Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Amarisha stormed into the candidate lounge, moving faster than she had in a long time, and made an immediate turn down the first hall on the left. Her pronounced pregnant belly lead the way as she executed long strides toward her objective. It was about 7:15pm and the evening free period had just begun. Some of her fellow dragon candidates were taking advantage of the down time by lounging and communing, but Ama knew the girl she was after probably wouldn’t be out socializing. No, she’d be tucked away in her room doing whatever she did during her free time.

In the pregnant girl’s wake her flitt, Kilimanjaro, followed. The bronze was flapping hard, almost struggling to keep up with his human. He could sense her panic and it alarmed him greatly. She was freaking out about something his little mind failed to grasp. But just because he didn’t understand didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try and make things better. He’d not let his girl out of his sight until she had calmed down. Hopefully this other blonde whose room they were heading for would be able to help.

Within moments Amarisha had reached room 17. She was so distraught that she didn’t even bother knocking. Instead she gripped the handle, found it unlocked, and threw open the door before barging inside. Jaro followed after her, squawked a greeting to Ash, and then landed on the floor beside his girl’s feet.

“Ash, I can’t do it! I can’t go through with this! I can’t!” The prospect of giving birth had frightened Amarisha from the beginning, but before recently the idea had been distant. Safe. Now the horrors of birthing were imminent and fast approaching. Only a few weeks remained. Soon the gruesome stories she had heard would be happening to her.

“I need time to stop!” the delirious girl babbled on nonsensically, completely oblivious to what her friend was doing. She was hugging her round stomach while also staring at it fearfully. Tears were beginning to form in her eyes and this made her firelizard squawk again as he started pacing back and forth by her feet. “Yeah, that’s it. I just need more time!” Her slightly red eyes finally looked from her belly to Ash in a pleading manner. She needed guidance more than she needed time to stop, she just didn’t know it.

Soreal's little head popped up, and he glanced towards the door, then towards his bonded. He cocked his head sideways, peeping questioningly and trying to impress upon her that he thought something loud-loud and heavy was coming. It was a failed attempt. Ashwyn was frowning down at her chest, her chin practically tucked into the hollow of her throat. The stitches had been removed, and the wound from the Hatching nearly two months ago had closed into a puckered, angry pink scar, about six inches across and two inches wide at its thickest. It was jagged, thick, and disgusting. Her scarred right hand touched the newest addition to her flaws. Nasty. The thought was venomous, sad. She couldn't hate the brown that had mauled her, though she was fairly sure R'ken wasn't his biggest fan. Still, why couldn't he have tripped into someone else? Or at least Impressed to me?

Her brown firelizard called out to her again, louder this time, and jumped from her bed to the floor. His wings were extended as he faced the door, and mere seconds later, it burst open. Ashwyn instinctively whirled around, only to spin away equally quickly. "Faranth, there is this beautiful thing called knocking!" she cried shrilly, scrabbling for the shirt that she'd left on her night table. Throwing it on, she rounded on the impostor, her glower clearly indicating murderous intentions. There was a dark flush to her complexion--how much had the intruder seen?--and it only darkened when she realized that the person was Amarisha.

A very, very distraught Amarisha. The lines on Ashwyn's face disappeared as her scowl relaxed. She was still agitated, but Amarisha, like R'ken and a handful of others, seemed to have the rare gift of being liked by Vaioa's "ice queen." The scarred woman's frown remained, though, and soon enough, the lines reappeared on her face as her brow furrowed in confusion. Hazel-gold eyes flickered from Amarisha to her belly to Jaro. "Ama...what in the name of the Egg are you talking about?" The question came out sharply, and Ashwyn took a deep, calming breath. Clearly, her sort-of-friend was having some sort of crisis. Why do they always come to me? At least Amarisha was tolerable; something about the fact that she was pregnant made Ashwyn feel a certain sense of comradeship towards her. Helped her see past her normal vicious jealousy.

