Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

(early winter 1264, couple of months after our last thread, a couple weeks before Agate's hatching)

This is the best thing to happen to you, and you know it.

Vinsica chose to ignore her green's piece of wisdom. So long as she kept flying. The wind was brisk, and Vinsica could barely see beyond Pileeth's muzzle. How the green navigated in such a fog was beyond the Healer. There were certain aspects of dragons that no one could explain, and their innate sense of location and ability to avoid each other in flight were two of them.

I don't see why you have to take it out on Roduth's. She's done nothing but try to help.

The green looked over her shoulder at her rider while she skimmed around the Weyr's central column, seeking Roduth's weyr. It wasn't lost on the green that Vinny would be returning the favor by barging into the copperrider's. The major difference was that Aislyn most likely wouldn't care about the violation the way Vinny had.

She had a hand in this. Vinny was certain. After their last conversation had gone so horribly, the greenrider knew, just knew, that Aislyn had to have influenced the decision somehow. All she needed to read was the first two lines of the message hide.
  • It is with great respect and regret that we inform that one Vinsica, senior journeyman dragonhealer and rider of green Pileeth, that her request to transfer from Vaioa Weyr to Telgar Weyr has been denied.

Denied.

She hadn't bothered to read the rest of the hide before storming out and demanding Pileeth fly her to Aislyn's weyr. The green had relented, grudgingly, thanks to just how angry Vinsica was. Still was. She seethed and barely waited for Pileeth to land properly before vaulting from her shoulders and striding into the copperrider's weyr.

Apologies, Roduth, Pileeth told the larger dragon sheepishly, hanging her head and rustling her wings nervously. I could not convince her to cool down first.

"Aislyn! Aislyn, you underhanded son of a Bitran!"

Pileeth winced. Yep, someone was angry.

Aislyn hated and loved winter. She hated the cold but loved the short break they got from flying against Thread. Not that she had been doing much of that after Rubikon but still. For now she was currently going over a few notes. While she may not have been able to join the rest of her wing in drills or in the skies, she was still Wingthird. With Jasper getting closer and closer to graduation she figured she might as well start preparations for any new additions. Not that she had much say but it couldn't hurt to put her own opinions in, along with a few of the other riders.

So when the rustling of wings and the scratching of claws reached her ears, Aislyn was confused. Roduth hadn't left, not wanting to go out in the fog for now. So who was showing up? Well there were a few people who had free rein to drop in. Before she could make a guess an angry voice called out and a smirk appeared on her face. Vinsica. Leaning back in her seat, the red head shifted it around to get a better look at the other woman. "Ahhh, a surprise visit from my favorite greenrider! I'm touched, but I think I would be a daughter of a Bitran. Missing a few key parts to be a son." Sarcasm was probably a bad idea considering the Healer's mood but Aislyn honestly had no idea what she'd done to her this time. She hadn't even gone to see Vinsica since their failed argument.

Roduth had shifted into a more alert position as Pileeth landed. It was a surprise to see the green here but more to see that Vinsica had come with her. And was apparently on a mission with the way she'd dismounted from her dragon. Hmm, how interesting. When Pileeth apologized, the copper let out an amused rumble and gave a quick shake of his head. No need to apologize, Pileeth. I do believe it was mine who stormed into Vinsica's weyr first. He wasn't used to seeing the female nervous so he offered a comforting croon. Please, make yourself comfortable. If yours is anything like mine you could be here a while.

The fact that Aislyn was somewhere besides lounging in the main room came as a bit of a surprise to Vinny. Yes, she knew the redhead was a Wingthird, but Aislyn never struck her as the responsible type. Then again, she was a Wingthird, and rank wasn't merely thrown around. She turned to head for the desk where the redhead grinned from behind piles of paperwork.

"Bother someone else with an anatomy lesson," she growled at Aislyn's audacity. Playing innocent wouldn't help her here. Vinny withdrew the rolled hide from inside her flight jacket and slapped it in front of Aislyn, Wing paperwork be scorched. "Don't deny you had a hand in this."

