Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aktero liked his solitude. He liked being alone with nothing else but Akterosk, with something to drink or to read or to simply think about. He hadn't always been like this. In his youth, Aktero was a social man. He was never particularly well-tempered, but he didn't mind people near as much as he's grown to.

In fact, he liked talking to others, even if it was merely to just exchange barbed words or to rant about the state of things. As he'd aged, the Bluehandler found value in silence. Why waste breath when what you thought about someone could be displayed easily with a simple look?

Akterosk didn't necessarily agree with his handler on this point. He remained, to this day, a very vocal wher. While even Aktero had his few exceptions in terms of people he could actually stand and maybe even like, Akterosk liked none - none save for his handler himself. The Blue had always had terrible manners about himself often snarling or growling at others.

When they were encountered by a particular passerby who lingered - a Bluehandler herself, it seemed, as she was followed by a beast of her own - the older wher snarled. He had been lying down, next to his handler who rested in a chair. But that soon changed as Akterosk slowly, threateningly rose.

It was not often Aktero reprimanded his wher. But he recognized this girl and hers. The wher had been badly injured in the conflict at Rubikon. So perhaps it was this that prompted Aktero to warningly exclaim, "Eh!" at the back of his Blue's head. He bore a look into the wher's head, looking to will him to calm.

With an angry and almost nasally huff at the other pair, Akterosk returned, with some difficulty, to sitting at his handler's feet.

Ara felt useless. Arask felt useless. They were both utterly useless until their wounds healed. The blonde woman wiggled the fingers of her right hand, hating the way the cast rubbed against her knuckles. It hampered any and all productivity. The sooner it's off, the better. Arask stiffly turned his head to fix her with an aggravated look. As he did so, his stitches stretched awkwardly, making his eyes twitch. A slight smile lifted the corners of Ara's mouth. "Sorry," she whispered. She was complaining too much, she knew. It's not like there's anything else we can do.

Girl. Stop. Arask entered the wherhandlers' commons right behind his handler, surveying the large underground room. He did not pay Atkero and Atkerosk much attention. Not at first. Old, allies, pack. Not a threat. Or so he had thought. His eyelids drooped--the only sign of his pleasure--when his Girl rested her good hand on his head and scratched between his headknobs. Better, Girl.

Before they could continue on their way to their quarters, Ara nodded to Atkero...and then Atkerosk snarled. That, and the older wher's standing, spurred Arask into action. In the blink of an eye, the blue turned from relatively placid to aggressively protective. With one wing, he pushed Ara back towards the nearest wall and stood between her and Atkerosk. His lips drew back over his fangs, and a guttural, rasping snarl ripped from his throat. It hurt his healing muscles. Fighting would surely hurt his healing muscles. But no one threatened his Girl. Stand down. Arask alpha to Atkerosk. Hurt Girl, Arask kill.

Arask! Ara's outward demeanor of professional coolness--necessary for the squad meeting that she and Arask had just returned from--was beginning to falter. She wasn't about to lose Arask to one of their troopmates. This was stupid. "Don't be a dimglow," she hissed, her left hand clenching around the shoulder of his wing. Stop it.

Arask narrowed his eyes, flexing his sharp-clawed toes. He continued to stare at Atkerosk, snarling and hissing, until the older wher sat down once more. Only then did he relax. Slightly. Her grip on his wing loosening, Ara subtly released her pent-up breath. "Atkero," she greeted the man, as calmly as she could. Her voice trembled slightly, something she detested.

The old wher licked his chops from his seat, still leveling cold eyes on the younger Blue. No one alpha to Akterosk. And that was all that he said. Though Akterosk's stature was wavering as he aged, his voice remained firm - gravelly and tough. He was sure to have been even more intimidating when he was younger, back when his form truly matched the intensity of his tone.

Aktero gave his wher a stern look. This was not allowed to escalate and he communicated that to Akterosk in a way that was both clear and threatening. Then, his gaze shifted to Ara. His eyes kept their sternness, his gaze meaningful as he nodded, accepting her greeting. "How are you and yours recovering?"

There was likely a more conversational way of having gone about asking such a question. But Aktero knew of Ara and her wher's whereabouts, so it was useless to ask such things or to say so just to get to the topic that he was able to with only one question.

The Bluepair was about simple and quick communication. Not lollygagging about. Not making friends. Not minding sensitivities. They would ask the questions and say the words they needed to, and rarely any more than that.

