Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Nothing as heavy and enormous as Aristoth should have been able to move with any sort of grace, but the big bronze settled to the ground with such ease that his glimmering sails barely raised half the cloud of dust the current batch of weyrlings did when they landed. Of course, he had turns of experience on the young ones; and they were all about functionality over grace at this point. They'd learn in time, especially the smaller ones.

"Think you can handle an afternoon without me?" R'ece asked as he slid down his dragon's neck.

The bronzerider was glad to have his feet on the ground again; he'd taken the short glide from their ledge to the bowl without straps and that was always a bit unnerving. Now he could look forward to an entire afternoon of helping move heavy boxes out of the lower caverns. He wasn't sure what sounded more unpleasant: dropping from his dragon's neck to his death or spending the day in the dank storage rooms.

I think I'll survive, Aristoth replied dryly.

The sun was warm today in between patches of heavy clouds. As long as it didn't rain, he'd be perfectly content to lay in the Weyrbowl - quite in everyone's way - and relax.

And do stop complaining. You promised that woman you're mooning after that you'd help. I won't allow you to back out because it's not fun!

The bronzerider winced. "I don't go back on my promises and you know it, wherrybait. Be good. Don't terrify any candidates." He shot a rueful glance toward the barracks, since Aristoth had so generously deposited himself just outside of them - again, in everyone's way - and then set off toward the caverns, trying not to look as defeated as he felt. That girl was rather pretty after all, and if doing some heavy lifting would gain her favor...

Remember that we have drills this evening!

R'ece groaned. He was going to regret everything about today.

With his rider effectively occupied for the rest of the afternoon, Aristoth settled in to watch the hustle and bustle of Vaioa. He much preferred to watch things from ground-level; from above everyone looked like tiny trundle bugs. On the ground, everything was far more intimate. He could hear conversations better and study the weyrfolk that hurried about their chores. R'ece might have nothing but tedium to look forward to, but his dragon had a long, interesting afternoon of people-watching ahead of him.

Syrah was enjoying a few free minutes outside, blinking in the sunlight in comparison to the Lower Caverns. If she saw one more broken dish or glass from the creche-brats, she'd scream too. Well, not literally, of course, but she certainly wanted to.

Not far off, she spied a large, handsome Bronze, apparently admiring the view from 'down here'. It stood to reason that she should get more comfortable with dragons, especially as she was going to Stand soon.

"Good morning, sir Bronze!' she called, aiming for formality as she'd always been taught to do. "A fine day, is it not?"

Aristoth could feel his rider's strain through their link, almost as if it were his own. His shoulders and back ached in sympathy but he shoved the feeling away firmly. He loved R'ece dearly but he'd made his bed here; he'd have to get over it. It wasn't like riding and caring for a bronze dragon wasn't equally hard work after all. Far more rewarding, but just as hard. He sent his rider a wave of encouragement and then became distant, too busy enjoying the sun and the weyrbowl to give his rider the pity he so desired.

A soft voice shattered his thoughts. Aristoth didn't quite jump but his sides twitched in surprise as if he'd been tickled. Slowly, his massive head swung about on a long neck and regarded the girl beneath him. He might have appeared lofty and arrogant were it not for the gentle twinkle of good nature in his bright green eyes. His body language was relaxed and not at all annoyed; although most dragons preferred not to acknowledge or converse with those that were not their riders, Aristoth was far more solicitous.

A gentle, gravelly voice filled her mind, curiously echoing in her skull as if it were a large empty cavern and not a human brain. Good morning, little one, he replied cheerily. His tail waved slowly, casually behind him, leaving snaketrails in the dust. You don't have work to do? My R'ece told me that being a candidate is very hard.

On second thought, she seemed older than he'd intially thought. It was hard to gauge these things without R'ece's insight. A teenaged human might appear to be an adult and an adult might appear to be a child. Meanwhile, a dragon's age was plain as day to him. Humans made little sense sometimes. He'd have to use more neutral language to avoid offending.

I am Aristoth. What's your name?

"My name is Syrah, Aristoth." Syrah said. "And yes, while I am busy, I do have some time before going back down to the lower caverns, and I would be honored if I might spend it with a lovely Bronze such as yourself. May I touch your nose? Your skin is so remarkably shiny yet soft-"

She extended a hand, not expecting to be allowed such an honor- but why not? He'd already been so allowing, why not this as well?

Maybe she was a child after all? Aristoth wondered if it was rude to ask. Over two decades and he still found himself questioning the reactions to humans that weren't R'ece or his daughters. He let his chin settle gently to the ground, putting him roughly eye to eye with her. Her face was reflected back at her a hundred thousand times in the gently glowing green facets of his eyes, startlingly alien and bizarre up close, like some kind of strange living jewel.