So enraged was the greenrider that she resorted to vague statements. She couldnt' wrap her mind around why she would be denied unless someone else influenced the decision. This response had taken a little longer than usual, but Vinny was used to waiting. After all, unlike a normal rider, her transfer had to be approved by two entities: the Weyr and the Healer Hall. One of the few crafts to retain rank after impressing, too, Healing was. Because Pern could never have too many skilled Healers. It didn't even occur to Vinsica that the denial could have come from the Hall and not the Weyr.

I think I do need to apologize for this, Pileeth protested lamely, tucking her wings more comfortably and taking the copper's invitation by stepping into the weyr and out of the wet. Unlike her weyr, his was roomy enough to easily fit her small form too. She's accusing your rider. Not exactly how I wanted to visit next, but Vinny is my rider and shards can she be explosive.

"But anatomy is so much fun. With the right people of course." She probably shouldn't continue to push at Vinsica's buttons but considering she had no knowledge of what brought her here it just seemed to slip out. That and her reactions were so fun! Vinny had growled! Actually growled at her! Learning new things all the time. Tilting her head as the other woman pulled something from her jacket before slapping it down among her paperwork, Aislyn had to fight the confusion from showing on her face. This was what had brought her in? And why would Aislyn herself be a part of it?

She eventually gave in to her curiosity and reached for the hide. "Well best to see what my hand has been doing." After unrolling it, she only had to read the first few sentences before a wide grin appeared on her face. Her transfer had been denied! If that wasn't the best news she'd heard in quite some time! Wait, was this why Vinsica was so angry? And the Healer thought she'd had something to do with it? Oh this was good, way to good. "You're blaming this on me? I'm flattered, really."

Well, you have to admit that she probably had reason to believe Aislyn had something to do with this. Considering how excited she is by the news. Roduth pointed out. As she made her way inside, he shifted around to make sure she had enough room. Not that it was a problem considering how much smaller the green was to him. Hmm, you two haven't seen Aislyn when she gets explosive. Should be interesting to have two explosive people in the same room.

It was with great impatience that Vinsica waited while Aislyn read the missive. There was no doubt in her mind that, somehow, Aislyn had impacted the transfer request. True, Vinny was not in Aislyn's Wing, and wingthirds weren't often consulted for Weyr-to-Weyr transfers. Neither of those logical explanations helped temper her righteous anger.

Nor did the grin Aislyn developed as she read the denial notification.

"Flattered?" Now that threw Vinsica off balance. Aislyn shouldn't be flattered. That didn't make sense. Aislyn would have known about this in the beginning. She'd found out about Vinny's initial transfer request, after all. Surely she would have known about the decision, had influenced it somehow. She looked thrilled for Vinny's misfortune! "Who else would be happy about this?"

Pileeth groaned and tossed her head tiredly. I'm excited by the news, but I have to deal with her griping, the green complained, flopping with little grace beside the copper. I'm honestly surprised your rider didn't explode last time. Vinny certainly pushed back.

Aislyn's grin only widened as Vinsica seemed to be confused that Aislyn didn't seem to know about this denial. Had she even realized that the red head had no influence in these kinds of decisions? If she had she would've voted a giant no in the first place. The fact that Vinny seemed to think she had any pull with the Weyrleaders on transfer requests, or the Healerhall. Didn't they need to approve this as well since she was one of them too. Hmm, so many people and they ended up giving her the answer she'd been hoping for. Lucky her.

"Who else wouldn't be happy?" She chuckled and rolled the hide back up before handing it out to the greenrider. "Well, anyone who didn't want ya to go. I'm happy as shaffit about it and I can only imagine how pleased Pileeth is to hear that you two aren't leaving." Pushing herself away from the desk before slowly standing up and stretching. Apparently she'd been sitting down for a bit longer than she'd thought, even her leg was feeling a big stiff. A nice and constant reminder to keep her limbs out of the way of a wher's mouth.

