Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

J'zec wasn't sure at what point his thoughts had derailed from asking someone for advice with the proper experience, such as another wingsecond or even a wingleader, and turned instead to thoughts of a very angry copperrider that seemed to give off an aura of extreme hatred every time she saw him. Why he had thought it was a good idea to ask her, a mere wingthird (these were, of course, Riliath's thoughts), for tips on leading a wing, he had no idea. Maybe he thought it was time they had an actual, adult conversation. Maybe he actually missed spending time with her.

Or maybe he just really liked pissing her off.

Whatever the reason, he found himself outside her door feeling oddly... hesitant. It had only been maybe five minutes he'd been standing there, staring at the closed door like it was the greatest challenge he had ever faced. He'd achieved journeyman harper status, left his life completely behind to become a dragonrider, left the Weyr he'd come to call home, and risen to Wingsecond status within a turn at Vaioa, and yet somehow... Approaching Reesa in a private environment where she could actually murder him felt harder.

He stifled a grimace, glancing sidelong as Liet churred on his shoulder and rubbed his knobby head against his human's ear. The copperrider grunted. He hadn't wanted the small creature to begin with, but as far as the pests went, Liet was fairly decent. He was quiet, calm, and seemed to know the best ways to comfort his human.

"Okay. Here goes."

Raising his hand, J'zec stalled again, and it was only when his arm started to tire that he finally rapped his knuckles against the door. He was prepared for the friendly expression to morph to outright irritation. Even more prepared for the door being slammed in his face, which is why he stuck his foot in the way. The faint crunch against his boot made him wince internally, but he kept his expression neutral. No smirk or taunting grin this time.

"Wait, Reesa. I'm not here to antagonize you or anything. I wanted-" How did he phrase this?

Stop being stupid. We can find someone worthy to direct you, Riliath huffed. While he liked Jaldaeth quite a bit, he was not a fan of the rider. Reesa was rude to His for no good reason.

Suppressing a sigh, J'zec flicked his gaze to the ground and then back up to meet Reesa's glare. "I swear on Riliath, I'm not going to cause problems." He paused, dredging up the words he never thought he'd speak to her. "I came to ask your advice."

She really needed to learn to ask 'who is it' before opening the fecking door. But she never had problems with guests. In fact, she enjoyed visitors - not that she got them too often. Sometimes it'd be someone from the Wing with a question or sometimes it'd be Tenn. Whoever it was, it was rare that Reesa had a problem with it.

Except now. Except him.

Surely she had something inside the weyr that she could use to push his foot out of the way. Issuing J'zec another unimpressed look, disbelieving his statement that he came in peace, she took to looking about the space for such an object.

Reesa. Jaldaeth tried for an attempt to grab his rider's attention. He knew that Reesa was now only half-listening to what J'zec continued on to say, focusing more on finding a way to get out of the situation altogether. She had missed his sincerity. And if she hadn't, she had passed over it too readily. Distrust and wariness got the better of her.

There was a broom that she could use but it was too far away. Shaffit. She would have to come up with another plan then.

Reesa. That had done it. Her head snapped to Jaldaeth instinctively. Though, immediately, she twitched, nearly turning back to the other Copperrider. Instinct also told her to keep an eye on him. But Jaldaeth had gotten her focus and that was all that mattered. Perhaps the better plan would be to actually listen to him and respond.

There's no point, thought Reesa, turning back to J'zec with her eyes narrowed and her lips pursed. He's here because he's working some sort of angle.

The angle seems to be to ask your advice. He is giving you dominance over the situation.

Her palm tensed on the doorknob, squeezing it tighter. If he was doing that, then he'd let me close my door.

He seems somewhat desperate.

This gave Reesa pause. Did he?

Something definitely seemed...different about how he was presenting himself. Her face relaxed, thoughtfulness dawning on it, the glare wiped away. She looked him over. J'zec certainly wasn't holding himself quite like he normally did. There was no smug smirk. Nothing about his stance particularly rang with overconfidence at the moment. ...But what if it was a trick.

Reesa, he's sworn on his dragon. The distrustfulness rolled off of Reesa in waves. But more than that and loathing, Jaldaeth sensed something else from his rider. Fear at, perhaps, being taken advantage of. Reesa was typically quick to forgive, quick to give others another chance. But things with J'zec seemed to run deeper than that. It was as if she couldn't afford to default to her normal demeanor. I'm right here, the Copper reassured.

She nearly turned back to the dragon, then, but she resisted. I'm not scared.

