Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Barrez felt that, honestly, the work of a candidate wasn't nearly as bad as the older candidates made it out to be. With all the whining he'd overheard before, he'd thought it would be hellish, but his short experience had taught him that it was mostly simple cleaning and lectures. The hardest of the work was in the infirmary and that was only if the sight of blood made you sick. The smell of numbweed was the worst of it for him.

Oddly enough it was the youngest candidates, him and the other just-eligible boys and girls who complained the least. Funny that they preferred the ones that were close to aging out to boys like him, Bez thought, he was far more eager and tireless than the young adults who whined ceaselessly about their chapped hands and sunburns.

So he was smiling when he flopped down across from the girl with the gold fire lizard, rather than complaining dramatically like the rest of the returning candidates. But his eyes had a hard glint of jealousy that he couldn't quite conceal as he looked at the familiar girl. She was his age. How in the world did she have a grown fire lizard? A gold? Why was she allowed one when he'd been told no? He could take care of a fire lizard better than anyone if someone would just give him a bloody chance!

He wanted kick something, but instead he just asked, "Is she going to clutch soon? Do 'ya think I could have an egg?"

If she was willing to part with one, it would make the mischief he'd been plotting for the last few days unneeded. There was a pot of eggs incubating on the hearth in the dining hall, but why steal one when he could just ask a fellow candidate?

Haely had been reading when she was suddenly intruded upon by the red-headed boy she'd seen around the Weyr. She blinked at his flop, blinked again at his words, and then looked at Feran inquisitively when the gold peeped a solid negative at the boy before turning her back to him with a lazy stretch.

"Uh... I didn't even think she could lay eggs. I've had her almost two Turns, an' she's never once done anythin' egg-like," she began, more or less unfazed by the interruption. She squinted at Feran, only to laugh when the gold swatted her nose with her dark tail. "Hey! I was just lookin'. You gonna lay eggs?"

A sharp peep of dismissal was all the gold deigned to give, eyes whirling with annoyance as she looked at the boy. He had 'troublemaker' written all over him. Even if she did have eggs, she would certainly think twice before entrusting one of them to his care. Haely caught the train of half-formed thoughts and giggled before looking at the boy once more.

"I don't think she's gonna anytime soon. I keep her busy. Why? You want a flitter? There's lots, you know. I've found nests halfway up the cliff walls! Greens lay eggs and just leave 'em there, flighty things. I dunno what happens to their babies. I don't think they know, either. Feran, here, came from an egg my mama bought me. She thought it'd be a guard bronze or maybe a good brown, but nope! Out came Feran. She's a good stand-in when mom's too busy."

It was a never-ending stream of chatter, one thought bleeding rapidly into the next as she set her reading material down on the table. Nothing was filtered, and nothing seemed able to interrupt the babble save for her own next thought. New people made her nervous; she couldn't help the lack of filter.

Barrez stared back at the little gold, a challenge dancing in his green eyes. But when he heard that she was barren he slumped visibly, blowing a soft raspberry of defeat. So he'd have to go to the hearth after all. That would be tricky to manage without a good distraction; there was always someone watching.

"You're lucky that your mom cares enough to give you an egg. My folks're too busy. And the crecheworkers said I couldn't have one because I'm too young and kids can't take care of fire lizards. But you've got a shardin' gold so they're talking out their asses, aren't they?"

He'd seen plenty of greens nesting in the rocky walls of the Weyr all his life. But..."I've looked for green nests. All the eggs go rotten or cook in the sun cuzz they don't care for 'em. Or the tunnelsnakes and wherries get 'em. When I ask for a proper gold clutch egg people look at me like I got boobs on my forehead."

He sighed wistfully, admiring the little gold despite the less-than-friendly colors in her eyes. "No one ever tried to take her 'way from you?"

Haely raised her brows as she listened to the boy, head tilting curiously as she examined him with her mismatched eyes. He couldn't have a firelizard? Nobody would let him? That was awful! To be fair, she hadn't asked for hers; her mother was simply over-indulgent with her only offspring, and had got her the egg on a whim to teach her responsibility and to have something to keep an eye on her as she went throughout her day. Faranth knew she'd needed it. But still...

