Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

((Omg I'm sorry this is so long. Mind if we fuzzy-time this to before the tithing plot?))

Evening in Vaioa. It would be very late in Benden. Mid-autumn meant she'd have plenty of time to integrate with new Wingmates and finish Infirmary orientation before Thread fell in spring. Perhaps late spring at that. Benden was much, much colder than Vaioa. Much wetter. She'd have to brush up on dragon respiratory ailments and any local herbs to treat them. Frostbite as well. Hypothermia, though dragons didn't suffer from that nearly as readily as humans. These thoughts went into a mental checklist, which she'd write down later, while she took inventory of her few possessions.

Meanwhile, a green dragon glared with crimson eyes.

We are not transferring.

Vinsica braced her hands on her desk and dropped her head. This old argument wearied her. They'd held it every single time Vinny even thought about a transfer request. They'd had this argument while Vinny was still laid up in the Infirmary with tubes in her chest. And after the resulting infection left her unable to rejoin their Wing.

"Don't ask me to stay here, Pileeth." Which was a new response, and one that had even the angry green holding her tongue. Tired words. Exhausted words. But Pileeth didn't hold her tongue for long.

Why not? she demanded and didn't give her rider a breath to answer. You've been happy here. Actually happy. You were challenged in your craft, your Wingmates weren't just faces and names, you're allowed to teach, and have saved lives here! Why would you leave that?

Vinny almost laughed, but she was too tired. The chest infection had sapped much from her reserves. She'd lost weight and stamina and was still on restricted duty even three months after she'd been cleared. The cynic in her believed the light duty was not wholly from her health, an not even logic could remove that dark ideal.

"My decisions are questioned. My involvement in any patient who dies is 'bad luck.' My rank and skill mean nothing. They don't see my knots anymore. Only this matters," she finished bitterly, holding up her white-bandaged forearm. She couldn't bear to look at the mark that set her apart, made others distrust her even after a turn of exemplary service. "I can't practice with or on people who think I'm going to kill or sabotage them."

You act as though that mark of yours is all that matters!

"I've spent my life trying to wipe it away!"

Oh woe are you, Pileeth drolled with a toss of her head. Marked for a crime you don't remember. Tell me, Vinsica. Are you that same girl? The one with blood on her hands?

"You know what they said at the Hall, Pileeth? When the rider dropped me off, the master refused me at first. He'd never allow a Shunned to learn such a noble craft, he said," the Healer started, leaning against her desk when her knees lost their strength. "It was the rider who convinced him otherwise. Do you know how?"

Pileeth knew she was being baited, so she dipped her head unhappily and rumbled her acknowledgment that she didn't know. How could she? This information had always been locked away from her, behind walls not even a dragon's bond could break.

"He said that if I failed, it was to be expected of an illiterate Shunned girl. But if I were to succeed, well...Pern always needs more Healers," she finished derisively, cynically.

And none of what you've accomplished means anything? You really believe that? The green shook her head, snorting her disbelief. If your life is worth so little, why did you fight so hard to live? Answer me that. Why not give up, let the infection take you? The rumor had spread by then. Others came by to see, saw your bandaged arm and thought the rumor was true. So why fight on knowing you'd face them, face everyone with your secret shame known? You're afraid of the few people who don't care about that sharding mark. Why not die than risk facing them too?

Why indeed. Vinny couldn't meet her dragon's gaze, couldn't answer her question. She remembered one moment when the journeyman had not used numbweed while cleaning her wounds. The pain had almost driven her from consciousness, driven Pileeth from her in fear, and she knew that she didn't want to die. It had shocked even she, who routinely ignored her own safety to treat others. Yet she'd fought infection and fatigue, endured the scorn of many of her fellows, and for what? Her expression hardened and she pushed herself up, returning to her task.

"You won't even remember Vaioa in a couple sevendays," she said coldly and turned away and didn't see Pileeth flinch.

Fine. Pack. You're just afraid I'm right.

Shoulders tense, Vinny braced against her desk, staring at the colorful mug and already regretting the hurt she felt from Pileeth. She should turn around, apologize, ease that hurt, except she had no intention of changing her mind. The apology would be false. She dropped her head and breathed, just for a moment, before picking up the mug. It's glaze gleamed in the glowlight, and she never did discover who had left it on her Infirmary desk.