"Do ya want me to say I'm sorry that you got denied? Cause I'd be lying. I'm pretty sure I didn't hold back on my opinion about that." Aislyn pointed out, not sorry at all about how she was reacting or about the fact that Vinsica was denied. In fact, she was already thinking about how to celebrate. A drink sounded great, not something the healer would be interested in but hey, she could still grab one for herself. "Pileeth!" She called out, moving around Vinsica to catch sight of the green next to Roduth. "Congratulations on getting to stay!"

Roduth rumbled at how Pileeth seemed quite comfortable with just flopping down beside him. Well, I'm sure the griping will eventually stop. And you are always welcome to come here if you wish to escape it for a bit. Or at least as much of it as you can. He leaned down and playfully nudged at the green. As for exploding, she came pretty close to it. But apparently I've been rubbing off on her, slowly but surely.

As Aislyn's grin widened, Vinny's scowl darkened. The copperrider had no tact, no professionalism. Why Vinny even thought to expect that was beyond her, and she reminded herself of just how blunt Aislyn was. This rider was not the pinnacle of decorum. Quite the opposite, and Vinny was once again having that fact shoved in her face.

She's right though, Pileeth unhelpfully interjected. I am happy we're staying.

I don't need the reminder.

The Healer took the missive when it was handed back to her, reading those first two lines for the dozenth time that afternoon. Denied. One simple word would make her working life a hell to suffer. With the Holdless conflict barely resolved and Weyrfolk still leery of everyone not born in a Weyr--or so it seemed to the very biased Vinny--being grouped with the other Holdless continued to make doing her duty difficult. Aislyn's subtle stiffness, the hint of a limp from her old injury, wasn't enough to invoke pity in the greenrider.

"No, you were quite clear the last time," she reluctantly agreed, tucking the missive back into her jacket and crossing her arms as the copperrider moved through her weyr. "I didn't appreciate the insinuation of cowardice, while we're on that topic," she added with no shortage of venom, though she tried valiantly to regain her composure. Though reason had yet to work on Aislyn, Vinny felt more in control without emotion clouding her thoughts. Anger would get her nowhere here, but that didn't mean it was easy to suppress.

Pileeth's happy bugle didn't help.

I wish I would rub off on my rider more, the green groaned and snorted, despite how happy she was that she did get to stay. Roduth's nudge gave her the perfect excuse to flop over dramatically, so she rolled and flailed just so, right over onto her back with legs in the air, before settling more comfortably on her side. If you have a secret, I'd love to hear it. Unless it's a secret coppers only thing. I'd hate to spoil your boy club.

"Good, I was hoping I had been clear enough even for you." Aislyn chuckled, running a hand through her hair. She had a feeling Vinsica was still here for an argument, even after the fact that she hadn't had anything to do with the denial of her transfer. Honestly, why did the other woman think she was the root of her problem? The next comment from the Healer had her rolling her eyes. Yep, had to be here for another argument. "Is that so? Sorry, but I call them like I see them."

Turning around, Aislyn placed a hand on her hip and raised an eyebrow at Vinsica. "To me, running away from your problems instead of facing them head on is cowardly. Which is what you were doing with that transfer. Like I said before if you keep running, or transferring, eventually you're gonna run out of places to go. Here you've got people who respect your work. Who respect you." There were people, other healers, who may not have known who Vinsica was as a person but knew she did good work. There was no way she couldn't considering how much she worked and how much she'd dedicated her life to the craft.

A small grin tugged her lips upwards. "Then you've got me who values you as a friend. Even if you don't feel the same." She was well aware that Vinny didn't think of her as much more than an annoyance. It wasn't that hard to figure out since she'd never really hidden it. Or if she had it hadn't been well. Which was fine with her. She'd gotten to pull plenty of things out of the greenrider that wouldn't have shown themselves without her annoying her. Chuckling when Pileeth's happy bugle reached her ears, her grin widened. At least one of the two visitors were happy to be here.

Roduth let out another rumble, a bit louder this time, at the green's antics. Sure he was bigger than her but surely not big enough for a simple nudge to have her rolled over like that. So dramatic, sort of like Aislyn could be at times. I'm afraid I don't have a secret. And there is hardly a boy club at all. I spend a good deal of my time with females. He protested the last part with a snort. Aislyn's just figured out that exploding tends to lead to bad endings. She doesn't want things to end with yours. Regardless of how hard yours pushes sometimes.