Arask returned Atkerosk's stare with burning heat to match the other blue's coldness. His tailtips lashed, and his claws scraping the stone floor. A soft hiss slipped from between his fangs. The fact that he was younger than the blue did enter his mind. Maybe a Turn ago, he would have submitted more readily. Now, though...now, he held himself proudly, arrogantly. He was alpha to Atkerosk, even if the blue was too fool to realize it. However, his Girl's fear was swelling in her mind, and he would not distress her. So, he let his posture do the talking for him. No fighting would be done, as long as the other wher kept his distance from Arask's Girl.

Thank you, Arask. Ara leaned back against the wall, her fingers stroking the tough skin of her wher's shoulder. She was grateful for Atkero, sure that he was contributing in his own way to stopping a fight from breaking out. The stern look he gave his wher was proof of that. His question helped her relax more, and she found herself growing slightly more comfortable. While she didn't know Atkero well, she had always appreciated his no-nonsense approach to conversation. "The healers have been extremely helpful, sir," she answered, respect in her tone. Unlike Arask, she saw value in deferring to elders. At least, not in a professional setting. Atkero was Turns and Turns wiser than she was. "We both expect to return to duty as soon as possible."

Should be sooner, Arask grumbled, using the clawed tip of his left wing to carefully scratch an itch on his neck, near his spine. The claw was not near any of his sutures, yet Ara automatically slapped it away from his neck. Oi!

Be more careful, she snapped back, glaring at him.

Akterosk kept his eyes on the other Blue. His gaze was still confrontational, still wary and hostile. But he had settled down enough to sit. That was going to have to be good enough for now. At his wher's thought of vague defiance, Aktero's focus switched back to him. The cold stare was leveled, once again, on the back of his head.

Akterosk do nothing, the Blue insisted. His mental voice was an infuriated and frustrated snarl. So long as little one do nothing first. Akterosk neither liked nor took lightly to being lorded over. He could still tell that this other wher felt superior to him. It tried his patience and resolve.

You will do nothing, period, thought Aktero, his gaze narrowing. He would not tolerate disobedience. If this younger wher were to start a fight, which Aktero doubted Ara would allow, they would be in trouble. Akterosk, in such a situation, should do nothing. Lest they be lumped together, in the end.

Akterosk growled. But his eyes were no longer on Arask's. This growl was meant solely for his handler. It meant irritation, and nothing more.

Asking for Akterosk not to fight back, were there to be a confrontation, was asking much. Too much. And Aktero knew that. His wher would absolutely defend himself were trouble to break loose. And, truthfully, he had no issue with that. One was allowed to defend one's self. But after voicing what he had and shielding these thoughts from his bonded, at least the Blue was now less likely to look for an opening and to instigate.

In answer to Ara's claim, Aktero nodded. "Good," he said. "The healers here at Vaioa have served Akterosk and I for many turns now. I expect nothing less from them."

Arask's yellowed eyes briefly left Atkerosk, only for a few seconds' time. His gaze fixed upon Atkero, watching the old man stare at his wher. The sight made him tense, as he looked back at the other blue. Why did the old man look unhappy? Was Atkerosk planning something bad? Girl. Arask want leave. There was a reason Arask chose to avoid the company of others, Hamask and her girl excepted. Other whers were threats to his Girl. Humans were plain annoying.

Ara patted her bonded in a manner meant to be calming. She, too, had her concerns, but she trusted Atkero. Just as she would not let Arask start anything, she knew that Atkero would not let Atkerosk do so. Still, when the old blue growled, she frowned and tensed as much as Arask did. Easy, she warned Arask. He had not gotten into a serious fight with a troop member...ever. She was not about to let the first time occur today. Atkerosk is pack. Don't make me make you apologize for being condescending.

Arask turned his glare to his Girl, his voice incredulous. Arask no apologize! Atkerosk rude first! Arask Third!

Ara's reply was firm. You are still to be polite. Arask huffed, narrowing his eyes and looking away with a sharp jerk of his head. Ara took a step forward, so that she could drape her near arm over his shoulders. More incentive for him to stand still. "They are very skilled," she said to Atkero, the corners of her lips lifting ever so slightly as she thought of Hama. Very skilled. Pausing for a moment, she studied Atkero's face. "May I ask you a question, Atkero?"

Akterosk remained facing away from the group, seeming content to just ignore the world right now. He had been embarrassed by his handler and had to set aside his pride. The Blue was much more happy to sink into daydreams than to stay a part of the current conversation.

