Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Soreness thrummed in every inch of Aniese’s muscles, and it was a rueful grin that she wore as she dismounted from Rezeirth. “Remind me why that was a good idea, again?”

Because all riders need to stay fresh in their skills, Rezeirth recited sanctimoniously— using the exact wording Aniese had used to convince part of Coal and Flint wings to spar with the Amber riders.

Aniese rolled her eyes but with affection. “Oh, you.”

I’m just saying. You’ve got nobody to blame but yourself, Rezeirth replied smugly.

“I know, I know,” Aniese said with another eye roll. “Majestic Rezeirth is right once more. This was a horrible idea and I only have myself to blame.”

Oh, I don’t think it was a horrible idea. I never said that. Rezeirth chortled merrily. I just think you don’t have room to complain, since you’re the one who came up with it in the first place!

“Yes. Point taken. Jeez, Allie can really throw a punch.” Aniese groaned and tipped her head from side to side, trying to work the aches in her shoulders out (to no avail).

Why don’t you unstrap me, purred Rezeirth, so I can go gloat with Melacyth? Then you can nurse your wounds in the Lower Caverns with some wine. Or juice, she added brightly.

Aniese stuck her tongue out at Reze but unstrapped the Gold anyway. “Not my fault I’m a lightweight,” she murmured as Rezeirth gathered herself up in preparation to take off.

Oh, I know, Rezeirth said sweetly, before taking off with a gust.

Aniese sighed and turned toward her inner weyr. Rezeirth was right; some hot soup or a cold drink would make her feel better.

In the Lower Caverns, she was surprised to find Aerella sitting at one of the tables alone. She smiled and approached the Headwoman.

“Afternoon, Aerella,” she called. “How are you?”

Dearly Departed
There was always a burst of energy after hatchings, particularly successful ones like Cirseth's most recent. Agate class would have been enough to encourage the Weyr through the remainder of the lean winter, but that surprise to arrive during the feast had the rest of the Weyr in a tizzy. Even Aerella had caught the fever after her initial hesitance, hoping the dragonriders could figure out a way to get down there for foraging and hunting.

Much like a sugar rush, though, Aerella's enthusiasm had waned under the day-to-day grind of running the Lower Caverns and ensuring that life continued as normal for the Weyrfolk. Or...rather, as normal as possible given the drastic food shortage. It left her weary but not hopeless. To retain the rest of her sanity, Aerella had taken the rest of the afternoon off and left the running of the Weyr's domestic affairs to her assistants. Later in the afternoon, after the Weyrlings were finished with exercises and lessons, perhaps Aerella would pay a visit to her daughter. Until then, she had a few candlemarks to kill.

Mint adored the time off since it meant she got to spend more quality time with Aerella. The green firelizard hummed contentedly as her bonded oiled her shoulders and enjoyed every second of it. By the time she was finished, Aerella was far more relaxed, far more at ease, and ready for afternoon tea.

"Your usual, Headwoman?" one of the kitchen staff asked. Aerella looked around to spot the young man and smiled. "That would be lovely, Guyan. Extra hot if you don't mind." The young man nodded and retreated while Aerella found an unoccupied table. Mint hopped from her shoulder to the table and bumped under the woman's hand for attention. Aerella obliged while waiting for her tea.

She was still waiting when footsteps and movement drew her attention from Mint. Expecting Guyan, she was a touch surprised to see Aniese there instead. And...looking a little worse for wear but still smiling.

"I'm well, thank you," she responded with a graceful nod. Mint wasn't so practiced and simply trilled at the stranger. "Simply taking a mental health day. You're welcome to join me. I trust you've had an historic afternoon?" Just then, Guyan brought her tea and set the steeping cup in front of her before turning to Aniese.

"Can I get you anything, goldrider?" he asked with a half-bow.

“Mental health is important,” Aniese answered with a smile. “If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of the Weyr. At least, that’s what I’m beginning to realize myself,” she added with a small chuckle. Then, with an obliging nod, she slid into the seat opposite the headwoman.

“Historic is one way to describe it,” she said with a slight grimace. “I just had the brilliant idea to have some friendly sparring between Amber and some of the riders from Coal and Flint. I figured… in these times, every rider needs to be prepared… just in case. The way some of the Holds are acting…” She shrugged, frowning slightly. It was distasteful to even mention the escalating tension, but it was becoming a fact of life. “I don’t want any accidents,” she finished primly. “And I don’t think most of us in Amber get enough physical drills,” she finished.

When Guyan appeared with a steaming cup of tea and addressed her, she offered another friendly smile and nod. “Actually, I’ll have what she’s having,” Aniese said cheerfully. “Thanks.” A cup of hot tea would be just as good as soup and her muscles sure could use it. She already knew she’d be sore the next day, but she relished it. Since starting training with O’zen, Turns ago, she didn’t think she’d ever pushed herself like this. She really aught to start exercising again.

“How have you been faring? Things have certainly been rough lately. But the Hatching was a success, and we aren’t in the red yet.” Aniese offered a smile of grim satisfaction. “We’re always going to be able to scrape by. We’re tough.”
