Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Be Still and Know That I'm With You [Tag: Thoia]; Winter 1264, Night of Agate Hatching

When his rider had left with her candidate after the Agate feast, Emmeth had decided to give the two some privacy. Luca never minded that he was around when she was with someone, but he was not sure how a nonrider would appreciate his presence, even if he remained on his ledge. Besides, he had his own agenda for the evening. His hatchlings needed to be comforted, and so he settled down outside of the candidate barracks, gently touching the minds of those inside to see who was coping well and who wasn't. He paid special attention to Karaelyn, as he was still greatly concerned for her because of her burns. Luca had repeatedly insisted that the girl would be very much all right, but hurt was hurt, no matter how fleeting it was.

As dusk settled over the Weyrbowl and the final celebrations came to an end, Emmeth felt the minds inside the barracks slowly darken into the state of sleep. He had received his share of visitors throughout the evening, the young hatchlings especially. They had all needed company, and he had offered it, cradling them to his chest in his forelegs, nuzzling their tears away. It distressed him that they could not all Impress. If only there were more dragons to fill the voids in their hearts. He hoped that his presence helped. He thought it might have; they all returned to their beds with brighter minds.

The moons were high in the sky when Emmeth finally rose and shook the mud from his hide. He scanned his hatchlings' minds one more time, and, satisfied that they were well for the moment, trotted away from the barracks. A powerful leap carried him aloft, and he glided up to his weyr ledge in silence, not wishing to disturb the sleeping weyrfolk and dragons. Landing softly, he flapped his damp wings to dry them, shaking his whole body once more to rid himself of the rain that had not abated. On silent paws, he slunk into the weyr, passing by his couch so that he could nose open the door to his bonded's sleeping room. His glowing eyes were soft green as he watched his family. His own rider was dead asleep, softly snoring and taking up what looked like the entire bed. He rumbled in amusement, lightly nudging her, trying to get her subconscious mind to shift over and give Hope's more room. He thought that Hope's human was well. Her mind felt sleepy. Sleep well, he whispered to the women, and to the two firelizards.

He was pleased that his Luca had thought to offer Hope's girl a place of comfort for the night. Hope's was very good for his bonded, and it had pained him to see her not Impress. Though, in some way, it was probably good for his Luca. But that was a selfish thought, and as he returned to his couch, he freed it from his mind. The moonlight was shrouded by cloud cover, but Emmeth still lay down facing the mouth of his cave. He was not yet tired, despite the excitement of the day, and would content himself for now with watching the rain and monitoring his bonded's mind for bad dreams.

Thoia liked to pretend that she was not disappointed. She was weyr-bred; so she knew that there would always be a place for her at the weyr as long as she was willing to pull her weight, and she knew plenty of worthy people who "should" have impressed, but it simply did not work that way. Not impressing did not mean a person was unworthy or broken or inferior--even though there were plenty who thought it did. All it meant was that you were not the right fit for any of the hatched dragonets. She also knew many who impressed at the last chance, even some who impressed well after they no longer should have.

And yet.

She only had a few more turns on the sands, and no matter how important everyone at the weyr was, no one wanted to be called a drudge! She was weyr-bred so she did not have an apprenticeship to fall back onto. What would she do if she aged out? It was scary to know that that was something she really needed to begin to contemplate. So yes, as much as she liked to pretend she was mature enough to not be disappointed, but she was.

At the same time, she knew, though Luca was hesitant to say it outright and she was hesitant to push Luca any more than she already had, that her relationship with Luca was progressing far more than she had expected, and a dragonet would have complicated that.

And so she lay sleepily beside the sleeping woman, half watching her, half just unable to quiet her mind enough to sleep. The comfort Luca had offered had been appreciated, especially as there had been no sense of pity in it, and it had helped, but still, with Luca asleep and Hope happily asleep far far away from Gale--or as far as she could get anyway and still be close to Thoia--the doubts and questions began.

And then an unexpected voice offered her good wishes in her sleeping, and she smiled, angling herself, careful of Luca, to look toward his couch, smiling even more as she saw the Blue's eyes. "Thank you." She spoke softly so as not to wake up Luca, though she was not sure she could, and figured if he was touching her mind, he could hear her no matter how quietly she spoke.

Emmeth had expected Hope's human to be asleep, like his was. He had certainly not expected her to reply to him. If he had known she was awake, he likely would not have spoken to her at all. Startling slightly, he glanced over his shoulder, through the open bedroom door. There was a yellow tinge to his green eyes, brought about by nervousness. He himself couldn't remember exactly how many times he had spoken to Thoia while she was conscious, but he knew that it couldn't have been more than the occasional quiet hello. His rider was the talker. She translated for him. And...she was still asleep. He didn't have the heart to wake her, either, but he couldn't just ignore Hope's! Especially on the night when she had not Impressed.

