Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The loudest pounding Luca had ever heard woke her from her post-drill nap. She startled, jerking away from her pillow and wiping a trickle of dried drool from her chin. Em? The fardles is that? Not Thoia... Thoia knew that their weyr was always open to her. She should never feel the need to knock, let alone knock so damned obnoxiously. Emmeth could be heard shifting around in his room. He did not answer her right away. That was unusual, as he was wide awake. Groaning, Luca pushed herself upright, groggily stumbling to her feet. Emmy? Hello?

His reply was hesitant, quiet, but not like he was normally hesitant and quiet. It was...off. Just go answer it, Mine. It is a...surprise.

A surprise? Blinking, Luca smirked. A surprise could be fun. Especially if it was a surprise of the female variety. Perhaps it was Thoia after all. Considerably more awake than she had been mere seconds ago, the bluerider stumbled out into the main weyr, wincing as the door once again rattled on its hinges. "Shards, someone's eager," she mumbled, running a hand over her face. She glanced over at Emmeth, but missed the yellow tinge of his eyes as he turned away to look outside. The intense pounding on the door once more captured her attention, and Luca swore under her breath, finally opening the piece of wood.

Instead of a beautiful certain candidate, she found herself smothered by a great wall of something. The smell of sweat, leather, and dragon filled her nostrils, along with a certain cologne that she had known since her childhood. She didn't have time to squeal and get excited. A thick arm had looped around her neck, and all of a sudden, hard, calloused knuckles were mussing the hair on the crown of her head. Her shriek was certainly not overjoyed. "Faranth! N'ik, knock it off!" Struggling was futile. Her brother was twice her size in height and mass. That didn't mean she would just lay down and take the noogies like a common wherry.

Throwing her weight against his arm, she thrashed about, trying to get a mouthful of his flesh to loosen his hold. She didn't succeed, but she did manage to hook her foot around his knee and jerk hard. The two of them collapsed in a confusing tangle of limbs, but Luca felt his arm loosen around her neck just a bit. A bit was all she needed; she broke free and tackled her older brother like the child she was at heart. N'ik roared a laugh, catching her easily, and the two of them rolled about on the floor for a good ten minutes, scuffling and trying to gain the upper hand over each other. It ended with N'ik squashing Luca face-first into the ground, twisting her left arm behind her back.

"Yield, Killer!" he shouted, applying more pressure. Luca spat at the nickname that had followed her from childhood, squirming and gritting her teeth stubbornly. It hurt, but she wasn't going to let N'ik win! At least if he dislocated her shoulder, she'd still have her pride! N'ik pushed harder, though, and eventually, it was Emmeth who yielded for her.

Enough! He did not stutter, nor was he quiet. He adopted the stern, firm voice that he only ever used with N'ik and Ferrivoth. Both humans looked up, Luca with surprise and disapproval, N'ik with a sneer. Emmeth loomed over them, his expression unamused. Off.

Sighing, N'ik released Luca's arm and stood, brushing off his pants. Luca scrambled up after him, panting, and rubbed her shoulder. "Bastard. I would have won if Emmy hadn't interfered." Em, be nice. She would never, ever understand the vendetta that her blue had against her brother. Granted, Ferrivoth was an arse, but N'ik was all right. Certainly not deserving of Emmeth's dislike. They were family!

Emmeth grunted, backing away and settling back on his haunches. His eyes never left N'ik, who stared right back with the haughtiness of a man who knew that he had won a competition. "Well, maybe next time Emmy shouldn't interfere, Killer."

Luca winced slightly. Ever since P'tal and Shumath, the nickname had taken on a new unpleasant nature. She could never tell N'ik that, though. It would be weak, and he meant no harm by it. "Eh, fardle off. What're you doing here, anyway?" She was glad to see him, of course, but now that they were no longer pretending to kill each other, she was extremely surprised. Never in the four Turns that she and Emmeth had lived at Vaioa had N'ik visited. They'd written one another on occasion, and Luca and Emmeth had started visiting High Reaches after the food poisoning incident, but N'ik had never come to them.

N'ik smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. "Well, if you must know, Ferrivoth and I are the newest bluepair in Granite. We just moved in today, and we're starting drills tomorrow." He knew, of course, that Granite was his sister's wing. That was why he had asked to be placed there, though in the end, it was luck that had gotten him drafted. He was pleased by Luca's reaction: her eyes bugged, her jaw dropped, and then she grinned at him like he was the sun. It had been too long since he'd felt that kind of blind hero worship.

"Feck! N'ik, that's...feck." And then she was hugging him, and N'ik chuckled, wrapping his arms around her tiny frame and squeezing.

"How about you and me get a drink, killer? By the way, you reek. Do they not have baths at Vaioa?"