That was before, though. Before her mark was made public by injury. Would the same person be so kind now? All she saw were the glares and guarded glances. Pileeth wished she saw the others, how apprentices she taught looked to her for guidance, grateful riders when their dragons recovered. But her rider was blind to this, blind even as she delicately wrapped the mug in a scarf, a memory of the kindness of a stranger. A memory she feared but dared not leave behind.

Aislyn was pissed. Now she'd been grumpy for the past few months since she had been grounded, her patience had never been good to begin with but it was thinning more and more as the days went by. And when she'd heard the rumor about a certain healer getting a transfer, well, her temper decided to make an appearance. Before she knew it, the red head was heading up towards Vinsica's weyr like a woman on a mission. Struggling a bit because she was still in the middle of physical therapy and this only made her anger rise.

Maybe you should wait to go see those two. At least until after you've calmed down a bit. Roduth attempted to intervene, not wanting his rider to end up ruining the 'friendship' that she'd been working so long on getting.

Calm down? She put in for a transfer! She's just going to leave! How am I supposed to be calm about that? Aislyn's lips pulled back as she growled quietly to herself. Had the healer been so unused to the fact that she had a friend now that she hadn't even thought about mentioning this decision to her? She'd thought their relationship had actually gotten better after that day in the infirmary. The copperrider hadn't even asked a single question about the mark regardless of how curious it had made her.

Why are you so angry about this? It's ultimately her choice in what she does. You have no say in the matter.

Why am I so angry about this? Because she's giving up. Yes, she'd heard the rumors and what not but since Vinny had fought so hard against the infection and what not that she would put up more of a fight with these rumors. But she was basically just giving up, letting the scorn of other's end up driving her away. Or at least that's how it looked. And fardle it all but Aislyn was not about to let someone she considered a friend get away with doing something like that without a fight.

After finally getting up to the right level and finding the door to the greenrider's weyr, Aislyn didn't even bother with knocking. That would mean she was here for polite conversation and give Vinsica the chance to shut the door in her face. Again. Storming in, as much as she could, the red head walked as far in as she could before she caught sight of Vinny. Her eyes glanced over to Pileeth, noticing she looked as pleased about this whole thing as she did. That had a very slight smirk tugging at her lips before the frown was back and she was glaring right at the healer. "What the feck is this about a transfer?"

Word traveled quickly in a Weyr. Between the dragon population and drudges, it was amazing anything stayed secret at all. Despite Healers having reputations for discretion--and those held true for patient confidentiality--gossip was a valuable commodity and traded freely. Within two days of her regaining consciousness after her initial injury and necessary sedation, she had multiple visitors. Never to speak with her. Merely to talk about her in hushed whispers. She'd grit her teeth and pretended to sleep. She could only hope that rumor didn't follow her to Benden. A clean slate there, where no one knew her nor her secret. A pariah of her own doing, which was somehow easier to live with than others shunning her.

She turned around and leaned her hips against her desk, unwrapping the mug and cradling it in her hands. Almost casual she was, the day's heat yet to abate and she out of her typical Healer scrub top. The scrub pants were loose and comfortable, and a sleeveless top let her breathe a little easier, forget the stresses of her craft. The only formality was the pristine white bandage covering most of her forearm. Even her hair was down since she hadn't bothered tying it back after her bath. This weyr was her domain. Hers and Pileeth's.

Was it home? Was she really that afraid of facing the scorn of the many and the compassion of the few? Criticism was a familiar companion. Doubt as well. They challenged her to perform, to excel. The outright hatred she'd seen reminded her of her first turns in the Hall, before she'd learned to hide what she was. Vaioa had proven no different. One whiff of Shunned and trust shattered. If confidence was that easy to break and so hard to earn, had Vaioa really been home? Or had this very weyr merely given her the illusion of sanctuary?

One that was violated unexpectedly.

The sound of her weyr's inner door opening startled Vinny. As far as she knew, only she used that entrance. The door connected to a tunnel, yes, but only after several flights of stairs on the exterior of the cliff, and the weyr was a long way up. More private that way. It discouraged random drop-ins. So who the shards...

