Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was difficult for Zahrai to believe that there were still people gullible enough for fall for the shell game, and yet here she was with her hollowed out blocks and bell, pretending to be the fool who didn't realize how noisy those bells would be while shuffling those blocks around. That she'd already slipped the bell out from under the block and had one tucked into an open seam in her sleeve to make the appropriate jingles was only natural, and not for the player to realize. She wasn't betting much for each turn, only 1/32 of a mark, but it added up quickly when prideful candidates started challenging her.

She'd set up shop on one of the side tables in the center of the barracks. It was out of the way, the red head wasn't interested in getting too much attention. This was more to see who was gullible enough to show belief that they'd chosen the wrong block then anything. If she was being entirely honest with herself it was also reassuring to be around something familiar while she was adjusting to living someplace new yet again.

Zahrai eyed the small pile of change that she'd gathered so far and mused over what to use it for. She hated owing people, and she owed the search rider who fetched her away from the weaver's hall more then she'd ever owed someone before. Perhaps she could buy them a gift of thanks and even things out. Even if she wasn't sure how Vaioa functioned anything was better then trying to learn a craft that she had no talent for, and found no enjoyment in. This place seemed a little more relaxed. Her type, candidates or whatever, were kept on a short leash, but a lot of the weyrfolk or riders were bawdy and enjoying life to the fullest. Not necessarily her normal crowd, but better then the alternative. She was pleased to be here, was her emotional summary.

As the last boy who'd been watching for the past few minutes tried his hand, failed to find the bell (obviously), and went away puzzled, she took a quiet moment as a chance to examine the room. Maybe she'd let the next few people win. Wouldn't hurt her too much, and it was better to mix it up. The small success that was the shell con had left her with a warm fuzzy feeling, and so it was with a genuine smile that she cast her gaze upon another girl sitting nearby. "Care to give it a try? See if you do better then that kid?" She gestured to the last unfortunate who attempted her game. "Shouldn't be hard. He could hardly keep his eyes on the cups."

Margo deliberated from her armchair, weary and reluctant to trust. She’d watched the marks accumulate while the bell was conspicuously spirited away with each new round. Now she fingered the pouch on her belt, hand cupped protectively around the paltry sum stashed within.

“I don’t keep much on me. Habit.” Her smile was as thin as her platitudes, as Margo worried one of the wooden coins through the worn leather of the pouch. She could feel the eyes of the room gravitating towards her, all the same. The room was winding down for the night, and she was providing ample distraction for its bored occupants.

“Um.” She frowned at the row of blocks, not yet confident that she’d worked out their secrets. “I’ll give it a try, I guess.” There was something in the other girl’s smile that drew her closer, niggling at the back of her mind as she smiled wanly back.

“How does it work again?” She’d buy herself time to puzzle it out. What “it” was she couldn’t say at this point.

Zahrai caught the reluctance wafting off the other girl, and kept up her welcoming grin in turn. Reluctance wasn't a huge obstacle, especially as there was little else going on at this hour. She nodded at the excuse, not replying, letting the girl talk herself into trying it anyway. There was always a way, especially as she'd been planning on playing a sincere round first. Drawing a mark from a mark slowly, patiently. Internally she giggled at the play on words. Too much fun.

“It's not complicated. I place the bell under a block of your choosing, shuffle them and you try to pick out where it ends up! Of course, I've got fast hands, so the real challenge in this game is concentration.” Zahrai picked up the block on the right and revealed the small, round bell. She plucked it off the table with two fingers and shook it, causing a light jingling. “I even make sure you can use several senses to help locate it.”

She rolled the bell back and forth over the backs of her fingers a few times before tossing it up, catching it, and placing it gently back on the wooden tabletop. “If you've never played before we'll even do a round without a wager involved. Betting marks if it's all new to you wouldn't be fair.” The candidate insinuated sympathetic tones into the words, see, they were all friends and buddies. With large hand motions Zahrai placed the bell under the middle block. After looking back at the girl to make sure she had her attention, she began shuffling. The middle block went to the left, right, back to the middle, right, now the other two moved, and on and on at a fast pace until Zahrai felt confident much of the room would have lost track of the positions, with the bell ending on the left. Normally she wouldn't care so much, but having not removed the bell from the original position it needed to be convincing.

“So where d'you think?” The red head raised an eyebrow at her target. Would she get it right? Or would her loss inspire others to try?

Margo’s smile slipped as she listened with furrowed brow to Zahrai’s brisk explanation. The woman’s hands were in constant motion, forcing Margo to loosen her grip on the words streaming past her ears so that she could focus instead on the nimble fingers toying with a glint of silver and a tinkling chime.

“That sounds reasonable.” A glinting smile sealed the deal, eyes unfocused when she came back up for conversation. Robbed of the finer details, the other girl felt more approachable. Margo humored the thought for half a beat, before the game began and her eyes dropped to the playing field once more.

The blocks darted this way and that, but Margo didn’t hesitate to tap the left block once she was sure Zahrai had finished her manipulations.

“That one. I’m almost positive, I might have lost it on the last loop.” She frowned consideringly, but surrendered with a shake of her head. “No, it’s that one.” Her mind was trained entirely on the game, suspicions temporarily shrugged aside while they pitted their wits against one another.

Underneath her cheerful smile Zahrai was surprised, and a little displeased, that Margo picked out the left block instantly. Maybe she should have put bells underneath every block for this round, and when Margo guessed one lifted a different block to reveal the goal, or what would look like the goal unless someone barged over and tried to mess up the row. Ah well, a strategy for a different day. For now acknowledgment was necessary.

“Right you are.” The girl chimed, lifting the indicated block and letting the bell roll free. “Very nice there. But I can go faster still.” Subtly watching Margo with her peripheral vision she moved the bell back to the middle, resetting the stage. The possibility of marks being wagered crossed Zahrai's mind, but no, now there was more on the line. She personally wanted to find a way to stump this amateur. It would be utterly offensive to Zahrai's background if she couldn't win even without cheating. Well. Sort of. Her father would never have risked doing anything without a back up illusion. The thought made her chuckle openly. Maybe she was over complicating all of this. Marks had already been earned, a nice stack that she could use at the coming gather, and she wasn't going to risk losing them to prove a point.

Her eyes lined with amusement, she shook her head at Margo. “Or we can switch things up. Wanna have a go?” She pushed the blocks, bell still hidden, across the table to her opponent. They were unpolished to allow for a better grip, no slipping on gleaming surfaces. The trick was also more awkward to handle then the traditional cup shaped shells, but the cube allowed for more hidden area and less obvious sleight of hand. “If you win, I'll show you a trick.” Not the blocks, not with everyone watching, but Zahrai had a set of cards in her bag that she could demonstrate something basic from. It had been... a long time since Zahrai had offered to show another kid her age something. Never at the weaver hall, a glimpse of her old behavior there and they'd have sent her packing back to Fort. But turns and turns ago, there'd been kids around her age she'd played these games with... faces and names were fuzzy, but it had been a fun time in her life.
