Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was early afternoon - not too long after lunch - and it was Zorog's afternoon to be off chores. Whereas others in his situation might be out socializing in the Weyr or doing some other fun activity, Zorog cooped himself up in the Candidate barracks. It had been a while since he had gotten some down time to practice playing his lute - a gift from his mentor - so he was going to take full advantage of it. His room felt a little too cramped for his liking that day, so he made his way into the common room - which seemed rather empty for now, which relieved him - and started to play.

"Fardles, no... no... wait... " Zorog muttered under his breath as his fingers were slow to warm up to the necessary technique required to play the song he wanted to play. Eventually, his fingers found their stride, and he was able to play a simple song, one of the very first he had learned. The familiar sound was enough to make him yearn for the Journeyman Harper who he had grown very close to, seemingly the only man who cared about him at all at the Hold.

He sighed as the song completed.

"Wow, I didn't know you could play the lute, little bro!"

Spooked, Zorog jumped from his seat and toppled upon landing, nearly falling on his face but holding his playing arm away so the lute didn't take any damage. "Br-Bronnia! You s-s-s-scared me!" The girl giggled, and offered an arm up.

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," she said, "but you're actually pretty decent! How did I not know this before?"

Zorog blushed, and stammered, "N-n-not that g-good." He fell silent, nervous that perhaps other people had heard his playing, and not just his sister and himself.

"You give yourself too little credit. Also, you need to relax!" Bronnia sat right next to him and put a hand on his shoulder, frowning when the younger boy briefly shrank away from the touch. Man, he's really had it tough, Bronnia reminded herself.

"S-sorry."

Fixing Lessal's glasses was going nowhere. One of Demos' bully-boys had taken a fancy to them, and now they were completely beyond repair. The main damage was to the earpieces, which were bent as to be almost bro-

Zara, suddenly distracted, broke away from her Boy and began to sing!
Sing?
Now, Lessal realized, there was music coming from the Common Room. Really beautiful, and Zara liked it too. He hummed along with the tune for a few bars, then heard it break off. What had it been? More importantly, WHO had it been?

"Exc-c-cuse m-m-me?" he asked, poking his head into the room. "Was that you, playing j-just now?"

Living in the Candidate Barracks was...different. It reminded Rae of living in the apprentice dorms at the Hall. She had more privacy here, though, so perhaps closer to the journeymen apartments. There was a second bed in her room, suggesting that she could get a roommate in the future should more girls be Searched, but for now she had the room to herself. It made Jay and Trill very happy. They nested wherever they pleased, and Rae had plenty of room to spread out. This really was one of the largest living spaces she'd had all to herself.

Except it was the farthest room in her hall from the lounge. Keeping a Harper so far from the pulse of the Barracks was almost cruel!

Good thing music could penetrate even that far back.

Rae raised her head from her studies when the delicate strains from a stringed instrument reached her ears. Someone's fingers were out of practice, from the sounds of it. The notes were too mellow for a guitar, didn't hold that instruments characteristic twang. Yet it was also lighter, not quite as resonant as a cello or plucked violin... Could it be a lute? It had been turns since Rae had last heard one. They were difficult to craft and temperamental to maintain. She smiled as the player gained confidence in their melody and even hummed along to the familiar tune.

Jay joined her as she headed out to see who was performing, and the blue whistled happily. Hmm perhaps Rae should have brought one of her own instruments with her. Spontaneous duets were her favorite kinds of duets. She leaned on the frame of the hallway entrance. The three in the lounge were younger than she'd expected--and reminded her that she was close to the maximum age for Candidacy--and yes, one of them had a lute.

"Glad I'm not the only musician in the Barracks," she offered with a grin, Jay giving a reaffirming chirp. "How long have you been playing?"

There was not a lot of free time. She could spin and embroider, but much more than that was beyond her time or space resources. Perhaps she could have brought a lap loom, but even that would get no more than a line or two a day as tired as she felt at end of each.

Kamene was slightly jealous of those who were Healers or Harpers, it seemed easier for them to make time, or to pull related chores, but she knew that wasn't fair. She'd made her choice.

And she did love music, so she stilled the drop spindle, bringing it with her as she followed the music to its source in the common room. Kamene smiled to the others who had come, not pushing her way through. She did not need to make herself known, just to find a spot to sit and spin and listen.

To pretend for a moment she was at home, working fiber with her father while her mother and brother sang. "It's pretty. I...umm...hope you don't mind an audience."

When Lessal poked his head into the room, Zorog jumped again, startled. "Umumum... y-yes?" The nervous boy responded, clutching his lute a little more closely to him, as if trying to draw some sense of relief from it.

"It totally was him!" Bronnia chimed in cheerily, prompting Zorog to look away from both his sister and Lessal. Of course, his eyes landed on a woman - certainly much older than him, his sister, and Lessal - as she, too, heard his playing and asked him a question. Zorog was beet red by now, unsure of what to think of the compliments. "Um, w-well... bou' three t-t-turns, I g-guess."

