Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Jiraela didn't make many weyr calls. Normally if her patients were in bad enough shape to need one, they were already under observation in the Infirmary. Now, she wasn't an intensivist or dragonsurgeon, but a broken bone in the right place could be life threatening. After all, dislocated cervical vertibrae killed instantaneously. As far as she knew, her trip today wouldn't be nearly that serious. Her patient was an older rider and his dragon, a pair she wasn't very familiar with but she had her notes.

It wouldn't be an easy visit.

First was the climb. As fit as Jiraela still was thanks to Weyrlife, her hip and knee throbbed by the time she made it to the right level, and she made a mental note to get a slightly longer cane to avoid the stress to her shoulder. Sari crooned softly from Jynx's shoulder and rubbed her head along Jynx's cheek affectionately. The Healer closed her eyes to steady herself, the all-too-familiar scent of dragon musk permeating the back hallway and reminding her too keenly of what she lacked. And the pair she was visiting today had been bonded for almost three decades.

That was the second thing.

Third was her lack of foreknowledge. She wasn't entirely sure why she was making this trek in the first place. The appointment note had been very vague, which led her to believe that the Healer who made the appointment hadn't been very thorough in their questions. Well. Nothing could be changed now. Opening her eyes, Jiraela continued once more and sought the inner door she required.

"Ah, here we are, Sari," she spoke softly, adjusting her travel kit on her shoulder while she watched the door. It merely stood there, silent. Why didn't she knock? She made a fist, raised it, but froze. Get a grip, she chided, relaxing her hand and shaking it loose. Weyr calls were always difficult. She'd had a dragon but never a weyr. Swallowing hard and shoving her fragility behind a wall of professional conduct, Jiraela rapped smartly on P'si's door and called clearly, "Healer here."

If the Healer's here, tell her I'm dying right now! Galleth moaned, raising his neck in interest nevertheless.

"Sure, buddy. What the Shell did you think you were doing, chasing her that close? Respect, Galleth!"

I would have caught her in a few moments! Galleth protested.

"Whatever. Come on in!" he called, wandering over to the door.

"Thanks for coming in, Galleth's been out of his mind with pain."

Jiraela was terrible with names, but she could recognize a dragon anywhere. As soon as the bluerider allowed her in and she spotted the injured beast, she knew him. No wonder the notes on him were sparse. The journeymen Jynx had sent to tend him originally were fairly green. Green Healers tended toward brevity in their notes, not concision. Yes, there was a marked difference.

"Healer Jiraela," she greeted with a small, respectful nod to the seasoned rider. "Your dragon was in the flight accident," she only half-asked, almost certain she was correct. Sari chirped a friendly greeting from Jynx's shoulder, certainly a friendlier one than the Healer was giving. Shards, she hated working on her dragon patients. Hated being around their riders more. And yet she was driven to ensure no other rider suffered what she did daily.

"What's his chief complaint?" Best get on with it then. The sooner she tended to the blue's hurts, the sooner she could return to the Infirmary and her comfort zone. She was in control in the Infirmary. Here? She wasn't so sure.

"Yeah," P'si said, gritting his teeth. Whyever did she need to know? She was a sharding Healer, wasn't she? Heal his dragon!

"He's been wailing about his tail and his forepaw ever since the accident, lady. Take a look at that."

This was why she hated working on dragons. Nevermind that she had to work intimately with them, a constant reminder that she had failed to keep the one that mattered most alive. Oh no. Jynx hated working with dragons because of their riders. She was already heading for the dragon when P'si's hostility made her grit her teeth.

"Have him extend his foreleg," she barely kept her tone civil, setting her supply bag down and kneeling by it to pull out the wide bandage she'd likely have to use. From the looks of things, the dragon hadn't received the proper treatment, possibly due to the rider's aggression. "I'll see what I can do for his tail after tending his wrist." Not that she owed P'si any explanation, but Jiraela was already on edge from having to head to someone's weyr. She would give P'si as little room to complain of her care as possible.

I know it hurts, sweetheart, but you've got to extend your forepaw. Easy now, just so she can look at it, got that?

Okay.
Galleth replied, a mewl touching his tone. The break was even but painful, and he moved as little as he could to avoid jostling the delicate hand-bones.

I AM CALLING SERLIATH! Galleth wailed, now in full-out drama mode. Her and Hers are our FRIENDS and they will HELP US!

