face, she raised her mug again, more subtly. Rest easy, P'tal. Shumath.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Amarisha
Tag; Ashwyn, slight T'vir mention

“May they rest easy in the cold black,” Amarisha murmured sadly, echoing Luca’s sentiment while raising her own mug of beer. She had arrived moments ago. Maneuvering through the gathered crowd of people with her pregnant belly hadn’t been easy, but she had managed to make it to the refreshments table without too much trouble. She had opted for a strong drink, knowing celebrations were always most fun if one was at least slightly tipsy. As soon as she had retrieved her beverage the speech had commenced.

The candidate took a sip of the bitter drink, briefly considering how appropriate the blue rider’s words had been. There was an apt amount of respect for the fallen, but Luca hadn’t burdened everyone with a blanket of depression. The party simply roared back to life after a few moments of silence and Ama’s spirits bounced back with the clamor.

“Too bad this isn’t T’vir’s brew,” Ama thought aloud while eyeing the mug in her hand. The drink wasn’t bad as far as beer went, but weyrling T’vir would have packed more of a punch into the flavor.

The brown drink sloshed as its holder made her way around the large room. She was looking for Ashwyn. “Hello,” she would sweetly say to those she passed. “Excuse please, pregnant lady coming through,” she would say to clusters of people in order to break them up. For some reason she found herself on the receiving end of many odd looks. Why did people seem to be silently judging her? She shrugged it off, never one to worry long about the opinions of others.

Eventually she found her friend. “Ash!” she called over the music, squeezing herself between two bodies. “Glad you could make it! Isn’t this great?” Ama held her drink away and reached with her free arm to force a half hung on Ash. “There are refreshments over there, did you see? You can have a sip of my beer if you want to make sure you like it. It’s so-so.” She twisted her wrist up and down in a so-so manner.

“Oh, fardles!” she gasped, bi-colored eyes going wide. “I shouldn’t be drinking should I??” she thrust her drink into Ash’s chest. “Fardle me! I’m really terrible at this!” Her free hand started rubbing her belly nervously. “I only had a few sips. That shouldn’t do no harm, right?”

Thoia, tag Luca, open

Thoia was weyrbred and raised. She knew the significance of winter. She was certain that for holds and crafters, especially in cooler climes, winter was miserable, dangerous even. But for the weyr, winter was a respite. Thread did not fall and Riders and ground crews were safe, and those who cared for Riders or people in the ground crews got to go months without worrying. To the weyr, Winter was wonderful.

If she were honest, Thoia was surprised that Luca had organized all of this. She had been looking for Luca when the woman made the toast. She raised her own glass in agreement, taking a moment to remember, before moving over to her. "You did well. Both in setting this up and just now."

She smiled warmly to her, even as Hope sat up straighter on her shoulder at seeing Gale, as if challenging the other flit to do anything about her presence. Shhh, behave dear. He's not done anything yet. She reached a hand up to scratch under the green flit's chin.

"How are you? And of course you, Gale? And how's Emmeth?"

Michiru, tag Taz, open

Of course Michiru had brought her violin with her, though it was in its case to keep it protected if there was any jostling. No, she was not a Master, but she was better than good even still on her violin, and she would hope to get an opportunity to play. She had set it with the other instruments, knowing it would be safe.

After the toast, once the music started again, she turned to Taz, eyes dancing as she grinned, "You know, you should really ask a girl to dance."

Ashwyn - Tag Amarisha:

It was little known by most people, but Ashwyn really did enjoy celebrations. She didn't like the people, or so she had convinced herself, but she liked the atmosphere of a party. She absolutely loved the music. And of course there was music. Tiang had begged her to come, so that she could "carry his case for him." His leg had not fully healed yet; the healers said it never would. Ashwyn couldn't have denied him assistance, even though the rest of their family were attending to celebrate Den'eld's and Quentith's living through another Turn. And, well, Amarisha had asked her to come. Ash couldn't find it in herself to deny her...acquaintance? Friend? She wasn't quite sure what the other candidate was.

