Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The barracks were not quite what he'd expected. Barrez had envisioned individual rooms with proper big beds and private bathing areas for each candidate. What he found when he shuffled down the hall to the room the candidate master had told him was his was a set up not much different from what he'd had in the crèche. Small rooms with two moderately sized cots, a chest for storage, and a large bathing room for all the boys to share. There was a small room with a privy at the end of each hallway and a large common room with several couches that looked far more comfortable than anything he'd ever slept on.

At least I get this room to myself for now, he thought with a bit of a smile. He wouldn't be sharing a room with three other boys. The sound of crying infants would not wake him periodically in the night and he would not be expected to help feed the younger children twice daily. Instead, he'd been presented with a list of proper adult chores that needed doing. How these tasks were supposed to help him attract a dragon, Bez had no idea, but it was better than the fardling crèche. Anything was better than there.

Best of all, the barracks were positively teaming with fire lizards. Almost every candidate had one, a fact that made his stomach churn in jealousy and excitement. If there was a queen or a moderately responsible green among these, perhaps he could find a way to get an egg for himself for once. Bez had often - loudly - wished for a fire lizard of his very own and been shouted down by his superiors. There were plenty of opportunities in the dining hall but he wasn't strong enough to push his way to the front and he'd been held back from trying. Children couldn't care for something like a fire lizard, he'd been told. He'd have to wait until he was older.

Well now he was a candidate. Properly Searched and all! And if he wanted a lizard, he'd get a bloody lizard.

It didn't take long to settle in; his bag of belongings was merely some sandals, an extra change of clothes, and a few small trinkets he'd acquired over the last few turns. His stash of sweets had been confiscated right away but he could easily build up a new one. Weekly room sweeps were apparently a thing, but Bez was willing to bet the candidate masters didn't regularly check under the mattress on the cots, so he'd be just fine.

He left his room behind with a smile and wandered out into the commons, flopping dramatically onto one of the plush couches. The rooms might not be what he imagined, but he was here, he was a candidate, and his dragon was just around the corner, waiting for him on those sands under Cirseth's protection. Vaioa's newest candidate closed his eyes and let a blissful smile spread across his face. Now all he had to do was wait.

Kamene came in from chores, trying really hard not to mourn how rough her hands were already becoming after just a few weeks at the weyr with chores, lotion not enough to cancel out the the effects of the kind of work that chores they did here and lessons, particularly self defense lessons, She could not even imagine trying to weave even a simple broad cloth without snagging the fibers on her hands. Oh well, a dragon would be worth it, and if she didn't impress, that would just be another step in returning to Weaver Hall.

Life was definitely different at the weyr, but she had been here long enough that she needed to at least start to adjust and make her life here. Though how vastly different it was was a challenge. Not having a private room, not having any time to pursue her own interests, same sex couples not having to hide while desperately hoping that no one ever found out. Ok, perhaps not all the differences were bad.

She smiled, distracted from the thought of her hands as she imagined somehow, even with all the time constraints, finding a girl friend and not being a dirty little secret. What would that even be like?

Shaking herself out of that pleasant thought, Kamene noticed a kid sprawled in one of the chairs in the common room. He looked so happy and peaceful that she was not certain whether or not to disturb him. Deciding that if he wanted to be left alone he'd be in his bunk, maybe, she approached. "Hi. Um, welcome to Candidate-ness. I'm Kamene." She was new herself, but had not seen him before and he looked so young! But still, she could say hi and welcome him. There was no harm in that.

Barrez cracked an eye open, turning the full force of his gap-toothed smile on the unfamiliar woman that loomed above him. She seemed more of a woman than a girl, but then most candidates were. Vaioan Weyrleaders had a long tradition of preferring older candidates to vulnerable weyrbrats, and most of his fellows would probably wait until they were fourteen or fifteen to try their luck.

Bez intended to Impress on his first try if he could help it and prove that he was every bit as good as the adults. Let that show everyone back in the crèche who thought he wasn't even mature enough to handle a fire lizard. He couldn't wait to rub his dragon in their faces.

"Thanks, miss. It's long overdue. I wish they woulda let me stand turns ago. I'm Barrez. Most folks call me Bez."

He rolled his legs off the couch to make room if she wanted to sit and swung his feet. They didn't quite touch the floor. "Are you as ready for a dragon as I am? Girls all want golds n' garnets right? That seems like way too much work to me. Weyrsinger told me that weyrwomen spend all their time reading and makin' lists."

He made a face at that. "Bleh. Boring."

Kamene's smile broadened as she took the offered seat. "It's nice to meet you, Bez, though I think since we're both Candidates, I don't qualify as a 'miss' anymore. Just a Kamene, or Kam, if you like." Sure he was a kid and she was an adult, that didn't mean that she outranked him, though, and she'd never been really comfortable having honorifics used to describe her.

"Long overdue, huh? When did you want to start standing?" She was not weyrbred, so she was sure she could not fully understand his anxiousness, but at the same time she remembered how impatient she had been to be an official apprentice at Weavers', so perhaps she could understand.

"Um...I don't know. All of this is still so new to me. I'm still learning the Weyr and how things work here. It's very different from either the Hall or Holds." Kamene's smile did not falter as she answered, "Though some of the differences are very good, so that's not complaining. But even I know that it's ok if a Dragon doesn't choose me the first time." She shrugged lightly, the truth was it might be better for a Dragon if she had a bit more experience at the weyr before Impressing, but that'd be up to the Dragnets. "I think I'd like a Garnet or a Copper, but I don't know that I'd want Gold, and not because I find reading boring, but because that's a lot of responsibility. So, what not boring color do you want?"