"I mean, it's not super easy ta take care of her, but she's also really smart an' kinda makes sure I know what she needs. It's not like it's... it's healercraft or something," she proclaimed, furrowing her brow again as she thought of all the people telling the boy no. "They're pretty good at takin' care of themselves."

When he asked if anyone had tried to take Feran away, however, she burst into laughter. The sudden motion and noise upset her lizard, who creeled unhappily before finally hopping down to curl up on the table--which was considerably less likely to explode into movement at any given moment.

"They tried a couple times, cuz she was 'too distracting' in lessons--but they sure got an earful from it! One of the Harpers still has scars, I bet. Went and grabbed her like a dimglow. They forget she's a queen, even if she is just little."

The gold cheeped at this, dipping her little head in a regal nod of approval before shifting to daintily clean her forepaws with her long, slender tongue.

Ugghhhhhhhhhh. So. Unfair. Barrez clenched his hands into fists briefly before letting the anger go with a quiet sigh. Wasn't this girl's fault her mom had spoiled her. He should be happy because here was proof that even a little girl could handle something like a gold fire lizard and adults were just stupid and keeping all the good shaffit for themselves.

"Not mature enough my ass," he muttered. "You know what? I'm going to do it. I'm gonna take one." He looked back up at Haely and grinned, lopsided and gap-toothed. "Only the candidate master or a dragonrider can tell me what to do now and they won't care, right? I mean this place is swarmin' with flitts. What's one more? No one will miss an egg or two."

He nodded to himself decisively. The sight of the gold on her shoulders, so beautiful and regal and such a perfect miniture of an actual dragon had made up his mind. He wouldn't just take an egg, but he'd take the biggest and best of them. His fire lizard could watch his back for him while he was taking a break from chores, it could help him attract a dragon, it could keep him company when the rest of the Weyr had gone to sleep.

"I'm gonna take one of those eggs on the hearth," he confided to the girl. "When no one is lookin' I'm just gonna take one. They'll hatch soon, I think. And once it's hatched they can't take it away, right?"

Haely was still all smiles and grins before he said the thing. The thing that could get him into--well... could it get him into trouble? She furrowed her brow as he kept talking, lips pursing to one side as she worried the lower one. It was true, there were flitters everywhere. Lots of people had taken to trying to attract owners when their lizards decided to take off and make babies, as a matter of fact. So what would it matter if he just walked up and grabbed one?

He'd been told no so many times--and it wasn't fair! Everybody should have a pet if they wanted one, she thought, and a firelizard was the perfect companion when one was waiting so very patiently for their very own dragon. Even more so when one had to cope with no human friends wanting to talk or play or even just exist in the same space as she did...

Suddenly, her face twisted in determination. Her jaw set firmly in an imitation of her mother's strong scowl, she sat upright and bonked a fist on the table.

"Yes. You should do it, and I'm gonna help. They can't take it away if it loves you--they're so quick, even when they hatch, I don't think they could even if they tried," she said, running a hand over Feran. The gold, however, was not so keen on the idea. She let out a sharp hiss of disapproval--stealing eggs? How crass!--before snorting when Haely pouted at her.

"C'moooon, Feran. He needs a friend! A little buddy, just like you an' me! Everybody oughta have a friend, now, shouldn't they? And I bet one of them li'l babies would like him just as well."

Feran observed her person for several long moments before letting out the oddest sort of mewling, growling groan as she stood and flapped lazily to the rafters. She might not be stopping them, but she'd have no part in this mess.

"Well... I guess we can't count on her, but I'm in!"

Did that gold really understand what all was being said to her? Bez had always thought of fire lizards as being just slightly more clever than your average dog. But this one clearly comprehended an entire conversation and had a sense of right and wrong; her own sense of morality sent her fluttering to the rafters but Bez was all toothy grin and sparkling green eyes because he had an accomplice now. Now there was no way he'd be caught and punished!

"Let her sulk," he cackled, "We don't need her help. All I need is a good distraction."

He thought of the dining hall and winced a bit as he stood. This time of day it would be pretty crowded. But maybe that could work to their advantage. "Do you know how we can get everyone lookin' in one direction so I can swoop in and take an egg or two? Maybe you could get up on a table and dance around. That oughta do it."