Pileeth could have bugled happily at Aislyn's arrival if she wasn't so pissed off at her rider. Instead, the green watched the copperrider with eyes only slightly less hostile than her gaze at Vinny. As for the Healer...

"Word certainly travels fast," she commented drolly, not at all concerned about Aislyn's mood. The red head practically glowed for the anger she kept in rein. Or maybe she was waiting for the right moment to unleash it.

In case you were wondering, she's one of the friends o mentioned earlier, Pileeth interrupted with no small amount of acid in her tone. Don't pretend you don't see that. You're not that oblivious to human emotion. The opposite in fact. Pileeth knew her rider to be reserved partially because she could read and empathize with emotion so well. Keeping everything at arm's length made that easier to handle. Vinny ignored her green for now and set the mug beside her on her desk before crossing her arms over her chest.

"Alright. I know you didn't hike all the way up to see if it's true," she started, looking resigned to her fate. "Out with it then. Pileeth's probably beat you to the punch on most of it anyway." Ah yes. Someone was also in a mood. Maybe it was some of Pileeth's anger bleeding over or a bubbling of her own. Better to be angry than appear weak due to fear, and anger would give her energy when her reserves were spent.

Roduth, feel free to get comfortable on my ledge. You should fit, the green offered her large friend, trying--and failing--to keep her ire out of her voice. The copper deserved none of that, but Pileeth was furious, livid at Vinny's inconsiderate and careless and cowardly transfer request. Pileeth had had enough. Perhaps Aislyn could help and force Viny to see reason and stop caring so sharding much about a fardling brand.

As Aislyn actually looked at Vinsica instead of just glaring she noticed that not only was she currently looking completely different than she was used to, but she was also cradling the cup that she'd picked out for the healer. A small part of her was pleased at the sight of her gift being treated like that, while another part of her was even more pleased at the chance to get to see the usually stiff healer dressed comfortably and looking relaxed causing her face to soften just a bit. But then her anger was back in full force at the comment from Vinny.

Fighting back the urge to growl at the woman, Aislyn gave a quick shake of her head. She seemed to not be concerned about the red head's anger, that was a mistake but an understandable one. Vinsica hadn't actually had a chance to see it or hear about it after all. She was about to get a crash course in it though. How could Vinny be so calm about this? Was it so easy for her to just pack everything up and leave friends behind? Did Vinny even consider her as a friend or was she still just an annoyance? Even after all this time.

Take a deep breath, Aislyn. You don't want to make her angry.

Maybe I do. It'd be better than just seeing her running away with her tail in between her legs. She shot back, not in the mood for Roduth and his calming techniques. There were times when yes, she got angry at things she didn't need to. But this was something different, this deserved some anger and by the egg she was going to make sure Vinsica knew all about it. "I shouldn't need to have hiked all the way up here to see if it's true." But hey, at least it was practice for her leg anyways. She did need to build up the muscles again. Grumbling, Aislyn gave a quick shake of her head. "What? You're just going to stand there while I yell? Like it isn't something I should be angry about?"

How could Vinny act like this? If it had been Aislyn transferring would the other woman even care? Sending a quick glance over at Pileeth, she let out snort. "Oh I'm sure she's tried to talk some sense into that thick head of yours." Glancing around the weyr, she headed to the closest spot to sit down before flopping over. This was going to probably take a while, might as well get comfortable. "You're just gonna transfer out of here? Retreat like some coward just because of some people who have sticks shoved so far up their tailforks they can't walk properly?"

Roduth noted the way Pileeth's voice was different than usual, but he knew it wasn't directed at him. She was probably feeling much like Aislyn at the moment. Maybe at least one calm head could prove useful should things get too out of control. Thank you, Pileeth. He replied, leaving his previous post to head to the green and his rider were. The bigger dragon was careful as he landed, not wanting to accidently harm the smaller green before he was settling down to get comfortable. I apologize for Aislyn and anything she may do or say. I tried to get her to stay away until she was calmed down but, well, she's stubborn you know.

"Calm" wasn't exactly the word to describe Vinny at that moment. She was anything but calm, but scorch her if she allowed that to show. Her cool expression seemed to rile Aislyn even more, which was curious. Vinsica had never gotten that reaction from someone. Normally her steadiness was reassuring, comforting even, during busy Infirmary candlemarks or crises. Never had it been inflaming. The reasons why were no doubt fascinating, but they likely delved into the personal realm, and Vinny wasn't willing to venture there.

