Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The Hatching was approaching, and Thoia wanted to make sure her robes still fit and were in good condition. A small tear needed patching, so she was in the common room sewing it. Her skills were not excellent at sewing, but good enough for repairing work clothes or the course robes they wore for Hatchings.

As she sewed, Hope was happily playing with an empty spool. Batting it around, pouncing on it, and having a grand ole young flit time. Thoia could not help but chuckle at the green and decided to keep the now empty spool as a toy for the flit.

"How would you feel about a big green or grey sister, Hope? Would you teach a hatchling all she needed to know?" Not that Hope was an adult herself yet.

Hope chirped in answer, too busy playing for more than that.

Ashwyn was...displeased, to say the least. She had a favored spot in the candidates' lounge, a battered couch that most other candidates avoided when she was around. Normally, she was the first to claim it in the evenings, but she had spent the first candlemark of free time with Tarawyn. She had not thought to look at her sofa on the way to her room, so she couldn't have known that it was occupied. So, when she returned to the common room with her guitar in hand, she was faced with quite the dilemma.

To make matters worse, the candidate in her seat was Thoia. Of course. Intense, jealousy-based dislike boiled up in Ashwyn's gut. She felt a twinge of alarm, recognized it from Soreal. He was still with Tarawyn, basking in the creche children's attention and adoration. She could feel him preparing to return to her, though. Stay. She was Ashwyn, future queenrider of Vaioa. No dragon will want to look at your face for the rest of its life. Especially not a queen. Ashwyn scowled, stalking to claim her seat on the couch, as far from Thoia as she could manage within the limited space. She propped her guitar against the arm of the sofa, sneering at her former friend.

"Go do your drudgework somewhere else." It was a command, and she knew that a weaker-minded fool like Lessal would have scurried to obey. Lets see how weak you are, Thoia. Her eyes flickered to the little green firelizard. When did she get a flit?

Thoia suppressed a sigh. She had not really paid much attention to where she sat, though now that Ash was there and being territorial and rude, she remembered times sitting on the couch chatting and what not. Before the accident and before Ash decided to take it out on everyone and everybody, especially those who wanted to be there for her.

"Pretty sure this is the common area for a reason, Ash. It's open to everyone, even those who want to make sure their robe is in good condition before the Hatching. If you want to be alone, that's why you have a bunk." She was not about to let Ash bully her into anything.

Hope felt her person's irritation, frustration, exasperation and got curious enough to stop playing for a moment to watch.

Ashwyn's eyes narrowed. She did not, could not, fully face Thoia. The right side of her face was tilted away from the other woman. Of course, she, too, remembered the better times. After she had come to the Weyr, Thoia had been one of her first acquaintances. Friends. The weyrbred candidate had, admittedly, helped Ashwyn with the adjustment. Faranth, she'd been there through that dreadful pregnancy. But...looking at her now, all Ashwyn could see was another beautiful face that would only mock her and, in the end, hurt her own chances of Impressing. The faces of the beautiful people hurt. Ashwyn curled her lip into a sneer, sitting up straight and proper.

"Yes, it is the common area. Meaning that there are plenty of other seats. I suggest you go find one." So polite was her tone that some people might have missed the mocking, rude, and harsh bite to her command. She doubted that Thoia was that blind, but feigning sweetness with enemies was second-nature to her. It had always been second-nature, since her days at the Hold with Leoka.

Hazel eyes darted down to the robe in Thoia's hand, and something close to grief twisted in her stomach. Thoia had a chance. "Don't you think you're getting your hopes up for nothing? You're almost aging out, aren't you? What makes you think a dragon will pick you over all the young blood?" She turned her head away violently, unable to continue looking at the other candidate. Needing to do something with her hands, she picked up her guitar and lay it across her lap, draping her right arm comfortably over the curve of the body. If the headstock bumped Thoia, it was surely an accident.

"Funny, you don't own this couch." Thoia did not avoid looking at the other woman. Her scars did not bother Thoia. Scars were a part of weyr life as most everyone helped fight thread and a scar or two was unavoidable. Sure Ash's were bad, but they just showed she'd been working. So she did look at her, eyebrows raised.

She chuckled, not allowing Ash's neddling get to her. "I've a couple more turns to go, yet. If I were too old to impress then the age would be lower and I would not be allowed to continue to stand. More than one person has impressed in their very last chance." Thoia shrugged, "Dragons pick for their own reasons, so yes. I still have a chance." As do you.

If she were hit with the instrument. she didn't say anything about it. Ash could not be allowed to bully people, even Thoia, into giving her her way.

What felt like ages ago, Ashwyn thought that she might have approved of Thoia's steadfastness and clear inability to be bullied into submission. Admired it, even. That was a valuable quality to have in a friend and ally. In a foe, though, it was annoying as all shaffit. She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, the irritation clear on her face. Can't she just make herself useful and leave? Opening her eyes, Ashwyn looked anywhere but at Thoia. Her fingers picked an unknown melody on the guitar, all melancholy minor chords that resonated sadly through the wood of the instrument and into her own body. It calmed her some, helped her compose herself. Losing face in front of a foe was a great sign of weakness.