As Soreal skittered across the room to rub up against Amarisha's ankles, Ashwyn tried for a gentler tone. Just like you're talking to Tara, she coached herself. "Amarisha, slow down. I don't understand. What's wrong?" A horrified expression appeared on her face, and she quickly crossed the distance between herself and the other woman. Grabbing Ama's shoulders, she shook her gently. "Is it time?" It's too early. She shouldn't be due yet, should she?

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
In her delirious state it took Amarisha a moment to comprehend what she had walked in on: a topless Ashwyn. She had seen more than the other girl probably would have liked; that is to say she saw everything. The slow comprehension caused a weak smile to curl at the edge of Ama’s quivering lip. Her insides warred for a few moments between flirting and her panic as she tried to listen to her friend speak. Was she mad? Yes. The murder in her eyes attested to that. In retrospect perhaps Ama should have knocked, but that couldn’t be helped now. But Ash would forgive her because the Ice Queen had a soft spot for lovable Amarisha. Right? A tentative step back was taken, just in case.

But then Ash’s features smoothed and she posed a question. What am I talking about? She doesn’t know? In Ama’s mind she had been perfectly coherent—or at least somewhat coherent--so the question sort of threw her. Slow down… okay, I can do that… As her friend took her by the shoulders and Soreal looped about her ankles, Ama took a deep breath and blinked the moisture from her eyes. “I can’t do this,” she repeated, holding up her palms in a helpless manner. “No, it isn’t time yet. But…” when the time does come, “I’m not ready.”

Careful not to step on either of the flitts at her feet, Ama took a step forward and buried her face into her friend’s neck. Her enlarged belly kept her from giving a natural hug and so she had to bend forward in order to get her arms around Ash’s torso. “Giving birth is gonna be so painful,” she sobbed, finally letting the tears flow. “I think I made a mistake. I can’t do it!” The candidate’s surprisingly strong arms flexed and coiled as she squeezed her friend tighter. She needed security and reassurance, which she found in the physical contact. “H- how did you do it? How did you go th- through with it??”

Ashwyn was caught a little off-guard when Amarisha took a step back. That had not been the first reaction she had expected from the woman. Though, who could blame her after what she saw? Bitter thoughts could never be quenched, even in times of potential crisis. Ashwyn's eyes narrowed at the slight hint of a smile playing along Amarisha's lips. It was a paradox to the step back. Confusing. She didn't like the mixed signals. Unless she's making fun of me in her head? Wynonis would have surely hit her for being so self-absorbed in that moment. Shells, Ashwyn almost wanted to hit herself when Amarisha took a deep breath and spoke. The other woman's eyes glistened; had she been crying?

Comprehension dawned on the woman's scarred face. All at once, her abdomen tightened and clenched painfully. The agonies of childbirth were not easily forgotten; Ashwyn doubted she would ever forget. That's what she's not ready for. Who could blame Ama, either? No doubt she'd asked the women of the Weyr to share their experiences. Few of those women would sugarcoat it for a candidate. Ashwyn didn't even flinch when Ama embraced her; her own arms wrapped carefully around the woman. Somehow, she'd expected it, and Amarisha was just so pitiful and far from threatening at the moment.

Rubbing her back, Ashwyn tried not to find pleasure in the warm contact. She was not one to seek any contact from non-family, and it was...nice. If only under different circumstances. "Shh, hush now," she murmured, humming softly as she rubbed Ama's back. "Hush, hush. You're going to be all right." She tried not to think of those women who died in childbirth. That happening to sweet, innocent Amarisha was unthinkable. Possible, but horrifying to even dream of. "I'm not going to lie to you, Ama. It's going to hurt. But...Faranth, when you hold your little one in your arms, you're going to see that it was all worth it. Shh, it's going to be okay. Let it all out." She winced at the tightness of Amarisha's grip on her, but tried not to let the discomfort show.

"I got through it because I had Stan and my parents and my family. They were there for me the whole time," she whispered in Amarisha's ear, unthinkingly pressing a kiss to her temple. It was what she instinctively did when comforting Tara. It was second-nature to her now. "Choose a few people you trust, who love you, and have them there with you."