Aktero, however, could sense Ara and Arask's apprehension. The thought occurred to him to have Akterosk speak for himself and promise to remain docile. But a glance at his old friend told him that the wher had had all the scolding he would take for some time. So, instead, it was the Bluehandler who spoke. "Akterosk will not disobey my orders."

The words probably would've been more comforting had the other Bluepair actually heard Aktero give said orders. Still, that reassurance was going to have to do, because neither wher nor man would say anything more on the subject.

There was something deeper to what Ara said about the Healers. Aktero's heavy, old brows knit together in suspicion, and his eyes narrowed, curiously. But he said nothing. Asked nothing. It was not his place, and surely not any of his business.

At her question, though Aktero's expression remained the same, he gave a single nod and an affirming grunt. He would answer whatever Ara had to ask. So long as it was not too personal.

Ara wasn't sure what to say to Atkero, in response to his reassurance. While she was grateful, it irked her that she and Arask had clearly been so easy to read. What's happened to us? As a woman who relied so heavily on masks to disguise her feelings and thoughts, it disturbed her to have been so transparent. She merely nodded to Atkero, as a result. Arask ignored the man entirely, remaining vigilant. He would not let his guard down, even if his Girl did. Atkerosk was an ally, but even allies could turn on one another.

He's not going to attack, Ara told him, rationality overtaking her own former concerns. She no longer feared that a fight would break out. Vaioan whers were disciplined and well-trained. Even Kask and Varuesk controlled themselves to some degree. Arask and Atkerosk could do so as well.

Girl fool. Arask save from self. Arask stared at the wall, his senses of smell and hearing focused still on Atkerosk. He huffed when Ara lightly smacked his shoulder, but sensed the affection behind it. Turning his head, he nipped at her hand, teeth leaving shallow indentations in her flesh. It was a testament of his self-control that he did not break skin. Ara winced, but almost smiled.

In that moment, she had missed Atkero's curious expression, and was saved from a blushing episode. When she looked back at the man, it was to see him nod and grunt. Giving her permission to ask away. She took her time formulating the question, finally settling for a simple, "What made you decide to join the Troop as fighters?" The Troop had only been around for a short while. Surely, he had already been an older man when it had been formed. Why had he decided to take such a risk?

Ara had been comforted by Aktero's reassurance. This, he saw. But Arask remained diligent and on alert. Aktero's stern gaze now turned to him. It was an insulting gesture. To think that Akterosk could not hold his restraint, when he'd passed the young Blue by so many turns. And then, also to Aktero himself. To think that he, a wherhandler with so many years of experience would not be able to manage his own wher's temper.

Whers were often simple creatures and they didn't think in this way. Aktero knew that. In any other situation, he'd be scolding someone for taking such a thing so seriously. But at the same time, with him in this position, it was he who was taking offense. Though it was mainly offense taken for Akterosk's sake.

No pay attention to blue little one, said Akterosk, from where he lay on the ground. He kept his gaze away from the group, but clearly had kept an ear out for things. He stupid.

He's cautious, corrected Aktero. It was a needless effort, for sure, but Aktero would not go so far as to call the other stupid. That was something that the Blue did not seem. Take from your own well. Pay no attention and go to sleep.

No. Stay wake. Could be trouble.

The only trouble would be the type you cause, so there'll be none. Akterosk grumbled in response to this. But the old man paid it no heed, and he lifted his head to Ara's question. "It seemed like our place," he said, simply.

But this was not a time to speak simply. Even if he did not wish to divulge much about himself, at least something more was needed. He had to elaborate. "I have explored many trades during my life. When I met Akterosk, we became involved in mining. The wher troop had yet to be formed. When it had-" Aktero gave a nod. "-We realized that was where we were always meant to be. Felt like we were finally making some sort of difference."

Arask felt the eyes on him. He slowly turned his head, fixing his ruby-orange gaze on Atkero. He held the man's eyes for a brief moment, before slowly tearing his own away. His Girl's hand on him reassured him, calmed him. He would not cause trouble. Dropping his haunches, sitting down and allowing his head to droop forward. Relaxing his posture, for all that their company could tell. Still vigilant, but less threatening. Girl happy now?

Very. Thank you.

Ara frowned at Atkero's initially-short answer. It seemed like our place. Such a simple answer. She did not quite understand it. Everyone had reasons behind every action. She had joined the Troop for revenge, in hopes of finding her father's killer. Others had their own personal reasons. But "just because it seemed like our place" did not seem like a valid one. And then Atkero continued. Making a difference. That was a reason she could understand. Bowing her head, Ara accepted that answer. "Thank you for answering. And for your service."