Or it might get her sent to the infirmary to get her head checked for crazy.

"Name's Barrez, by the way," he added, realizing he hadn't properly introduced himself. It wouldn't hurt to be polite to the girl helping him realize one of his lifelong dreams. "We gotta get some meat from the kitchens too. And some oil. They need to be oiled like dragons, yeah?"

Haely considered the boy's proposition for a few minutes, nose crinkling at the thought of 'dancing around' to try and get everybody's attention. The thought of people staring at her because she was dancing like a lunatic wasn't very pleasant. Surely there was an alterna--oh. Oh, yes. She turned back to the boy, grinning deviously.

"I ain't a dancer, but I can do this," she said, using one arm to faux-dislocate the other; the limb twisted awkwardly, looking seriously injured but being no more painful than an exceedingly long stretch thanks to her bizarre joints. "Betcha if I wiggled it around and cried, I could get lots of attention. I'm still little an' cute, after all."

She flapped the awkwardly-positioned limb in front of him with an impish giggle, then paused to think about the logistics of meat and oil. She knew both of those things were easy enough to get to in the kitchens, but with one body busy grabbing eggs and the other busy distracting people with crocodile tears, there was none left for going and getting the necessities.

"Hmm... I'll get the meat an' oil first. I'll put 'em..." she thought for a minute, looking around. "Oh! I know the perfect spot. I may be able to convince Feran ta take 'em, since it'll help the babies."

It was a good plan, and she was proud of them. That decided, she promptly extended her floppy arm to him to shake with a broad, sly grin.

"Haelyea. Everybody calls me Haely, though. Or... well, a bunch of not-so-nice things. Haely's fine. Nice ta meetcha proper, Barrez."

Barrez's wild cackling echoed through the barracks, harsh and delighted. Had he been anyone else he might have been horrified at what was a very convincing imitation of a broken arm, but all he saw was perfection. This was going to work. He shook her floppy hand with gusto.

"You're the best," he said, and it was true at that moment. "Will 'ya show me how to train my lizard to do things? I heard that if you don't raise 'em right, they go wild and don't come back. Mine's gotta be my best friend at least till my dragon gets here."

The weyrbrat spared a glance for the open doorway of the barracks, noting the fading light. If they wanted to make an attempt at this, it had to happen tonight. Those eggs were rumored to crack soon. He didn't want to take his chances with the crowd, desperately waving a slice of meat around in hopes of attracting maybe a flighty green that was more likely to go wild than anything; he wanted the best of the bunch.

"Let's get going then before it's too late! Why don't you get the supplies and I meet 'ya in the dining hall?"

She grinned brightly as the boy shook her hand, flushing slightly when he proclaimed her to be 'the best.' No one had ever called her 'the best' before! When he continued with his follow-up question, she almost missed it as she radiated with excitement.

"Huh? Oh! Yeah, sure! I taught Feran a few things, but she taught me a lot, too. If you get one of the bigger ones, they're smarter and it's easier," she explained, happily babbling on as she shared her knowledge. "I'm working on gettin' Feran ta send notes, but... well, I don't really have anyone ta send notes to. Hey! Maybe we can send notes back and forth to each other when you've got your own lizard! And--and maybe little things, too, like glass beads or something! Wouldn't that be cool? Little lizard ferrying service? I think it would be cool."

Her rambling was cut short, however, when he mentioned the urgency of their task. She gave a sharp nod when he asked her to get the supplies, and gave a floppy-armed salute before dissolving into giggles at the ridiculousness of the action.

"Sure thing! I'll grab the stuff, stow it away, and go make my distraction in th' dinin' hall. You'll know when it's time to grab the eggs," she insinuated, wiggling her bushy eyebrows. "This is gonna be fun. Oh! Good luck, too, 'fore I forget!"

That said, she took off running, popping her arm back into place as she went. Her smile never once left her face as her feet padded across the 'bowl to get to the Lower Caverns; Feran's reproachful look followed her the entire length of the barracks, and she swore she felt the lizard's eyes on her even when she had gotten out onto the sands proper.