Shuffling around on his couch, Emmeth ducked his head, kneading at the stone with his talons. He didn't say anything right away; part of him was still hoping that his Luca would awaken and save him from embarrassing them both. He knew better, though, than to think that that would actually happen. And, as he touched Thoia's mind with all the hesitance in the world, the empathetic creature could feel some swirls of negativity. She was just another hatchling, albeit extra important to his bonded and, by extension, to himself. Paternal instincts won over shyness, and he finally spoke.

H-Hope's. If he had Searched her, this would have been so much easier... He pushed on, though, for the human. W-why are you still awake? D-do you have enough room? His words were nothing more than a whisper, as he was genuinely anxious about talking to Thoia, and he also didn't want to wake his rider. The latter fear proved unnecessary; Luca merely muttered incomprehensively and buried her face in the pillow. W-would you m-move that? I-I'd rather not s-suffocate. A nervous chuckle followed the feeble attempt at a joke.

Thoia smiled at being called "Hope's." It was sweet, and she knew from their limited interactions and Luca that Emmeth was rather shy. Even if she had been told that the one time she had called him "Emmy" in response to Luca using the term it had pleased them both. Which had pleased, and embarrassed a bit, her as well.

She nodded and whispered into the night, as he'd pulled back to his couch, though she was still angled to see the door. "I am. No, that was only a problem the first time I spent the night with your Luca. She is a bit of a sprawler, isn't she? Though she's also a tosser and turner, she'll move out of the pillow soon enough." Thoia's whisper and mind voice were amused. Both at Emmeth's joke and at Luca's ridiculous sleeping habits. "It's just irrational thoughts, keeping me up. I know better, but it takes a day or two before the disappointment truly dissipates, but it will, and everything will be fine." It was a lot to confess to the Blue, and perhaps it was the gentleness she'd seen in him or just not being left alone with her thoughts, but she did so.

Emmeth rumbled, the sound filling the weyr like thunder. I..I d-do not remember a t-time when I was s-small enough to fit in her couch. But...I do b-believe that I know how you feel...felt...with the s-prawling. He thought that his bonded liked to take up space, but it was not noticeable when she lay with him on his couch. The stone slab was simply too big, and she was simply too tiny to take up enough room to affect him. T-the tossing is better w-when you're here, he murmured, hoping to make the little candidate feel good. However, as soon as he said it, he wanted to take it back. Something told him that his rider would not have appreciated him sharing that.

Quickly, so as to save face for his Luca, the blue added, P-please don't tell her I-I said that. She'll p-pout. Emmeth tilted his head, and rustling was audible in his room as he fidgeted yet again. W-would you like to come sit with me? S-she won't mind, and we can t-talk without you worrying a-about...about being l-loud. He didn't add that his bonded was usually a deep sleeper. It would be just his luck for her to sleep light if he said that, and then Thoia would think him a liar. He didn't want her to think he was a liar!

Thoia frowned at that. She knew dragons did not remember much without their person to do so for them, but her own sense of sentimentality, she supposed, made that feel really sad. Sure, when she thought about having a weyrling, there were draw backs, but the cuddling with a small carryable dragon...ah well.

"Oh?" She blushed but grinned at that, and then giggled as he tried to cover it up. "I would like that." She knew Luca was a deep sleeper, but she was careful to get out of the bed without a triggering a cuddle toss and turn, not that she'd normally mind, but she was of a mind to take up Emmeth's offer.

Throwing on a robe, she padded out to join him. "Thank you. And she would, but only because she reacts horribly to anything that makes her sound cute." She rolled her eyes grinning. Then suddenly, as she looked at the ridiculously sweet Blue, she felt shy. This was more than "just" a Blue of the Weyr, or even a search dragon that could make her feel better. No, this was the Dragon of the woman she might be allowing herself to fall in love with. "Um...thanks, again."

Emmeth often practiced human facial expressions, using his reflection in the water cavern to help himself. No amount of practice, though, could have made the smile he gave Thoia anything less than terrifying. It was more a grimace than anything else, all sharp teeth and furrowed muzzle. Why do you thank me? he asked, genuinely puzzled. His face smoothed, and he tilted his head at Thoia. C-come, you m-may sit if y-you w-would l-like. He scooted back until his side hit the wall, and the front leg nearest to Thoia bent to create a rough backrest of sorts. Much like his bonded, he didn't entirely mind physical contact, as long as he knew the person and was expecting it.