After offering Tiang his case, Ashwyn had wandered off to get herself something to drink. After surveying the available snacks and beverages, she had had to concede that that obnoxious bluerider had done a fair job in this celebration. It would raise morale, at the very least. Something that any aspiring leader could appreciate. The toast came as she was helping herself to a mug of ale. Ashwyn turned to where the bluerider was standing, and she bowed her head in respect for the dead. Even she was not heartless enough to ignore a toast to the fallen. The party resumed almost immediately after the short toast, and Ashwyn was happy to feel the despondency fade back into jolly music and banter.

Ash sipped at her ale, pulling a face when she realized that she didn't quite like it as much as she had thought. It wasn't in her nature to waste something, particularly in a time of shortage, and so she continued to stomach it in small quantities, all the while eyeing the harpers with longing. Perhaps, tonight, she would join them for a spell. Tiang caught her eye, winking as he sang a bawdy tune, and Ashwyn grinned her special "family grin," raising her mug to him. I wonder where Asira's gotten off to. Den'eld and Wynonis were likely dancing, and Ashnis would probably be with some of his candidate friends. Ashwyn looked around, trying to pick her elder sister's beautiful face out of the crowd.

Instead of Asira, she got Amarisha. The pregnant woman shouted her name, and that was all the warning she got before she was forced into a half-hug. Bristling, she held still until she was released, so caught up in her own surprise that she did not hear a word that Amarisha was saying. Not until "beer" penetrated her mind's haze. Eyes widening in horror, Ashwyn nearly dropped her own mug. Thankfully, Amarisha seemed to realize her own error. Ashwyn quickly accepted the other woman's cup, passing it off to a rather startled-looking passerby. "Dimglow, you need to be more careful," she hissed, fighting the urge to touch the other woman's belly. "A few sips shouldn't cause any damage, but really, you can't be so reckless! Didn't you listen to the healers at all when they warned you against drinking?!" Her voice wasn't have as harsh as it could have been, and her anger was more out of concern than annoyance at Ama's moment of stupidity. She cared about the unborn child, as anyone would have. Admittedly, she cared about her sort-of-friend, too.

Luca of Blue Emmeth - Tag Thoia:

The pensive look faded fast from Luca's face when she heard a voice that she had grown rather fond of over the past three or four months. Even as Gale hissed irritably, Luca turned with a warm smile on her face. "Hey, doll. I wasn't expecting to see you here." It certainly wasn't an unpleasant surprise. Gale, don't you dare cause any trouble, she warned, noticing how he uncurled from around her neck to sit on her shoulder. His stance was territorial, almost aggressive, yet somehow resigned as Hope sat up in a challenging manner. He knew that he could not pick a fight without getting into big trouble.

Cocking her head to the side, Luca pressed her lips together for a moment, considering Thoia's compliment. After a moment, she shrugged. "I didn't do anything, doll." She had only helped spark the celebration, after all. The attendants and the kitchen staff had done all of the hard work. Can't believe I once thought of those people as worthless, Em. They do a lot of fecking shaffit around here.

The blue rumbled his amusement, viewing Thoia through his bonded's eyes. He could not recall speaking to the candidate, though he was sure that Luca had introduced them. Even with that lack of interpersonal conversation between them, he had decided a while ago that he liked the young woman. She made his bonded warm. Not that he had any intention of pointing that out to his rider. Tell her that I send my regards.

Sure, sure. Luca nodded, though the blue was nowhere in sight. It was simply habitual. The whole while, she simply stared at Thoia, a little half-smile on her face. Gale was not pleased, especially when the not-his-food-source spoke to him. A hiss was all that Thoia got in response from him, and he flew off to perch on a rafter high above. Luca snorted, her expression almost apologetic. "Believe it or not, he's in a good mood. As for Emmeth and I, we're alive and very well. He 'sends his regards,' by the way." Her nose scrunched up as she affected an upper class accent. You're so formal, Emmy. It's ridiculous.