You can, he rumbled, a touch of amusement coloring his voice. But be careful. I'm delicate. I might shatter.

The faintest of sparks glowed in his mind, that tiny pulse of potential that he felt in all candidates he met. With most it was just that, potential. Occasionally it was a starburst that pulled at him, at many of the smaller dragons or anyone sensitive who knew what to look for. R'ece's daughter had been one such person. He doubted anyone had ever wanted to be a dragonrider more than that girl and just as well she'd Impressed on her first go or she would be been absolutely shattered.

My rider is in the lower caverns today. You might end up running into him. The poor man has been suckered into helping a young woman move supplies. He fancies her attentions but I'm not sure the feeling is mutual.

Syrah chuckled, an odd sound, as she ran her hand down Aristoth's nose. "You are a very handsome Bronze, sir," she said, thinking of a joke. "But Bronze doesn't shatter, it bends and dents."

She rolled her eyes, moving her hand up to caress Aristoth's eye ridges. "Yes, I am aware that R'ece has a girlfriend in the Lower Caverns. She hasn't shut up about how wonderful he is in days. Makes me happy to be a Candidate, no attachments."

Aristoth secretly had his doubts about that - drudges were notoriously wary and fickle - but tactfully kept from expressing them. R'ece was a wonderful man, and he did well by all his children despite living the busy life of a dragonrider, but he was also in many ways an irresponsible man who yearned to be otherwise...without it ever really working out.

It would be better perhaps if she were not so interested. I enjoy children, but we came to Vaioa to focus on work and allow his girls to be more independent. If he makes more, I will be quite cross with him, I think.

There was quite a bit of rebuke in his tone. R'ece historically preferred non-riders because, well, they tended to look at riders through rose-tinted goggles, especially if they rode bronze. Dragonriders were busy and had responsibilities. With a non-rider, he could almost have a normal relationship. Or a parody of one anyways. What it inevitably lead to was a nasty break-up - usually due to his busyness - and R'ece supporting a child as best he could when its mother could barely stand the sight of him.

The only attachment you should concern yourself with is that of Impression, Aristoth added approvingly. It is much more fulfilling than any twining of tails or giving of flowers.

"I can see why he would favor it, though," Syrah said, almost rebuking but not quite. "I had a….weyrmate. Once."

Avonn, poor Bitran, bled out on the patio floor, eyes staring up at her with a dull curiosity-

She gagged, jerking her hand off Aristoth's nose.

"I'm sorry, sir, I just-happened to recall him. Not a very nice person, really, now that I think of it. I thought we were in love, but it ended badly."

He was nice. Maybe a little too nice.

The girl made a noise usually reserved for extreme revulsion, flinching away from his nose and exuding near tangible emotional distress as she spoke of her ex-weyrmate. Aristoth moved a foot behind her to catch the woman if she fell but she steadied herself and seemed to shake off whatever had distressed her so. His gentle, reassuring thrum vibrated the ground around them, probably rattling her down to her bones but hopefully drowning out that upsetting memory.

Maybe you ought to adopt the dragon way of doing things, he mused softly, tail swaying lazily behind him. It lifted a small cloud of red dust that floated up and away from the pair. Concern yourself with the here and now only, form no lasting physical attachments and live your life as friend to everyone. I think humans make much of their misery from worrying too much of the future...or the past.

You are far too smug, R'ece's voice rang in his head. The bronze got a sense of deep tunnels and the smell of sweat and dust. What are you up to?

I'm just offering my advice to a friend. Go back to your work.

She wants to meet you when I'm done moving things for her. I think that's a marvelous idea. We could both use some fresh air.

Aristoth snorted and didn't dignify his rider with a reply. He wanted to show his dragon off, and rightly so, to woo the girl. He'd rather lay in the sun and talk with strangers than be gawked at so that R'ece might attract another mate. How tiresome.

"That is the best idea I've heard all day, Aristoth," Syrah said, returning her hand to his nose. "The sooner I forget about him, the more I can focus on what's really important, studying to become a dragonrider!"

She laughed then, tipping her head back in a full-out cackle.
"Aristoth, my good fellow...the present becomes the past as much as the future becomes the present! Days from now, years from now, it's all changing so rapidly you can barely understand it anyhow! If I worry about getting a dragon, that's counting fire lizards before they've hatched, and if I stay in the past I only think of my lost mate. You, beautiful sir, are a genius."

She kissed his nose then, softly, as though she was kissing a child, some delicate creature she dared not harm.