Snorting, he gazed out at the sheeting rain once more. Ours is a p-peculiar t-thing. I-isn't "c-cute" s-supposed to be a c-compliment? As he jested, he glanced back at Thoia with obvious nervousness. Would she laugh? Would she think that he was a dimglow? A soft whine escaped his muzzle, signaling his momentary distress. And then he realized that she was as shy as he was. It was an odd revelation, truly. Why would this human that his bonded valued so much feel reason to be shy around him? Lowering his head and stretching his neck, he blew a puff of warm air into Thoia's face. S-shush. L-Luca and I-I c-care for y-you. Y-you are s-sad.

Emmeth was probably the least scary dragon to have ever existed in the history of all of Pern. Which was good since whatever face he was making in the dark of the night at Thoia looked terrifying. But it was Emmeth, so she was pretty sure that's not what he was going for. She grinned at his question though. "For being kind, thoughtful, considerate. For wanting to make sure I was all right, and for just the basic courtesy of inviting me into you space to talk." Was it possible the Blue had no clue how sweet he was? Different from Luca's denials, but still...so similar.

"And again, thank you." She smiled as she sat and leaned against him, gently laying a hand on him to communicate that thanks." Already feeling much less shy just by his...Emmeth-ness.

And then he said "ours," and Thoia started and looked up at him. It was dark, but if the light hit right and with his dragon eyes, he would be able to see she was blushing. "I think she just doesn't understand that being cute doesn't take away from her other attributes. Such as being strong and kick-arse and the force she wants to be."

When the conversation came back to her, she accepted the sweet breath and then sighed. "I'm not sad, so much as scared."

"For being kind, thoughtful, considerate. For wanting to make sure I was all right, and for just the basic courtesy of inviting me into you space to talk."

Thoia's explanation did not clarify anything for the blue. Yes, he was an intelligent sort, but he was also incredibly simple. Being kind, thoughtful, and considerate were givens to him. They were to be expected, in his mind, and therefore, not something to thank someone over. Basic courtesy, as Thoia put it, was just something that one extended to another. The blue understood that not all people followed that code, but it was still a surprise to be thanked for simple decency. He would not be so rude as to ignore it, though, and so he crooned softly in response to the voiced gratitude.

Such a sweet human, he thought approvingly to himself. Yes, His had picked a good little queen. He sighed contentedly when he felt the tiny hand on his leg. It had always astounded him that humans, in their smallness, could make simple touches feel so good. Their skill in scratching itches still awed him to no end. They were such a gifted species. Unable to resist, he slid his foreleg closer to the woman, inviting pets, if she wished to give them.

Unfortunately, that was the exact moment that Thoia startled, and he quickly scrambled away from her, controlling his movements just enough that he wouldn't hurt her with a flailing limb. I-I'm sorry! He did take notice of the sudden darkness of the candidate's face. It was not something he was accustomed to with his own human, but he did recall that she liked to make other humans do that. Had he embarrassed her, then? In his fretting, he missed whatever Thoia had said about his Luca, and he ducked his head further in embarrassment. Her quiet admission of fear had him looking up, and again, instinct won over shyness. The candidate was frightened. Naturally, that meant that he needed to make her feel safe.

Extending one wing, and ever mindful of the clawed tip, he draped the very edge of the membranous limb across Thoia's back. His tail came up to wrap around her, and he brushed her forehead with his nose. W-why are y-you a-afraid, s-sweet one? Had he done something? Yellow touched his eyes, glowing brightly in the night.

"Nononono," Thoia grimaced as he reacted to her startling. "Emmy....um, sorry, Emmeth, you didn't do anything wrong. There's nothing to apologize for. You just startled me when you called Luca 'ours,' that's all. I don't know, maybe you meant the noble 'we,' and I shouldn't have taken it any other way." She felt horrible that he seemed to think he had wounded her or hurt her in some way. "I'm sorry. I did not mean to worry you."

And then he was settling around her again and comforting her, this time with wing, tail, and nose, though he still sounded worried not just about comforting her, but something else. If he kept his nose by her, then she reached up and gently stroked his muzzle. "Because, I've only a few turns left before I age out, that's all. And I know it's silly. It doesn't mean I'm not worthy or shouldn't be standing; it doesn't mean I won't impress next time or the next. There was even a stands impression, so even if I age out, I might still impress...probably not. Most definitely not, but maybe. But there's still the worry that I might never. I might never know the bond you and Luca share. That's all."

That and she had no idea what she'd do if she didn't. Drudges, despite their horible sounding name, were crucial to the life of the weyr. There was no shame in it. But it wasn't what she wanted.