I will take formal over idiotic any day, Mine.

Chuckling, Luca moved forward and dipped her head to kiss the candidate soundly on the lips. "And how are you, my dear? Did you enjoy the egg Touching?" She beamed at Hope, leaning back so that she could properly scratch the little green's head. Possessive jealousy emanated from Gale, but she had long since learned to squash his emotions down.

Tasem of Blue Zoranth - Tag Michiru:

The toast had been solemn, but not particularly sad for Tasem. They did not yet know anyone at Vaioa good enough to miss the deceased, though they could respect the dead. If any of their old friends at Ista had passed on since they'd left, no one had sent word to them. As they raised their glass of wine, they thought mostly of their birth father, and then they allowed the atmosphere to sweep them back into cheerfulness. Affecting surprise, they grinned right back at Michiru, draping an arm over her shoulders. "Trying to get rid of me before the violin's even out, my blue?" A falsely-upset huff puffed out from their lips.

With a wicked gleam in their eyes, they glanced at the harpers' stage. "You know, I could always go up there and sing. We could be a duet. Shells, I'll even run up and get Nix, add some of his singing to the mix." Hey, Zoranth, did you hear that rhyme? I thought you might appreciate it.

I can appreciate it, the blue agreed with a laugh, tuning into his rider's thoughts. He wanted to hear the music, and while he was a runt, even he could not fit inside the lower caverns. Tasem's ears were the next best thing.

I'll pay extra attention to the harpers, Tasem promised. Zoranth did not even have to ask, but they still wanted to assure him that he would hear all the music he wanted tonight. Zoranth hummed happily in response, curling up with his brother and settling down to fully enjoy the harpers' songs.

Deklan - Open:

Business had brought Deklan to the Weyr. It was nothing big, really; one of the master cooks had written him about looking at some pans. And so, he had left his forge to make the short trip to Vaioa Weyr. As his business had led him to the kitchens, it was difficult for him to miss the preparations for the little winter shindig. Curiosity piqued, he had asked the master cook, who, with a smile, explained that some of the riders wanted to begin the Threadfree months with a party. Well, that was something that Deklan could drink to. As a man who played his part in Threadfalls--both in helping make the agenothree tanks and wielding them in the groundcrew--Deklan was happy to celebrate the winter with the dragonriders and their loved ones. It had not been difficult to find himself a room in the Weyr caverns for the night. The stablehands had taken care of his runnerbeast, and Viz had fallen asleep in his rental room after being fed, so, when his work with the pans was done, Deklan found his way to the common room where the celebration was held.

It was more than he had expected. There was music, and food, and drinks. Oh, sweet Faranth, there was beer! Deklan helped himself, filling a mug with the frothy brown liquid. He drank easily, fully aware of his limits. He would not get blackout drunk; that in itself was a feat, considering his size, and it would take more alcohol than was his fair share here. But he allowed himself to enjoy what he could, and as the dark woman near the harpers' stage called for silence and spoke of the dead, Deklan raised his mug in tribute. Rest easy, dragonriders. Men and women of the crews. The giant of a man finished his first mug and ambled back to the long table near the wall, intent on refilling. He pushed his way easily through the crowd, which parted before his beefy six-foot-five frame.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Ama smiled sheepishly and scratched the back of her head as she absorbed Ashwyn’s scolding. She knew she deserved it and was also inwardly reprimanding herself. Dimglow! she thought as her shoulders drooped in shame.

But at least her friend agreed that a few sips should be mostly harmless. “Eh, I mean yeah I kind’a sort’a listened to ‘em…” Ama blushed with shame. Apparently she should have paid more careful attention to the healers. Shards, she fancied herself something of a healer! This slip up was unacceptable. Being careless with her own health was one thing… “I’m so sorry,” the candidate murmured, looking down at her belly. “Please forgive me. This won’t happen again!”

