Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

No one looked twice at a child in the halls, even one rushing headlong and wearing the knots of candidacy. Barrez thanked Faranth for that now because he wanted everyone to assume that he was hurrying towards his next chore and not mischief. His sandaled footsteps echoed excitedly in the dim hallway, pounding out a beat not unlike the thudding of his heart.

When he burst into the dining hall, he took a moment to soak it all in. There were plenty of people around, but Barrez found sanctuary in crowds. He was too small to be noticed, too unimportant for anyone to care and that's the way he liked it. No one cared if he sauntered his way towards the hearth and leaned against it for its apparent warmth. Even the little queen lizard guarding her clutch in its improvised "sands" of loose rags didn't bat an eye at him. That was good.

He studied her out of the corner of his eye, admiring the sheen of her hide and the intelligence in her faceted eyes. She belonged to someone but in his time greedily watching the clutch, Barrez hadn't so much as caught a glimpse of who that might be. But if she were wild, she'd have had a small flock of lesser lizards tending to her every need. At least a couple of bronze mates around to keep her fed. He wondered if he'd have to worry about her owner as his gaze slid over the eggs. There was one noticeably larger than the rest. That was his target.

All he had to do was wait for Haely.

It didn't take long to gather the required supplies, especially when Feran blinked from Between to help her hoard a few scraps of meat as the girl herself went for the oil. She knew well enough where to find it, having been locked in the storage closet not too long ago, and quickly found the right shelf before darting out before the door could be closed and locked on her again. Her fingers twitched the entire time, and she considered herself lucky not to have dropped the bottle.

"O-Okay, Feran. Take the meat to the secret spot. You know the one. Me an' Barrez'll meet you with the babies. Okay?" She murmured in quick, hushed tones, glancing around and trying to place the adults in the dining hall. The gold let out a long-suffering sigh and took off with her snatched meal, jaws salivating slightly at the rich aroma of fresh scraps.

Haely tucked the bottle of oil into the pocket of her breeches, having to stuff it in there a bit awkwardly as she hastily covered it with her tunic to try and hide the filched material. Once she was sure it was more or less secure, she headed back out into the Dining Hall at a run. Barrez should've been there by now; all that was needed was to start her distraction. With expert timing, she 'tripped' and fell to the floor, skidding a good couple of feet and bumping lightly into the leg of a table currently occupied by a number of hungry Weyrfolk.

Soon after, Haely popped her arm out of place, letting the limb go limp. The Weyrfolk had noticed her, were beginning to look down to see what had interrupted their meal--and she wailed. Crocodile tears spilled from her eyes like desert rain as she rolled around on the ground and sobbed pitiful, heart-wrenching sobs. Her mouth opened wide, revealing the spaces where her baby teeth had once been.

It wasn't long before the table of Weyrfolk were standing, and others began to rush over upon seeing the girl's arm in such an odd position. Some cooed to her and attempted to calm her while others debated calling for a healer--but she would not be soothed. Instead, she kept crying loudly, only raising her volume when a well-meaning adult attempted to coddle her. She only hoped that it was a suitable distraction for Barrez's long-overdue hostile takeover of the 'lizard eggs.

Haely's performance was so convincing that Barrez found himself lurching toward the crying instinctively, whether to get a better look or to actually help the girl. But the warmth of the hearth at his back reminded him of his mission. The gold had taken flight in surprise toward the source of the commotion and he'd never have a better chance.

He leaned over the nest and snatched up the largest egg and then started to turn away...but it was still calling to him. Haely ought not to come away from this situation without part of the spoils for herself. So he tucked the second largest egg into his pouch as well and, cradling his precious cargo close to his chest, fled the dining hall to where he expected to meet the other candidate.

Haely's anguished wailing echoed behind him for ages until he finally slammed a door behind him and sank to the ground outside. The sky rumbled distantly, a promise of thunderstorms to come in the night as the sun sank further along the horizon.

Barrez didn't care. He looked down at his stolen eggs and felt better than he ever had in his entire life. They'd actually pulled it off.

After several long minutes had passed, Haely found herself fairly certain that Barrez had made his escape. Sparing a glance at the brooding firelizard mother in the hearth and noting that she seemed at least mildly discomfited by all the chaos and confusion, she slowly stopped her crying. Her throat was sore, but she was overall none the worse for wear. Adults smiled at her, calling her a 'brave girl' when she finally settled down. One particularly kind man helped her to her feet, and she wiped her eyes with her sleeve.

"Let's get you to see the Healers, child," he added, giving her a warm smile as he gestured toward the door. "We'll make sure you're all better in the blink of a dragon's eye."

"N-No thanks," she replied, sniffling as she snapped her arm promptly back into place with an overdramatic show that left the crowd gasping. "H-Happens all the time."