I know you aren't, said Jaldaeth. But if you won't believe him, then believe me when I say that he will do nothing. He will not get the chance. I am here, and I will not let any harm - any at all - come to you.

Her teeth were clenched and her breaths were heavy. As if she was standing on some ledge and not simply at her own door. Momentarily, the thoughtful look melted into one of surrender. And she threw open the door. "What are you talking about?" Her guarded look was quick to return.

J'zec had anticipated each of the expressions he saw cross Reesa's face. There was even one point when she shot him an unimpressed face that reminded him suddenly of Elmi, and he nearly pulled away in response. But he held fast, determined to stick this out because he knew how her wing felt about her. She was good at her job, so she was the perfect candidate to coach him on this... social thing.

He started to reconsider when he saw her casting around for something. Was she looking for a weapon? Something to beat him with? His expression shifted toward wary and, again, he almost withdrew his foot. Her reaction told him Jaldaeth had gotten himself involved, and he knew the copper wasn't his biggest fan. Might as well give this up for a lost cause.

But... was that thoughtfulness on Reesa's face? Was she considering what he'd said?

J'zec lingered, letting her ride out whatever thoughts and mental conversation she was having. It was only when her expression flickered yet again, toward a wariness that spoke of a reluctance to be hurt that he stepped back. She opened her door and spoke for the first time, but there was something in her demeanor... Did his presence alone cause her anxiety? Even when he would never, could never hurt her?

His mouth pressed into a line and he shook his head. "Forget it. I'll find someone else," he muttered, turning away to head back to his room. It had been a stupid idea anyway.

Stop.

Leave off. You got your wish. I'll ask someone more qualified.

No. She can't act like that to you. You haven't done anything wrong, Riliath insisted, his anger pulsing hot through J'zec.

It doesn't matter!

Yes it does! Turn around and face her!

Snarling slightly, J'zec whirled around, eyes narrowed in irritation. "What is it about me that you despise so much?" he demanded, clenching his hands. It wasn't a good idea to have this conversation in a public space, especially where his voice had risen an octave above usual, but Riliath's fury was stealing away his reason. "I came here asking for advice, because I know you're good at your job, and you act like that!" He gestured at her posture, her tight grip on her door. "What the fardle did I ever do to you that was so horrible?"

Tension immediately left Reesa as J'zec turned around and began walking away. Her grip on the door slackened. She slouched. Her relief was only matched by her confusion. Why was he leaving? If J'zec was not joyful to get a rise out of her, she would've expected him to be apathetic. Instead, he seemed defeated. She watched his retreat with a tilted head.

I believe you may have hurt him. It seemed likely to the Copper at least, with the man's complete surrender of the doorframe and the look he'd taken on before leaving. It was only a subtle change, but it had been enough.

Reesa whirled to face Jaldaeth out of pure shock. I hurt him? How could she have hurt him? In their entire history together, she could not find a single moment within which she could have actually hurt him.

Jaldaeth could actually name several, even whilst beholden of the bias of only being able to see that far back from Reesa's point of view. But he didn't get a chance to say this because- Oh, he's coming back.

This took Reesa by surprise, and she turned around to face the outside corridor.

...He suddenly looks quite angry.

Literally taken aback by the intensity of J'zec's words, something about them and his change in demeanor caused a shift in Reesa. She seemed to stand taller. She crossed her arms over her chest and held her head high. And most importantly, she came completely away from the door's protection, now taking to stand in front of it. Though she took time to answer, there was no shred of weakness or fear in her now. Giving a tilt of her head, her brows knit together, and her eyes narrowed. "Those are some loaded questions you're asking there."

Without taking her glaring eyes off of him, she backed up, pushing the door fully open behind her, so now nothing separated her weyr from the hall. Jaldaeth was even visible, now, from where he sat on his couch, listening and watching the conversation transpire. At the creak of the door woke the large blue fire lizard that rested on her bed spread. Cascade, too, sat up then, and tilted his head - in a way much unlike his bonded had - at the scene taking place outside.

"Why don't you get in here and ask the ones you came here to ask first?" Her tone was none too cheerful, but likewise, it was no longer defensive. "Or leave if you want to. I really don't care. But please make some sort of decision."

Ah, yes, righteous anger came much easier than anything else. And Jaldaeth knew that. Which was why his expression sank the moment Reesa was presented with the opportunity to retort. What had made J'zec grow so angry all of a sudden?

In a moment the answer hit him. Riliath. The Copper let out a long, deep breath. His brother was prideful. And easily offended. If J'zec were in an emotionally compromised state, it would be easy for Riliath's rage to become his own.