You're scared, Pileeth continued mercilessly, and Vinny couldn't disagree, couldn't argue that fact. She was afraid. Her personal life had been nonexistent once she'd progressed enough in her craft to function with relative independence. If asked what she liked to do in her spare time, Vinny only had Healing-related answers: study herbs, practicing her stitches, review Hall dispatches with the latest research and techniques. If she had to limit her answer to non-craft activities, well...flying with Pileeth. But all riders enjoyed flying with their dragons. Not a unique response. She never wanted to be unique, only successful. Vaioa had proven that her efforts to pay penance for her brand were useless.

"Yes, please, make yourself comfortable," she said in a mockery of courtesy when Aislyn found a seat and fell into it. The copperrider was the first person who'd ever seen Vinny's weyr, and the greenrider felt the violation. Yet the Healer in her wondered if the climb had been too much for her recovering knee and shin. The human in her didn't care. For once, human and Healer disagreed. Anger did boil beneath the surface, but Vinny kept a tight rein on the emotion. Habit. Remain in control of herself and give others a rock to lean on. Except it had the opposite effect on Aislyn tonight, and Vinny wasn't even in total control of herself.

"Those tailforks and their sticks don't trust me to practice, not now. Not after a turn's worth of work proving my skill," she argued, keeping her words in the realm of Healing and not personal. Nothing personal. She didn't want to delve there even though Pileeth continued to dredge pleasant memories of Vaioa from where Vinny buried them. "One whiff that I was Shunned and they turned. It's happened before. As an apprentice, during my first journeyman rotation, my last transfer to High Reaches. You'd think I'd be used to the derision by now." She shook her head, self-deprecating at its finest.

"You know what the irony is?" she tilted her head, a humorless smile hardening her features. "I don't even remember why I was Shunned. Not that it matters. If I stay here, I doubt I'll ever be trusted enough to practice independently again. All I've ever wanted to do was make up for this damn mark, but the moment someone sees it..." she shrugged suggestively and barely kept her temper in check. Only Pileeth had heard this side of the story before. It was an old argument.

For her part, the green shifted inside her weyr to her couch, giving Roduth the entire ledge to work with. Wings buffeting air heralded his coming, and Pileeth watched the darkness expectantly. Roduth didn't disappoint with his offers of apology. The green had figured he would be the calm head of the four of them. She snorted. No apology needed, she countered, still heated from her rider's selfish cowardice. Vinny needs anger. She won't listen to me. Maybe hearing my arguments from Aislyn will finally get through to her. Someone needs to give her a strong whack on the head. And if Aislyn could do it, Pileeth was all for it. She'd even provide the stick.

Regardless of how angry she currently was at Vinsica, Aislyn couldn't help but snort to herself at the comment the other woman said. "I will, thanks. Someone's gotta knock some sense into you and it looks like it will take some time. Considering the climb, I'm gonna get as comfortable as possible." She retorted, crossing her arms over her chest and giving Vinny a smug smirk. Yes, she was slightly aware of the fact that she had basically violated the healer's privacy by barging right on into her weyr. The red head might worry about it later but this was the easiest way to not only get Vinny's attention but actual chew her out about her idea of a transfer.

While Vinsica might've been good at remaining in control of herself, Aislyn was not. She might've started learning how to keep her temper in check but she was still quick to anger and eager to lash out. While she did consider the Healer a friend she was not out of reach of these emotions. Especially considering it was her fool idea in the first place.

"Oh? And what of those people who trust you. Who could care less about the fact that you have that mark on you?" Had people been giving the other woman trouble? Because limping or not Aislyn was more than willing to kick a few tailforks to make sure they remembered how often Vinsica was in the Infirmary taking care of them and their dragons. She wasn't Shunned. She was a dragonrider and a healer. Why did people always focus so much on the past. Even with that Aislyn was still pretty sure that Vinny was running away from her problems.