So shocked were they that none pursued her when she took off running, her impish grin returning to her lips as she darted out of the dining hall. The rumble of thunder tickled her ear, and she made mental contact with Feran as she ran outside to try and find Barrez once more. She wanted to know if he'd gotten his egg--and, even better, she wanted to see his face when his New Best Friend hatched!

"Barrez? You out here, buddy?" She called, cautiously looking around before noticing him sitting on the ground with not one, but two eggs in his hands. Her face twisted a bit at this; two was getting a little greedy, she thought, but she supposed she couldn't judge him for really wanting a good little friend like her Feran.

"Feran's got the meat, an' I got the oil right here in my pocket!"

As she said the words, Feran blinked to her, holding a small bunch of scraps in her jaws and foreclaws--though one of the scraps was halfway down her own gullet by this point.

"Feran! That's not for you!"

The gold swallowed the remnant of her meal, peeped an innocent little 'who me?' sound, and then obediently perched on her shoulder as she eyed the eggs with curiosity.

"Ah! Haely! You really are the best!" Bez thrust the smaller of the two eggs at his accomplice in crime with the biggest smile he'd ever managed. There was life in these eggs, he could feel it stirring under his fingers. "I thought you were really hurt for a minute. If I didn't know better I woulda swore you busted your arm up good. This is for you because you helped."

The tiniest of wiggles in his hand sent a bolt of excitement straight to his gut. It fluttered there like an anxious flitt. "We timed it perfectly. In a minute they'll be hatching and no one in there will give a bent tailfork if a few are missing or if you pulled the wool over their eyes. We are geniuses."

Another wiggle. Barrez's heart jumped. He reached for a handful of meat without fear of Feran snapping at him and bent over his egg. It was the center of his universe now, the shining moment he'd been waiting for his entire bloody life. He'd stolen it and that made the reward all the sweeter, because in a few moments no one would be able to take it away from him no matter how they tried. Jays, an egg was the least of what he could give to his new friend!

"Oh! Oh I just feed it right? I don't gotta do anything special?"

It was a stupid question. If he could Impress a dragon like the Searching blue had said he could, then he could Impress a simple fire lizard. They weren't as picky. Didn't need a mystical...whatever to draw them to a person. Just a full stomach and a gentle touch. He could do that.

Fire lizards shot past them, little streaks of color a blur in his peripheral vision heading towards the hearth with tidbits of food from all over the Weyr. People might be the primary Impressers these days, but that didn't quell the instinct most fire lizards had to feed newborns. It was the reason he hunched so protectively over his egg; as helpful as she'd been thus far, he didn't want Feran stealing the spotlight.

The top of his egg flaked off, revealing a pulsating membrane that was quickly pierced by an ivory colored egg tooth. A molten orange nose soon followed, glittering with the telltale metallic gleam that set Feran's belly ablaze in the right light. As his heart climbed into his throat, Barrez found himself unconsciously murmuring encouragements to the little gold. He'd been expecting a bronze or a large, sturdy brown, but in his greediness he really had taken the best of the bunch.

She was beautiful. More beautiful, he thought rather traitorously, than Haely's lizard. Like molten lava formed into the shape of a lizard with a glowing underbelly and neon orange wings, she was living fire, and she was hungry. The queen wasted little time in attacking the meat he had offered her, taking it directly from his fingers as his tender reassurances washed over her. Barrez felt the slightest tingle at the back of his mind, a buzz and then a gentle presence that dug out a little space of its own and set up permanent residence at the same moment as she finally blinked up at him and cheeped softly.

He was hers.

She grinned when he called her 'the best' again. She could get used to that. Haelyea, a.k.a. "The Best," Candidate at Vaioa Weyr! It had a nice ring to it; maybe others would start to use it, as well, now that she seemed to have won Barrez over. When he offered her the second egg, however, her eyes went wide. He was... he was giving her an egg? He stole one for her? That was... the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her.

Her eyes welled up a bit as she took the egg from him, a quiet smile stuck on her lips as she felt the egg moving between her fingers. Touched as she was by the gesture, Feran was absolutely incensed.. This was her girl! She cheeped and shrieked, dropping some of the meat in the process, as she flapped her wings and flicked her tail with annoyance. The egg was stirring, and she found herself humming without wanting to as instinct took over.

"Nope," Haely said quietly in response to her friend's question. "Just gotta feed it. And love on it. It'll bond to ya right nice."

She continued watching the egg as Feran's hum deepened, glancing up just in time to see the gold burst forth from her friend's egg--and what a lovely little creature she was! She beamed a grin at the sight, excited to have a friend who also had a little queen lizard running around with him. When her egg rocked again, however, she returned her attention to the matter at hand.

A leg was the first thing to break out of the membrane once the shell had cracked. Another followed it, and then a large eyeball peered out through one of the holes it had made. Slowly, the nose poked its way out, followed by the rest of it as the lizard slid lazily through the opening. Once done, it kicked the eggshell out of Haely's hand, stretched lazily as it spread its wings wide, and then looked at her inquisitively with an odd smile on its lips.

