Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Sleep was just not happening. There was no particular reason for it. Harrison certainly wasn't the nervous sort and there was nothing coming up the next day, not even in the next couple of days that would warrant such anxiety as to prevent him from sleeping.

It wasn't even anxiety that did it. It wasn't that he couldn't relax. Screech had long since fallen asleep, so he didn't have the fire lizard's constant chatter to contend with. And even though the Blue snored, he never snored so loudly that it was disruptive. Harrison had gotten used to the slight hum of the small, spunky flit's breathing.

He just simply couldn't sleep. Normally, thinking eventually lulled him into slumber. He would link thought upon thought and ultimately become tired, his musings distorting until they no longer made sense and were no longer even something he paid mind to.

But that didn't seem to happen tonight. He thought, but his thoughts never edged him towards drowsiness - never became comforting nonsense. He just thought, and thought. And then tried to hum, then tried to tap his fingers and his feet. Nothing tired him out.

So, half a candlemark prior to current time, he'd given up. He left his room in the Candidate Barracks and moved to sit in the common area. Like always, he lounged on one of the couches. Recently, he'd become more mindful that maybe he shouldn't always take up so much space. Perhaps the couches really should be used by multiple people, as they were intended, instead of his stretched out form.

No one else was awake now, though. Or at least it seemed that way. At the very least, no one else was here. So, he splayed himself over the couch and took to daydreaming, hoping that thinking here, by the fire, would perhaps tucker him out in a way that lying in his bed had not.

Sometimes, when she couldn't sleep, Ayanna would count numbers until she either ran out of them or had to start making them up. When she wanted a challenge she'd switch around the increments she was counting by. By fives...by nines....by threes...sevens, twelves, twenty-two's. But tonight the numbers in her brain were just an uncomfortable jumble of hard edges that weren't soothing at all, and she sat up in her cot with a quiet huff of aggravation.

It would do her no good to just lay around and hope she'd eventually conk out. Every time she'd tried that before she'd just annoyed herself into being even more awake. Maybe a change of scenery would help.

She slid her feet into the thin-soled slippers she padded around in whenever boots weren't necessary, wrapping a blanket around her shoulders for good measure before setting out towards the shared candidate's lounge.

Did Weyrlings have something similar? For all her investigating she'd still never managed to poke her nose into the weyrling barracks, even though the young dragons were always so fascinating. So tiny and darling, future warriors rendered in miniature.

Yaya meandered into the common room, making it half way to one of the couches before noticing another candidate sprawled out on one already. She perched herself in a chair adjacent, gathering her blanket tighter around her as she settled in. The fire dancing in the hearth cast flickering shadows in the dim room, most of the glows extinguished since it was technically after curfew.

"Trouble sleeping?" She finally asked, feeling (as usual) nosy. "Or do you usually come out here at night?"

The intrusion on his time alone with his thoughts does not bother him. After all, it wasn't as if Harrison was thinking of anything important. So it is, with hands behind his head, that he answered simply. "Trouble sleeping," he confirmed. "Bed's comfier than the couch."

Indeed if sleeping were actually in the cards for this night, he wouldn't have been out in the common room. The place was quant, cozy, but not quite conducive to a proper sleep. Though, who knew? Sometimes when drifting towards slumber was proving difficult, a change of scenery, despite how comfy or uncomfy it was, could be exactly what one needed.

Harrison turned to Ayanna, then. He didn't really know the girl. He recognized her from classes but they hadn't ever really spoken anywhere outside of them. She seemed to be closer to Kellyn's age than his own. "'Harrison', by the way," he said in way of introduction. It wasn't the classiest introduction, but it was some terrible candlemark of the morning by now. Harrison couldn't sleep but he was well tired. He could worry about not having been classy enough by the time Rukbat's light rolled around.

"So," he began, sitting up, "what about you? Are you just kind of a night wanderer?"