"The moment I could stand is when I shoulda started Standin'. I was made for it like every other brat here."

He studied her as her words confirmed what he'd suspected. She wasn't weyrbred. Wasn't anything wrong with that, but there was a certain air of uncertainty around those not used to weyrlife, still struggling to understand the rigid yet loose structure of a fighting Weyr. His life was as foreign to her as hers was to him.

"See a copper's a good goal, they're nice and handy and a garnet too if they don't make you sit on the sands like a gold. But you gotta think," he tapped his skull in emphasis, "of how much work you'd be signin' yourself on for. Big dragon means lotsa scrubbing. Twice a week at least you gotta scrub 'em. And then you have to oil them top to bottom so the hide don't crack."

He swung his legs, idly wiggling the stump of his right big toe. "Most candidates don't think about this stuff but I have; I've had lotsa time to think about what I want. I don't wanna spend half my life oiling a dragon that flies like a fat trundlebug. I wanna really fly. Gonna get me a blue or a green or one o' them shiny whatsits that have everyone's panties in a twist. That's where the real fun's at."

Kamene remembered not that many years ago being a kid and how insulting it was when someone thought you were younger than you were. Not that had lasted much past puberty, but still, she remembered. So, she did not express he doubt that he had been old enough to stand before now, besides, maybe weyrbrats, bred and raised in the weyr and familiar with its culture, were allowed to stand earlier than those searched into the weyr. "And how long was that injustice?" There was no mockery in her tone or expression. If he'd not been allowed to stand when he was old enough, that was an injustice, at least without good reason.

She chuckled at his reasoning that small was better than big because there was less work in caring for them. "But doesn't the bond make that less like work and more like time together with your dragon? That always seemed like a nice time of being alone together and well...bonding...to me. Though I suppose the reality might be different from the dream."

At his comparing any dragon to a trundlebug, Kamene's mouth dropped open for just a moment and then she giggled. "No one in the Halls, or any Holds I'd been to, would ever say anything like that!" At least not in public.

"Welllllllll," he drew out the word as long as possible, adding extra silly inflection to it, "I'm 'bout twelve turns now. I woulda been a tot when I started running around. In my expert opinion, I coulda had a small dragon then. I mean, why wait until later in life? What a waste! I want as much time as possible with my dragon. More than anyone else!"

"And I think you'll find that folks here don't watch their mouths as closely," he added as an afterthought. "Say what's on our minds unless we think a Wingleader or Master might tan our hide for it."

She seemed slightly scandalized, and that was utterly delightful to him. It must be so freeing to come from a stuffy hold to the Weyr where you could cuss the day away and no one would look sideways at you until you pissed off an important rider. And now she wouldn't be expected to do nothing but make a thousand babies and keep her mouth shut. Dragons really changed the status quo.

"I think you gotta point with all that about bonding and stuff. But less work means more flyin' and more flyin' means more fun. That's how I see it anyways. Won't complain if a big ol' bronze chooses me...tho I will question his judgment. Can you see me leading the Weyr?" Barrez spread his arms, diabolical grin stretching his face to its limit. He was every inch a filthy little weyrbrat and reveling in it.

She did not want to giggle. She really didn't, but Kamene could not help but do so at his declaration that he should have been allowed to stand almost immediately after, well, being able to stand! "But now that you're older and wiser and have thought through things, you have even more to offer a baby dragon." Kamene's smile was warm despite her giggles.

"Oh, you should hear weavers on dying duty, but dragons are usually held with so much respect, awe even...at least during a fall. There are records of it not being so during Intervals..." She remembered asking her mother about that and the answer not making much sense, at least not to her.

She did laugh, though it seemed with him more than anything else, as he spread his arms and asked if she could see him as a weyrleader. "Oh, I don't know, one day maybe, if you wanted to be and could accept all the work and time not flying."

"Well, yeah. You're right there. I have plenty to offer a dragon."

He dissolved into giggles then as the image of him as Weyrleader popped into his head. "Vaioa would fall apart if I got my hands on a bronze that wanted to boss everyone around. I don't really care about politics 'n stuff. I just want to fly. Have you ever seen a blue or a green go out just for the hell of it? I wanna do all that crazy stuff."

He mimed acrobatics with his hand, eyes shining with the thought of it. "They don't let kids like me do threadfall things until we're sixteen. And my dragon wouldn't rise until I was ready so I'll have so much time to just do whatever. And by the time I'm old enough, we'd be so great in the air that we'd blow the pants off everyone in threadfall. Everyone wins!"

But he was getting ahead of himself. Barrez focused on the other candidate, overflowing with curiosity. She seemed a nice enough sort. Not at all as stuffy as he'd expected out of a holdbred girl. "So you'ra weaver? Did you make that outfit you're wearin'? Y'kno dragonriders gotta make all their own straps and jackets and stuff. So you're like, ahead of the game there."

She watched him as he talked about flying and acrobats and just the pure joy of it, which was already obviously a part of him. "No, I haven't. Chores and what not have kept me busy in the little I've been here, and..." Kamene grinned. "I'll have to make a point to watch for that. It sounds like something I need to see."

Kamene had just met Bez, but she knew that Riding was a dangerous and difficult life. If he could have a few turns of enjoying his dragon before fighting Thread, that would be a very good thing! "I hope you impress this time around. Your energy and enthusiasm should be shared with a dragon!"

"I am, but this." She looked down at the work clothes she was wearing. Part of her did not want to admit to having made them herself. The weave was good, and the seams solid, but the clothing was rather boring. "Yeah, I made this, but really it's something any first turn journeyman could do. Besides, I prefer weaving to tailoring...though it's good to know that'll be a helpful skill here...though I've never worked with leather..."