A quiet growl rolled around in the red head's chest as she ran a frustrated hand through her hair. "I've seen your mark and honestly I'm still here. I still trust you. You've spent so much time trying to make up for things you can't even remember. That's ridiculous." Was that what she'd spent so much time worry about? "You run away and you're just letting them win. Stay and show them that you're better than them." Why would she feel the need to make up for something that she couldn't even remember? Honestly Aislyn just didn't get Vinsica. Even with those sorts of thoughts, wouldn't she have made up for it by now? How many candlemarks had Vinny spent in the infirmary working? The woman most likely over worked herself so often because of this need to prove herself.

Well, I suppose if it's anger she's looking for Aislyn is pretty good at that. She's not willing to let Vinsica run off like a 'coward'. Well that was the nice way of saying it. But he supposed if someone might be able to get through to a stubborn person it would be an equally stubborn person. Though I do hope no one will have to be hit by a stick. Not that he would let her and she probably wouldn't let herself do it either. She may be angry but she still liked Vinsica. She was after all trying to convince her to stick around.

While Aislyn made herself comfortable--and a made a point of doing so--Vinsica did not. It took much of her will-power to not cross her arms. A defensive gesture, and she wouldn't hold a defensive posture. That could imply she was wrong. But this was the right decision. It was the only decision that would let her continue her practice. With enough redwort and dragons saved, her brand wouldn't matter. That was her only hope at this point, that she could still redeem herself somewhere new.

Aislyn clearly didn't understand. Vinny couldn't remain still and take the verbal barrage. Constructive criticism she could handle in stillness. This? She started a pace, an outward sign of her agitation as her own temper became harder and harder to control. She'd never tolerated well having her motives or reasoning questioned, not in her craft. Having something so intimate under scrutiny was far, far worse.

"You're one of the few," she said flatly, expression darkening. She would not start down the 'woe is me' trail. She would not. Only logic. Logic, not emotion. "Dragons could die because of distrust. A hesitation in following my instructions, second-guessing my motives...do I really want to save my patient? Why would a Shunned want to save the symbol of Pern's order?" she asked with no small amount of self-directed derision. They were questions she'd heard before, in Vaioa and in Tillek after a similar injury to her recent one had revealed the same information to the same result.

"I can't prove to them anything," finally had a touch of temper in it, a desperate frustration she'd buried deeply. "They are better than me. They know it. I know it. Brands aren't for runner thieves or cardsharks. Crimes like extortion, murder, treason...those get you branded." And she remembered blood on her hands, a holding a dripping knife...those images haunted her nightmares. There were others, but they disappeared the moment she woke, leaving only a cold sweat and fear behind. Not even she realized that she'd admitted one of her deepest fears, that she was inferior and would only be known for her brand.

"No one wants a murderer holding their life," she practically snarled, finally crossing her arms over her chest while she paced and drawing in on herself. "If I make a mistake and my patient dies, was it intentional? If a dragon is crippled despite saving its life, did I not try everything? If the rider dies instead, did I let them by not calling another Healer soon enough?" Ever the cynic, Vinny had no shortage of sarcasm. "Tell me how I can answer these without trust."

She didn't want to face the other side of Aislyn's argument. The fact that yes, she was still there, had even wrapped her forearm when Vinny couldn't and hadn't asked a single question of her. Only now, after word of Vinny's transfer request had reached her, did Aislyn bring it up. No. Aislyn hadn't. Vinny had. No, that definitely wasn't an argument she wanted to face.

It's a figure of speech, Roduth, the green sighed, more than a little frustrated by the situation. Though a literal stick might help too. Two very stubborn people were currently arguing. There was no way this would stay civil. As if it had started that way. Aislyn can't fight her with logic. Vinsica has arguments for everything related to Healing. I've heard them all. And the green wasn't happy about it either, especially since she was hearing those same arguments used on Aislyn. Next she'll probably bring up the time she switched specialties to avoid her old masters who knew she was only in the Hall by their good graces. Assuming Vinny trusted Aislyn enough to reveal that memory.

"What can I say, I'm special." Aislyn responded, voice heavy with sarcasm as she watched the other woman start to pace. The fact that she was starting to lose that calm facade was a bit comforting to the red head. Much like any time she'd gotten an unexpected reaction from the Healer she couldn't help that little bit of pride that showed up at getting the chance to see it. Vinsica was always so in control of her emotions that it was hard not to take a bit of pleasure when she lost it like this.