So, even though Thoia's chuckle grated on her nerves, Ashwyn forced a thin smile. She glanced at the older woman out of her peripheral vision. "If that helps you sleep at night, keep believing it. I'm sure the dragons would just love to Impress to a delusional...what did your sister like to call you? Old spinster? Flit-lady? Ah, well, either one would do. Accept reality now, Thoia. You're more likely to age out than Impress." As are you, the nasty voice of doubt hissed to her. She tensed, jaw tightening for a moment. No. I'm going to Impress a queen. Her fingers plucked the strings much too hard, and the sound was harsh and unpleasant.

"You weren't even Searched, were you? Aren't you just Standing because you're Weyr-born? Why would the dragons choose you over someone chosen by a Searchdragon?" Someone like me? She had to believe that she had the upper hand over the Weyr-born candidates because of that. It was one of her few causes of hope.

Despite her efforts, Thoia's expression showed a touch of sadness as Ashwyn used Thalia's good natured, sibling ribbing to attempt to wound her. It was not so much that Thalia's words misused were hurtful--though she imagined Thalia would be angry to hear anyone other than her or maybe Thad doing the ribbing--but that Ash would attempt to use them so. She smiled sadly as she remembered once a upon a time when her friend had defended her against her sister's teasing.

"Perhaps." She shrugged, not allowing the fact that Ashwyn's words did echo the doubt she felt on occasion. It would do no good for her or for other candidates, Ashwyn included, to give in to them. "But that is for the dragons to decide, not you or me for that matter."

"I was confirmed. It's not required, but my mother's Blue didn't care and did so anyway." She was glad of it because of the love for music she learned from Laliya and if said no would have asked to apprentice, and her mother's dragon was Blue and so while not a search dragon, he did have the ability and confirmed her. "If the weyrborn stood no chance, Ashwyn, we would not stand. We would apprentice or work in future roles in the weyr. The weyr is not so cruel as you like to believe."

How many times had Thoia tried to tell Ashwyn that dragons would not care if she were scarred before she gave up. Now all she had left with her former friend was refusing to give up on her, refusing to let Ashwyn push her all the way away.

"No Candidate stands that does not have a chance. None, Ashwyn."

A solid, sharp smack resonated throughout the common room as Ashwyn brought the flat of her palm down hard on the front of her guitar. She laughed humorlessly, finally turning the full force of her hideous face on Thoia. Let her see it. Own it. She can't hurt you if you own it. No one can. Lifting her chin, she smiled haughtily at the other woman. The sadness in Thoia's expression didn't go unmissed; Ashwyn used it as fuel, though it also pulled a twinge of guilt out of her. "You know what? I don't care." Yet, her heart sank. Thoia had been approved by a blue dragon. She was more competition than she had originally guessed. Wonderful. "Even if you were Searched or whatever, you're still going to get too old long before I do."

The more she looked at Thoia's face, into her eyes, the more she felt an inexplicable hatred towards her former friend. Thoia was so calm. She gave Ashwyn no emotional reaction, no matter how much she taunted her. It was frustrating, when all Ashwyn wanted was to make the other hurt. They should hurt as much as I do. "Believe what you like. We'll see who Impresses and who's left Standing." All she could do was hope that it was her who got the dragon. If Thoia Impressed before her, Impressed at all... No. She would not allow that possibility, not in her own head. No.

Closing her eyes as she turned her face away, Ashwyn smacked the guitar again with her palm, lighter this time. "So, where'd you get the flit? Not that I care. But most candidates get them when they realize that they're doomed to fail." She tried to affect disinterest, but there was no hiding the curiosity from anyone who knew her well enough.

Thoia was not so beyond reaction that she did not jump a bit when Ash hit her hand against the guitar the first time. She did, however, raise an eyebrow. It was not enough to harm the guitar, and she had never had the opportunity to learn that instrument, but still, she suspected that was not the ideal way to treat it. Hope however, did not like it at all and startled before glaring at the guitar.

At the sight of Ash's scars, Thoia did not react. For all the other woman seemed to think they were shocking, they had ceased to be that for Thoia a long time ago.

"Dragons choose," She reiterated, "For their own reasons and no scarring will turn away the right dragon. Maybe you'll like yourself better when you accept that."

Thoia stood to go when Ash spoke again. "My sister and brother gave me the egg. And perhaps it was to ease things if I age out, but I'm glad to have her. If you want to know where they got the egg, you'd have to ask them."

I'm sorry. Ashwyn told herself that she was apologizing to the guitar, for her rough treatment. She stroked the smooth wood where she had smacked it, as if in apology. But if she allowed herself to really stop and think about it--which she would never do, because that was weak--she would have realized that she was indeed apologizing to her old friend. Thoia had been one of her first friends in the Weyr. She had helped her settle in and adjust. And now she's your enemy. Accept it. Embrace it. Thoia was competition. Ashwyn as at a disadvantage now with her scars, and she had no chance of Impressing if she allowed herself to be weak. It was best to push distractions and foes away.

Dragons choose for their own reasons and no scarring will turn away the right dragon. Maybe you'll like yourself better when you accept that. Thoia's words were absorbed by her mind, and they festered their, echoing and echoing within her skull. Ashwyn's eyes stung.

The movement of the cushions made her glance up. Thoia had stood. Ashwyn knew that she should have been glad at that. She had won. Thoia was leaving. Thoia was giving up, accepting defeat. A prickling loneliness grew within her instead. Fine. Leave. The anger behind the thought was irrational, but Ashwyn never had been entirely rational. "That's nice. You're very lucky." There was, strangely, no malice behind the words this time.