Serliath landed a few seconds later, all shining Green body and worried yellow eyes.

Galleth? Galleth, dear, you must calm down. The woman is here to help you, and she'll make you feel all better.

Galleth's eyes stopped whirling, and the pale wrist extended.

C'zel took P'si's hand as the big man turned away from the scene. Seeing Serliath in her element was comforting, but right now he had to concentrate on P'si.

"Don't lash out now, you big lump. Let her do her job, you understand, buster?"
P'si growled and snorted, eyes firmly fixed on C'zel's hands holding his-smooth, unbroken.

"Thanks, man."

If this weyr call lasted too long, Jiraela was going to leave it shaking. Already she could feel the tension creeping up her spine while she waited for the blue to do as she bid. Meanwhile, she busied herself by fastening together the splint she'd need to use on the blue's wrist. Broken dragon bones were always tricky to treat simply due to the creatures' large sizes. If a queen ever broke a femur...shards, they'd need every other queen in the Weyr to keep her still and then bronzes working in tandem with Healers to get the leg in traction. Jiraela was very glad she only had a blue wrist to deal with.

The arrival of the green was...unexpected. If Jynx was uncomfortable, now she was downright perturbed. Gritting her teeth, Jiraela focused on the blue limb extending and stood with long splint in hand. It was similar to one she'd use on a human femur but with a leather strap that fastened behind the dragon's elbow and stiff fabric between both splints, almost like a very short stretcher. Had Galleth been any bigger, she might not have been able to do this single-handed.

"This is going to sting," she warned as she approached, laying the splint open and ready for when she realligned the bones. "Try to stay calm," she told the blue directly, trying to keep her own uneasiness buried. It touched nothing on her expression, but her hands trembled slightly as she started her brief exam of the blue's wrist. She desperately hoped the break wasn't bad and that his tail wasn't serious. Jynx wanted out of that weyr as fast as she could get.

Galleth, Galleth, this is going to hurt, but you must concentrate on ME, now. Serliath said importantly. I'd never let ANYTHING hurt you, would I? Now hold still and-

The scream ripping through the Weyr was, in a word, incredible.

Let it all out, Galleth! Serliath said, tail lashing in sympathy.
Once the screams subsided and the wrist had been bandaged, Serly extended her nose to Jiraela's shoulder.

Oh, you were so brave, young lady! she said, eyes whirling blue and green.

Thank you for helping my friend!

The exam didn't take long. The reset even less so. Yet Jiraela desperately wished that she could go deaf for the brief minutes it took her to set and bind the broken limb. Only one bone in the blue's wrist was damaged, so the surrounding tissue wouldn't be too greatly affected (possibly some swelling later), but his screams... Jiraela's spine prickled, and her hands completed the splint by rote in record time.

She never dealt well with a dragon's screams.

Sari reappeared while Galleth recovered from the setting and Serliath leaned her head near Jynx. The Bonemaster didn't look up and instead continued to repack her kit. Could she even examine the blue's tail now? She had to. If a vertebra was dislocated, the results could keep Galleth from flying.

"You're welcome," she gritted through her teeth, trying to ignore how tight her stomach was or the memories stirred by the blue's scream. Shards, why had she drawn the short stick for this? It would be the last weyr call she made, if she had anything to say about it. Her sanity could not take this kind of pressure. "Just doing my job." She forced herself to stand so she could get a better look at Galleth's tail that was hurting him so much.

"Greenrider, please keep your dragon silent," was more acidic and less professional than she intended. "Dragon voices give me a headache," was the weak and almost apologetic reply. Almost. And only because she had let some of her anxiety into her initial request. Could they see her shaking? "Now, about Galleth's tail. What's your range of motion? Can you swing it side to side?" Hopefully gently so she wouldn't have to dodge a dragon tail. Wouldn't that make a fine end to this visit?

Tell her I can't move it except the tip, and with a lot of pain. Galleth said very quietly to P'si.

"He says, he can't move it 'cept the tip." P'si grunted.

Serliath gave one more comforting whuffle onto Jiraela's shoulder, leaving thoughtful mental kisses as she left.

Poor girl, that I cannot speak to her without pain. she said to C'zel, who shut his eyes in sympathy, concentrating on P'si's pain more.