It was... a bronze? She thought it was a bronze, but the creature's hide was dusted with steely greyish blue tones and bright golden specks, a dark mask and 'collar' around his neck, and a paler underside that shone almost cream. He was a pale thing, but the metallic sheen was unmistakable.

"Oh," she murmured, grabbing a scrap of meat from Feran and offering it to the lizard as his mind pressed into hers. "Hullo."

Feran snorted, flicked her tail, and let out a grumpy little hiss at the creature before blinking Between in a huff. Scraps of meat showered the ground where she had been, and Haely laughed with a bit of a grimace as she scooped more of the meat up to feed to the lizard. As she fed him, she looked over at Barrez with a lopsided grin.

"Well. I'd say you took some pretty shardin' good eggs," she proclaimed, actually cursing as she shifted to slowly sit down on the sand.

Barrez hadn't really known what to expect when it came to bonding to a fire lizard. He'd thought maybe it was a bit like having a small winged dog that understood what you said to it, but he hadn't really thought he'd feel his fire lizard in the back of his mind like a tiny version of a dragon. She didn't talk, but there was a bright spark of awareness there that belonged right where it was. Impressing a dragon was said to be many times as spectacular as this; he shivered at the thought. How could anything be as wonderful as this moment?

Well-stuffed, the little gold stretched out on his hand and allowed herself to be stroked, her feet dangling through the gaps between his fingers and her tail curled around his wrist. Each soft breath she took pressed gently against his hand. It was a dizzying sensation. Bez wore an incredulous smile when he finally turned to Haely. He was pleased to see that she'd attached a bronze, fitting that she got the next best egg in the clutch for all her help. Feran was conspicuously absent. When had that happened?

"They're amazing! Now we'll match! Well..sorta. I don't think I need two tho. Not really."

He stared adoringly down at his gold again, scarcely believing that she was really his. Everyone in the barracks was going to be so jealous. "Now I just gotta...what? Feed her when she's hungry and oil her? I can do that no problem. How fast do they grow? Can she read my thoughts like a dragon? What are you going to name your bronze?"

What was he going to name her?

Haely giggled at her friend's announcement that they would--more or less--match now that they had a pair of golds between them. She looked down curiously at her new bronze, watching the lazy way his tail waved off the sides of her palms as he seemed to smirk at the strange new world he'd found himself part of. His little spark of consciousness nestled itself right beside the space that Feran occupied; it was a strange feeling, being connected to three things at once. It was going to take some getting used to, that was for sure.

"I really didn't need two, I guess," she admitted, stroking her bronze as the little thing stretched languidly and flared his wings. "Not gonna complain, though. He's cute."

All of a sudden, her new human friend pelted her with questions, and she laughed as she shifted her attention to Barrez rather than her new bronze.

"Yeah, you just gotta feed her an' keep her oiled. I oil mine every day or every other day, dependin' on how her hide looks an' what she tells me. Trust me, they'll let you know if they're uncomfortable. Nothin' like a creeling flitter ta get you up an' moving! They grow pretty quick. Yours'll be pretty much full grown in a little more'n a Turn, if I remember right. An' she can read your thoughts an' all, but it takes a lot of practice ta get it right. She an' I were lookin' at each other like we were both stupid for the first few months!"

She grinned at the memory, then blinked when he asked what she was going to name her new companion.

"Oh. Um... Gee," she wondered, furrowing her brow at the little creature. He looked back at her, still apparently grinning as his eyes whirled with amusement and mischief. She could feel the intelligence behind that gaze, just as surely as she could feel Feran's annoyance radiating from whatever hidey-hole she had tucked herself into.

"I think... I think I'll name him... Puck. Puck sounds like a good name for him. What about you? Whatcha gonna name your pretty lady?"

"Puck. I like that. It's got spunk to it. You think Feran will mother him when she gets back from...wherever she is?"

Barrez caressed the back of his gold with a finger tip and was rewarded with a soft, babyish croon. He didn't quite squeal with delight, but he squeaked quietly, so overwhelmed that if Haely hadn't been right next to him, he might have burst into tears. Jays, he was going to be a right mess when he got a dragon. But no one would judge him for crying at Impression then. Fire lizards were an entirely different matter.

"I dunno what to name her. Um...let's see. She looks like she was made of fire. So Fire?" He frowned. "No that's stupid. It doesn't sound girly at all an' golds are the girliest girls, right? How bout I stick an A on that and call her Fira. Does that sound like a girl name to you?"

Realistically, he probably could have named her Dirt and she would have accepted it. But such a grand little creature deserved an equally grand name. Something fitting to her stunning coloration and personality. He wanted it to be just right. "I sorta like the sound of that. Fira."