For the moment, he would just continue to watch. But his gaze was careful and calculating. If things got out of hand, Jaldaeth would be ready to step in.

"Those are some loaded questions you're asking there."

The words caused J'zec to flinch unbidden. She didn't deny she despises me. Of course he'd known she didn't particularly like him, but to think she actually hated him? He almost turned away again, almost gave this whole thing up and resolved never to speak to her again. But she had pushed her door open and told him to enter her room, which contradicted her words a little. Had he finally hit a nerve that would actually get her to talk to him?

She is not worth your time. Leave, Riliath snorted angrily.

The irony was not lost on J'zec. He almost smiled wryly, but he couldn't seem to get his face to work. It was fixed in an expression of stony indifference. You're the one that told me to face her. Now you want me to leave? Make up your mind.

Leave.

The copper's words made J'zec take a step. And then another. Before he knew it, he had entered Reesa's weyr (a first for him, but he didn't take the time to examine it) and turned to face her. She didn't seem to want to answer the question of why she hated him. His expression tightened further and his jaw was beginning to ache from clenching it, but he held it all back.

"I've been promoted to Wingsecond," he said flatly. No cause for celebration or pride, not here with the woman that couldn't stand him. "Our Wingleader is bedridden, so I've been leading the wing. You're a 'Third, so I thought I could ask you advice on... leadership." The words tasted like ash on his tongue now.

Liet chirped meekly from his shoulder, curling his tail around his human's neck and tilting his head at Reesa. J'zec raised a hand reflexively to the bronze, rubbing his fingers over the tiny headknobs. He'd forgotten all about his passenger. This entire situation had him thrown off, enough that he offered an explanation without even knowing why he did. "This is Liet. Accidentally Impressed him a while ago."

Reesa's brows furrowed. Had her response actually come as a surprise to him?

More than that, I think you may have wounded him, noted Jaldaeth. He didn't seem to expect that you actually despise him.

How could he not? thought Reesa, baffled. He's spent years working towards that exact goal.

After a moment, as J'zec went on speaking, Jaldaeth said, Perhaps not, in his eyes. Could that have been at all possible?

Reesa answered the Copper's unspoken question with a flat, dull, No.

She kept her eyes on J'zec as he stepped inside and then closed the door behind him. Her weyr was quite modest. There wasn't a lot of furniture. It had all of the essentials, of course, but not much in the way of extras. J'zec was gestured to a lone chair as Reesa took a seat on the edge of her bed.

He was made Wingsecond? He was made Wingsecond? She felt her eyes narrow. Not only did he now outrank her, but someone had seen fit to put him in a position of such importance? What?

Jaldaeth could tell that Reesa was only thinking with the grudge she held against the other Copperrider. No matter what J'zec was like in terms of personal relations, that didn't necessarily affect any sort of prowess for leadership. Still, Jaldaeth made a note of the man's quandary, of his disposition. Strangely, I don't think his thoughts are so out of line from your own on this.

Reesa blinked, the haze of her anger lifting slightly at her dragon's words. She turned back to glance quickly at the massive wedge-shaped head that stared back at her. Then she returned to facing J'zec, her expression less stern and tinged with curiosity, confusion.

At the introduction of the fire lizard, Liet, Cascade gave his own chirp. Of course Liet's was meant for his bonded rather than the Blue on the bed, but Cascade never passed up the chance to meet new friends. Reesa looked to Casc briefly, resting a hand on his head and administering affectionate pets.

The fire lizard rumbled a purr and leaned into her palm. But he kept his eyes on the Bronze. He was still interested in meeting this Liet.

"This is Cascade," said Reesa, gesturing to the friendly Blue with a tilt of her head. "And you already know Jaldaeth. He's back there." Another gesture.

Hello again, J'zec. Though the Copper's impression of the guest who stood in their weyr wasn't incredibly favorable, his tone was not impolite. He already received enough briskness from Reesa. There was no need for Jaldaeth to add to it.

Speaking of said briskness, it had been strangely absent from her words the last time she'd spoken. And when Reesa went to speak again, this time on the subject at hand, much of the venom was lost from her voice. "Our jobs are kind of different. We serve different purposes to the Wing. So I don't know how much I can actually tell you. But-" She shrugged. "-okay."

Her stature was more relaxed. She seemed less angry, but still confident. Whether one of her companions was aiding in this switch by sending energies her way was unsure. But what was certain was that her disposition had changed and she was willing to try and help.