Vinsica could have gone into exacting detail regarding the difficulties she now had in her craft. How just this passed sevenday she had a rider refuse to let her treat his dragon, how he'd demanded another dragonhealer because he didn't want a 'holdless bitran' stitching up his dragon. Or perhaps Aislyn would like hearing about the apprentices who worked in fear and nervousness around her. Oh, and then there had been the lovely painted 'S' she'd found on her desk one morning. Vinny could have laid out every single challenge and wall she'd run into thanks to her transfer being denied, how she now had to work among distrusting coworkers, some of whom were downright hateful depending on their past experiences with holdless.

She almost did. She even opened her mouth to refute Aislyn's claims of cowardice, that her transfer was for the benefit of everyone involved. But she couldn't. The transfer wouldn't have benefited Pileeth, even though the green would forget all about Vaioa in a few sevendays, dragon memory being what it was. And...

"There are a couple who have looked passed rumor," she acquiesced, knowing that her master couldn't care less what was on her forearm, what she covered every day. "But as I said before, the word 'friend' has little meaning for me," was her lame defense as she stood bearing the full brunt of Aislyn's smirk. Vinny had always been alone, had lived a life so easily turned into a sob-story, how easily she could victimize herself. Transferring had always been her choice, her action, rather than letting her circumstances and other people beat her down and turn to 'woe is me.' In her mind, transferring had never been to run away, yet now, faced with the denial and her own emotional response, she knew that running was exactly what she had been doing for turns.

It left a very sour taste in her mouth.

Pileeth laughed and shuffled her wings to a more comfortable position since laying on her side meant she couldn't fold them daintily along her back. Trying to make me jealous? Are there females I need to warn away? she teased, eyes whirling bright enough to match her hide. I can be just as pushy as my rider, if so, though in all seriousness, Vinny did tend to push people away. Part of her whole idea that she was only as good as her skills as a Healer and rider, that she wasn't as...human as everyone else. I'm glad yours puts up with her. Shards, your rider even wields the stick when Vinny needs a good whack on the head! Which was exactly what Vinny was getting, even if the greenrider didn't know it.

((lo and behold, Vinny doesn't like eating crow xD ))

It was probably a good thing that Vinsica hadn't told Aislyn about the things that had been going around in her craft. Otherwise the red head would be down in the infirmary giving people dirty looks and threatening to kick them in the tailforks for being idiots. Not the best way to react to something like that but it would be the first thing Aislyn would think of. She still didn't understand how people could treat someone like that when they'd been treating her just fine until then. Her work hadn't changed, her attitude hadn't changed just because someone saw the mark on her arm. But she wouldn't be able to change anyone's mind like that so she would just have to keep supporting Vinsica in anyway that she could.

Aislyn grinned as Vinny stated that there were a couple people who didn't care about her mark. "See? That's progress! I bet that's more than you thought." Aislyn pointed out, happy to hear that at least the Healer was starting to see that not everyone saw only the mark on her arm. Then she was snorting as the other woman stated that she still wasn't accepting her friendship. She was fine with it, eventually Vinny would see how things really were. "Okay fine. I'm not your friend then. I'm sure I can come up with another title for what I am to you." Constant annoyance, Voice of Reason, that rider who she wished would leave her alone. Didn't matter to Aislyn.

Roduth tilted his head in confusion as Pileeth asked if he was trying to make her jealous. Warn away females? What? He'd been counting the green in with the females he'd been talking about. What was...oh wait. She was teasing him. Oh? Now would you be pushing these other females away or just me? Roduth teased back, eyes whirling merrily as he relaxed. It didn't seem like the two riders would be fighting anytime soon so he could just relax with Pileeth and enjoy her company. Letting out a gust of air as he snorted, the copper flicked his tail as he tried to hold back his amusement. Well, mine has her reasons for putting up with her. One of them could be the fact that she gets to whack yours on the head whenever she needs it.