"I'm sorry, did I miss something? Is that not a dragon over there? Do you not wear the knots of a rider?" Why was she so focused on that mark and not on what she'd accomplished since becoming a rider. "Stupid fardling people. Your brand became meaningless the moment you Impressed to Pileeth." At least that's what it felt like to Aislyn. Feck, the wher handlers had taken in whers that had been raised by bandits that had attacked Vaioa for quite some time. How were they able to do that so easily but seemed to disregard Vinsica's efforts to the Weyr and it's occupants.

Ahhh, so Vinny did have a temper. Aislyn had honestly began to wonder. Of course the moment the healer said that they were better than her and that she knew it, Aislyn's temper flared up hotter than before. "FECK THAT!" Jumping up, with only a slight wince, the red head glared at the other woman. "No one is better than anyone!" She paused as she realized what Vinny had said. Murder? The way Vinny said those crimes it was as if she...Hmm. No, it didn't matter. The past was the past, Vinsica had done so much good as a healer.

Then she was huffing and settling back into her claimed seat. Might as well let her get her arguments off her chest before she broke in with her objections. It wasn't likely that she would get any ground if she kept interrupting, regardless of how much she wanted to. "I don't think you're a murderer." Aislyn grumbled, "And I trust you with my life and that of Roduth's." But one person trusting Vinsica probably wouldn't be enough to sway her. There were sure to be more though, not everyone was so quick to give in to such things. No one here knew who Vinsica was in the past, they all only knew who she was now. Well, knew of who she was now.

"So basically you're saying that since you arrived at Vaioa everything you've done is questionable? Or just now that everyone knows about that stupid mark?" Was it really about about her mark or was there something else to it. Because she had a feeling it was something else, something more. "You're just going to suddenly change the way you work because people have heard about that," She waved a hand towards the other woman's forearm. "And are a bunch of dimglows who can't seem to think for themselves?" Because honestly, Aislyn had thought that Vinsica paid no mind to what people thought of her. She'd always been more concerned with work that people's opinions.

Roduth tried not to let on that he was a bit amused that Pileeth thought he was being serious about the stick. Don't tell Aislyn about that, she'd be bound to think about actually using physical means. The copper shifted a bit before settling his head down on his forearms. There wasn't much he could do but be here to keep Ais from losing too much of her temper. And maybe even offer some of his calmness to Pileeth considering how frustrated the green was sounding. A small snort escaped him. Aislyn doesn't usually fight with logic so she may be okay there. Yours would be the logical one, mine would be the emotional one. Seemed to fit. Aislyn usually rolled with her emotions, its why her angry dragged her all the way up to the green pair's weyr. I just hope Vinsica knows that mine isn't going to give up regardless of who 'wins' the argument.

Vinsica would have sworn the opinions of others didn't matter. Her successes spoke for themselves. The lives she'd saved, the limbs she'd mended, the lifebonds kept intact by her intervention... Her list of healed souls was long, each one a mark to her credit. And they could all be wiped clean by the one mark on her forearm. Every. Single. Time.

In her experience, it was far from meaningless.

"Good luck getting others to believe that," she muttered, tone starting to hold a vicious edge. Her pacing barely kept rein on her anger, her frustration, her sorrow and disappointment. Anger was easy to control. It was an all too common emotion that she kept in check. Frustration was even more common, but rarely did it bleed into her personal life like it was now. The latter two, ones she tried to avoid, were harder to ignore, but she'd rather be angry. She fed those flames, aided by Aislyn's clear misunderstanding of the situation.

Still, the copperrider's sudden outburst had even Vinny stopping, taking a step back. Only one step. Anger flashed to surprise, but that quickly dissolved into a small humorless smile. Just a twist of her lips, one that made Pileeth wince despite her own anger. This was hurting her rider. This argument was somehow laying open wounds Pileeth hadn't known existed. The fact that Vinsica didn't immediately defend herself was either catastrophic or promising. On one hand, she could be listening and absorbing Aislyn's blunt and merciless words. On the other, she could think herself not worth defending. Whatever the case, all thought of argument fled Vinny's mind, and Pileeth forgot why she'd been so upset a moment.