Bronnia patted her timid little brother on the shoulder gently. "You're very good for only that much experience. You must have had a great teacher!"

Zorog brightened ever so slightly. "I really d-did."

Another young woman joined the gathering crowd, and Zorog blushed further, looking down at the lute he clutched tightly. Bronnia said, "I think they want to hear you play more."

Zorog balked. "I've n-n-never played f-for p-people before! I'm... n-nervous!"

Bronnia rubbed his shoulder gently, trying to relax him some. "You're good, though! You can do it!"

The scrawny boy frowned thoughtfully, but he eventually managed to look at his spectators again. Trying to find some sense of serenity and confidence - they were all wowed by his playing, after all - he took a deep breath and started to play again, a slightly more complex song than the first. He paused after a screwed up a note about a half-minute in, and it took another deep breath and more gentle encouragement from Bronnia for him to continue.

Maybe this isn't so bad, after all... Zorog thought to himself as he regained his rhythm. So entranced by his own performance he had become, he was able to partially tune out the room around him, to almost forget the fact that he had people watching him.

In fact, when the song finished, he looked stunned that there were still people around. "W-was that g-good?"

"It was-s p-p-perfect." Lessal said quietly, stammer obvious as ever. Zara let out an encouraging trill. Oh, she wanted to hear more music!

"C-c-can I s-sing?" Lessal asked, edging ever so slightly closer. He wasn't scared of this boy, not like he was scared of most males. He wanted to be friends. Yes, him and Zara would be excellent friends. If this boy would sing more, that would be so wonderful-

He sat down, shoulders back and ready to add his slightly off tenor to the music around him.

The boy with the lute was attracting a bit of an audience. Even those who didn't stay to listen passed through whispering to themselves as they went. Rae appreciated their courtesy to not disturb the young Harper. Only three turns, huh? Rae remembered her skill at three turns and it was not a fond memory. Still, she grinned at it and continued to smile when the others in the room encouraged the boy to continue.

"Now's as good a time as any to practice performing," she lightly added her own voice. Though she took great pleasure in performing, Rae understood that not every Harper was destined to be center stage. Some preferred to be background musicians while others had strengths in the more political side of the craft. Rae's forte happened to be on the musical and teaching end, so she leaned against the hallway entrance and listened to the more complicated melody that came from the boy's fingers.

She found herself nodding along in time, even her toe tapping slightly. Jay crooned a single-note harmony that was sorely out of key for the majority of the piece. At least the blue could whistle a melody on key and pitch but he was horrendous at harmonizing. When the boy finished his piece and looked for affirmation, Rae clapped softly. She might have a decade or there abouts of practice and experience on these boys, but she remembered what it was like being a young, impressionable student of music.

"Looks like we got a concert about to start," she commented idly, stepping into the room and finding her own chair. She'd let the boy take the lead in the music. Her singing voice wasn't Hall performance standard anyway, but it was still fun to join in. If they needed an alto harmony, she could add it. "What's your next piece, maestro?"

Despite the compliments from his audience, Zorog still couldn’t quite shake off the nervous feeling of inadequacy. However, they were starting to fade as he realized that others were enjoying his playing. He was making others happy just by playing his lute! How wonderful! He started to smile rather widely.

Bronnia patted her little brother’s shoulder as she realized he was finally taking heed of the compliments. “See, what’d I say? You give yourself too little credit.”

Zorog gave a great big smile back up at his big sister, his eyes shining with new excitement. “Y-yeah, I guess you were r-right!” He turned back to his audience, to Lessal, Rae, and Kamene, his leg briefly jittering with energy before he was able to still it again. “I think… I think w-with the h-hatching so s-soon, I w-would play the Golden Egg of Faranth.” It was a simpler song that many knew, but if he was going to have his audience singing along with him, well, it was best to use a song that many knew!

“I’ll sing too!” Bronnia chimed in, so happy that her little brother was finding some sort of confidence. She had felt so bad for the little brother she had only just been reunited with last Turn, how broken he had seemed and how little faith he had had in himself and his abilities. It was nice to see him like this.

Zorog took a deep breath to calm his nerves, and started playing once again.

"Golden Egg of Faranth". Gulp. Not exactly his favorite, but Zara, ever ready, hummed a pitch from his shoulder and Lessal felt his own throat mimicking the sound.
Chin up, shoulders back, breathe in, and think of dragons.

"By the Golden Egg of Faranth
By the Weyrwoman, wise and true
Breed a flight of bronze and brown wings
Breed a flight of green and blue.
Breed riders, strong and daring
Dragon-loving, born as hatched-"

He slid into a ritard, letting Zara lead; wondering if Zorog had any surprises up his sleeve for the final lines.