After a short moment Ama lifted her eyes and fixed Ashwyn with a mismatched stare. “My stupidity aside, hi! Glad you could make it! I wasn’t sure you would. You seemed so hesitant earlier. Guess that’s just your way, huh?” Ama rubbed her belly absently as she spoke and her eyes slowly drifted the musicians. “Did you bring your guitar with you? I’ve never heard you play before. I bet you are excellent! My baby and I would love for you to serenade us!”

Thoia, tag Luca, slight tag Ama and Ash

"You initiated it, and that is something, Luca." She grinned. "Don't sell yourself short." Though Thoia did thoroughly appreciate if Luca was referring to the kitchen and lower caverns staff. They had done a great job of pulling it all together.

Thoia looked around, smiling, and tilted her head as she noticed Ashwyn and Amarisha. Good, at least Ash could be a reasonable human being to someone. And while Thoia suspected it was the shared experience of pregnancy interrupting candidatehood, she was still glad to see it.

She bit her lip as she turned her attention back to Luca, and of course then also to Gale. It was clear that the Bronze did not care for her, though she half suspected it was because of Hope and Hope's refusal to be cowed, even as young as she was. In fact the green was sitting up straighter, attempting to be as every inch as noble as a gold! That made it far more difficult not to chuckle.

Instead she smiled, "That's sweet of him. And I'm glad you and he are doing well. I'm well, excited, of course. And the touching was good. As well as it always is. So exciting saying hello to the little ones and wondering if yours is in there." And hoping. Always hoping.

Michiru, tag Tasem

"Playing dim tonight?" Her eyes danced at Taz's false injury. "Though I suppose, if you want to ask someone other than me to dance, I won't hate watching." They might be partnered but they were not exclusive for all their seeming closeness and appearance to the otherwise.

Because, at least for now, effectively you are. But you are also happy, so there is no wrong. Do let me know if the music's worth listening too?

Michiru smirked a bit. It's pretty. Stop being snobbish and biased. They were fully trained, but Ytath held his bias closely, and Michiru found it flattering enough to allow him it.

"You could, love, if we wanted to clear the party." She chuckled. "You've talents enough that if you could sing well enough to be on stage, it would be quite unfair. Now...speaking of those talents...you are going to ask me to dance, aren't you?"

Ashwyn - Tag Amarisha:

Ashwyn nodded, pleased that Amarisha could understand the gravity of what could have been. "Maybe next time, you can actually listen to them, instead of 'kinda-sorta,' hmm?" she scolded. Amarisha looked down at her rather large stomach, and Ashwyn followed her gaze. Her expression softened incredibly when the other candidate apologized. While she was sure that the apology was directed towards the infant inside of her, Ashwyn still murmured, "It's okay. He or she is going to be fine."

She was rather taken aback by her fellow candidate's abrupt change in mood. Taking a backwards step, she found herself somewhat entranced by Amarisha's eyes. They really were the strangest eyes she'd ever seen, if truth be told. "Hello..." Had she seemed hesitant when Amarisha had invited her? Most likely. If she recalled correctly, she had mostly been thinking about how much of her cover-up she had left. There was no way she'd attend a social event without fixing up her face, after all. Amarisha's question surprised her as well. "No, I didn't bring my guitar. My brother is playing. He's the one with the brace on his leg. Perhaps..." She bit her lip thoughtfully, glancing down at Amarisha's belly. What was it about the pregnant woman that made her so endearing?

"Maybe he'll let me borrow his guitar later. For the baby, I mean."

Luca - Tag Thoia:

An almost uncomfortable shrug followed Thoia's insistence in giving Luca some credit. The bluerider did not think that she was selling herself short, but what did she know? Following Thoia's gaze out of curiosity, she raised an eyebrow. It seemed that Thoia was looking at the notorious "ice queen" of the candidate barracks, who was standing with a pregnant woman. Interesting. Her expression, as she met Thoia's gaze again, was curious, but she didn't ask about it. It wasn't her business, if "it" was anything at all.