Is that true? she asked Roduth, already knowing the answer but needing to hear it anyway. With your lives? The concept wasn't new to Pileeth, but given what her rider was feeling and thinking, the green needed it to be true. Vinny needed it to be true. The Healer was stunned to stillness and silence, only able to watch as Aislyn regained her seat and continued her barrage of questions.

"You really don't understand, do you?" she managed, watching the floor, unable to look at Aislyn while she regained what shreds of composure she had left. Trusted with their lives. In all her turns, those were words Vinny had never heard. Sure, there was the implication while practicing her craft, but only out of the desperate need to survive. "This...this fardling mark..." she shook her head and dropped her arm to her side. Maybe if she didn't look at it, the brand would disappear.

"I won't change the way I work. Others will around me. They'll follow through behind me, double-check every detail and second-guess any emergency decisions I need to make," she tried to explain, tried to reason. Something pounded behind her eyes, so she lightly rubbed her temple and contemplated a wall, as if its sparse but warm decor could provide her with answers. "Murderer, traitor, whatever I am, I earned a brand, just like I earned my knots. But the others..."

This time, she finally got the courage to look back at the copperrider, her expression tired, angry, and scared all in a jumble. "I don't care what they call me, but I doubt I'll earn their trust," she chuckled wryly and without humor. She was still smirking, that grim smile that didn't touch her eyes. Something was nagging at her. Some key pieceof information she was missing. In a flash, it came to her. "Why do you even care? I'm not the first Healer to treat you or Roduth. There are other journeymen as skilled, masters more so. You can find another to keep you in one piece." But that wasn't all. Not quite. Vinny couldn't put her finger on the missing piece and hoped it didn't crawl back to bite her.

She probably knows that in her head but hasn't put words to it, Pileeth confirmed. Sort of. Yes, Vinny likely knew that Aislyn wouldn't drop this topic until Vinny either remained in Vaioa or left for Benden. And maybe not even after she'd left. I don't want to leave, Roduth. I have so many friends here.

"I can always kick their tailforks until they start believing?" It was only sort of a joke. The red head would be more than happy to beat up anyone who thought that the Healer was a murder. Stupid, blind people. Do I need to remind you about the breathing exercises?

Feck no. I don't need 'em. She cast a glance out to where the copper rested and gave him a mental eye roll. She wasn't that bad, just felt like giving people who deserved it a beating. Maybe she'd eventually beat the stupid out of them.

Yes, because that's how it works.

It seemed that the red head's outburst was helpful in the fact that she managed to wipe the humorless smile that had shown up on Vinsica's face. That and it looked like she had made the Healer speechless. Victory point for Aislyn!

At the question from the green, Roduth dropped his head down to his forearms. Of course it's true. He replied, nothing but honesty in his voice as he watched Pileeth. Mine has plenty of faith in yours. With healing, with our lives, with her friendship. Probably more things as well but they didn't need to know everything.

"No...I don't understand." Aislyn confirmed, agreeing because she honestly didn't understand how things were for Vinsica. She didn't have the mark, didn't have to worry about what other people thought about her. Well, that second part was mainly because she didn't give a feck about that. But she also never felt the need to run away, which regardless of what Vinny said, it's what Aislyn felt like she was doing. It must be hard, to carry that mark around and know what people would think if they saw it. That must be why she seemed to work so hard to keep people at a distance.

The next time she saw Vinsica's face it was full of expressions she hadn't seen from the other woman. That surprised her. And ugh, she did not like that smile she had on. Aislyn wanted it to be real, not something that only showed how upset she was. Too bad there wasn't a joke good enough to crack a real smile on the other woman's face. That's when Vinny asked the question that almost floored Aislyn. Why did she care? What, did she still not understand? "Why do I care? You think I'm worried about having a healer keep me and Roduth in one piece?" Another growl before she ran a hand through her hair. "You want to know why I care? Because whether ya like it or not, you're my friend. I care about you and I care about Pileeth. As does Roduth. We don't want to lose our friends." Was that so hard to see? Aislyn thought she'd been pretty obvious about it all.

Roduth let out a soft croon, attempting to offer some sort of comfort to the green. We don't want you to leave. Aislyn may not let it show but she would be very upset if you two did go. The copper stretched his neck out to lightly nose Pileeth's side. I'd miss getting to hear all about what's happening in the weyr that you tell me.