She says you're sweet, Emmy, Luca relayed to him with the mental equivalent of a snort. She could have sworn he started purring at the compliment, but he stoutly denied it when she asked him if he was.

"I'm glad we're doing well, too, doll," she said with a dry chuckle. "I think we would've missed your pretty face if Thread got us. Now, did you meet your special boy or girl on the Sands? They say you can sometimes tell, you know." Winking, she downed the rest of her beer in a long gulp, then set the mug down on the nearest sturdy surface. "Dance with me." It was more of a playful order than a request, but she still offered Thoia her hand with all the courtesy of a noble.

Tasem - Tag Michiru:

Beaming, Tasem tugged their weyrmate closer, trapping her in their arms. "I'm never dim, sweetheart." They snickered, allowing themself to picture the scene in their head. Yes, Michiru probably would have enjoyed watching them dance with some pretty woman or even a man. "I'm sure you wouldn't mind that at all. But I think, at least for now, I want you to myself." Selfish? Tasem? Never.

Their eyes rolled back in their head with their laughter at Michiru's jab. "Ouch. Dearheart, I knew you had a harper's tongue, but I never knew it to be so barbed." They pretended to consider their weyrmate's question, all the while "surveying" the crowd for eligible partners. Heaving a sigh, they took Michiru's hand and twirled her away from them. "Very well. We shall dance, my blue."

Ytath, do you really think Taz could clear the room with their voice?

Amarisha
Tag; Ashwyn

The blonde candidate twisted to cast a glance over her shoulder. She smiled when her eyes met with the musician who Ash said was her brother. “Oh yeah, he looks kinda like you!” She was still grinning when she turned her attention back on her friend. “What happened to his leg? Is he a rider? Oh my gosh did he fall of his dragon during practice or something?” As usual Ama’s imagination ruled her.

“Ah, he better let you borrow it. Otherwise he will have an upset mother-to-be to deal with!” Giggling, Amarisha turned slightly and stood on her tip toes to see what she could see of the food table. The spread would be sparse, no doubt, but her stomach felt like it was empty even though she had snacked on some fruit provided by one of the infirmary workers before she came here. It was sweet how they all seemed so concerned with her health. Or, rather, her baby’s health. But maybe her’s too. They would probably scold her almost as bad as Ash had if they heard she had consumed alcohol.

“Anyway, before you play, let’s check out the food, yeah? I didn’t look at it earlier ‘cuz I figured a drink would be enough for me, hehe.” She reached out and offered her hand to Ash. “You lead the way, kay? Clear a path for your favorite friend!”

Ashwyn - Tag Amarisha:

Ashwyn winced, her gaze flickering down to her brother-in-law's leg. "No, he's not a rider. He and I were caught in a rockfall last summer." And that was all she would say about it. If truth be told, she still had nightmares about that day. We owe R'ece so much. Part of her wondered if the bronzerider had chosen to attend this little get-together. Perhaps she would be able to encourage Tiang and the other harpers to play a song in his honor.

Amarisha's giggling brought her back from her more morbid thoughts. Ashwyn raised her eyebrows, watching the other candidate stand up on her tiptoes. Looking for something? Or someone? Bitterness threatened to eat away at her, and she held it at bay by pondering what sort of song she would, maybe, play for Amarisha. Something upbeat, for sure, though she preferred to play the haunting types of ballads that moved people to tears. She didn't think that Amarisha would appreciate that type of song, though.

"We wouldn't want my poor brother to deal with another mother-to-be," she muttered under her breath, just loud enough for Ama to hear. It took her a moment to realize that the other woman was holding a hand out to her. It took her another second to realize that she was meant to take it. With a twinge of discomfort, she took the other woman's hand and began to lead the way through the crowd. A few icy glares and cold looks were enough to part the masses. "Friend?" she asked, almost incredulously, over her shoulder. She didn't look at Ama as she said it.
